NFL Player News - Week of 3/30/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

NFL | James Morgan gaining steam
Florida International QB James Morgan is generating 'lots of buzz' and could end up being a Day 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to an NFL personnel executive.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard ready to rebound?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard's 'eyes should light up' at the opportunity to play with QB Tom Brady, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'You have a quarterback who throws to the tight end, go earn it and get balls thrown to you,' Arians said.

Buccaneers | Competition for Ronald Jones?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones could face new competition for snaps on third down next season, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'We'd love to have a pass-catching back,' Arians said.

Cowboys | Blake Bell headed to Dallas
Free-agent TE Blake Bell (Chiefs) agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal worth $1.7 million with $450,000 guaranteed, according to a source.

Bills | Receivers did Josh Allen no favors in 2019
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen had a league-high 7.2 percent of his pass attempts dropped last season.
Footballguys view: There's a reason why the Bills made a huge trade for WR Stefon Diggs. Allen should see more consistent help from his receivers this year, led by Diggs.
    Link to story
    Josh Allen player page

Browns | Deflections hurt Baker Mayfield in 2019
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield had a league-high 20 passes batted down at or behind the line of scrimmage in 2019.
Footballguys view: Mayfield is short and that means his passes have a better chance of getting batted. He needs to lower that number in 2020 and the team needs to help him by designing plays that give him more wide open passing lanes.
    Link to story
    Baker Mayfield player page

Vikings | Kirk Cousins cozy in pocket last season
Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins enjoyed a league-high average of 2.7 seconds in the pocket in 2019.
Footballguys view: Cousins is set up by play-action passing in the Gary Kubiak offense. That type of comfort level in the pocket is helped by the design of the system.
    Link to story
    Kirk Cousins player page

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes more comfortable in 2019
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was hurried 54 times in 2019 - a significant drop from a league-high 121 times in 2018.
Footballguys view: Mahomes is playing at a level that few can match. That comfort level with the offense should just continue to get stronger with the more experience that he gets.
    Link to story
    Patrick Mahomes II player page

Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick took a beating in 2019
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was hit while passing a league-high 66 times last season - tied with New York Giants QB Daniel Jones for the most in the NFL.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins are working on upgrading the offense as a whole, including the offensive line. They will have Fitzpatrick as a starting option but the team should also add a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Someone like Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) should be starting for them in the near future.
    Link to story
    Ryan Fitzpatrick player page
    Daniel Jones player page

Ravens | Run-action important to Lamar Jackson
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson executed a league-high 173 run-pass option (RPO) plays in 2019 - 65 more than second-place Kyler Murray (108). Jackson also ranked third in play-action pass attempts with 163.
Footballguys view: Jackson is dangerous as a runner and a passer. Using run-action before passing helps freeze defenders who are so worried about Jackson's ability to run. This type of production should continue in 2020.
    Link to story
    Lamar Jackson player page

Broncos | Courtland Sutton hard to bring down
Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton led all receivers with 12 broken tackles on receptions in 2019. Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson, former Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp tied for second among receivers with nine.
Footballguys view: Sutton is big, fast and physical. He had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2019 with 72 catches for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns. The best is still yet to come with Sutton as he did all that last year while working with three different (Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, Drew Lock) quarterbacks last year. Expect him to be a favorite target of Lock with borderline WR1 production for Fantasy GMs.

Falcons | Todd Gurley's hands betrayed him in 2019
Atlanta Falcons RB Todd Gurley was charged with the dropped pass on a league-high 14.3 percent of his targets in 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams. Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay (12.5) and Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook (11.1) were the only other qualified running backs with a drop rate of higher than nine percent.
Footballguys view: Gurley got a one-year, 'prove it' deal with the Falcons. It would be great for him and the team if he could be more reliable as a target out of the backfield in 2020.
    Link to story
    Todd Gurley player page

    Phillip Lindsay player page

Patriots | Julian Edelman lacked sure hands last season
New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman was charged with a league-high 13 drops in 2019 - five more than he had in 2018.
Footballguys view: Edelman is going to have a different quarterback tossing him passes this year with Tom Brady gone to the Buccaneers. We'll see if he can be more sure-handed to help out the team's new starter.
    Link to story
    Julian Edelman player page

Jets | Le'Veon Bell got little help from line in 2019
New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell (1.2) averaged 1.2 yards before contact per attempt in 2019 - tied with Benny Snell for the worst mark in the league among qualified rushers last season.
Footballguys view: Bell is better than the numbers he posted last year. Now, he may not be the player he used to be when he was with the Steelers but Bell should be more productive in 2020, especially if he gets better blocking.
    Link to story
    Le'Veon Bell player page

Jaguars | O-line play hurt Leonard Fournette in 2019
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette finished fifth in the league among qualified rushers in fewest yards before contact per attempt (1.4) in 2019. Meanwhile, his three yards after contact per attempt was good for the third-best mark in the league.
Footballguys view: Fournette had to do a lot of the work himself in 2019. That was because teams were stacking the line to stuff the run when QB Gardner Minshew (as a rookie) was thrust into the starting lineup. We'll see if the Jags O-Line can help Fournette out more this season with a more experienced Minshew under center.
    Link to story
    Leonard Fournette player page

49ers | San Fran RBs benefited from good blocking
San Francisco 49ers RBs Raheem Mostert (3.5) and Matt Breida (3.3) ranked first and second, respectively, in the league among running backs in average yards before contact per attempt last season.
Footballguys view: The 49ers could plug-and-play at the running back position and produce last year. Expect that trend to continue this upcoming season with Mostert, Breida, Tevin Coleman and perhaps even Jerick McKinnon.
    Link to story
    Raheem Mostert player page

Packers | Accuracy eluded Aaron Rodgers in 2019
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was charged with a 'bad throw' on a league-high 21.2 percent of his passes in 2019.
Footballguys view: Rodgers just launches passes from all sorts of platforms, so his 'bad throw' percentage is going to be a bit higher than some others. He is still going to be his type of quarterback, and that comes with some impossible throws he can make happen.
    Link to story
    Aaron Rodgers player page

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo on point last season
San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was 'on target' - defined as a throw that would have hit the receiver - on 80.7 percent of his passes in 2019 - the fourth-highest mark in the league.
Footballguys view: Garoppolo should have been 'on target' to Emmanuel Sanders in the Super Bowl. Ugh...moving on. He's a smart and accurate quarterback who should be getting some help at the wide receiver position in the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story
    Jimmy Garoppolo player page

Buccaneers | Tom Brady off the mark a lot in 2019
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was charged with 116 'bad throws' in 2019, six fewer than league leader Jameis Winston - his predecessor in Tampa Bay.
Footballguys view: We'll see Brady can clean that up in his new offense. He's good at attacking underneath routes but Brady did grade out well when targeting players deep -- a hallmark of the Bruce Arians offense.
    Link to story
    Tom Brady player page
    Jameis Winston player page

Cowboys | Dak Prescott plagued by drops
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was on the wrong end of an NFL-high 36 drops last season.
Footballguys view: Prescott posted good numbers in 2019 and they would have been even better if his receivers didn't let him down. The franchise tagged player will be getting a new deal with the Cowboys in the near future that makes him the highest paid or near-highest paid quarterback in the league.
    Link to story
    Dak Prescott player page

Lions | Geronimo Allison stays in the division, joins Lions
Unrestricted free-agent WR Geronimo Allison (Packers) agreed to a one-year, $910,000 contract Sunday, March 29, and the deal includes a $137,500 signing bonus.
Footballguys view: Allison is big and athletic, and now he gets a fresh start with the Lions. He's good at tracking the ball and has the body control to make plays near the sideline or the back of the end zone.
    Link to story
    Geronimo Allison player page

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham appears to be favorite for starting job
The New England Patriots' starting quarterback job appears to be QB Jarrett Stidham's to lose, according to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. The team is not expected to pursue a mid-tier veteran quarterback this offseason.
Footballguys view: Stidham had first-round tools and was projected as a top quarterback before his senior season at Auburn. He fell to the mid rounds of the draft where the Patriots scooped him up last year. Stidham is tough and accurate as a passer, but this leap to the starting lineup is going to be huge for the young quarterback. If Stidham is the Patriots starter, expect the team to help him out by running the ball and playing great defense.

    Jarrett Stidham player page

Dolphins | Jordan Howard completely healthy
Miami Dolphins RB Jordan Howard (shoulder) said he is completely recovered from the shoulder injury that bothered him at the end of the 2019 season.
Footballguys view: Howard is going to be the grinder for the Dolphins offense. He can work well as a power option as a two-down back in 2020. His role limits his fantasy value, especially in PPR leagues but Howard should get enough carries (and his touchdowns will help) to be a RB2 or flex option for Fantasy GMs.

Why? What are they doing exactly? They aren’t winning more than 5 games.

They spent money on free agents, but Shaq Lawson and Ereck Flowers have been underachievers since getting to the NFL. Those seem like head scratching signings.

    Tuesday Update

Jaguars | Improvisation part of Gardner Minshew's game

Seahawks | Seattle officially adds Phillip Dorsett

Texans | Houston signs two players
Updating previous reports, free-agent QB AJ McCarron (Texans) and S Jaylen Watkins (Chargers) officially signed with the Houston Texans Monday, March 30. Official terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: McCarron is going to resume his role as a backup to Deshaun Watson. We've seen what happens when he plays, so the Texans will not be in great shape if Watson has to miss time.
    Link to story
    AJ McCarron player page

Packers | Tyler Ervin's deal official

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Tyler Ervin officially re-signed with the Green Bay Packers Monday, March 30. Official terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Ervin is a lightning quick back but he won't touch the ball much on offense. Instead, he'll work as a reserve player behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, plus Ervin will play on special teams.
    Link to story
    Tyler Ervin player page

Panthers | Curtis Samuel not expected to be moved
Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel is not on the trade block and likely will not be moved this offseason, according to The Athletic's Joseph Person.
Footballguys view: There was some speculation that Samuel could be on the move via trade. With the addition of Robby Anderson in free agency, the Panthers seem to have a new No.1 receiver. We think Samuel could be a fine fit with new starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Samuel is super quick and dangerous after the catch on short passes.
    Link to story
    Curtis Samuel player page

Vikings | Minnesota checks in with Jarius Wright
Free-agent WR Jarius Wright (Panthers) has received some interest from the Minnesota Vikings but is not expected to join the Vikings, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Wright played with the Vikings for six years after he was a fourth-round pick for them coming out of Arkansas in 2012. He'll be looking for work as a reserve receiver and special teams player.
    Link to story
    Jarius Wright player page

Lions | Marvin Jones sets big goal
Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones said he wants to catch at least 15 touchdowns this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: Jones caught 10 touchdowns once in his career back in 2013 when he played for the Bengals. Catching 15 would be quite the career high total, and it would have to come with Matthew Stafford staying healthy for a full 16-game season.
    Link to story

Redskins | Dwayne Haskins to open camp as starter
Washington Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins will open training camp as the No. 1 quarterback but will have to compete for the job during the preseason, according to head coach Ron Rivera.
Footballguys view: Kyle Allen was added for competition and he will push Haskins for the starting job. Haskins flashed as a rookie in 2019 but he was not picked by the current staff so he could have a short hook as the starter -- if he even wins the starting job in camp.
    Link to story
    Dwayne Haskins player page

Chargers | Bolts met with Justin Herbert
Oregon QB Justin Herbert has met with Los Angeles Chargers representation via video conference, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Monday, March 30.
Footballguys view: Herbert could be the pick for the Chargers with the No.6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. They have Tyrod Taylor as their starter but he may not be a long-term solution. There is a chance that Herbert isn't even on the board at that time.
    Link to story

Raiders | Justin Herbert meets with Las Vegas
Oregon QB Justin Herbert is scheduled for a video conference with Las Vegas Raiders representation Monday, March 30.
Footballguys view: There is little chance that Herbert is still on the board by the time the Raiders pick at No.12 overall in the first round. Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota are there to compete for the starting job but there's a shot the Raiders add a rookie to the mix.
    Link to story

Rams | Brandin Cooks not on the trade block
Los Angeles Rams WR Brandin Cooks is not on the trading block, according to two sources.
Footballguys view: There was some buzz a couple of weeks ago that the Rams could be shopping Cooks. In fact, the reports speculated that Cooks had been on the trade block for most of the offseason but had no takers. It looks like he's not going anywhere and will stay with the Rams to stretch the field with his incredible speed.

Buccaneers | Ronald Jones tough to tackle
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones averaged a broken tackle once every 7.5 rushing attempts in 2019 - good for the fourth-best mark among qualified rushers in the league. His 23 total broken tackles ranked 11th among all players.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson ran out of RPOs a lot in 2019

Saints | Drew Brees locked in last season

Broncos | Phillip Lindsay extension on back burner
Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay is set to become a restricted free agent in 2021, and while general manager John Elway has yet to completely dismiss the possibility of signing him to a long-term contract, he doesn't appear to be motivated to address the matter anytime soon.'We'll see what happens. ... That's not a guarantee,' Elway said.

Redskins | Kyle Allen to compete for starting job?
Washington Redskins QB Kyle Allen said Tuesday, March 31, he expects to compete for a starting job for the 2020 season. 'I think that's an awesome opportunity,' he said.
Footballguys view: The Panthers moved on from Allen because they signed Teddy Bridgewater in free agency. Allen is back with Ron Rivera but now in Washington. We'll see if his experience as a starter helps him push 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins for the starting job.
    Link to story

Jets | NYJ may not be done at QB
The New York Jets may still look to add another backup QB in free agency after re-signing David Fales Tuesday, March 31, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.
Footballguys view: That would be for the best. They've got Sam Darnold at the top of the depth chart but could use competition at the position for the backup job.
    Link to story

Jets | David Fales back with Gang Green
Free-agent QB David Fales (Jets) re-signed with the New York Jets on a one-year deal Tuesday, March 31, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Fales is a veteran quarterback who knows what Adam Gase wants. He gets rid of the ball quickly but would not be much of an effective starter if he is thrust into the starting lineup due to injury.
    Link to story

Colts | Daurice Fountain signs tender
Indianapolis Colts WR Daurice Fountain signed his contract tender for the 2020 season Tuesday, March 31.
Footballguys view: We'll still keep an eye on Fountain in super crazy deep dynasty formats. When healthy, Fountain has good quickness and body control as a receiver.
    Link to story

Bears | Nick Foles officially joins Bears
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles was officially acquired by the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 31, in exchange for the No. 140 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: It's officially official now and Foles is with the Bears to compete for the starting job. We'll see if he can push Mitchell Trubisky out of that starting job in training camp.
    Link to story
    Nick Foles player page

Cardinals | Arizona looking at Zack Moss
Former Utah RB Zack Moss has been looked at by the Arizona Cardinals as an option for the 2020 NFL Draft, according to a source Tuesday, March 31.
Footballguys view: Moss should be a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The Utes running back has size at 223 pounds and is tough to bring down as a runner. On 66 career catches, Moss broke 33 tackles and showed that he is dangerous in space with good moves. He's not a threat to break off big runs, but he is consistent and powerful. Moss could be a bellcow back at the pro level and has drawn comparisons to Kareem Hunt (Browns) by some in the scouting community.

Colts | Adam Vinatieri's future still in limbo
Indianapolis Colts PK Adam Vinatieri (knee) still has not made a decision on his playing status for the 2020 season, according to head coach Frank Reich Tuesday, March 31. The Colts would like for Vinatieri to continue his rehab from season-ending knee surgery before making a decision. '(We plan) to have a sitdown with Adam and see where he's at once he's a little further along in that process,' Reich said.

Cardinals | Arizona discussing DeAndre Hopkins' contract
Arizona Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins has had 'some conversations' with general manager Steve Keim regarding his contract, according to chairman Michael Bidwill Tuesday, March 31.
Footballguys view: Hopkins has three years remaining on his deal and is going to get paid around $13 million annually. That's low for his skill set and production level that should continue with his new team. Reporters have speculated that Hopkins wants around $18-20 million per year, so you can see how far off the two sides are. Worst case scenario, Hopkins holds out for a new deal but chances of that seem low. We'll see if the Cardinals re-works his deal to get him more money.

    Thursday Update

Vikings | Tackling Alexander Mattison a chore in 2019
Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison averaged a broken tackle once every 9.1 carries on his 100 rushing attempts in 2019 - good for the eighth-best mark in the league among qualified rushers.

Raiders | Josh Jacobs produced after contact in 2019
Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs ranked fifth in the league with 683 yards rushing after contact in 2019. He was also one of only six players with at least 200 carries to average a broken tackle at least once every 10 rushing attempts (9.3).

Cowboys | Tony Pollard hard to corral
Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard was credited with 10 broken tackles on 86 rushing attempts in 2019, joining Malcolm Brown as the only players with fewer than 100 carries to break at least 10 tackles.

Chargers | Tyrod Taylor on track for starting job
Los Angeles Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor is considered the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job but a final decision has not been made, according to head coach Anthony Lynn.
Footballguys view: The Chargers have the No.6 overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Taylor could be the starter for now, but if the team adds someone like Justin Herbert (Oregon) or Jordan Love (Utah State) then we could see them make a switch sometime in the 2020 season.

    Tyrod Taylor player page

Titans | TEN talking with Derrick Henry
Tennessee Titans franchise free-agent RB Derrick Henry's representatives have talked with the Titans about a long-term contract, according to general manager Jon Robinson.
Footballguys view: The two sides have until July 15 to get a deal done. Henry is the centerpiece of what the Titans do on offense, and he'll continue to be that for them in 2020 and beyond (if/when they work out a new deal). It's going to be expensive as Henry will be one of the highest-paid running backs in the league once he gets a new contract.

NFL | Tua Tagovailoa proclaims he's completely healthy
Updating previous reports, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) said he is 100 percent recovered from a 2019 season-ending hip injury and could play today.
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa was just cleared for football drills about a month ago. He injured his hip last November and has been working his way back ever since then. Tagovaioloa is set to be a top-5 pick in the 2020 NFL draft but he does come with an injury history.

Jets | GM talks Quincy Enunwa's status
Updating previous reports, New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa (neck) is 'still going through the process,' according to general manager Joe Douglas. 'We should have some more information on that hopefully soon. Obviously that's a big question mark for us moving forward,' Douglas told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
Footballguys view: There's likely a 50 percent chance that Enunwa will be able to continue his career. We'll know more once he gets checked out as the season draws closer.

    Patriots | Cody Kessler released
New England Patriots QB Cody Kessler was released Wednesday, April 1, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer are the only quarterbacks on the roster right now. Perhaps the Patriots are going to consider adding Cam Newton in the near future. Stay tuned.

Colts | Indy video chats with Jordan Love
Utah State QB Jordan Love participated in a predraft video meeting with the Indianapolis Colts, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Colts were in position for Love at No.13 overall but they traded the pick to the 49ers for DeForest Buckner. Now, they don't have a first-round pick and Love is highly unlikely to fall to the second round. In fact, he's unlikely to fall out of the top 12 of the draft.
    Link to story

Chargers | Jordan Love meets with Bolts
Utah State QB Jordan Love participated in a predraft video meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Chargers could be considering Love at No.6 overall. He's one of the most exciting quarterbacks in this draft class but could use some time to develop. The Chargers could add him and sit Love behind Tyrod Taylor until the rookie is ready to take over.
    Link to story

Raiders | Jordan Love met with Las Vegas reps via video
Utah State QB Jordan Love participated in a predraft video meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Raiders have loved Love for some time now. We'll see if they go ahead and add him in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. The Raiders already have Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota but neither are exciting options for the long-term. Love could be an option for the Raiders if he's on the board when they pick at No.12 overall.
    Link to story

Packers | Green Bay teleconferences with Jordan Love
Utah State QB Jordan Love conducted a predraft video meeting with the Green Bay Packers, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Love is an athletic quarterback with nearly flawless mechanics but he's far from a finished product. Adding him to work behind Aaron Rodgers would make a lot of sense. However, he's set to be a top-12 pick in the draft and the Packers are picking at No.30 overall. There's little chance Love makes it that far in the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story

Saints | Jordan Love has video meeting with New Orleans
Utah State QB Jordan Love conducted a predraft video meeting with the New Orleans Saints, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Love is set to be a top-12 pick in the 2020 NFL draft. If the Saints wanted him to be the heir apparent to Drew Brees, they'd have to move up quite a bit. They currently have the No.24 pick in the first round.

Broncos | Nick Vannett deal becomes official
Denver Broncos TE Nick Vannett was officially signed to a two-year contract Thursday, April 2. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: Vannett is mostly a blocking tight end, but he can do more as a receiver if called upon. He'll serve as a reserve player behind Broncos starting tight end, and primary receiving tight end, Noah Fant.

NFL | Tua Tagovailoa gets positive medical reevaluation
Updating previous reports, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) participated in a voluntary physical examination Thursday, April 2, according to his agency. NFL Scouting Combine officials facilitated the medical reevaluation with an independent doctor selected by NFL team physicians. All 32 teams' doctors and trainers were able to provide input on which medical checks they wanted to see performed, and Tagovailoa's representation said the results were 'overwhelmingly positive.'
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa injured his hip last year in November and has worked hard to get back to this point. He should be a top-5 pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Teams are going to have to take a chance on his talent while also realizing he has an injury history...not only this hip, but some ankle problems in his past too.

Buccaneers | Blaine Gabbert to back up Tom Brady
Unrestricted free-agent QB Blaine Gabbert (Buccaneers) is re-signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a one-year deal, a source said Thursday, April 2. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Gabbert missed most of the 2019 season with a dislocated shoulder. He'll serve as the backup to Brady but that's a big difference in talent if Gabbert is thrust into the starting role.
    Link to story

Titans | Derrick Henry signs franchise tender
Updating previous reports, Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry signed his franchise tender Thursday, April 2. Henry and the Titans remain committed to reaching a long-term agreement before the July 15 deadline.
Footballguys view: Henry is now guaranteed a one-year price of $10.2 million. The two sides should get a long-term deal done before the deadline to do so in the summer. Henry is going to be the bellcow for the Titans as a runner and we think he could get more work as a receiver too in 2020. He is no doubt a RB1 for Fantasy GMs.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson a workhorse?
Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson averaged 20.3 touches and 87.5 yards from scrimmage over the first four games in 2019.
Footballguys view: He'd be a workhorse if he could maintain that level of workload over a full 16-game season. In two seasons with the Lions, Johnson has only played in 18 games. Last year, Johnson only appeared in eight games and ran for a paltry 3.6 yards per carry. It's a make-or-break season for Johnson in 2020.

    Kerryon Johnson player page

Saints | Drew Brees finished strong in 2019
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw an NFL-high 15 touchdowns over the final four games of 2019, tossing at least three touchdowns in every game.
Footballguys view: Brees missed time last year with an injury but came back strong. He's back for one more season and has not shown many signs of slowing down at all. The Saints added WR Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, giving yet another weapon to Brees and the passing attack.
    Link to story
    Drew Brees player page

Bills | Josh Allen making progress?
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen raised his completion percentage by six points in his second season and doubled his number of touchdown passes to 20 while throwing three fewer interceptions.
Footballguys view: Allen is making progress and still has work to do. His arm is one of the strongest in the league, but he needs better deep-ball accuracy. The team went out and made a huge trade for WR Stefon Diggs, and he should become Allen's favorite target in 2020. Just having a player like Diggs in the mix will help Allen post better numbers in his third pro season.

Buccaneers | Scott Miller eyeing No. 3 role
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Scott Miller said he has been focusing on adding weight and making sure his hamstring is healthy this offseason in order to win the No. 3 receiver spot. 'Hopefully I can get that spot, play as much as I can, make as many plays as I can and help us win as much as we can,' Miller said.
Footballguys view: Miller can have his eye on the No.3 role for now, but the Buccaneers may be adding a wide receiver or two in the 2020 NFL draft. A sixth-round pick out of Bowling Green in 2019, Miller appeared in nine games and had 13 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown as a rookie. He'll be competing for the spot behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in camp.
    Link to story
    Scott Miller player page

Browns | David Njoku expected to stay
Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku is expected to remain with the team despite the signing of TE Austin Hooper, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter.
Footballguys view: Hooper is making the big money and should be the starter for the Browns. Njoku has a ton of talent and upside as a player, but he's never put it all together and played up to his full potential in the NFL. He may need a fresh start with another team to do just that.
    Link to story
    David Njoku player page

Steelers | Eric Ebron not fully healthy
Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron (ankle) said he has not fully recovered from his ankle surgery yet and could not play if the season started today.
Footballguys view: The Steelers had to feel good about Ebron's recovery to sign him in free agency. He'll be competing with Vance McDonald to be the lead tight end for the Steelers in 2020.
    Link to story
    Eric Ebron player page

Bears | Trey Burton should be ready for camp
Chicago Bears TE Trey Burton (hip) is on track in his rehab and should be ready for training camp, according to general manager Ryan Pace.
Footballguys view: Burton only appeared in eight games last year and was a huge disappointment. The No.6 tight end (standard-scoring leagues) in 2018, Burton's numbers fell off the map and he finished at No.83 in 2019. We'll see if he can stay healthy and get his career back on track with the Bears.
    Link to story
    Trey Burton player page

Bears | Anthony Miller making progress

Chicago Bears WR Anthony Miller (shoulder) is on track in his rehab and should be ready for training camp, according to general manager Ryan Pace.
Footballguys view: Miller had more catches and more yards as a sophomore in 2019, but his fantasy numbers took a step back. The main reason was his touchdowns going from 7 in 2018 to just 2 in 2019. We'll see if Miller can flourish in 2020 with whatever quarterback (Nick Foles, Mitchell Trubisky) is going to win the starting job.
    Link to story
    Anthony Miller player page

Bears | Mitchell Trubisky on track for camp
Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder) is on track in his rehab and should be ready for training camp, according to general manage Ryan Pace.
Footballguys view: Trubisky is going to have competition for the starting job in camp. The Bears made a move to add Nick Foles, and he will push Trubisky to be at the top of the depth chart.
    Link to story
    Mitchell Trubisky player page

Chiefs | Ricky Seals-Jones joining Chiefs
Free-agent TE Ricky Seals-Jones (Browns) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, April 3, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Seals-Jones is an athletic tight end who can work behind Travis Kelce. We like him in dynasty formats and we'll be interested to see how he looks with this high-powered offense...even with a limited role.
    Link to story
    Ricky Seals-Jones player page

Buccaneers | Blaine Gabbert deal gets league approval
Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Blaine Gabbert's contract was finalized Friday, April 3, by the NFL. Official terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Gabbert stays with the Bucs to be the backup to Tom Brady. The team is going downhill if Brady gets injured since Gabbert isn't effective when given a starting job.
    Link to story
    Blaine Gabbert player page

49ers | Travis Benjamin deal is done
Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Travis Benjamin's contract was approved Friday, April 3, by the NFL. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Benjamin joins a thin WR corps with the 49ers. He could do more than some think, especially with his speed but expect the 49ers to select a wide receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story
    Travis Benjamin player page

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham, N'Keal Harry have plan
New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham and WR N'Keal Harry are planning to meet to go over the offense and work out if OTAs are cancelled this spring by the coronavirus.
Footballguys view: Stidham is the top quarterback on the roster for now. We'll see if the Patriots make a move for a quarterback like Cam Newton to improve the depth chart.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster among YAC leaders
Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster ranked third in the NFL, and second among wide receivers, in 2019 with his average of 5.9 yards per contact per reception.
Footballguys view: That's a given with Smith-Schuster's skill set. He should be a YAC beast once again this season. Hopefully the Steelers passing game has a bounce-back year with a healthy QB Ben Roethlisberger under center.
    Link to story
    JuJu Smith-Schuster player page

Panthers | QB signing lured Robby Anderson
Carolina Panthers WR Robby Anderson said Friday, April 3, that the Panthers' signing of QB Teddy Bridgewater, a close friend, was the 'icing on the cake' that convinced him to sign with Carolina.
Footballguys view: Anderson also worked under new Panthers head coach Matt Rhule when he was in college at Temple. He'll be the No.1 receiver for the Panthers and has the speed to take the top off the defense.
    Link to story
    Robby Anderson player page

49ers | George Kittle tops in YAC per reception
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle leads all players with an average of 8.6 yards after catch per reception over the last two seasons.
Footballguys view: Kittle is a load to bring down when he's got the rock. The 49ers should add a receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, but Kittle is their most important target in the passing game.
    Link to story
    George Kittle player page

Jets | Breshad Perriman seeks to stay hot
New York Jets WR WR Breshad Perriman said Friday, April 3, he plans on picking up where he left off a season ago during his strong finish with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 'That was just a tiny glimpse and I'm looking forward to building on that run from last season,' Perriman said.
Footballguys view: Perriman finally stayed healthy and produced last year with the Bucs when Mike Evans and Chris Godwin were banged up. We'll see if he can carry that momentum over to the Jets in 2020.
    Link to story
    Breshad Perriman player page

Broncos | Drew Lock readying for new offense
Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock is throwing five days a week at a spot near his parents' home in Kansas City, during the coronavirus shutdown and has been studying the team's new offensive playbook while watching recent New York Giants film with new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur coming aboard.
Footballguys view: Lock should work well in Shurmur's three-vert system. The offense is going to be more aggressive in 2020, and that's good news for Lock and his top target WR Courtland Sutton.
    Link to story
    Drew Lock player page

Bears | Open competition for Chicago's starting QB gig
Chicago Bears QBs Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles will participate in an open competition for the 2020 starting quarterback job, according to general manager Ryan Pace.
Footballguys view: Trubisky has failed to play up to expectations, so the Bears made a move to add competition. We'll see if Foles can win the job in training camp. Either way, Trubisky is on his last leg with the Bears.
    Link to story
    Nick Foles player page

Chiefs | Sammy Watkins returning to Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (Chiefs) restructured his contract Friday, April 3, which was a one-year deal worth $9 million and could reach $16 million with incentives. The move creates $5 million in salary cap space.
Footballguys view: The Chiefs needed that cap space in a bad way. Before this, they only had $177 in cap space. Now, they'll be closer to being able to sign a draft class (around $10 million). Watkins played in 14 regular season games last year, compiling 52 catches for 673 yards and three touchdowns. That was good for WR5 production in standard-scoring leagues. However, in the postseason he was money - catching 14 passes for 288 yards and one touchdown in three games. We'll see if he can carry that momentum over to the 2020 regular season.
