NFL Player News - Week of 3/23/20

Broncos | Jeff Heuerman on the way out?
Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman's roster spot could be in jeopardy following the addition of TE Nick Vannett, according to Troy Renck of Denver7.

Falcons | Laquon Treadwell headed to Atlanta
Free-agent WR Laquon Treadwell (Vikings) has agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, March 22, according to a league source.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer contract update
Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New England Patriots Sunday, March 22, worth $2 million.
Footballguys view: Hoyer will be a backup for the Patriots once again. This is his third stint with the team and if he sees the field the team won't go in the tank.

Panthers | Pharoh Cooper contract update
Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Pharoh Cooper (Cardinals) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers worth $1.21 million.
Footballguys view: Cooper is mostly a return man but he did get the most targets and catches of his career last season with the Cardinals. Working as a backup, Cooper caught 25 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown. Cooper will be a No.4 receiver for the Panthers in 2020.

Cardinals | Brett Hundley agrees to terms
Free-agent QB Brett Hundley (Cardinals) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, March 22. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Hundley is staying with the team to give them veteran depth behind Kyler Murray. He once had intriguing dynasty potential (in super deep leagues) but those days are behind him. We'll see if the Cardinals add another quarterback to compete with Hundley for the backup job in the 2020 NFL draft.

Patriots | NE reportedly not interested in Andy Dalton
The New England Patriots have not discussed trading for Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton as a potential successor to QB Tom Brady.
Footballguys view: Dalton would be an interesting option for the Patriots because of his experience and accuracy on short-to-intermediate routes. It doesn't sound like that's going to happen, so we'll see who the Patriots end up with. Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer are currently the quarterbacks on the roster.

    Bengals | Mike Thomas signed
The Cincinnati Bengals signed free-agent WR Mike Thomas (Rams) to a one-year deal Friday, March 20.
Footballguys view: Thomas only played 34 snaps on offense in 2019 over nine games for the Rams. He'll work as a reserve receiver and special teams player/return man for the Bengals where he's reunited with Zac Taylor.

Have to think they will add someone else to that group unless they think Stidham is the next Brady.

NFL | Tua Tagovailoa attacking rehab
University of Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) posted a series of videos to his social media accounts Monday, March 23, and appears to be making good progress just about 4 1/2 months after suffering a season-ending hip injury on Nov. 9. Both NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah and Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy expressed how impressed they were with his movement skills after watching the videos.

Giants | Dion Lewis set to join Giants
Free-agent RB Dion Lewis (Titans) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New York Giants Monday, March 23, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Lewis gets to work as a reserve running back behind Saquon Barkley. He's got the ability to work well as a change-of-pace option and pass-catcher out of the backfield. Fantasy GMs should keep Lewis on the waiver wire speed dial.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski let go
New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski was released Monday, March 23, according to a source.

Giants | Corey Coleman returning to NYG
Free-agent WR Corey Coleman (Giants) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New York Giants Monday, March 23, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Coleman suffered a torn ACL last July with the Giants and missed the entire 2019 season. He's staying with the team and Fantasy GMs need to know that he was working as a No.3 receiver at points during OTAs and minicamp last year. We'll see if Coleman can stay healthy and earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

    Panthers | Kyle Allen traded
Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen was traded to the Washington Redskins Monday, March 23, in exchange for a fifth-round draft choice, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Panthers are moving forward with Teddy Bridgewater as their starter in 2020. They also signed P.J. Walker from the XFL on Monday, so moving on from Allen was a no-brainer move.
    Link to story

Redskins | Washington acquires Kyle Allen
Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen was acquired by the Washington Redskins Monday, March 23, in exchange for a fifth-round draft choice, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Washington is looking to develop Dwayne Haskins as their starter. Allen started 12 games last year and has the experience to serve as a backup to Haskins in 2020.

Redskins | Washington not looking at available QBs
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) are not expected to receive interest from the Washington Redskins this offseason, according to sources.

Panthers | P.J. Walker agrees to terms
Former XFL QB P.J. Walker agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 23, according to sources. The deal includes a $150,000 signing bonus, but the other financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Walker played under new Panthers coach Matt Rhule during his college days at Temple. He did a good job in the XFL this season, leading the league in yards (1,338) and touchdowns (15). Walker will serve as the backup to Teddy Bridgewater in 2020.

Falcons | Matt Ryan reworks contract
Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has agreed to restructure his contract, which will create salary cap space for the team.
Footballguys view: They had to make room in the salary cap after signing RB Todd Gurley and LB Dante Fowler in free agency. No details yet on just how Ryan reworked his deal to help out the team.

    CBS article :
Cam Newton to be released: Four most logical landing spots for longtime Panthers quarterback

Carolina is moving on from Newton, so who could pick up the former MVP?

Here are four of the most logical landing spots:
    4. Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders have committed to Derek Carr more times than we like to admit, and they're also just a week removed from adding Marcus Mariota, who could conceivably push Carr to the bench by Week 1. Still, Vegas isn't hurting for salary cap space after a spending spree on defense, and if, somehow, they're able to find a taker for Carr, are we really sure Jon Gruden wouldn't convince Mike Mayock to take another swing at a high-upside veteran with an arm unlike either that of Carr or Mariota? On a low-risk, prove-it deal, Newton would be a potential instant hit during the Raiders' relocation.

    3. Los Angeles Chargers

Newton isn't necessarily the ideal QB for Anthony Lynn, whose adoration for Tyrod Taylor and previously reported interest in Tom Brady suggests he'd rather have someone who can manage an offense and take care of the football rather than rocket-arm the ball all over the field. But let's not pretend he wouldn't be intrigued by Newton's dual-threat abilities. Adding No. 1 to an L.A. offense already stocked with good weapons (Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry) would instantly boost the Chargers' playoff chances. Getting him on a team-friendly deal also wouldn't preclude L.A. from drafting a long-term replacement.
    2. Buffalo Bills

The Washington Redskins made all the sense in the world, what with Ron Rivera's connection to Newton, other links between Washington's staff and Cam's old Panthers crew, not to mention Dan Snyder's penchant for pursuing veteran arms rather than staying the course with younger prospects. But then Rivera went out and chose Newton's 2019 fill-in, Kyle Allen, instead, landing the ex-Carolina backup via trade. The Bills fill their spot here. As CBS Sports editor and resident Bills expert R.J. White points out, Buffalo has the cap space to carry a pricey No. 2, Allen's playing style all but begs for an upgrade there, and Bills leadership is very familiar with Newton considering both coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane worked alongside the veteran in Carolina.
    1. New England Patriots

Stylistically, Brady and Newton could not be more different. But that's kind of what makes this appealing, no? If Bill Belichick is going to go into the season without No. 12 under center for the first time in two decades, who's to say he wouldn't embrace a more contemporary option -- as in someone still capable of damaging opponents with both their arm and legs? Newton's health is obviously a concern, but he'd open up all kinds of possibilities for a spread-out offense. He'd benefit from New England's ever-rotating stable of running backs. And he wouldn't preclude the Pats from still drafting a longer-term successor or later turning to Jarrett Stidham.

I do not see the Pats paying big bucks for a QB, which would take both Newton and Winston out of the equation.

Why would Chargers be bad? They have excellent skill players at three offensive positions in Ekeler, Allen and Henry, if they can upgrade their offensive line, they could be a dangerous team with competent QB play. And they have the space to take a chance on Newton or Winston, which could allow them to focus on the O-Line in the Draft.

Also, Rivers was all they had? He was terrible last year, through no fault of his own but he lack the mobility to play behind the porous O-Line they had.

Thirdly they are probably NOT content to rebuild moving into a new stadium.

    Wednesday Update

Lions | Marvin Jones ridiculously efficient in 2019
Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones hauled in 10 receptions and scored eight times on 14 red zone targets last season. He also tallied six catches and scored five times on his nine targets inside the 10.
Footballguys view: Jones should be even better this year with a full return of QB Matthew Stafford. The Lions passing game as a whole should see a bump in production so long as Stafford can stay healthy.
    Link to story
    Marvin Jones Jr player page

Saints | Alvin Kamara saw huge dip in red zone usage
New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara was targeted only 11 times (seven receptions) and did not score a touchdown with those opportunities in 2019 after registering 20 catches and scoring three times on his 25 red zone targets in 2018.
Footballguys view: Kamara was banged up last year and that caused a dip in production. Now fully healthy, Kamara should be back to his old ways ...especially in the red zone.
    Link to story
    Alvin Kamara player page

Buccaneers | Mike Evans nearly unstoppable in close
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans managed to catch only four of his 10 targets inside the 10 last season, but he was able to score on each of them.
Footballguys view: Tom Brady's favorite target near pay dirt should be Evans in 2020. The Buccaneers are going to continue to feed Evans so he'll get his 1,000 yards receiving and be one of the most fantasy relevant WRs in 2020.
    Link to story
    Mike Evans player page

Rams | Cooper Kupp very efficient near goal line
Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp finished in a tie for fifth in the league with 10 targets inside the 10 last season, but he finished with a league-best eight receptions and scored six touchdowns - tied for best in the NFL - with those opportunities.
Footballguys view: Kupp is quick on underneath routes and he knows how to find his way in tight spaces. He should continue to be a big target in the red zone this season.
    Link to story
    Cooper Kupp player page

Lions | Kenny Golladay busy near end zone in 2019
Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay paced the NFL with 13 targets inside the 10 last season, while his seven catches inside the 10 was tied for second in the league and his six scores inside the same area was tied for first.
Footballguys view: Golladay was able to put up some great numbers last year even though the Lions went through three quarterbacks (Matthew Stafford, Jeff Driskel, David Blough) in 2019. With Stafford back healthy at quarterback, Golladay and the passing game for the Lions should get a bump.
    Link to story
    Kenny Golladay player page

Seahawks | Tyler Lockett dominant inside red zone
Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett led the league with 23 targets and 17 receptions inside the 20 last season. His seven red zone touchdowns left him in a four-way tie for third in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Lockett finished 2019 as the No.16 fantasy receiver in standard-scoring leagues. He's got the ability to be a top-12 receiver each year, and higher in PPR leagues, due to his role in the Seattle offense and connection with QB Russell Wilson.
    Link to story
    Tyler Lockett player page

Eagles | Carson Wentz flawless in close in 2019
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz threw for 19 touchdowns versus no interceptions inside the 20 in 2019, making him only one of five regular starting quarterbacks to pass for more than 12 scores and avoid an interception in the red zone last season. He also posted a 15:0 TD-to-INT ratio inside the 10.
Footballguys view: Wentz needs to stay healthy and make the most of the weapons around him. The Eagles are set to be an exciting offense in 2020 with Wentz leading the way.
    Link to story
    Carson Wentz player page

Titans | Derrick Henry finishes with a flurry again
Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry ran for 896 yards and 10 touchdowns from Week 10 to Week 17 last season, becoming the first player in modern history (since 1950) to run for at least 500 yards and 10 TDs over that same time frame multiple times in his career. Henry also rushed for 759 yards and 10 TDs from Week 10 to Week 17 in 2018 as well.
Footballguys view: The Titans need to figure out that Henry needs the rock early in the season too. They were able to make a deep postseason run last year and are hoping for a repeat performance in 2020.
    Link to story
    Derrick Henry player page

NFL | No red zone woes for Jameis Winston in 2019
Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) threw for 19 touchdowns versus only one interception inside the 20 and posted a 15:1 TD-to-INT ratio inside the 10 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.
Footballguys view: Winston didn't have any woes in the red zone because of targets like WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. We'll see where Winston goes and if he has a chance to work with quality receivers like those two.
    Link to story
    Jameis Winston player page

Seahawks | Russell Wilson lethal in close in 2019
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw for 25 touchdowns versus only one interception inside the 20 and posted a 15:0 TD-to-INT ratio inside the 10 last season.
Footballguys view: Wilson is nearly flawless when the team gets near pay dirt. That is going to continue on as Seattle tries to make another Super Bowl run with Wilson leading the charge.
    Link to story
    Russell Wilson player page

Jaguars | Tyler Eifert-Jags deal reached
Updating a previous report, unrestricted free-agent TE Tyler Eifert (Bengals) agreed to a two-year deal Tuesday, March 24, with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: He's a talented tight end when healthy but struggles to stay healthy. Eifert will be reunited with his first NFL offensive coordinator in Jay Gruden, who holds the same position in Jacksonville.
    Link to story
    Tyler Eifert player page

Redskins | Richard Rodgers heads to Washington
Unrestricted free-agent TE Richard Rodgers (Eagles) signed an undisclosed contract Tuesday, March 24, with the Washington Redskins, according to a source.

Broncos | Sam Martin will kick for Denver
Unrestricted free-agent P Sam Martin (Lions) agreed to a three-year, $7.05 million contract Tuesday, March 24, with the Denver Broncos, according to a source.
    Link to story

Packers | Devin Funchess is set to sign with Green Bay
Unrestricted free-agent WR Devin Funchess (Colts) is expected to sign an undisclosed contract with the Green Bay Packers, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Funchess only appeared in one game last year for the Colts. It was a collarbone injury that kept him out most of the season. Funchess brings some more size to the Packers WR room but doesn't have much fantasy value.
    Link to story
    Devin Funchess player page

Jets | Breshad Perriman heads to the New York Jets
Unrestricted free-agent WR Breshad Perriman (Buccaneers) is signing a one-year worth up to $8 million Tuesday, March 24, with the New York Jets, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Of the $8 million, $6 million will be guaranteed.
Footballguys view: The Jets were not able to keep Robby Anderson as he signed with the Panthers, so they needed a speed receiver. Perriman is still fast and he was productive last year for the Buccaneers, finally playing up to his first-round potential. He has struggled with injuries as a pro but was able to stay healthy and produce in 2019. We'll see if he can build on that success in 2020 with the Jets.
    Link to story
    Breshad Perriman player page

Ravens | Chris Moore sticks around in Baltimore
Free-agent WR Chris Moore (Ravens) re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens on an undisclosed contract Tuesday, March 24, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Moore is fast and can track the ball down the field. He is most likely going to contribute on special teams more than he does on offense with the Ravens in 2020.
    Link to story
    Chris Moore player page

Patriots | New England not interested in Cam Newton?
The New England Patriots don't have 'any immediate interest' in free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers), according to a source Tuesday, March 24.

Panthers | Robby Anderson signing with Carolina
Free-agent WR Robby Anderson (Jets) is signing a two-year deal worth $20 million with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 24, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Panthers add more speed to the WR position with this move. Anderson was on the open market a bit longer than we thought he would be. We'll see how he meshes with new Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater. Anderson will earn $12 million in the first year of the deal.

Panthers | Cam Newton officially released
Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was released Tuesday, March 24, costing the team only $2 million in dead money agianst the 2020 salary cap.
Footballguys view: Newton was the No.1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft and led the Panthers to one Super Bowl appearance (Super Bowl 50) where they fell short of a world championship. He has not been the same player over the last two years as he's battled foot and shoulder injuries. If healthy, Newton can still be a quality starter in the NFL.

Redskins | Peyton Barber heads to Washington
Free-agent RB Peyton Barber (Buccaneers) signed a two-year deal worth $3 million with the Washington Redskins Tuesday, March 24. Barber receives $600,000 in guaranteed money.
Footballguys view: Barber is a jack-of-all trades running back who will work behind Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice in Washington. He does not have much juice when he does touch the rock and is not much of a fantasy option.

49ers | Travis Benjamin joins San Francisco
Free-agent WR Travis Benjamin (Chargers) will sign a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source Tuesday, March 24. Financial terms were undisclosed.
Footballguys view: The 49ers lost Emmanuel Sanders (Saints) in free agency and needed help at the position. Benjamin has good speed and plenty of experience in the pros. We'll see how he works his way onto the depth chart with his new team.

Seahawks | Phillip Dorsett heading to Seattle
Free-agent WR Phillip Dorsett (Patriots) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks Tuesday, March 24. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: Dorsett was one of the speed receivers available in free agency. The Seahawks have size in DK Metcalf and quickness in Tyler Lockett. Dorsett will work his way onto the depth chart behind those two.

Also, Rivers was all they had? He was terrible last year, through no fault of his own but he lack the mobility to play behind the porous O-Line they had.

Thirdly they are probably NOT content to rebuild moving into a new stadium.
They already have upgraded the oline with Trai Turner and Bulaga.

He is done, through no fault of his own, arthritic knee. Considering that, he actually OVERperformed last year.

    Friday Update

Bears | First downs rare for Tarik Cohen in 2019
Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen picked up a first down on only 18 of his 79 catches in 2019. The resulting 22.8-percent first-down rate was the lowest in the league among all players with at least 50 receptions.

Bills | Stefon Diggs turning into a big-play machine
Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs managed 63 catches - the second-lowest mark of his career - and was charged with a drop on 6.4 percent of his 94 targets - a dramatic increase from two percent in 2018 - but he still finished with a career-high 1,130 receiving yards in 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings due in part to averaging 13.1 yards before the catch per reception. That figure was more than double his 5.6 yards before the catch per reception the previous season.

Chargers | Austin Ekeler wildly efficient in 2019
Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler hauled in 92 of his 108 targets last season. The resulting 85.2-percent catch rate led the league among all players with at least 50 receptions.

NFL | Mike Evans, DeVante Parker moved the chains
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans picked up a first down on 54 of his 67 catches in 2019, while Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker did so on 58 of his 72 receptions. The resulting 80.6 percent first-down rate for both players led the league among players with at least 50 receptions.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce in rare company
Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce recorded 1,229 receiving yards in 2019, becoming only the fifth tight end in NFL history to top 1,000 yards four times in his career. However, he is the only one ever to do so in four consecutive seasons.

Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) won't be signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to head coach Bruce Arians Thursday, March 26. 'There's no room and probably not enough money,' Arians said. 'It's just not going to happen here. It's not a fit here.'

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake officially signs tender
Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake officially signed his transition tag tender Thursday, March 26, according to sources.
Footballguys view: His transition tag means that Drake will make around $8.4 million in 2020. He's the lead back for the Cardinals and looked like a great fit last year after he was added via trade from the Dolphins. Drake is a RB1 for Fantasy GMs and should be a big piece of what the Cardinals do on offense in 2020.

    Panthers | Seth Roberts terms
Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers WR Seth Roberts received a one-year, $3.75 million deal.
Footballguys view: Roberts is an interesting add by the Panthers, especially after they already got Robby Anderson earlier in free agency. He's a speed guy, like Anderson, but Roberts is going to be working for a spot on the end of the depth chart.
