NFL Player News - Week of 6/24/19

NE - RB Sony Michel running at full speed

Source: NFL Network - Michael Giardi

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) has been running at 'full tilt' after recovering from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, according to multiple sources. He was unable to participate in the team's minicamp last month but should be ready for the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michel had fluid drained from his knee last year during camp, missed time during the season, and still made a consistent and sizable fantasy impact on the strength of the Patriots running game and game scripts. This year third round pick Damien Harris could take away touches if not overtake Michel as the finisher of drives and games, so Michel must stay healthy during camp.

PIT - RB James Conner thrived on big plays

    Source: Pro Football Focus

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner gained 340 of his 972 rushing yards on runs of 15 yards or longer last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Conner definitely benefited from an offense that kept defenses off balance behind a great offensive line and dangerous downfield passing game. Antonio Brown's loss is a negative, but overall the situation is still a positive. He isn't a speedy back, so the longer gains may be limited this year with defenses able to contract unless James Washington, Donte Moncrief, or third-round pick Diontae Johnson present a credible downfield threat opposite Juju Smith-Schuster.

DET - Big year for RB Kerryon Johnson?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is 'easily' going to top 1,000 rushing yards this season if he stays healthy, in the opinion
of Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson was getting on track before he got hurt and this offense should feed him all he can handle. Theo Riddick could get released before the season and boost Johnson's value even higher. He's looking like a good third-round target.

TB - Tampa Bay remains high on RB Peyton Barber

Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber is still held in high regard by the team, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic. Auman adds the 25-year-old was the first rusher in the last five years to rack up 250-plus touches but fail to compile 1,000 yards from scrimmage in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barber could end up being cheap bye/injury depth if he holds off Ronald Jones after a strong spring from Jones. He has a low ceiling, but Barber might gain value in the same role as 2018 if Bruce Arians improves the offense.

SF - Jeffery Wilson on the bubble

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Jeffery Wilson faces an 'uphill climb' to make the 53-man roster, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson has a chance to maker the roster if one of the top four backs isn't healthy enough to contribute early in the season, and three of them couldn't practice in the spring. Even if he's released, he could end up back on the roster by season's end.

LAC - RB Justin Jackson seizing opportunity

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson has benefited from extra reps in OTAs as a result of RB Melvin Gordon's absence, according to head coach Anthony Lynn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson was impressive for a seventh-round pick. He could have as much value as Austin Ekeler or more if Melvin Gordon misses time again this year. He'll be an immediate pickup if either Ekeler or Gordon miss time.

Chargers have some solid depth at RB along with various other positions. GM, Tom Telesco, has done a nice job putting together the roster.

    Tuesday Update

SF - RB Tevin Coleman considered lead back

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is considered the odds-on favorite to be the closest thing to a lead back, beat writer Matt Maiocco suggests, especially since he has a history in head coach Kyle Shanahan's system.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman deserves a pick in the mid rounds because he could have the job Week 1 and then hold it as long as he performs. His redraft value is going to surge over the summer unless he gets hurt.

    SEA - D.K. Metcalf a quick study

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf has impressed QB Russell Wilson with his football knowledge so far as a rookie.'Everybody knows about his ability to run and everything else, and jump and catch and all that. You guys have been talking about that for months, but I think more than anything else, it's his brain and how he processes information and how quickly he understands it. He's really intelligent. He really understands the game really well. He takes coaching really well. He gets extra work. He's a legit pro wide receiver. He's everything that everybody was talking about in terms of what he's capable of and more.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Metcalf's targets will be limited in a low volume passing game, but he could still be more than relevant because they will be mostly well-thrown, well thought out downfield targets from Russell Wilson. If he's a starter at the end of camp, he'll be worth a bench spot in redraft leagues.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper wants to stay in Dallas

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper told reporters Monday, June 24, he isn't thinking about his expiring contract but stated,' I do want to be a Dallas Cowboy for a long time.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper is going to get 20 million a year whether the Cowboys give it to him or not. After he helped turn around their season last year, it would make sense to commit to him before the market sets his price even higher, but the Cowboys have other ideas for the player they gave up a first-round pick to add last year.

IND - HC encouraged by play of WR Devin Funchess

Source: 1070 The Fan - Kevin Bowen

Indianapolis Colts WR Devin Funchess produced mixed results during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, according to beat writer Kevin Bowen, although head coach Frank Reich said he was 'very encouraged' by what he saw during spring practices. 'We knew right away, you could tell day one that he was smart. (He was) not going to have a problem grasping the system,' Reich said. 'Then it's just a question of getting used to the way we do things, the way we teach things and then our schemes. I just thought he showed a very high aptitude for that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We need to see Funchess' chemistry with Andrew Luck before getting a real grasp on his fantasy value this year. He's got a chance to be as high as the #2 target in the passing game or as long as #5 or #6. Funchess is worth a speculative second half of your draft pick in the meantime.

SF - RB Jerick McKinnon expects to receive clearance

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is expected to receive clearance near the start of training camp, as he makes his way back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnon is due 3.7 million this year, which is probably low enough to keep him on the roster as long as he is good to go for Week 1, but if he is outplayed by Matt Breida in camp, he could be inactive on game days without an injury to another back. His redraft value is dropping.

LAC - TE Hunter Henry impressing in spring

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry has been making impressive catches during spring practices, according to head coach Anthony Lynn. 'Hunter is just doing what Hunter Henry does,' Lynn said. 'He makes plays.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry has not yet established himself as a fantasy TE1, but he is being drafted as one. If Antonio Gates doesn't come back again, Henry could deliver on his mid-round ADP, but he is riskier than his price indicates.

LAC - RB Austin Ekeler working on routes

    Source: Chargers.com - Hayley Elwood

Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler said he has focused on improving his route running during the offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ekeler will remain a part of the weekly offense to have bye/injury start value in PPR leagues, but if Melvin Gordon misses time again, Justin Jackson could get as much or more work than Ekeler, so his redraft ceiling is capped.

PHI - Odds against RB Josh Adams making final roster?

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Josh Adams could very well be on the outside looking in when final cuts are announced given his overall lack of versatility, in the opinion of NBC Sports Philadelphia's Reuben Frank.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adams is a between the tackles pounder, but his lack of other uses will make it hard for him to make the team. He has a future in the NFL and looked like he belonged last year, so if he can't make the cut, we shouldn't forget about him wherever he ends up landing. The addition of Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders probably cost him his spot.

TEN - Taming QB Marcus Mariota is key

    Source: MMQB - Albert Breer

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has been encouraged to take fewer hits by general manager Jon Robinson. 'The thing I've stressed to him, and I know our coaches have stressed to him is, Let's live to play another play,' Robinson said. 'Don't take that hit. If you feel the pocket coming down on you and you take off running, and the 'backer is coming off of coverage and he's coming screaming at you, throw the ball away. It's OK to punt, we'll get another crack at it. That's the main thing, it's stressing to him - to try as best as possible, like all quarterbacks do, to avoid getting hit.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota has been held back by injuries, coaching changes, and his play. If he takes fewer hits that will help one of those factors. It's still hard to see him as a quarterback who helps his teammates overachieve in fantasy leagues. He's an afterthought in fantasy drafts after it looked like he had broken out in 2017.

SF - RB Matt Breida faces stiff competition

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida will be in a crowded backfield heading into 2019 as long as everyone is healthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Breida was productive and a good fit in Kyle Shanahan's offense last year, but he can't seem to stay on the field, with a torn pec his latest malady. He'll be frustrating to roster unless Tevin Coleman gets hurt.

SF - RB Raheem Mostert has leg up for spot

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert is expected to be one of three running backs active during the regular season since he is the team's best special-teams player.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mostert performed as well as any 49ers back last year, but went down with a broken forearm that sidelined him over the spring. He will be a waiver wire speed dial name if injuries thin the ranks at running back for San Francisco.

TB - Ronald Jones trying to prove himself

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Eduardo A. Encina

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones said he is focused on putting last year behind him and earning his opportunities going forward. Jones also said that he has spent more time watching the veteran backs to learn how to be a pro and has simplified how he catches passes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is still technically behind Peyton Barber on the depth chart, but he is arguably as likely to generate fantasy relevance as Barber, and could overtake him, even before Week 1. He's the Bucs running back to target when you're making your bench picks.

ARI - RB Chase Edmonds not forgotten

Source: The Arizona Republic - Katherine Fitzgerald

Arizona Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds will have a 'really nice role in the offense' this season, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edmonds probably won't have fantasy relevance without a David Johnson injury, but he is a clear handcuff and his passing game skills could give him emergency play value in PPR leagues if Kingsbury uses him more than his predecessor. At the very least Edmonds will be a player we strongly recommend picking up after the bye weeks, but he could play well enough to be claimed in all the leagues he went undrafted in before that happens.

NO - Taysom Hill working on receiver skills

Source: FOX 8 NOLA - Sean Fazende

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill said he feels more comfortable with the responsibilities of being a wide receiver this season. 'I think it will be even easier because there was definitely a learning curve from a fundamental standpoint of getting out of breaks and routes and blocking all that I feel more comfortable doing that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill is continuing to crosstrain and giving the Saints more looks with his multi-position abilities. He'll likely get enough red zone snaps to ding Drew Brees ceiling again this year.

JAX - Josh Oliver fitting in

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Josh Oliver said he feels comfortable in the offense, and he has shown a 'good rapport' with QB Nick Foles, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Oliver has a high bar to fantasy relevance as a rookie tight end, but he will be helped by Foles starting from square one with all of his receivers except Chris Conley. He'll be on our waiver wire watchlist if he can win the majority of passing down snaps and tight end targets.

BAL - TE Hayden Hurst over hamstring issue

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens TE Hayden Hurst (hamstring) was able to participate in minicamp after dealing with a hamstring injury during OTAs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurst has had trouble staying healthy, so it wasn't encouraging to see him on the injury report this spring. That he returned is redeeming, but we'll be watching his health closely this summer. Mark Andrews is still the tight end to own in this offense.

    Wednesday Update

WAS - Joe Theismann warns against Dwayne Haskins starting Week 1

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Washington Redskins rookie QB Dwayne Haskins shouldn't be under center for the team early in the season, according to former QB Joe Theismann. Washington will open the 2019 campaign against the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Chicago Bears. 'To put him out there early against those teams, it's just a formula for disaster for the team, for (head coach) Jay (Gruden), for the fans and everybody else,' Theismann said. 'I think the young man is our future, and let's protect the future, instead of throwing it out there right now and saying, 'Okay, go get 'em.' The schedule we're playing is not a 'go get 'em' schedule.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Theismann has a point about Haskins getting off on the wrong foot if he is overmatched in early games. Trent Williams status is also a big question mark after he stayed away from OTAs, and if he isn't playing it would almost be unfair to Haskins to put him out there. Either way, this will be one of the most anemic offenses in the league in early going, and probably for the whole season.

MIN - Breakout season ahead for RB Dalvin Cook?

Source: NFL Network - Terrell Davis

Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook is a strong candidate to have a 2019 breakout season, in the opinion of NFL Network analyst Terrell Davis. Knowing (new Vikings offensive coordinator Gary) Kubiak's history, Cook should get a lot of opportunities this season, far more than the 133 carries he had in 2018,' David wrote on NFL.com 'The third-year pro has the natural ability to be a top-10 running back, and we've seen glimpses of his talent in the last two seasons. Unfortunately, injuries (ACL in 2017; hamstring in 2018) have prevented him from staying on the field for a full season. With a healthy offseason and more than a year removed from his knee injury, Cook will be a major player in the Vikings' offense in 2019.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook is a good fit in the system and has always popped off of the screen when healthy. This year will affect our value of him in dynasty leagues greatly. One more injury marred year and he'll tainted for at least 1-2 more years, but with a full productive season, he could become a highly coveted dynasty asset.

DAL - No deal soon for RB Ezekiel Elliott

    Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is unlikely to get an extension in 2019 or next offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Dan Graziano. Elliott's option for 2020 is worth $9.099 million, and the team feels good about franchise tag numbers on him in 2021.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was the Steelers model for handling Le'Veon Bell along with offering an extension that was palatable to them after tagging him. Elliott's off-field incidents will call for some protection in his eventual long term deal, and that could also be part of the Cowboys' hesitation.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper eyeing top 5

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Jori Epstein

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper says he's not a top-five NFL receiver -- at the moment. 'It's something I think I can prove this year, not sure if I've proved it yet, but I plan on doing it this year,' Cooper told USA Today Sports' Trysta Krick. 'I think I definitely have the mentality and skill set to be a top-five receiver, that's no doubt. But have I proven it? I don't know. I really want to set out and prove it.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Top five is very tough to crack with Odell Beckham, Julio Jones, and DeAndre Hopkins easily taking up three spots, but it's good to set high goals. Cooper should be available as the tenth wide receiver off of the board or later this year, but if he produces the kind of ceiling games he did last year with a higher floor, he could pay dividends.

SF - PK Robbie Gould says family will dictate decisions

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

K Robbie Gould still hasn't signed the franchise tag extended to him by the San Francisco 49ers earlier this offseason. The 36-year-old has requested a trade which the team has refused up to this point. Gould says he's prioritizing time with his family, who remain in Chicago, Ill. 'It's a complicated situation,' Gould said. 'The way I've kind of approached it is, I want to spend time with my family. And I let my agent handle it, and if anything comes up that I have to make a decision or be in the know, he'll call me and let me know. But right now there's nothing to really know, and I'm just enjoying being home and being in Chicago. ... I'm at a point in my career where my family is what's going to dictate the decisions that I make.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gould's family is in Chicago and no team needs a kicker more than the Bears. The problem is that the 49ers might be asking a lot for him in a trade and the Bears will balk at giving up a high pick for a kicker. This seems like a situation with a wide range of outcomes, including retirement for Gould.

WAS - WR Trey Quinn's star about to ascend?

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins WR Trey Quinn landed on the Reserve/Injured list twice in his rookie season, which limited him to only three games last year. Nevertheless, receivers coach Ike Hilliard is one of a growing list of people who considers Quinn to be a breakout candidate for the 2019 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Quinn is going to be a sneaky PPR pick late and he could easily be the #1 target on this team with the instability at outside receiver and tight end.

MIA - WR Jakeem Grant confident he is past injury

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant missed the final six games of the 2018 season with a lower leg injury, but he believes that while the injury 'kind of messed with me mentally' initially, he is now 'over that mental hump.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grant could have a big opportunity in the slot if Albert Wilson isn't ready for the regular season. Of course, his return to full speed is not a given, so there's a lot to monitor here, with a questionable payoff in one of the NFL's weakest offenses.

NO - QB Drew Brees was tops on third downs

    Source: Pro Football Focus

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees paced all quarterbacks in 2018 with a adjusted third-down completion rate of 78.7 percent, according to Pro Football Focus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brees is still highly efficient, but his volume is dropping and Taysom Hill is stealing red zone snaps. He's as cheap as he's been in years.

BAL - Miles Boykin could be big red zone target

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Mike Preston

Baltimore Ravens WR Miles Boykin (hamstring) could become a key target for QB Lamar Jackson on third-down situations and inside the red zone in 2019.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boykin's hamstring is less worrisome than Marquise Brown's foot at this point, but we still want to see him start camp without incident. He'll have a chance to be an early season waiver wire pickup if he's ready earlier than Brown, but isn't worth a redraft pick yet.

BAL - Marquise Brown slowly recovering

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Mike Preston

Baltimore Ravens WR Marquise Brown (foot) continues to slowly recover from a Lisfranc injury. He was able to participate in individual drills during the spring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He might not be as big a factor this year as the Ravens envisioned when they took him in the first round if his foot can't handle a full practice load in a month. Chris Moore is the "incumbent" outside receiver on this roster and could be an early season hit at a microscopic price with the Ravens facing a lot of weak defenses to start the season.

CHI - TE Adam Shaheen sheds weight in offseason

Source: The Athletic - Adam L. Jahns

Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen lost seven pounds during the offseason, did jiu-jitsu and focused on his core strength and flexibility in an effort to try and stay healthy in 2019.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shaheen is cast as the blocking tight end in Matt Nagy's offense, but he has soft hands and he's difficult to defend in the red zone. He won't have fantasy relevance this year without an injury to Trey Burton, but could improve Mitchell Trubisky's red zone efficiency and upgrade the offense when he's on the field.

    Thursday Update

    Not much going on today.

BUF - QB Josh Allen improved says LeSean McCoy

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen has improved, according to RB LeSean McCoy. 'He looks better,' McCoy said. 'I think he looks more confident. I think last year he just played off of talent. Sometimes, when quarterbacks are really talented, you overlook how smart they really are. Josh is smart.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen should be a better quarterback than last year, although that could lead to less running and maybe ding his weekly fantasy ceiling if the improved passing doesn't make up for it. Defenses will adjust to Allen, but he will have better receivers, and hopefully in time a better line. Allen gets the Jets and Giants to open the season, so he's a reasonable streamer to target later in your draft.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper has lofty goal for 2019

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper said he is looking to post 2,000 yards this upcoming season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a bit outlandish, but he could improve greatly after spending a whole offseason building chemistry with Dak Prescott. He's worth a look in the third round of drafts.

DET - WR Marvin Jones unlikely to be moved

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones (knee) is likely to remain with the club through the start of the season, in the opinion of the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett, who writes he 'can't imagine' the Lions trading him at this point. Birkett does add, however, that if the team is struggling come October they could revisit dealing Jones.

Jones complained on social media about head coach Matt Patricia's policy of injured players not being allowed on the sideline, so he might not be on the best terms with the head coach. The possibility of a mid-season trade isn't insignificant after Golden Tate got traded last year, and it probably wouldn't improve his value. In the more immediate term, we want to see him have a good camp after missing the offseason program recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2018.

    Friday Update

OAK - WR Ryan Grant is top slot option

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders WR Ryan Grant appears to be the likeliest option to open the season in the slot, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Scott Bair, but the team really likes rookie WR Hunter Renfrow, and Bair believes he'll be given every chance to earn a role. Beyond starting WRs Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams, Bair lists WR Dwayne Harris, the team's return man, as the only other lock.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The slot could be an oft-targeted stop for short range high percentage passer Derek Carr, but we shouldn't go fishing for value here outside of very deep PPR leagues. It's more likely that the slot usage inhibits the growth of value from Williams or Darren Waller at tight end than it creates standalone value.

ARI - No rookie role for WR Hakeem Butler?

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WRs Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk and Andy Isabella were projected to be the team's top three wideouts by AZcardinals.com Darren Urban, who made no mention of Hakeem Butler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Butler will have to show he "gets" the air raid offense to get playing time. He offers the best combination of size and athleticism, but a feel for getting open is crucial in this scheme. It looks like Isabella is the better redraft option, with Kirk being the best target of the three starters at ADP.

HOU - TE Kahale Warring making strong impression

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans TE Kahale Warring may be considered somewhat raw because of his limited football background as a former water polo, basketball and swimming standout, but the Texans are reportedly excited about him.'He brings a lot. He's very athletic and learning a lot. New to the game of football, but I really like what I see from him so far. He's doing a good job,' tight ends coach Will Lawing told the Houston Chronicle.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Warring has a high ceiling, perhaps even higher than last year's third round pick Jordan Akins. Jordan Thomas is the Texans tight end to play as a streamer or GPP cheap option early in the season, but Warring could come on by the end of the year and should be the preferred hold in dynasty leagues.

WAS - Collaboration to decide starting QB

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Washington Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams recently told NFL Network that there will a organizational collaboration to decide the team's starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2019 season. 'At the end of the day, it's going to be on (coach) Jay (Gruden), myself, probably (team president) Bruce (Allen) and the owner, after what (QB Dwayne Haskins) does during the preseason and see where we are as a team to make that decision,' Williams said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds complicated for what should be a simple decision. If Haskins is ready, he should play, but if he needs seasoning, he should sit. Either way, this is going to be one of the least productive offenses in the league.

HOU - RB Lamar Miller looking fit

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller has maintained his conditioning regimen and healthier diet from the 2018 offseason and is said to look even fitter and leaner this offseason. 'I'm feeling better this offseason,' Miller said. 'I think what I did in the offseason last year helped me be more explosive last year. So, I'm going to try and continue doing what I did last year and just try to help this team win any way possible.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've gone this road with Miller before, and he did have a very strong mid-season tear to help fantasy teams. D'Onta Foreman will get a chance to cut into Miller's workload, but Miller could hold him off for at least the first month or two of the season with good play. His ADP is very reasonable for a starting running back.

GB - Green Bay RBs could see more passes

Source: Packers Wire - Zach Kruse

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is preparing to get the team's running backs more involved in the passing game in 2019. 'Oh, I love it when we can get them the ball in the passing game,' LaFleur said to end minicamp earlier in June. 'That's just one more eligible (receiver) the defense has to focus on. When you talk about getting five guys out into a concept, it just opens up more space inside typically.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Aaron Jones came on as a receiver late last year and Jamaal Williams is a solid receiver so both could benefit from this. The Packers offense will be different than what we saw last year, and Jones could be one of the biggest beneficiaries after suffering through inconsistent usage under Mike McCarthy.

BAL - TE Hayden Hurst good to go

Source: 105.7 The Fan - Tim Barbalace

Baltimore Ravens TE Hayden Hurst (hamstring) said he is good to go for training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurst's health has been an issue and he is behind Mark Andrews in his development at least in part because of it. He's not draftable right now, but his progress will affect Andrews value, so we'll be watching if he can stay on the field in camp.

BUF - Devin Singletary a wild card

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills RB Devin Singletary is a wild card in training camp as general manager Brandon Beane called him the most fun player he scouted this year. Singletary has drawn comparisons to RB LeSean McCoy, and the team could save $6 million by cutting or trading McCoy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Singletary will become a lot more interesting if McCoy is released, but Frank Gore and TJ Yeldon can still play well enough to have solid roles. Chances are the Bills running game won't produce a consistent fantasy option this year.

BUF - RB Frank Gore wants to be a factor

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills RB Frank Gore landed on the team motivated to be a factor, and he showed up in phenomenal shape during the spring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore should be a great fit in the Bills locker room and running back, but like last year, he'll be an obstacle to his backfieldmates fantasy value and not a rosterable player despite everlasting effectiveness running the ball.

OAK - Chris Warren competing for spot

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders RBs Chris Warren III and DeAndre Washington are likely competing for one roster spot, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Scott Bair, who lists RBs Josh Jacobs, Jalen Richard and Doug Martin as locks to make the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They are very different backs. Warren is a massive between the tackles pounder and Washington is nimble with application in space. Whichever doesn't make the team could catch on somewhere else.

BUF - QB Matt Barkley with leg up in backup competition?

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Barkley is believed to be the frontrunner over QB Tyree Jackson for the primary backup job behind QB Josh Allen, according to beat writer Jay Skurski.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson has a skillset and top-end size/athleticism combination similar to Allen's even though he was an undrafted free agent. Some think he could have greatly improved his draft stock if he had gone back to school. He should be slowly developed as a #3, but projects as an ideal backup to Allen.

    Saturday Update

KC - WR Tyreek Hill meeting a positive

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Terez A. Paylor

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill's meeting with NFL officials was considered a positive one by Hill's camp. Hill and the Chiefs could re-engage in contract extension negotiations if the investigation into Hill ends with a positive outcome, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most of the buzz about Hill's fantasy value is positive today. His suspension may not be long enough to materially affect his draft stock. He might not make it out of the third round in drafts now even though there are some in every draft who would not take him in any round. This situation is still volatile and could change before camp.

NYG - QB Eli Manning dismisses QB competition

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

New York Giants QB Eli Manning said he does not believes he is in a competition with QB Daniel Jones for the starting job. 'I mean no, I don't feel like it's a competition,' Manning said. 'I feel like I've got to do my job and I've got to compete every day and try to get better every day. That's the way it's been my whole life and that's just the way I've always approached practice every day to improve, to earn my place on the team, to earn the respect of the teammates and do it each year.' Manning said he has no problem helping Jones improve.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning has gotten a lot of deference from the current Giants regime, but observers said Jones looked better than him in the spring and he'll be on the spot to reverse that momentum in camp. Either way, the Giants will be one of the bottom ten teams in quarterback play this year.

TB - Ronald Jones verging on breakout?

Source: NFL Network - Terrell Davis

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones is a strong candidate to have a breakout season in 2019, according to NFL Network analyst Terrell Davis. 'Bucs running backs coach Todd McNair said during minicamp earlier this month that Jones looks more like the player the Bucs took in the second round than the one on the field last fall,' Davis wrote in a Tuesday, June 25 article on NFL.com. 'This is an encouraging report heading into next month's training camp. He's talented, explosive and is going to get his opportunities to win the starting job over Peyton Barber. If he performs to his ability, Jones could lock up the RB1 gig before too long.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has great acceleration and speed, but his ability to contribute in the passing game and the Bucs offensive line's ability to open holes for him are both questionable. He's worth a bench pick to see what happens, but chances are no Bucs back will have sustained relevance this year, especially if Andre Ellington secures a passing down role. The team could also trade for a back like Duke Johnson before the season or claim a veteran at final cuts.

Green Bay Packers QB DeShone Kizer has not played well during spring practices, according to Tom Oates of the Wisconsin State Journal.

It looks like John Dorsey did very well getting anything of value for Kizer after his disastrous rookie season under Hue Jackson.

SEA - TE Will Dissly expected to have big role

    Source: Seahawks.com - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks TE Will Dissly (knee) is expected to have a big role in the offense once he is fully recovered from his knee injury, in the opinion of Seahawks.com's John Boyle.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That could equal some big plays, but he is just a desperation play in a run-first offense. His main contributions will be as a blocker.

TEN - WR A.J. Brown draws lofty comparison

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown reminds NFL Network analyst Charles Davis 'a little bit' of Hall of Famer Andre Reed.'I wasn't sure about a 230-pound slot receiver. ... We're used to slot receivers being waterbug guys. But he's going to be a little bit like a guy who is in the Hall of Fame, a guy who played with the Buffalo Bills, a guy by the name of Andre Reed. Now he has a ways to go to be Andre Reed. But he's a thicker version of him, with good hands, and he's an excellent route runner. He can maneuver in traffic. ... A.J Brown can take a good number of those tight end routes inside and create nice plays for them,' Davis said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is a crafty receiver who can find space and make things happen after the catch, but he is also formidably built and can line up outside too. It doesn't seem like the Titans offense or Marcus Mariota are equipped to get the most from him and he will share slot snaps with Adam Humphries and outside snaps with Taywan Taylor, so don't look for a first year impact.

BUF - WR Cole Beasley set to lead team in catches?

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills WR Cole Beasley is the favorite to lead the team in receptions in 2019 due in part to offensive coordinator Brian Daboll's emphasis on the short passing game, in the opinion of the Buffalo News' Vic Carucci.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beasley might only post 50-60 catches on his way to this goal. If Brian Daboll and company can get Josh Allen to consistently execute and take the high percentage pass, Beasley could have some fantasy relevance, but he's not worth drafting except in very deep PPR leagues.

WAS - RB Bryce Love unlikely to be ready for opener

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Washington Redskins RB Bryce Love (knee) is not expected to be ready for the start of the season as he continues to recover from surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chris Thompson should open the season as the passing down back and he has turned that into consistent fantasy value in the past. He can't stay healthy for too long, but Thompson's best ball and late round PPR appeal are intact on this news.

BUF - Trio of RBs shared first-team snaps during spring

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Nate Mendelson

Buffalo Bills RBs LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore and Devin Singletary rotated snaps with the first-team throughout offseason practices. Bills.com writer Nate Mendelson believes the competition for snaps will 'heat up during training camp.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Singletary is getting a chance for touches early on, but Gore and McCoy will be tough to overcome at first. His value will get a bump if McCoy and his six million plus base salary are judged to be too much to carry. It seems like free agent addition TJ Yeldon will be situational back to start the season.

ARI - WR Christian Kirk in a good spot

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Christian Kirk seems primed to flourish and knows the offense, in the opinion of beat writer Darren Urban.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kirk could be a 100-catch player easily and quickly develop into Kyler Murray's go-to target in an offense that will keep defenses off balance. He should be a mid-round upside target in PPR leagues.

ARI - WR Andy Isabella primed for WR3?

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Andy Isabella will be a major factor on offense, and he could wind up starting in the slot, according to beat writer Darren Urban.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Isabella has the speed to take any target to the house if he is lost by the defense, but needs to tighten up his route running to take advantage of it. The air raid offense won't ask for precise route running as much as a feel for finding space, but Isabella needs to show more urgency than he did in Senior Bowl practices in either case. He's worth a late pick to get a part of the most exciting offense debut of the season.

OAK - RB Josh Jacobs poised for big year?

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders RB Josh Jacobs is expected to be the team's primary back this season and see most of the opportunities on first and second down, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Scott Bair, who writes that RB Doug Martin will be primarily used as injury protection rather than to spell Jacobs during games. RB Jalen Richard is expected to see opportunities on third down.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jacobs has a lot of tread left on the tires and was one of the best passing down backs in the draft. Jon Gruden ran Cadillac Williams into the ground in his rookie year, so Jacobs could have high volume right off of the bat. He's an upside RB2 pick in a crowded 3rd-4th round tier.

DEN - WR Courtland Sutton could improve in red zone

Source: The Denver Post - Ryan O'Halloran

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton should be better in the red zone this season due to QB Joe Flacco's willingness to throw 50/50 balls, in the opinion of the Denver Post's Ryan O'Halloran, who says the Broncos should 'prioritize' using Sutton's size more in the red zone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are some variables in play with Sutton's value this year including his development as a player, Emmanuel Sanders readiness for Week 1, and everyone's chemistry with the new quarterback. Flacco is an upgrade from what the Broncos had last year, but just how much and whether Sutton can be more consistent are big questions we'll be monitoring.

New York Giants TE Rhett Ellison performed well when working with the starting unit during minicamp, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ellison was on the field 40-50% of the time last year and that doesn't appear to be changing this year. He's part of the reason the number three wide receiver for the Giants is unlikely to matter in fantasy leagues.

    Sunday Update

SF - WR Jordan Matthews making plays

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Matthews spent time with the first-team offense during spring practices and had 'his moments' in that role, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews will be battling to make the team in one of the deepest wide receiver groups in the league. There might be a spot as the #6 up for grabs between Matthews and Richie James. Either could catch on elsewhere if they don't make the 49ers final 53.

SF - WR Marquise Goodwin leaves his mark

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin looked the best of all the receivers during spring practices, in the opinion of Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Goodwin was a 5th/6th round pick last summer when he was projected to be Jimmy Garoppolo's #1 receiver. Dante Pettis has taken over that speculative perch, but Goodwin is still a major piece of the pass offense and shouldn't be lasting until the very late rounds.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard flexes his muscle

    Source: NJ.com - Matt Lombardo

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard was 'far and away the most dominant wide receiver' during spring practices and minicamp, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shepard might be the most targeted and most valuable receiver on the Giants, but what will that be worth in a Saquon Barkley-centric horizontal pass offense. He's worth a bench pick, but quarterback play will limit his upside.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert watched minicamp

Source: WKRC TV Cincinnati - Richard Skinner

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) did not participate in minicamp, but he is 'trending in the right direction' ahead of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert's ankle injury was a freak incident, but it is obviously serious if he is still sidelined. If he can open camp healthy and avoid the PUP list, he might be worth a late pick as a potential cheap TE1 for as long as he can stay on the field.

NFL - Two teams could pursue RB Darren Sproles

    Source: NJ.com - Mike Kaye

Free-agent RB Darren Sproles (Eagles) could receive interest from the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints if he decides to play this season, in the opinion of NJ.com's Mike Kaye.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sproles showed last year that he can still contribute on passing downs and he is an experienced player in both teams systems. If the Eagles don't like what they see from Boston Scott, who the Saints drafted in the sixth round in hopes he'd fill the old Sproles role, they could turn to the veteran.

HOU - RB Lamar Miller hoping to improve as pass catcher

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller said that he has been concentrating on running routes on the outside of the backfield this offseason to improve as a pass catcher.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is a viable pass catcher out of the backfield, but not a true mismatch creator in the passing game. If D'Onta Foreman regains form from his 2017 achilles tear, Miller's pass catching could keep him relevant in fantasy leagues.

GB - J'Mon Moore on the bubble?

Source: Packers Wire - Zach Kruse

Green Bay Packers WR J'Mon Moore could be on the bubble for making the 53-man roster, in the opinion of Packers Wire's Zach Kruse, though he also writes that Moore has the 'quickness and size' to be a starter in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore was drafted first in the trio of big receivers the team added last year, but appears to be last of the group right now. His quickness sets him apart athletically, but he hasn't made an impact yet. He should catch on elsewhere if the Packers release him.

WAS - WR Paul Richardson making strides

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins WR Paul Richardson (shoulder) 'should be ready to go' for training camp after being limited during minicamp, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson has never been able to stay healthy for long, keeping him from using his speed and deep ball skills to change games consistently. He has some deep best ball value, but otherwise is only an emergency play in redraft leagues because of his lack of durability and mediocre surrounding offense.

WAS - Cam Sims made his mark

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins WR Cam Sims was 'fantastic' during spring practices, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington doesn't have any truly established outside receivers other than Paul Richardson. 2016 First round pick has failed to make a consistent impact. This year's third round pick Terry McLaurin has potential and experience with first-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins, but Sims has length that McLaurin lacks. Sims could have an outside shot to make the team and get some snaps after Maurice Harris left for New England in free agency.

NYG - RB Wayne Gallman's stock falling?

    Source: NJ.com - Matt Lombardo

New York Giants RB Wayne Gallman appears to have fallen behind RB Paul Perkins in the battle for the No. 2 running back job, and Gallman isn't a lock to be the No. 3 back at this point, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gallman looked serviceable as a receiver and runner in limited action in 2017, but appears to be falling out of favor with the current regime. He's a versatile high effort back but might be looking for a job after the team added Rod Smith.

NYG - RB Paul Perkins the backup?

    Source: NJ.com - Matt Lombardo

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins was the first running back to sub in when RB Saquon Barkleywas on the sidelines during spring practices, and Matt Lombardo of NJ.com believes Perkins will enter the season as the top backup if he continues to play well in training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perkins was once the team's starter, and he could end up being the handcuff to Barkley in what is a wide open position battle for the #2 back. We'll keep him at the end of our waiver wire watch list for now.
