The Rangers have reached a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights to acquire veteran F Ryan Reaves in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
It's a familiar face for head coach Gerard Gallant, who coached Reaves in his time with Vegas. The 34-year-old played just 37 games with the Knights last season, totaling just one goal and four assists.

    Dadonov to Vegas from Ottawa.

Knights also complete Martinez, Janmark extensions and sign back up goalie Brossoit.

They've already done what they wanted to do this off-season, and are now good to go.

NHL rejects Seattle Kraken's deal with goaltender Philipp Grubauer, noting violation of front-loaded contract rules, source says

    4:22 PM PT

    • Greg WyshynskiESPN

The NHL has rejected the free-agent contract the Seattle Kraken signed with goaltender Philipp Grubauer, a source confirmed on Sunday.
Grubauer, an unrestricted free agent from the Colorado Avalanche, signed a six-year, $35.4 million deal with the expansion team on Wednesday, with an average annual value of $5.9 million against the salary cap.
The contract was rejected by the NHL's central registry because it violated the league's requirements for a front-loaded contract. According to CapFriendly, which first reported the rejection, the $1.5 million variance in salary from 2022-23 ($6 million) to 2023-24 ($7.5 million) exceeds 25% of the first-year salary on the contract ($5 million).

The contract will have to be restructured and resubmitted to the NHL for approval. The Seattle Times reported Sunday that the Kraken have already done so, taking $250,000 from the third year and adding it to the second year, pending the league's review.
The NHL tightened up those salary rules in the new collective bargaining agreement, which was established in the summer of 2020. Front-loaded contracts in any "immediately adjacent years" can't exceed 25% variance with the first year of that contract, and any year of the contract can't exceed 60% variance from the highest year of the deal.

Grubauer, 29, was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy this season and considered one of the top goaltenders on the free-agent market after being unable to come to terms on an extension with the Avalanche.

Stepan signs one-year, $1.35 million contract with Hurricanes

Center was injured last season with Senators after trade by Coyotes

Derek Stepan signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

The 31-year-old forward scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 20 games with the Ottawa Senators last season. He missed the final 35 games because of a dislocated left shoulder sustained Feb. 23.
Stepan was traded to the Senators by the Arizona Coyotes on Dec. 26 for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft./p>
"Derek is an experienced two-way center who can play in all situations," Carolina general manager Don Waddell said. "We're thrilled to add another veteran to our lineup."
Selected by the New York Rangers in the second round (No. 51) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Stepan has scored 485 points (168 goals, 317 assists) in 759 regular-season games with the Senators, Coyotes and Rangers, and 54 points (20 goals, 34 assists) in 106 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The Hurricanes this offseason have acquired goalies Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta, defensemen Ian Cole, Tony DeAngelo and Brendan Smith, and forward Josh Leivo.

The Avalanche on Monday agreed to a one-year contract with Ryan Murray, the first defenseman selected in the 2012 NHL draft (second overall). Murray, 27, will make $2 million, per a league source.
Murray, 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, played last season with the New Jersey Devils, after playing his first seven with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was traded from Columbus to New Jersey for a fifth-round draft choice on Oct. 8, 2020. Murray had 14 points in 48 games for the Devils.

Several of Evander Kane's teammates don't want the 30-year-old winger to return to the Sharks this season, The Athletic's Kevin Kurz reported Tuesday, citing sources.
Kurz also confirmed a report by The Daily Faceoff that the Sharks attempted to trade Kane earlier this summer. Kane's teammates' issues with the winger reportedly were one of the main drivers for the Sharks to try and find him a new home.

Kane has Cup on tour in Chicago. He went up in a fire engine bucket with it and the cherry picker broke down so Kane was stuck up in the bucket with the Cup until they could fix the bucket. He also won the Cup again in a best of 7 floor hockey series with his buddies. I used to love floor hockey as a kid, imagine playing a floor hockey tourney for the Stanley Cup lol...

Thornton skating with team in Switzerland, unsure of NHL future

42-year-old free agent forward scored 20 points in 44 games with Maple Leafs last season

    NHL.com @NHLdotcom

Joe Thornton is practicing with HC Davos of the National League, the top professional league in Switzerland, while the unrestricted free agent forward decides on his NHL future.

The 42-year-old scored 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 44 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season after signing a one-year, $700,000 contract Oct. 16. He missed 10 games with a fractured rib from Jan. 22-Feb. 13.
Thornton, who has played 23 NHL seasons, scored one goal in a seven-game loss to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup First Round.
HC Davos begins its season Sept. 11; the NHL season begins Oct. 12.
"This came so sudden, I really haven't had time to think about it," Thornton said June 2 after Toronto was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. "First and foremost I have to be a dad for a little bit here. But yeah, I feel really, really healthy and really, really, good … And that's a good sign."
Thornton has a 10-year-old daughter, Ayla, and a 7-year-old son, River.
"It was hard," Thornton said. "… My focus has to turn to [my children] right now. It's a good feeling. I can't wait to spend a lot of time with them."
Thornton is No. 14 on the NHL scoring list with 1,529 points (425 goals, 1,104 assists) with the Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins, and is sixth in games played with 1,680. He has scored 134 points (32 goals, 102 assists) in 186 playoff games. Thornton has played the second-most regular-season games in NHL history without winning the Stanley Cup, behind former teammate Patrick Marleau (1,779).
Although the Maple Leafs, who have qualified for the postseason each of the past five seasons, have not won a round since 2004, Thornton said he likes Toronto's chances.
"These guys realize the expectations are different around here now and that's a good thing," Thornton said. "Moving forward, this group has a lot of great pieces, a lot of great people here, and it's going to move forward from here for sure."
Thornton previously practiced and played with HC Davos, including prior to last season when he scored 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 12 games with the Swiss team. He also played for HC Davos in 2004-05 when the NHL season was canceled, and in 2012-13 during the NHL lockout.

Pelech now too. Watch all these 8 year term defensemen signings tank with complacency. Kings did a one year extension with Clague, he'll probably put in a great year, and then be looking for an 8 year. Great year gets you eight year...

    Bergeron, Bruins discussing contract extension

Captain has one season remaining; GM says Krejci could return

Patrice Bergeron has discussed a contract extension with the Boston Bruins and however long the center wants to stay with the team is up to him, general manager Don Sweeney said Friday.

The Bruins captain has one season remaining on the eight-year, $52 million contract ($6.875 average annual value) he signed with the Bruins on July 12, 2013.
"Patrice and Kent Hughes, his representative, and I have had discussions about where Patrice is at," Sweeney said. "We'll keep those private as we do all the others and let him decide what path he wants to take. Obviously, it's a completely open door for how long Patrice wants to play the game for us, and we'll leave it at that."
Selected in the second round (No. 45) of the 2003 NHL Draft, the 36-year-old has scored 917 points (375 goals, 542 assists) in 1,143 games with the Bruins. He has scored 120 points (46 goals, 74 assists) in 160 Stanley Cup Playoff games and reached the Stanley Cup Final with the Bruins three times (2011, 2013, 2019), winning the Cup in 2011 when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games.
He has been a finalist for the Selke Trophy, awarded annually to the forward voted as the best to excel in the defensive aspects of the game, nine consecutive seasons and has won it four times (2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17), tied with Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens for the most in NHL history.
The futures of two other longtime Bruins, goalie Tuukka Rask and center David Krejci, are uncertain. Rask is an unrestricted free agent and is expected to miss the start of the season after having surgery for a torn labrum in his right hip. He is 306-163-66 with a 2.27 goals-against average. 921 save percentage and 52 shutouts in 560 games for the Bruins.
Krejci announced July 30 he would play this season in his native Czech Republic. He has scored 730 points (215 goals, 515 assists) in 962 regular-season games and 124 points (42 goals, 82 assists) in 156 postseason games.
Sweeney said there's a possibility Krejci could return.
"We'll see if somewhere down the road Krejci opens the door back up," Sweeney said. "But again, that's his own family decision and there's no timeline. We did have a heads up in that and where we were in the process of trying to fill in from a depth perspective in free agency."

Boston continues to work at contending... added Ullmark to team with rookie Swayman in net, and snagged Foligno. They're short a centre though. They're gonna try Coyle Just 16 points '20-21) between Hall and Smith, but that has to be considered a stop gap, unless Coyle can surprise. They may have to bring someone else in to make a Cup run.
