The other thing is not being on ESPN is Huge.You need the ESPN Propaganda Machine to promote your sport and Hockey is almost non exsistent on that network.In fact when i was at the gym yesterday they did not even cut into a taped sportscenter to show the press conference of Atlanta moving to Winnipeg.If it was any of the other big 3 sports had a team move it would been covered big time.

I am not American but don't especially enjoy watching ice hockey.

Two main reasons for me:

1) Even in these days of big screens and HD, tracking the puck isn't easy.
2) Most of the goals are a result of shots which are deflected off sticks, skates or arms.

As a bettor, I like the sport. Lots of shots and the scoring has (more or less) a Poisson probability distribution.

i am confused about the popularity in the states for hockey. Bobby Orr, who played for boston in the mid 70's and had a short career, was nominated as the most popular athlete in boston history.. even more than brady, pierce, bird, manny, ted williams, etc.. attendance is much higher in nhl than nba in U.S. also, the previous record for most people out in 1 spot in america is not some rally, or concert.. it was back in 1975 for a flyers parade with 1.5 million.. which was shattered last june when chicago had 2 milliion + people out for their parade, and it was a working day to boot. both records are for hockey...now how come the record is not for any super bowl, world series, or nba parade? this is why i'm confused. with 2 million for hockey out there, you'd think hockey must be big..

and don't say they were only out to party and get drunk because in montreal, when we last won the cup, we had over 1 million in our parade, and when our CFL team won this year, we only had a few thousand out for the parade.

Exceptions: Chicago, NewYork, Detroit, Boston because these are the 4 US original NHL franchises. The rest of New England and the northern plains states because kids grow up playing the game. Rest of the country not so much. They don't hate the game. They just don't care.

blitter, i just read wikipedia and philly held the record in U.S. soil with 2 million in 1974 for the flyers parade.. which was tied or beaten by chicago last year. i swear i didn't even know they had 2 million in philly. i think 98% of that whole city back in 74 were there.. if not everyone.. how come no chicago parades with jordan in the 90's or even bears in 85, or any lakers came even close to hockey parades???

something doesn't add up. i know hockey is not big in U.S, but why no other championship parades come even close..

I was at the parade in Anaheim in 07'. A firetruck drove in front of me with Teemu Selanne. He's a handsome man with those shades on.

Like i said earlier Hockey being played in June is Just ridiculous it has been in the 90s on east coast all week and for most of the country Hockey is a winter sport and should be over by at least May.Baseball is the same i watch the season in shifts i love Opening Day and then thats it till Memorial Day and so on.This year i think Hockey is taking a backseat to the nba championship because you have almost like a pro wrestling feel to it you have Lebron James the long time good guy in Cleveland who did a heel turn and left for south beach and now is hated around the country so Dallas as taking on the Good guy role and has the whole country cheering for them just to see the Heat lose so the NBA has a good story line to it where as u have a Canadian based team in the nhl finals and 2 teams most people here dont care about.

I went to Raleigh to watch a Maple Leaf game and there were more leaf fans in the place than Carolina fans..... American's don't give a shit because half the country wouldn't know why ice is if they didn't use it in their drink. There are very few "American" star hockey players. Boston has more Canadians on their team than Vancouver. This crap about they can't follow a black puck on white is incredible. Yet people will watch golf with a white ball hit into the white cloudy sky and follow it perfectly.

If the Americans were actually good at the game, they would be all over it, but sadly it's a sport they can't play.

tonight's game is the big test. yes, last game was on versus and it was a weeknight and some baseball games were on.. tonight, it's on NBC.. it's sat night. no work tomorrow, it's the weekend.. no NBA game on tonight.. and no baseball games at all tonight.. and nothing at all on tv tonight.. just COPS and other stupid shows...just hockey and on NBC.. i swear, if there ain't at least 18 million tonight watching this game in U.S, i give up.. tonight is hockey's big chance to redeem itself in the U.S.

game 7.. TB vs BOS.. nothing else on tv.. close to 4 million canadians watch that game.. ONLY 2.5 million americans watched it.. and there are a total of 30 million in canada, and over 300 million in U.S. to boot. and i bet 2 million of the 2.5 million were from boston and TB area. that means only 500k people in all of america watched game 7 of the conf final.. and that includes detroit, minnesota, chicago, philly, etc...where hockey is popular..so bottom line, no one in america watched this game 7.

i dont get it. why?? why do americans not like hockey? hockey is an exciting sport.. i know black people hate hockey, but how come no whites are watching either.. it's playoffs.. and hockey has tons of hitting, lots of fighting and fast non stop action.. just what americans love in sports. is it because it's a canadian sport and not an american sport?

my whole life since being a kid, i dreamt of one day hockey would become so big in the states, but i am starting to give up on this. no matter how we improve the game, more goals, more power plays, more fighting, it's just not going to happen. bottom line, americans will never accept hockey.. i just don't know why..

i love hockey but...

1) it doesn't translate well to TV like football and bball. it is a little hard to follow the puck

2) people don't understand the sport

i wish hockey was more popular, but in the end, who really cares how popular it is? do i wish it got more coverage, sure. but how many other people are watching the same game as me doesn't affect my enjoyment of that game

wow, we think alike,. i swear to god i did the same thing. i put on nbc to help ratings, but you know what, i couldn't take more than 2 min of nbc. man did nbc suck. first, the HD image was shitty. the ice was too bright and not clear and announcer was not that good. i had to go back to CBC because picture was crisp and perfect, smooth and jim hughson is way better. plus nbc was 8 seconds behind cbc. what a diff between cbc and nbc. nbc sucks big time.


i swear, if nhl ratings on nbc doesn't break a record, i will be pissed. i'ts on nbc, not versus...no nba, no mlb, no big shows like idol, glee, etc.. nothing else on tv... it's sat night and no work the next day and it's the cup finals..i better see good #'s for this one, or i throw in the towel. this was hockey's biggest chance to shine in the spotlight in the usa.
