Is RLM a thing of the Past?

Just wondering what people think about Reverse Line Movement nowadays....do you think the books have caught on and RLM is basically a coin flip?

I know there was an article written by LT Profits a few years back about RLM, and that it is profitable, but just wondering what others think on whether the books have basically accounted for this now...

Look forward to replies..thanks as always

As information -> common knowledge, value -> zero. A little calculus...

RLM is popular because it's simple. An oversimplification of the complex factors surrounding the betting market. Just look through the NBA forum for the percentage of threads quoting public betting percentages = sure things and it speaks volumes. That being said, sometimes the situation is exactly what it appears to be, but imbalanced betting is a daily occurrence and should never be a primary reason for betting a game. Any time you're using one filter to make decisions, it's going to fail.

The books have "caught on" doesn't make sense. RLM in essence is the book "catching on" because they need to adjust the line because too much big money is coming in on one side (and in the RLM scenario it is from few bets placed for large amounts). Placing multiple filters on a suspected RLM line is necessary in order to gain an edge. You must check changes in player status (from injury announcements to personal reasons) may effect a line and not betting action. There is also often opportunities to do profitable line shopping in RLM situations.

I would basically say RLM just would make you look twice at a game. Try to figure out if there is a REASON the line is moving the way it is.

Overall, I think there is more value to be found by handicapping games and betting openers. However, if there is RLM on a game then it is definately worth looking deeper into the reasons why and then re-evaluating whether or not your original lean is still valid.

There are no easy answers when it comes to sports betting. Whether it's RLM or anything else, simple solutions are easy wrong anwsers.

RLM has some value at times, but it's just another piece of the puzzle. As hitting coaches say in baseball, every time you think you found the key to hitting - they change the locks.
