NFL Player News - Week of 5/18/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Bills | Stefon Diggs emerging as a deep threat last season
Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs' average depth of target in 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings was 14.8 yards - a six-yard increase from the 2018 campaign. Over his first four NFL seasons, it was no higher than 11.3.
Footballguys view: Diggs was great as a deep threat and should continue to be that for the Bills. We'll see if QB Josh Allen does a better job of connecting on deep throws. He's got a big arm but his accuracy is a bit erratic when throwing downfield. Diggs will make him look better, but Allen also needs to set up his receivers better with more accurate throws.

Texans | Darren Fells woeful as a run blocker in 2019
Houston Texans TE Darren Fells blew a block on 15 of his 296 snaps on rushing plays in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions. The resulting 5.1 blown-block percentage was the second-worst mark by a tight end since at least 2015, while the 15 blown blocks were the most by any tight end over the same span.

Eagles | Alshon Jeffery moved the chains last season
Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery picked up a first down on 83.7 percent of his catches last season, tying the Los Angeles Chargers' Mike Williams for the best mark in the league among players with at least 40 targets.
Footballguys view: Jeffery moved the chains and this year they'll be counting on him to do more of the same. He's not the same player he used to be as Jeffery has struggled with injuries and he is recovering from lis franc surgery in mid-December. His Week 1 status is unknown. Fantasy GMs are taking him off the board at WR47 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Vikings | Kyle Rudolph showed off hands in 2019
Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph did not record a drop in 2019, allowing him to join Miami Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki as the only tight ends to achieve that feat while seeing at least 40 targets.
Footballguys view: Rudolph is a favorite target of QB Kirk Cousins and the Gary Kubiak offense is quite tight end friendly. Rudolph will continue to split time at the position with Irv Smith. He was the no.15 fantasy tight end in 2019 but Rudolph is going late in drafts at this time if he's even getting picked at all.

    Mike Gesicki player page

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman a YAC monster
Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman averaged 11.5 yards after the catch per reception in 2019 - the highest average for any player with at least 25 catches.
Footballguys view: That's what Hardman does. He's got the speed to get by a defense but he can turn short passes into long gains because his speed is sometimes faster than angles defenders are trying to take to stop him.
    Link to story
    Mecole Hardman player page

Giants | Daniel Jones rocked on RPOs as a rookie
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed 15 of his 18 pass attempts on run-pass options (RPOs) for 140 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in 2019, making him the most efficient thrower on such plays per USA TODAY's Doug Farrar.
Footballguys view: Jones has the athleticism where RPOs work effectively. It's a new system for Jones this year with former head coach Pat Shurmur fired (now running the Broncos offense), so we'll see how much RPO the Giants continue to use.
    Link to story
    Daniel Jones player page

Browns | Baker Mayfield exceptional on designed rollouts
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 16 of his 20 pass attempts for 285 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions on designed rollouts in 2019.
Footballguys view: This sounds like the Browns should get Mayfield on more designed rollouts in 2020. The team worked diligently to improve the blocking in front of him and we could see Mayfield as a bounce-back player in 2020 because of that.
    Link to story
    Baker Mayfield player page

Vikings | Kirk Cousins made it happen on play-action
Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins threw for a league-high 13 touchdowns on play-action passes in 2019, according to USA TODAY's Doug Farrar.
Footballguys view: It's a Gary Kubiak system with the Vikings, so of course it features a ton of play action. Cousins is capable of faking a handoff then rolling out to find his receiver. This offense gives the quarterback three options (throw deep, throw short, run) on one side of the field (the rollout side) regularly. When executed properly, it's a tough offense to defend.
    Link to story
    Kirk Cousins player page

Rams | Jared Goff an oddity in today's game
Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff (68) was the only NFL quarterback in 2019 to attempt more than 50 passes on seven-step drops in 2019, according to USA TODAY's Doug Farrar.
Footballguys view: That's not something that happens much anymore. It used to be a staple in the NFL, but seven-step drops take time to develop and pass-rushers are getting too good in the NFL. The Rams use a West Coast system and that leans on running the ball effectively. If you can do that, those seven-step drops could be more fruitful.
    Link to story
    Jared Goff player page

Seahawks | Russell Wilson deadly on seven-step drops
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson completed 23 of his 30 pass attempts for 450 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions on seven-step drops in 2019. Those marks allowed him to post a league-best 157.6 passer rating on seven-step drops.
Footballguys view: Wilson is deadly on such drops because his athleticism can buy him more time if he needs too. A seven-step drop takes time to develop as a quarterback looks for his man downfield. Wilson can buy himself more time with his legs if something is not open when he gets to the end of his drop.
    Link to story
    Russell Wilson player page

Titans | Three-step drops suit Ryan Tannehill
Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Tannehill completed 96 of his 138 pass attempts for 1,356 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions on three-step drops in 2019. Those marks allowed him to post a league-best 123.9 passer rating on three-step drops.
Footballguys view: Three-step drops allow Tannehill to make quick decisions with the ball. The Titans run the ball really well and that usually makes defenses pay more attention to Derrick Henry. When Tannehill has to throw, the team likes to make things quick and decisive for the veteran quarterback.
    Link to story
    Ryan Tannehill player page

Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick on point in the red zone
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick posted an 89.8 QBR in the red zone in 2019 - good for third among NFL quarterbacks - according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: We'll see how long Fitzpatrick can stay the starter for the Dolphins. They selected potential franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft and he could take over for Fitzpatrick at some point this season. In fact, there's a chance that Tagovailoa wins the starting job for the Dolphins in training camp.
    Link to story
    Ryan Fitzpatrick player page

Packers | Aaron Rodgers aired it out in 2019
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers attempted 88 passes that traveled at least 20 yards in the air in 2019 - second only to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston (102) - according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: Rodgers wanted to make big plays happen with his arm last year...and pretty much every year of his pro career. The Packers didn't add talent around him in the wide receiving corps during the draft so he'll be trying to go deep with the same players around him as last year pretty much.
    Link to story
    Aaron Rodgers player page

Saints | Drew Brees torched man and zone last season
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was one of three quarterbacks to finish inside the top five in QBR against man coverage (78.6; fourth) and versus zone coverage (72.5; fifth) in 2019, according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: That's what Brees does...he torches defenses. Some may say Brees is not quite the quarterback he used to be and that's fine, Father Time catches up with everyone. However, Brees is still a top-tier passer and this type of success against man or zone coverage should continue this season.
    Link to story
    Drew Brees player page

Lions | Defense matters little to Matthew Stafford
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was one of three quarterbacks to finish inside the top five in QBR against man coverage (78.5; fifth) and versus zone coverage (77.6; third), according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: Stafford needs to stay healthy this year for the Lions to get things on track with head coach Matt Patricia. He's a franchise quarterback who has not had much around him in terms of a complete team during his pro career. This season has to be a make-or-break year for Patricia, and it could go a long way in determining the future of Stafford in Detroit too.
    Link to story
    Matthew Stafford player page

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes picked apart zones in 2019
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes posted an NFL-best 88.7 QBR versus zone coverage in 2019, according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: Mahomes isolates and eliminates quickly...the greatest traits you can have as a quarterback. Even before the snap, Mahomes is able to diagnose/anticipate coverage and isolate where he wants to go with the ball. Zone defenses (and most defenses) are helpless against the Chiefs superstar.
    Link to story
    Patrick Mahomes II player page

Ravens | Man coverage no match for Lamar Jackson
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson posted an NFL-best 91.0 QBR versus man coverage in 2019, according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.
Footballguys view: Jackson is a good passer who is only getting better. Man coverage has to stay on an island with the Ravens receivers while Jackson uses his athleticism to buy time and look for the right throw. That's why Jackson is so deadly against that type of coverage.
    Link to story
    Lamar Jackson player page

Raiders | Derek Carr burned the blitz in 2019
Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr posted an NFL-best 95.9 QBR against the blitz (defined as any play when the defense rushed five or more players) in 2019. Carr also led all quarterbacks in completion percentage (71.6) and yards per attempt (11.11) against the blitz.
Footballguys view: Carr played well when he was under duress in 2019. His spot at the top of the depth chart is under duress this offseason as the Raiders added Marcus Mariota in free agency. We'll see Carr and Mariota compete for the top spot in training camp.

    Tuesday Update

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger being babied by team
Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) has been ready to throw for 'some time,' NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said. The Steelers coaches have been overly cautious with Roethlisberger following elbow surgery last year.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady throws with teammates at prep school
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady conducted an on-field throwing session Tuesday, May 19, with several teammates at a local-area prep school. The session lasted about two hours, and Brady was seen walking through routes, including demonstrations of precise foot placement for making breaks. Brady was joined by WR Mike Evans, TE O.J. Howard, TE Cameron Brate, QB Blaine Gabbert, C Ryan Jensen, QB Ryan W. Griffin, WR Scott Miller and RB Dare Ogunbowale.

Seahawks | Tyler Lockett in rarified air
Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett became the first receiver to catch more than 90 percent of his catchable targets (92.1) and post an average depth of target of more than 12 yards (12.3) since at least 2015, according to Sports Info Solutions.

Broncos | Royce Freeman earning trust as a receiver

Packers | Jamaal Williams flashed sure hands in 2019

Chiefs | Damien Williams struggled on inside runs
Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams averaged a league-worst 2.6 yards per carry (minimum 100 attempts) on his 28 runs in between the guards in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions. Conversely, Williams averaged 4.2 yards per carry on 54 off-tackle plays and 6.8 yards per carry on his 29 runs outside the tackles.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey receiving splits

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake thrived on off-tackle runs

Vikings | Alexander Mattison loves running inside
Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison ran in between the guards on only 17 of his 100 carries as a rookie, but he led all running backs with 6.2 yards per carry on those runs (minimum 100 attempts), according to Sports Info Solutions.

Falcons | Matt Ryan on point the last two seasons
Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan led all quarterbacks with 440 on-target passes in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions. Ryan finished third with 474 on-target passes in 2018, trailing only Ben Roethlisberger (489) and Andrew Luck (485).

Bills | Josh Allen able to avoid tackles
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen forced 20 missed tackles while running in 2019, which ranked second among quarterbacks.
Footballguys view: Allen is an incredibly athletic quarterback and that helps him get by defenders. He's also a powerful runner who can blast through arm tackles. Expect more of the same in 2020.

Seahawks | Chris Carson made defenders miss
Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson forced 62 missed tackles during the 2019 season, which ranked third among running backs.

Browns | Nick Chubb elusive in 2019
Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb forced 66 missed tackles during the 2019 season, which ranked second among running backs.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson productive from pocket
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson threw 25 touchdowns from the pocket in 2019, which ranked first among quarterbacks.
Footballguys view: Jackson is dangerous as a runner and more lethal as a passer than some still want to give him credit for. We should see him continue to throw with accuracy from the pocket this season.
    Link to story
    Lamar Jackson player page

Ravens | Lamar Jackson successful at avoiding tackles
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson forced 42 missed tackles this past season, which ranked first among quarterbacks in the NFL.
Footballguys view: In other news, water is wet. Jackson is one of the most elusive quarterbacks to ever play this game. He's a more developed passer than some want to give him credit for, but Jackson is going to continue as an incredibly dangerous runner in 2020.
    Link to story
    Lamar Jackson player page

Colts | Nyheim Hines to be involved in passing game
Indianapolis Colts RB Nyheim Hines will be involved in the passing game and could catch as many as 10 passes in a game this upcoming season, according to head coach Frank Reich.
Footballguys view: Catching passes is what Hines does best. The Colts have Marlon Mack and rookie Jonathan Taylor as the lead backs to grind down defenses on the ground. Hines should play on passing downs and could be a favorite target in the way that Austin Ekeler was for Philip Rivers with the Chargers. In two seasons in the NFL, Hines has 107 receptions. We're projecting him for around 40 catches in 2020.
    Link to story
    Nyheim Hines player page

Chargers | LAC considered adding Cam Newton
Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers) was considered by the Los Angeles Chargers, but head coach Anthony Lynn said the team is confident in QBs Tyrod Taylor and Justin Herbert.
Footballguys view: The Chargers have a strong roster built on both sides of the ball, and they can win a lot of games with a quarterback like Tyrod Taylor. They'll see 2020 first-round pick Justin Herbert work as a developmental quarterback and perhaps franchise quarterback for the future. Newton is waiting for a chance with a new team but he might have to wait until someone gets hurt in camp or the preseason.
    Link to story
    Cam Newton player page

    Rams | Cooper Kupp sure-handed in 2019
Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp caught 94 of his 134 targets in 2019, good for a reception rate of 70.1 percent. Only New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas had a better percentage (80.5) among qualifying wide receivers (at least 130 targets).
Footballguys view: Kupp has always been a sure-handed target and that's going to continue in 2020. Fantasy GMs are taking Kupp off the board at WR8 (3.01) in 12-team PPR leagues. Last year in standard-scoring leagues, Kupp finished the year as the no.4 fantasy receiver. His 10 receiving touchdowns from 2019 will be difficult to reproduce, but he's still a must-start every week.
    Link to story
    Cooper Kupp player page

Colts | Philip Rivers expected to stay?
Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers is expected to stay with the team for more than one year, according to head coach Frank Reich.
Footballguys view: Let's see how Rivers plays this season before penciling him in for the 2021 season. The Colts nabbed the veteran coming off one of the most turnover-filled seasons of his pro career. Is Rivers done or can he bounce back and play better football in 2020? That's the big question that needs to be answered. If Rivers looks like he can still play at a high level, then of course the Colts would keep him around. If not, then they'll have to move on in a different direction.

    Wednesday Update

Patriots | Trainer effusive in praise of Devin Asiasi
New England Patriots TE Devin Asiasi has 'the catch radius of Austin (Hooper)' and the 'body control and awareness of Zach (Ertz),' according to California Strength CEO Dave Spitz, who is training Asiasi this spring after working with Hooper and Ertz in the past.'I think (Asiasi) has more bend, more wiggle, than both of them. He's a beautiful combination. Plus he brings his own set of qualities. As a route-runner, he's just gonna be so difficult to defend at the next level. ... There's something that's incredibly special that pops right away. This kid just has another level of command of his body and of his awareness. I just can't wait to see what it translates to in the league,' Spitz said.

Eagles | College coach praises Jalen Reagor
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jalen Reagor impressed outside receivers coach Malcolm Kelly during his time at TCU. 'He is one of those rare players who can do it all,' Kelly said. 'He literally can do it all. ... He has that rare combination of explosion, high-point ability - at 5-10, he can go up and high-point the ball like a 6-3 or 6-4 guy - and the ability to turn nothing into something.'

Chiefs | Clyde Edwards-Helaire has 'special traits'
Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire has 'some special traits,' according to offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy Tuesday, May 19. 'But also we want to make sure we're utilizing him the right way and making sure he's mentally prepared to go when it's time to go,' Bieniemy added.

Vikings | Adam Thielen excels in man coverage
Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen received a Pro Football Focus grade of 95.4 against Cover 1 defense on a target depth of 10-19 yards over the last three seasons to rank second among all wide receivers. Only New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas received a higher grade.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson wildly efficient on big plays
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson completed 26 touchdowns with just two turnover-worthy plays on passes 20-plus yards downfield in 2018 and 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: That's what Wilson has done for his whole NFL career. He is great at keeping plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. Wilson should continue his high level of play in 2020.

Saints | Michael Thomas promises to be ready for season
New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas isn't disclosing his offseason workout program, but he vows to be ready whenever he's needed on the field with teammates. 'I'll be ready when the season comes,' Thomas said. 'More than ready.'
Footballguys view: The Saints cancelled their virtual offseason under the direction of head coach Sean Payton. Thomas is arguably the best receiver in the game and there is no worry that he'll be ready whenever the team meets back at the facility.

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman valued as returner
Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman is expected to be used less in the return game this season as he becomes more involved in the offense, but special teams coordinator Dave Stoub still values his potential contributions as a returner. 'I'm not sure about Hardman. I don't want to lose him. I think he's just scratched the surface as a returner,' Stoub said.
Footballguys view: The Chiefs are returning 10-of-11 starters on offense this season. Hardman could get used more on offense at the expense of reps for guys like Sammy Watkins. He could still be a dangerous option as a return man in certain situations.
    Link to story

Dolphins | Preston Williams on schedule
Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) is on schedule in his return and is jogging, according to a team source. The Dolphins are optimistic he'll be ready for the regular-season opener after tearing his ACL last November.
Footballguys view: Williams looked fantastic as a rookie last year before he was hurt. He's got a fine size/speed combination and can make big plays. Since he's on track, Williams should be able to get to work in during training camp and the preseason.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady works out with several teammates
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady and approximately eight of his new teammates took part in a two-hour throwing session at Berkeley Preparatory School Tuesday, May 19.
Footballguys view: Brady is taking it upon himself to get work in with his new teammates while the league is still working through a 'virtual offseason.' It's no surprise given his veteran leadership and drive to be great. Working out together in any way possible is only going to help.

Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick open to starting or mentoring
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick recently said on the 'What's Next with Eric Wood' podcast he's looking forward to mentoring rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa in 2020. 'I'm really excited, I'm really excited that they drafted him,' Fitzpatrick said. 'I'm excited because I watched him play at Alabama and he seems like he's a pretty dynamic talent. For me, I'm his biggest cheerleader right now. ... Hopefully, some of the lessons I'm able to teach him are him watching me play, but if it's the other way around, I'm going to do my best to help him to succeed in the best way that he can,' Fitzpatrick said.
Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick should begin the season as the starter. The Dolphins have an improved roster and could win more games than some think with the veteran at the helm. Depending on Tagovailoa's health, the Dolphins may have Fitzpatrick as their starter for most of the season. There's a chance the team gives the 2020 first-round pick a redshirt year. If the team struggles with Fitzpatrick, and Tagovailoa is healthy, then they could turn things over to the rookie.

Broncos | Melvin Gordon built for Denver's system?
Denver Broncos RB Melvin Gordon says his new team's offensive system will 'help me get back to what I do best' and the Los Angeles Chargers' system 'wasn't built for me.'
Footballguys view: Gordon was a big-play back in college at Wisconsin. He has the speed to make field-flipping plays but with the Chargers he was more of a grinder. Gordon was good at that, picking up third downs regularly, and he certainly has a nose for the end zone. With the Broncos, OC Pat Shurmur's system will feature him as a the lead back with plenty of opportunities to gash defenses. Last year's starter Phillip Lindsay will get work in the backfield too as the team wants to keep both fresh.

Eagles | Nate Sudfeld has edge for backup role
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld is viewed as the frontrunner for the backup job over rookie QB Jalen Hurts, according to head coach Doug Pederson. 'Early on in this season ... teams are going to have to rely on their veterans. And Nate (Sudfeld) is one of those guys for us. ... I have a ton of confidence in Nate becoming our backup QB.' Pederson added Hurts will need to 'learn and pick up our system.'
Footballguys view: Sudfeld hsa experience in the league as a reserve behind Wentz and that gives him the advantage. Hurts has more upside in the long run but this year might be more of a third-string quarterback who plays as the Eagles version of Taysom Hill.

    Thursday Update

Dolphins | Josh Rosen drawing trade interest?
Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen has been the focus of a few trade calls this offseason, according to NFL Network's Michael Giardi, who also added the Dolphins are reportedly 'in no hurry to trade him.'
Footballguys view: Rosen is the odd man out in the Dolphins quarterback room. A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Rosen failed to impress with the team that drafted him (Arizona) and was so bad last year in Miami that he got benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick. Word behind the scene is that Rosen is working hard and is not a distraction but his game is just not translating to the pro level. Some team may want to take on chance on him with a late-round draft pick but he's running out of time to turn things around...even as a backup-caliber quarterback.

Titans | A.J. Brown in rare company
Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown in 2019 became the first rookie since Hall of Famer Randy Moss (1998) to have a minimum of 50 catches, 1,000 receiving yards and five touchdowns while averaging 17-plus yards per catch, plus four touchdown catches of 50-plus yards, according to Jim Wyatt of the team's website.
Footballguys view: The Titans have something special with the 2019 second-round pick. Brown is also the only NFL rookie since 1970 with 1,000-plus receiving yards and an average of 20-plus yards per reception, and he led the NFL with 605 receiving yards over his final six games of the regular season.
    Link to story
    A.J. Brown player page

Jets | NYJ anticipating rebound from Chris Herndon
New York Jets TE Chris Herndon was limited to one game and one catch last season after suffering a setback with his hamstring following his season-opening suspension. However, his lack of time on the field has not dampened the enthusiasm of head coach Adam Gase.'I think everyone can agree that we were all excited to see what he could do going into last year. We felt good about so many things, and it just didn't work out with the suspension and the injury. Then we finally get him on the field and he played like (18) plays. He's a guy that we're excited to get back and can't really wait to get going. And see how he'll fit in with everything,' Gase told the New York Post.
Footballguys view: Remember what Herndon was in 2018 (39 catches, 502 yards, four touchdowns) and remember the excitement that Fantasy GMs had for him entering last year? That could be there again if he's healthy. Was he a flash in the pan or is something more? Herndon has intriguing upside but there are a ton of questions around his game.

    49ers | Raheem Mostert eyeing 200-plus carries
San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert has added some muscle to his frame - he played last season around 205 pounds - in anticipation that he will handle at least 200 carries in 2020.
Footballguys view: Mostert finished the season strong for the 49ers and he was good in the postseason. He will compete for playing time with Tevin Coleman and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is known for using multiple backs which limits everyone's fantasy value in this backfield. We'll see how this shakes out during training camp but things could also change with Shanahan's usage of running backs during the regular season.

Texans | Coach optimistic about Will Fuller
Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (groin) appears to be on track with his recovery from surgery, according to offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.
Footballguys view: In four seasons (42 games), Fuller has never played a full 16-game season due to various injuries. We'll see if he can finally play all year long as the team needs him in a big way since they traded away DeAndre Hopkins. Fuller can be drafted as a WR4 with upside.

Eagles | Devonta Freeman an option for Eagles?
Free-agent RB Devonta Freeman (Falcons) has received interest from Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.
Footballguys view: The Eagles are sniffing around veteran backs still available on the open market. Some had speculated they were considering bringing back LeSean McCoy last week, and now this report about Freeman. Either way, the Eagles are likely just looking for veteran depth and experience behind starter Miles Sanders. No matter who is added, we don't think they'll cut into Sanders touches too much this season.
    Link to story
    Devonta Freeman player page

Jets | NYJ have considered Devonta Freeman
Free-agent RB Devonta Freeman (Falcons) has received interest from New York Jets this offseason.
Footballguys view: The Jets have an interesting...and crowded backfield shaping up for the 2020 season. Le'Veon Bell is the starter with Frank Gore behind him as the veteran banger. Add in rookie La'Mical Perine, veterans Kenneth Dixon, Josh Adams and Trenton Cannon and that's a full (and multi-talented) room. Freeman is waiting for his new opportunity and the news around him seems to be picking up. We'll see if he can latch on with a new team before training camp.
    Link to story

Seahawks | More on Seattle's offer to Devonta Freeman

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Devonta Freeman (Falcons) has received a one-year contract offer from the Seattle Seahawks worth as much as $4 million.
Footballguys view: Seattle does not expect former first-round pick Rashaad Penny to be ready for the start of the regular season. That leaves Chris Carson as the talented but sometimes banged up starter and a rookie in DeeJay Dallas behind him. Seattle could use a veteran presence like Freeman even though he's not the same player he used to be.
    Link to story

Seahawks | Seattle considering Carlos Hyde

Free-agent RB Carlos Hyde (Texans) has received some interest from the Seattle Seahawks this offseason.
Footballguys view: There has been some buzz around Hyde possible joining the Eagles, but the Seahawks could use a veteran back as well. Hyde is coming off a 1,000 yard season with the Texans and could be at least a short-yardage and goal-line banger for any team that adds him.
    Link to story
    Carlos Hyde player page

Browns | Jarvis Landry ahead of schedule
Cleveland Browns WR Jarvis Landry (hip) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from hip surgery and hopes to be ready for football activities in August.
Footballguys view: Good news for Landry and the Browns here. Things went off track last year with the Browns offense, and they're hoping to get things corrected this year with a new coach and a new offense. Landry had surgery in February and doesn't exactly know when he'll be ready but the target date is August. That means he'll be limited in training camp and the preseason if he's ready by that time. The Browns expect to have him for Week 1 of the regular season.

Browns | Harrison Bryant signs contract with CLE
Cleveland Browns fourth-round draft choice TE Harrison Bryant signed a four-year contract with the Browns Wednesday, May 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: A former high school offensive tackle, Bryant has the ability as a blocker to be a 'Y' tight end. He's no slouch as a receiver at all. Bryant led all tight ends in college football with 65 receptions for 1,004 yards (15.4 per) while snaring seven touchdowns in 12 starts. He'll learn behind Austin Hooper and David Njoku as a rookie but we love his dynasty prospects.
    Link to story

Browns | Cleveland signs Donovan Peoples-Jones
Cleveland Browns sixth-round draft choice WR Donovan Peoples-Jones signed a four-year contract with the Browns Wednesday, May 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The Michigan wide receiver has a big frame and knows how to use it to secure passes. He doesn't have elite speed but his skill set and reliability have the look of a big slot receiver at the pro level. The Browns WR corps is jam-packed with talent, so Peoples-Jones may not do much as a rookie. Instead, we'll keep an eye on him in super deep dynasty formats.
    Link to story

Falcons | Hayden Hurst working out with QB
Atlanta Falcons TE Hayden Hurst said he has been traveling to Atlanta over the past four weeks in order to work out with QB Matt Ryan.
Footballguys view: A former first-round pick of the Ravens, Hurst was never able to play up to his potential in Baltimore. He now gets a fresh start, while still having first-round tools, with the Falcons. Hurst said the workouts are improving his chemistry with Ryan and it will pay off during training camp.

    Redskins | Antonio Gandy-Golden recovered from COVID-19
Washington Redskins WR Antonio Gandy-Golden (illness) released a statement Wednesday, May 20, through his agent, announcing the rookie was diagnosed with COVID-19 after a March 24 test. His symptoms were mild, and after two weeks of quarantine, Gandy-Golden was fully cleared April 7 and is now at 100 percent.
Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. Gandy-Golden is a small-school prospect with big upside. He was a star at Liberty but proved at the Senior Bowl that he could shine against a higher competition level. Washington has a wide open depth chart at wide receiver behind Terry McLaurin. We'll see Gandy-Golden compete for a starting spot and to establish himself in that pecking order during training camp.
    Link to story

Eagles | Miles Sanders ready for major role
Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders told SiriusXM Radio Tuesday, May 19, he is 'absolutely' ready for a larger role in the offense. 'I believe that's why they drafted me in the first place,' Sanders said. 'It was really just a switch, honestly, that turned. All of a sudden, I was a starting running back, and I didn't start at the beginning of the season. So, I just looked at it as an opportunity, and I just attacked it.'
Footballguys view: Sanders has just shown us the tip of the iceberg in terms of what he can do at the pro level. The Eagles may add a veteran back to the mix (LeSean McCoy?), but it would only be as a depth player behind Sanders. He doesn't have to split time anymore with Jordan Howard and Sanders has the skill set to be a RB1 for Fantasy GMs this year, especially in PPR formats. His current ADP is RB13 (2.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | New Orleans to hold competition for backup job
New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will have to compete and beat out the competition to back up QB Drew Brees in 2020, according to head coach Sean Payton Thursday, May 21.
Footballguys view: The word is Hill is going to get more playing time this year, even if that's as a gadget/third-string quarterback. Winston has all the starting experience and is the better passer, so we're expecting him to win the primary backup job behind Brees.

Patriots | Danny Vitale excited for role with New England
New England Patriots FB Danny Vitale said he signed with the team as a free agent largely due to how they've used fullbacks in the past. 'There's only a handful of teams that use fullbacks now these days,' said Vitale. 'Seeing all the amazing things that James Develin (retired) did over the last couple years, that's obviously enticing for a fullback.' Vitale also said he can bring a lot of different things to the team. 'I played a lot in the slot (in college at Northwestern), on the wing, fullback when we used it, and played a lot of receiver basically as well. Just a versatile player who can do a little bit everything and it was good for me because it kept me on the field.'

Chiefs | Talks with Patrick Mahomes to begin this summer
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had his fifth-year option picked up for the 2021 season this offseason, but team chairman Clark Hunt said Wednesday, May 20, the team will begin negotiations on a long-term contract extension this summer. 'What he has said and what we've said, both sides is, he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that's our mentality as well,' Hunt said. 'We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that's what we're going to be shooting for.'
Footballguys view: Mahomes is going to set the new mark for quarterbacks. We could see him get a deal that pays him around $50 million per year. No matter what, the Chiefs aren't going to let him hit the open market anytime soon.

Dolphins | Malcolm Perry listed as running back
Miami Dolphins WR Malcolm Perry is listed as a running back on the team's official roster, but he is also expected to be used as a slot receiver and possible returner.
Footballguys view: Perry was a college quarterback at Navy, but the 2020 seventh-round pick could work as a Julian Edelman-type in the NFL. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry and can easily make defenders miss in the open field.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson successful against blitz
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw 13 touchdown passes against the blitz this past season.
Footballguys view: Wilson has always been able to beat the blitz with ease. It's tough to get home on him because he's athletic and keeps his eyes downfield when scrambling.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson outstanding against blitz
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson threw 24 touchdown passes against the blitz this past season.
Footballguys view: Defenses are often nearly helpless against Jackson. If you blitz him he only gets better. It's a similar situation with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. We'll continue to see Jackson develop as a passer while he also gashes opponents on the ground with his elite rushing skill.

Eagles | Philadelphia looking at three RBs
Free-agent RB Devonta Freeman (Falcons), RB Carlos Hyde (Texans) and RB LeSean McCoy (Chiefs) are the three running backs the Philadelphia Eagles are currently considering signing, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The Eagles are looking for veteran depth behind Miles Sanders. It would be easy to bring back McCoy to the Eagles, and he knows what to do in that offense. He might be the cheaper of all the options listed. We should see all three of these backs sign somewhere before the start of training camp.

NFL | Josh Gordon looking for reinstatement
Free-agent WR Josh Gordon (Seahawks) plans to apply for reinstatement in the near future, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Gordon is not the same player he used to be but there should be some team interested in bringing him in as a backup receiver. Last year in five games with the Seahawks, Gordon snared seven passes for 139 yards. He also played six games for the Patriots in 2019, catching 20 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown.

Buccaneers | Rob Gronkowski close to playing weight
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski said he is around 257 pounds at this point and expects to play at 260 to 265 pounds this upcoming season. He was at 240 pounds during his retirement.
Footballguys view: It doesn't take long for these top-tier athletes to get back to playing weight. Gronkowski is in a cramped and super talented tight end room with O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate in Tampa. He's a favorite target of Brady and could be featured in the red zone.

Jets | Frank Gore did not consider retirement
New York Jets RB Frank Gore said he did not consider retirement this offseason because he believed that he can play at least one more season.
Footballguys view: Of course Gore did not consider retirement! It seems like he's going to play forever but we honestly know this could be the final year for the future Hall of Fame running back. He'll work in behind Le'Veon Bell with the Jets in 2020.

NFL | Cam Newton throws, works out online
Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers) posted a series of videos this week on Instagram that show his surgically repaired foot is healthy, and his injured shoulder also is up to par.
Footballguys view: Newton is still out there on the open market, but he'll latch on with a team before training camp. There is debate about whether or not he'd be comfortable with a backup role. However, most of the spots where he could at least compete for the starting job (Chicago, Jacksonville) are already filled.

Lions | Matt Patricia talks D'Andre Swift
Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia discussed drafting RB D'Andre Swift and the team's utilization of the running back position during a Wednesday, May 20, appearance on NBC's 'The Rich Eisen Show.' 'For me, we're going to try to play whoever is going to help us in that particular play, that particular game, whatever it might be,' he said. 'If you're out there for the very first play, or you get out there on the second play, I don't really understand what the difference is in a starter in that case. But, certainly, we're excited to be able to acquire Swift and get him on our team and seeing what he can do. Sometimes you put two or three running backs out there. We will see what happens.' Patricia said he didn't have to think twice about landing Swift in Round 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft. 'Everything checked the boxes for us, a guy that we think is dynamic enough in the run-game, explosive, big playmaker,' Patricia said, 'but (he) also can catch the ball, get out of the backfield, open up the formation and just put a lot of pressure on the defense to make plays we need.'
Footballguys view: The Lions have been looking for 'that guy' at the running back position since Barry Sanders retired. Swift was arguably the most talented back in this class and he's got a three-down skill set so he doesn't need to come off the field. If we had more confidence about Patricia's direction of the team we'd be more excited. Right now, Fantasy GMs are taking Swift off the board at RB35 (8.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott turns down huge deal?
Updating an ongoing story, Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott turned down a five-year, $175 million contract offer, according to NBC Sports' Chris Simms. It would have made Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.
Footballguys view: The numbers is huge but it's all about the language of the deal. Prescott could set the market for the position, but it won't be long until Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) crushes that deal. Prescott's representation reportedly is seeking a deal that will play him more than $45 million for the final season of a new contract.

For somebody I think can easily be replaced I would agree. You light lose some but I’d hardly think it’d be noticeable
