Sid The Kid will never be the same - Carree may be over

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is participating in light exercise but remains sidelined indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby hasn’t played since Dec. 5 and hasn’t practiced in three weeks after getting jostled in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. Coach Dan Bylsma said Wednesday that Crosby is dealing with lingering symptoms and isn’t sure when he’ll return.

He needs to retire. He's at the point where he receives mini-concussions at the slightest of contact. Better to leave the game now and have a chance at a long and healthy life than end up like guys like Probert who pass away far too young. Hope he makes the right decision here before it's too late.

Malkin is the man. The Machine. Pens have done a good job building this team in that an injury to a super star of Crosby's caliber has not crippled them.

10 years ago he would have been called soft. There is a lot more medical awareness these days. Although his Sport Chek commercials are really gay. Lol.

He's gotta go one way or the other. Either lace them up night in night out or retire. He's an awesome hockey player but to be a legend you don't sit out for full seasons.

I agree. I think this is a surprise to everyone (when he first suffered the hit a year ago) and... no one really knows what to do? Hoping for a miracle that he just snaps out of it... it's not going to happen. I think his career is over. What a way to leave the game.

yeah, all of hockey is feeling the impact of this. Notice hockey is never even on sports center anymore unless it's a concussion update. Hockey has survived because of the "Lemieux Era", which was quickly transitioning into the "Crosby era".

Malkin has done a great job of stepping up and taking over as lead but he won't be the one to save the game and bring new interest. Maybe we need to get NHL players some football helmets.

Sid will lead the league in points next year...and probably during this years playoffs. He will be back, Pens are just being extra cautious on their 100m+ investment. which is smart.

The bullet-proof equipment is partially to blame. When I played elbow pads were soft and shoulder pads had 1 plastic flap on each shoulder. They are almost the same as football equip lately. Of course I wouldn't like to block a shot with that old stuff either.

this is a complete crock of steaming bullshit.

playoff ratings on TV were very good last year, game 7 in the finals was the highest rated game 7 ever (14% higher than the game 7 sid participated in in 2009), and gate attendance also rose overall last season. What those numbers actually show is that the game does not need him at all to thrive.

Players' size & speed have increased. Increase playing area. Go to olymic-sized rinks. And automatic icing too.

Teams and arenas lose millions over time making the playing surface larger. To do do you lose all front row seating which is the highest priced ticket.

Everyone is saying visors need to be worn and padding bigger and all that bullshit. How many concussions/serious head injuries did guys have before helmets? A lot fukken less. Why? Because you learned to keep your head up at a very young age. You put your head down you're going to get hurt. It happens to everyone once and either they learn not to do it again or they won't be around much longer.

Same with football and the old school leather helmets. Guys ran with their heads up, tacklers tackled with their shoulders without diving in head first. If anyone watches rugby the only head to head collisions are mostly accidental in a ruck when there are bodies everywhere.

Too much equipment is leading to a feeling of invincibility. If all players are forces to wear full visors you will see even more carelessness.

A way to imagine this is anyone who gets dressed up for halloween. If you wear a mask or face paint you'll have much less inhibition. Why? Because you feel like your true identity is hidden so you can be more outgoing. Soldiers wear face paint because it is proven that it is much easier to kill wearing face paint than not. Same with football players covering their cheeks in black paint.

Yep. That's why I laugh when the powers that be talk about player safety. I'm sure there's a lot of revenue lost when signature players are out for long stretches too, but nothing like arena renovations I agree.

You're correct pal. Hamburgers I play in the beer league with wear cages, I had a visor an was nearly blinded by an ankle bender being careless. He was careless because he felt invincible with a cage on and had no regard for my fukkin chicklets or eyeballs, going into the corner with me with his fukkin stick above his head like a prick.

Needless to say I wear a cage now.

So wrong... He still has symptoms right now. His start for next year is in question, and even if he does start, how long will he last?

    Either that, or....

Players were much smaller so the physics of a 250 man versus a 145 pound man came into play.

Equipment like shoulder pads were made of banded cloth and not some bizarre plastic/metal military grade composite.

Or my personal choice...they were tons of concussions, but they weren't treated as serious injuries and the players faded into history with the benefit of the internet to follow them into their senior years.

Someone needs to start a concussion syndrome league.... Get guys like crosby and lindros...... No hitting.... It will be like a skills league 4 on 4 fast paced with Mario and Gretzky like plays. You'd get a lot of foreign players after awhile. Hell during intermissions you could hire old goons like George's laroque to fight stu grimson

I agree with everything you say but players are not 250 pounds nowadays. The average is around 200 pounds and in the 70s/80s maybe 160/170. The heaviest player in the league is probably Chara (255 pounds) and how many concussions does he cause (minus the Hab he pushed into the start of the glass partition).

Players are becoming more careless since they feel overly protected with their 'military grade' composite.

There is no way that in the past there were 'tons of concussions.' You didn't see players bounce their heads off the ice. You didn't see players skating with their heads down in the middle of the ice. If you gave someone a head shot (either purposely or accident) you were going to get the shit beat of you.

If you ever watched Gretzky play you would understand how and why he was not hit.
