Sportsbook delay in hanging monelines in nfl

Why does a sportsbook wait to put up money lines but have spread posted much sooner.

    Tks

my guess is they were getting creamed on early moneylines... usually books stop doing what they are getting killed on

look at betonline, they take huge bets but don't even have game props on ncaaf or nfl any more, even though they were 500 limits

Don't moneylines usually get posted same time as totals? if so, that would explain it, MLs are dependent on spread/total combo.

I'm unaware that totals are a factor. I thought spread to ml conversions were standard formula. Tks

No, ML for -7 with total of 50 is different than ML for -7 with total of 38.

No because different books use different algorithms. The logic is obvious though because the higher the total, the less valuable each half-point is.

I suspect books put out the spread 1st because they only want 1 soft line in the public domain rather than 2. There's no reason to give the public 2 chances to beat them. Also with only 1 line any significant volume on a 'bad line' would mount up more quickly and be corrected at less cost to the book. Spread at -110 is likely less damaging than an error on the underdog on a -500; +350 line because it would be difficult to get 3.5+ times the amount of money on the spread and thus create the same liability.

i think lt profits nailed it, but then of course these places move on air from sharps so then you get bookmaker -4 on packers at -205 (47) and kc -4 -215 (55) when theoretically the packers should be the higher ml

good to see there are still intelligent discussions here where people can treat each other with respect

I was talking about openers because that was what The General was asking about. Once the openers are up though, more lopsided action on either the spread or monryline can throw things a bit out of whack such as the example you gave.
