NFL Player News - Week of 5/6/19

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

NO - RB Alvin Kamara utilized in slot

    Source: Pro Football Focus

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara was lined up in the slot on 18.9 percent of his receiving snaps in the 2018 season -- the fourth most among running backs with at least 25 slot snaps.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We should see those numbers continue for Kamara. The Saints are looking for weapons behind WR Michael Thomas in the passing game, and Kamara can be very dangerous as a receiver...from the slot or out of the backfield. He's RB5 (1.06) in ADP right now in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - D.K. Metcalf making early impression

Source: The Associated Press - Tim Booth

Seattle Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf has made a quick impression in the team's rookie camp. Asked what impresses him most about the second-round draft pick, head coach Pete Carroll said: 'Well, it's almost like, what doesn't, you know? He's big and he's fast. He's got really good feet, you know, and his catching range was exhibited today for a start,' Carroll said Saturday, May 4. 'And you know, we've got to figure it out, figure out where it is, maybe even more unique than we thought coming in. So we just develop it as we go. But big and really fast and the catching range was really obvious.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Metcalf is an impressive player, and his physical traits stand out when he's just running through drills. We'll see if the rookie can be more than just a '9-route guy' for the Seahawks. Metcalf is big, fast in a straight line and tracks passes over his shoulder. He needs to be more refined as a route runner and learn how to change direction without losing much speed in order for him to play up to his potential as a pro.

TB - TE O.J. Howard has fan in new OC

    Source: PewterReport.com - Mark Cook

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (ankle) has a big fan in new offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. 'Man, I've never seen guys like that,' Leftwich said Thursday, May 2, at one of the team's offseason workouts. 'It's hard to be around guys that can do what O.J. can do. He's very - there's not a lot of those human beings walking around on earth. Trust me, because everybody is looking for him. Everybody is looking for the next O.J. Howard. He's a young guy in this process, but what he can do being that big, being able to run it's a matchup nightmare for defenses.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard was a top-10 fantasy tight end last year, snaring 34 passes for 565 yards and five touchdowns. This season his production could continue to grow. In Arizona, head coach Bruce Arians didn't utilize his tight ends that much. We should see that change in 2019 now that Arians is with the Bucs. First, the game is going to the middle of the field. Second, Howard is a damn good tight end who can move the chains and be a presence in the red zone. His current ADP is TE15 (13.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NE - Damien Harris sees coaching similaries

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris says the draft-day phone call he received from Bill Belichick immediately reminded of his former coach, Alabama's Nick Saban. 'The two-minute conversation I had with coach Belichick on the phone sounded very much like if I was on the phone with coach Saban,' Harris said recently. 'Everybody knows their relationship, everybody knows they're very similar in their demeanors, their coaching styles. They're both about business and winning.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris is a talented runner in his own right, and the Patriots will know how to get the most out of his skill set. He's buried on the depth chart behind Sony Michel, James White and Rex Burkhead at this time. We love his upside in dynasty formats where you can take the long view on Harris and his pro career.

BAL - Joe Horn Jr. making good first impression

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Undrafted free-agent WR Joe Horn Jr. - son of the former Pro Bowl wide receiver - is trying out for the Baltimore Ravens during the team's rookie minicamp and has 'looked really good,' according to head coach John Harbaugh.'I guess the thing that struck me about him was he looked like Joe Horn. ... Quick, fast, really good hands, in and out of breaks. You can tell he's worked with his dad a lot on technique. I just thought he looked excellent,' Harbaugh told ESPN's Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a feel-good story to be sure as Horn Sr. was a fan favorite when he was scoring touchdowns and making cell phone calls from the end zone with the Saints. The truth of the matter is Horn Jr. is likely angling for a spot on the Ravens practice squad. They have added a ton of talent to the WR corps this offseason, and Horn Jr. is no guarantee to make the team.

SEA - Jazz Ferguson checks in at 240

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks undrafted free-agent WR Jazz Ferguson showed up to rookie minicamp at 240 pounds after playing at Northwestern State (La.) at 227. Ferguson finished strong Saturday, May 4, but he has 'dropped more than one pass' and 'hasn't looked as fast as his 4.45-second time' in the 40-yard dash, according to ESPN.com's Brady Henderson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ferguson has the size to be a problem for smaller defenders. He's gone through some trials as a young collegian (moving on from LSU) and reports say he's more mature than he used to be. We'll monitor him in super deep dynasty leagues because of his physical traits.

SEA - Travis Homer shows off at minicamp

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks sixth-round RB Travis Homer flashed 'an extra gear' and hauled in a deep ball with two defenders in coverage during rookie minicamp Saturday, May 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Homer has an electricity to his game when he runs the rock. With the Miami Hurricanes in college, Homer did a nice job of taking what was there from the defense and bursting for more when he could. The sixth-round pick is buried on the depth chart but we are monitoring him in dynasty formats.

DEN - Noah Fant draws lofty comparison

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant will be Denver's version of San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle, according to one NFL executive.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That should get your attention. Kittle went to Iowa, like Fant, but was a fifth-round pick when he came out...not a first-round pick like Fant. In 2018, Kittle had 88 catches for 1,377 receiving yards and five touchdowns - production good for the no.2 fantasy tight end spot last season. Fant won't reach those levels as a rookie (or should we say he's unlikely to do that), but we wouldn't be surprised to see him catch 50 passes for the Broncos as a rookie. Not only is there a Kittle/Fant connection, but there's also a Kittle connection with new Broncos OC Rich Scangarello (he was with the 49ers last year as the quarterback coach).

CIN - High ceiling for Rodney Anderson?

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Sando

Cincinnati Bengals RB Rodney Anderson 'can be the best back' from the 2019 draft class if he can stay healthy, according to one NFL executive, and the executive compared Anderson to Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson is more like Stevan Ridley than he is David Johnson...and that's not a bad thing. In college at Oklahoma, Anderson was banged up quite a bit but he's a hard-charging back so that's to be expected somewhat. We'll see if he can stay healthy and impress as a reserve runner for the Bengals in 2019.

    Tuesday Update

CAR - QB Cam Newton feeling great

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he feels at full strength and hopes to be throwing before training camp. Newton hasn't been given a timetable for when he'll be cleared, but he's confident there won't be another setback like last season. He began a vegan diet in hopes of getting his weight into the 237-pound range, which would be the lowest of his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton's weight isn't an issue, it's the fact that he takes big hits from defenders all the time. He's an athletic quarterback but using his legs comes with a price. The team needs to protect him better when he's in the pocket and Newton needs to learn how to get rid of the ball quicker or throw the ball away in order to preserve his health. We should see him at some point in training camp.

CIN - WR A.J. Green to be fine for 2019

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (toe) expects to be healthy and ready for training camp this summer after undergoing toe surgery in December, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the veteran superstar here. Toe injuries are always tricky to deal with and take time to fully come back from. It sounds like Green is on the right track with no setbacks so far. We should see him eased into action when the Bengals get to training camp.

LAC - QB Philip Rivers not worried about contract

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers said he is not worried about his contract situation and is willing to play out the last year of his current contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No hurries, no worries here. Rivers is in the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $23 million in 2019. The Chargers should get something done with Rivers to keep him around as their starter for the next few years.

WAS - QB Colt McCoy may be ready for camp

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (leg) hopefully will be ready for training camp, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington has changed their QB depth chart drastically this offseason, trading the Broncos for Case Keenum and selecting Dwayne Haskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. There's no need to rush McCoy back into action. He's got plenty of experience but probably not going to win the starting job in 2019.

KC - Four draft picks sign with Kansas City

Source: The Kansas City Star - Brooke Pryor

Kansas City Chiefs second-round WR Mecole Hardman, sixth-round DB Rashad Fenton, sixth-round RB Darwin Thompson and seventh-round OG Nick Allegretti signed four-year contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, May 6. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs added a couple of weapons to their offense in the 2019 NFL draft. Hardman is the player to watch here, especially if Tyreek Hill is suspended by the league during the regular season. He's a speedy wide receiver who can take the top off the defense, and Hardman can work as a return man too. Thompson is a 200-pound grinder who does a good job of maintaining balance upon contact.

TB - RB Kerwynn Williams to Tampa

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent RB Kerwynn Williams (Lions) will sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, May 6, on an undisclosed deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams played under Bruce Arians when both were with the Arizona Cardinals, so he knows the offense and what is expected of him. The speedster from Utah State is going to compete for a reserve role behind Ron Jones and Peyton Barber in 2019.

SEA - Terry Wright works primarily out of slot

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR Terry Wright, an undrafted free agent out of Purdue, was active throughout the rookie minicamp, primarily working in the slot. It's a position where the team might have the most opportunity with WR Doug Baldwin contemplating retirement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wright was projected as a slot receiver during his time in college at Purdue. He was a big-play threat there in 2018, averaging a healthy 16.7 yards per catch. Wright ran a 4.34 40-yard dash at Purdue's pro day and should at least contribute as a return man for the Seahawks if he makes the 53-man roster.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - QB Dak Prescott may approach $30M annually

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and the team are reportedly working toward a contract extension that will approach $30 million annually, if not more, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That sounds about right and most everyone (including the Cowboys) should have been expecting the number to be around $30 million annually. Prescott is in the final year of his rookie contract and we expect the Cowboys to get a deal done sometime before the start of the regular season. Fantasy GMs are currently taking Prescott off the board at QB23 (14.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

IND - TE Eric Ebron eyeing TE TD record

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts TE Eric Ebron said Tuesday, May 7, he is aiming for Rob Gronkowski's single-season tight end-record of 17 receiving touchdowns. 'I gotta go get 17,' said Ebron, who had 13 receiving TDs and one rushing score in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy GMs would welcome that number. Ebron failed to put things all together with the Lions, but his fresh start with the Colts last year was phenomenal. We're hoping to see a repeat of his top-5 performance in 2019.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead eyeing better health

    Source: WEEI.com - Ryan Hannable

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead is trying a new approach this offseason after missing 14 of 32 regular-season games the past two seasons. 'You learn from your experiences from the past, and also from some of the older guys,' Burkhead said Tuesday, May 7. 'Like Matthew Slater, he's been in it for awhile now and how he takes care of his body. There are things. I remember my rookie year, I think I took one week off and then I was right back in it, hard core lifting right after the season. You learn that is not the best way to go about it. Your body takes time to recover, mentally, physically and there's some little things you can pick up too, whether that is yoga or pilates, things like that just to make sure your body is in the best shape possible. When you make it far you really have to stay on top of that, especially here, you understand your body is your temple and it's your line of work.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead has talent and certainly is a player the Patriots can use effectively as a runner or receiving threat. If healthy, Burkhead has a chance to be a touchdown vulture working in a RBBC with Sony Michel and James White. We'll see if this new regiment keeps him on the right track with his health.

NYG - Daniel Jones had odd request at combine

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones was asked to work out as a tight end by an unnamed team at the NFL Scouting Combine because they didn't think he was good enough to be a starting quarterback.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has his struggles as a quarterback but the Giants are going to give him plenty of opportunity to be their franchise guy. If you hated the Jones pick, then this story is only going to make you smile (or infuriate you if you're a Giants fan). If you know Jones is a work in progress, then this story is just an interesting footnote. Only time will tell whether or not the Giants made a mistake with their no.6 overall pick.

NFL - WR Dez Bryant posts video of workout

    Source: 1 No Source

Free-agent WR Dez Bryant (Achilles') posted a video across social media showing him catching passes and running, as he makes his way back from a ruptured Achilles' tendon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's about six months in his recovery and might garner some interest when we get closer to training camp. Bryant was with the Saints last year in practice when he tore his Achilles' and perhaps they would consider bringing him back if he is at full strength.

NO - Deonte Harris lands in the Big Easy

    Source: NewOrleansSaints.com

Undrafted free-agent WR Deonte Harris (Assumption College) signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, May 7. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris is tiny, measuring in at 5'6" 170 pounds but he's got great foot frequency and can change direction without losing much speed. At Assumption College he was used on screen passes to turn them into long gains. He was also quite adept as a return man. It's a big leap from Assumption College to the NFL, but we'll see if Harris can make that jump.

CIN - Cincinnati scoops up Darrin Hall

    Source: Bengals.com

Free-agent RB Darrin Hall (Browns) was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, May 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hall (5-11, 225), a 2019 UDFA out of out of the University of Pittsburgh, had signed with the Browns on May 3 and was waived on Monday. He's a big back who has good acceleration and burst in a straight line. Hall has a couple of moves (like a spin move) to create his own space, but he's not overly fast and takes too much time to change direction. In super crazy deep dynasty formats we'll monitor his pro career.

OAK - WR Jalin Marshall inks deal with Oakland

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Michael Gehlken

Free-agent WR Jalin Marshall (AAF) signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, May 7. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall was originally undrafted out of Ohio State in 2016. He latched on with the Jets, primarily contributing on special teams. Marshall gets a shot with the Raiders now and their revamped WR corps. He's a long-shot to make the roster to be sure, but he could carry the momentum over he had from the AAF to an end-of-the-depth-chart spot in Oakland.

PHI - JJ Arcega-Whiteside may not play much?

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Dave Zangaro

Philadelphia Eagles second-round WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside figures to be no better than the fourth receiver on the roster behind Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson and Nelson Agholor in 2019, which makes it unlikely he will play much outside of special teams as a rookie, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a little soon to be calling that, especially with Agholor as the third guy. That's a battle to watch in training camp. We'll see if the rookie can unseat the veteran, and until then we'll sit back and watch. Arcega-Whiteside doesn't get open with speed, but he does present a good target for his quarterback because of his guile and ability to haul in contested catches.

KC - Mecole Hardman makes good first impression

Source: The Kansas City Star - Brooke Pryor

Kansas City Chiefs second-round WR Mecole Hardman got off to a rough start in rookie minicamp Saturday, May 4 - showing rawness in his routes, mishandling a couple of punts during individual return drills and dropping a couple catches off easy throws - but he was fielding punts cleanly and making difficult, leaping catches just over the goal line during red-zone drills by Monday, May 6, according to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star.'Every day he got a little better. ... These routes are new to him. He did a nice job in the red zone, which normally is the toughest place to work, but he did extremely well there. He had a good finish,' head coach Andy Reid said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a great sign for the young playmaker and the Chiefs offense. Who knows what in the world is going to happen to Tyreek Hill. The NFL may suspend him, the Chiefs may release him...or things could work out where Hill remains with the Chiefs and continues to shine on offense. Hardman is there as an insurance policy in case Hill is no longer with the team or suspended. The rookie from Georgia has a ton of speed and can get vertical in a hurry. Any piece of this offense, especially one with the talent of Hardman, should excite Fantasy GMs in any format.

CHI - David Montgomery confident in his hands

    Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery feels he can be an impact player catching balls out of the backfield. 'I'm very confident in myself as far as catching the ball,' Montgomery said. 'I think I catch the ball well. I played quarterback in high school, so I was catching the ball every play we ran out of the gun, so I got used to it over time.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Montgomery is a steady runner who can use his instincts and guile to maximize yardage on most every carry. As a receiver out of the backfield, Montgomery does a good job of looking passes into his hands with his arms extended away from his body. We love Montgomery's skill set and ability to be a workhorse for a team, and that includes his ability to stay on the field all three downs.

CHI - Riley Ridley praised by head coach

    Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears WR Riley Ridley was praised by head coach Matt Nagy for his work during the team's first minicamp practice on Friday, May 3. 'I thought he looked good, not a lot of mental errors,' Nagy said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ridley has an impressive skill set when it comes to the nuances of playing the WR position. He's not a burner, but Ridley knows how to tell a story with his routes and get open. Ridley has sure hands and was a bit of a touchdown hog for the Bulldogs in college. We're excited to see him with the Bears and will monitor his progress in dynasty formats.

    Thursday Update

DAL - QB Dak Prescott receives contract offer

Source: NFL Network - Jane Slater

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has received an initial contact extension offer from the Cowboys, and the team is waiting for his counter offer, according to sources. The two sides are not believed to be close to any deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's part of the negotiation process. The Cowboys are trying to pay him a fair price but not overpay him. Prescott is trying to make the most money possible. The number of $30 million annually has been tossed out there and could be around where Prescott's final number lands. Either way, we don't see Prescott's contract situation going on for too long. They're trying to hammer out the numbers now and should be able to come to an agreement.

NYG - RB Jay Ajayi a possible fit with NYG?

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

The New York Giants could be interested in free-agent RB Jay Ajayi (Eagles) as a possible backup to RB Saquon Barkley, in the opinion of SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starting on Wednesday, signed free agents do not count against the compensatory pick forumla. That means we should see Ajayi find a new home in the near future. The Giants have superstar Saquon Barkley as their starter, but behind him they could use some veteran depth. Currently, Wayne Gallman is penciled in as the primary backup behind Barkley. The Giants also signed former Dallas Cowboys RB Rod Smith on Wednesday.

HOU - QB Deshaun Watson did solid work outside pocket

    Source: Pro Football Focus

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson threw for 686 yards outside of the pocket in 2018 - the third-highest total in the NFL - according to Pro Football Focus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson had 8 touchdowns compared to 2 interceptions on those passes. His 65.4 percent completion on passes outside the pocket ranked 2nd in the league for quarterbacks with 75 or more such attempts. The Texans spent draft capital this offseason to upgrade the offensive line and hopefully protect Watson better in 2019.

KC - QB Patrick Mahomes created magic outside pocket

    Source: Pro Football Focus

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes threw for an NFL-best 1,155 yards outside of the pocket in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mahomes had 14 passing touchdowns compared to just 4 interceptions on such passes. Advanced data just backs up what everyone sees on film here -- Mahomes is really good outside the pocket. We don't see any defense really containing him that much in 2019 and he's obviously a QB1 from a fantasy perspective.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders able to move laterally

Source: The Denver Post - Ryan O'Halloran

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles) began running in cleats last week and has added lateral movements to his workout in recent days, although he has not attempted to start running an entire route tree as of Tuesday, May 7.'When I do run full speed, I feel good. I wouldn't say we're ahead of schedule, I wouldn't say we're behind schedule. I just feel like we're somewhere in between. We'll see how it goes once I start running routes and how I feel to see if I'm ready to go. .. 'It's been feeling good. Still sore every now and then,' Sanders told the Denver Post.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders is on the right track for his recovery from Achilles' surgery but we probably won't see him do much in training camp or the preseason. Fantasy GMs need to recognize that second-year WR Courtland Sutton is going to be the Broncos no.1 receiver in 2019. That makes Sanders a valuable no.2 wide receiver in Denver, but it does hurt his fantasy stock. The Broncos won't fill the air with footballs this season, making Sutton more of a fantasy WR2 and Sanders in the WR3 range with upside.

MIA - Myles Gaskin agrees to terms

Miami Dolphins seventh-round draft choice RB Myles Gaskin agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Dolphins Wednesday, May 8, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gaskin is a compact runner at 5'9" 205 pounds, and he is known for being a tough runner inside or outside. He's capable as a receiving threat out of the backfield and has the quick feet to make defenders miss in open space. Kenyan Drake is the Dolphins starter, but Gaskin could push Kalen Ballage for the no.2 spot on the depth chart.

NYG - RB Rod Smith joins Giants

    Source: Giants.com

Free-agent RB Rod Smith (Cowboys) signed with the New York Giants Wednesday, May 8. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith has spent almost all of his pro career with the Cowboys. He stays in the NFC East, but now with the Giants he will compete to be the primary backup behind Saquon Barkley. With only guys like Wayne Gallman or Paul Perkins to contend with, Smith might climb the depth chart.

PIT - Two Steelers picks sign

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers third-round pick WR Diontae Johnson and fourth-round pick RB Benny Snell signed four-year contracts Wednesday, May 8. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson plays like a young version of Emmanuel Sanders. He's got speed to get by defenders in a hurry and is not afraid to go over the middle to make difficult catches. Johnson is likely to compete with Donte Moncrief for the no.3 receiver behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington. In the Steelers elaborate passing attack, that has fantasy value. Snell is competing to be the no.3 running back for the Steelers. He's a big back who can grind down opponents and has a nose for the end zone. Snell did not test well at the Scouting Combine but he does have good instincts for the position.

NFL - RB Bilal Powell cleared from injury

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell (neck) was fully cleared from a neck injury that was once thought to threaten his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the veteran back here. Powell only made it through 7 games last season with the Jets. They've completely moved on with a revamped RB corps led by Le'Veon Bell, so Powell is unlikely to go back to the Jets. We'll see teams take a look at him and examine his neck injury carefully. Some team will need veteran depth at some point later this offseason.

    Friday Update

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin let go

    Source: Seahawks.com - John Boyle

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (hernia, knee, shoulder) was released with a failed physical designation Thursday, May 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin should be retiring in the near future. The Seahawks were ready for this move and that's why they selected three wide receivers in the 2019 NFL draft. Without Baldwin, the Seahawks no.1 wide receiver becomes Tyler Lockett. The rest will have to compete in training camp to establish a pecking order.

MIA - Miami prepping for QB battle

Source: Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chad O'Shea said Thursday, May 10, that the team has 'options' at quarterback, and the starting job will be 'earned' on the field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Josh Rosen will not be handed the job. He's going to be competing with wily veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting position. Fitzpatrick won't just fade away, so this is a battle that could go well into training camp and the preseason. If Rosen wants to make the most of his second chance, beating Fitzpatrick early would show signs that he's not the bust some are already painting him to be after one lousy season as a rookie with the Cardinals last year.

ARI - Kyler Murray officially signs

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray signed a four-year deal with a fifth-year team option for 2023 on Thursday, May 9. He will make $23.59 million as a signing bonus and will count $6.39 million against the 2019 salary cap.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The no.1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft should start from day one. It's all about fit in the NFL, and Murray certainly fits Kliff Kingsbury's 'Air Raid' system. Murray has a strong arm, is incredibly athletic and not afraid to challenge a defense downfield. Lack of size is a concern in terms of body armor. He's short, but he's not that big so longevity is a legit concern. Murray has QB1 upside for Fantasy GMs, with a current ADP of QB14 (10.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NE - Benjamin Watson headed back to New England

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent TE Benjamin Watson (Saints) reportedly agreed to terms with the New England Patriots - the team that made him a first-round pick in 2004 - one a one-year contract worth up to $3 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson was retired for just a little bit but found going back to the Patriots too tempting. A 2004 first-round pick of the Patriots, Watson is not the player he used to be but he could still provide plenty of veteran experience behind Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

DEN - Drew Lock has adjustments ahead

Source: The Denver Post - Ryan O'Halloran

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has a number of on-field adjustments to make as the team enters its rookie minicamp Friday, May 10. 'Drew obviously has a lot of talent -- he's got a lot of arm talent -- but he's got to work on a lot of different things, too,' general manager John Elway said. 'When you look at what he did in college offensively, he was in the spread and wasn't under center very often. With what we're going to do offensively, he's going to have a lot of work to do.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lock had five passing attempts from under center in 2018, and the Broncos offense under new OC Rich Scangarello is going to ask him to work from under center a lot. That's his first adjustment, but there are more. Lock has a big arm but needs to learn that he doesn't have to put full pepper on short-to-intermediate passes. He also needs to clean up his footwork to help improve his accuracy and Lock needs to also get a more consistent release point. Good thing he's got time as the backup to Joe Flacco in 2019.

MIA - QB Josh Rosen has fan in former coach

Source: Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen has a believer in Los Angeles assistant offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, his offensive coordinator and interim head coach at UCLA. 'Knowing Josh, from working with him on a daily basis, I believe he will react and respond as he does in everything,' Fisch said in an interview published Thursday, May 9. 'He's very self-aware. He recognizes his skill set. He recognizes his ability in comparison to others. And I think in his mind he'll just go out there and show the Miami Dolphins they made the right decision. And do everything he can to perform at the highest level, recognizing he has all the skills in the world. And I don't think he'll be set back. I don't think he'll feel that he needs to prove someone wrong as much as he would like to prove someone right.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rosen has a lot to prove in 2019. First, he's got to beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job. Second, he's got to show that last year was a fluke and he can flash as a starter. Finally, Rosen has to make quicker decisions with the football and not seem as frustrated when things aren't going his way. Rosen gets a second chance with the Dolphins, but they could easily move on from him and target another first-round quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft if things don't start trending up for the young passer.

NYJ - Trevon Wesco officially inks rookie pact

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets fourth-round TE Trevon Wesco (West Virginia) signed a four-year contract Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wesco is 6'3" 267 pounds and known as a strong blocker. He's a work in progress as a receiver and will need time to develop as a pro.

JAX - Gardner Minshew inks pact with Jacksonville

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars sixth-round QB Gardner Minshew (Washington State) signed a four-year contract on Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Minshew is a smart quarterback who can accurately distribute the ball on short-to-intermediate throws. He doesn't have a big arm but he gets by on pre-snap reads and getting rid of the ball quickly. The rookie from Washington State could end up winning the primary backup job behind Nick Foles in 2019.

CAR - Will Grier inks rookie deal

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Carolina Panthers third-round QB Will Grier (West Virginia) signed a four-year contract worth $3.852 million Thursday, May 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grier is a quarterback we love to add in dynasty formats. He's clearly behind Cam Newton on the depth chart, so his landing spot could've been much better, but we love Grier's natural skill set and aggressive mindset as a passer. We'll see if he can impress in training camp and the preseason as Newton recovers from offseason shoulder surgery.

WAS - Washington signs eight from draft class

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins first-round QB Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), fourth-round RB Bryce Love (Stanford), fourth-round OG Wes Martin (Indiana), fifth-round C Ross Pierschbacher (Alabama), fifth-round LB Cole Holcomb (North Carolina), sixth-round WR Kelvin Harmon (North Carolina State), seventh-round CB Jimmy Moreland (James Madison) and DE/LB Jordan Brailford (Oklahoma State) to four-year contracts Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Haskins is the quarterback of the future in Washington. Only Case Keenum is in front of him on the depth chart, and he should be able to surpass him in training camp. Love is a dynamic playmaker who didn't look the same last year coming back from a knee injury. Put on the 2017 Stanford tape and you'll see one of the most exciting backs in college football. We'll see if Love can push a guy like Chris Thompson for playing time when it comes to being a change-of-pace back behind Adrian Peterson.

PIT - Zach Gentry inks rookie pact

    Source: Steelers.com - Teresa Varley

Pittsburgh Steelers fifth-round TE Zach Gentry (Michigan) signed a four-year contract Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gentry didn't test well at the 2019 Scouting Combine, but that didn't stop the Steelers from selecting him near the top of the fifth round. At Michigan, Gentry flashed some ability as a receiver and has the size to be a much better blocker than he showed on film. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Vance McDonald.

DET - Detroit locks in three from draft class

    Source: DetroitLions.com

Detroit Lions first-round TE T.J. Hockenson (Iowa), second-round LB Jahlani Tavai (Hawaii) and fifth-round CB Amani Oruwariye (Penn State) signed four-year contracts Thursday, May 9. Hockenson's deal includes a team option for a fifth season. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hockenson is the player to watch here. The top-10 pick drew plenty of Rob Gronkowski or Travis Kelce comparisons in the pre-draft process. Those are lofty comparisons but they might not be too far off. We'll see if the Lions can use Hockenson the right way...which is early and often. He's a devastating blocker and a nuanced receiver. His current ADP is TE14 (13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SF - TE George Kittle stayed busy in the slot

    Source: Pro Football Focus

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle saw 24.4 percent of his targeted passes when he was lined up in the slot in 2018, and he finished in a tie for fourth among tight ends in yards per route run from there, according to Pro Football Focus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kittle exploded onto the scene in 2018 with an incredible 88 catches for 1,377 yards and five receiving touchdowns. He should come close to those numbers once again this year, and some more touchdowns would be nice. Kittle has a current ADP of TE3 (3.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PIT - WR James Washington to play lighter in 2019

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington has reportedly 'slimmed down' this offseason and is expected to play around 210 pounds this season, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully Washington's lighter weight will help him play better. As a rookie, Washington only had 16 catches for 217 yards and one touchdown. He's got better talent than that stat line shows. With Antonio Brown gone to the Raiders, Washington has a chance to earn the no.2 spot for the Steelers opposite JuJu Smith-Schuster.

TEN - Game slowed for WR Corey Davis

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis said the game slowed down a lot in his second season in 2018. 'Me and Marcus (Mariota,) our chemistry is growing every day, and it's continuing to grow,' Davis said. 'Our job is to get open and catch the ball... Our chemistry is looking good and continuing to grow.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis posted career-best numbers in his second season as a pro. In 2018, Davis was targeted 112 times, caught 65 passes for 891 yards and four touchdowns. That ranked 27th in fantasy football (standard-scoring leagues). We'll see if Davis can continue to improve those numbers with his chemistry getting stronger with Mariota. The Titans drafted A.J. Brown and added Adam Humphries in free agency, so the target share is likely to be different in 2019. Oh yeah, TE Delanie Walker is coming back from injury too. Davis currently has an ADP of WR34 (8.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Great guy, but rarely can hit a WR more the 15 yds down the field. He missed Gallup on at least 10 throws last year that would have been TD’s or big gains.

    Saturday Update

NYJ - Le'Veon Bell expected for minicamp

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to be at the team's mandatory minicamp in June. 'I don't expect him not to be there,' head coach Adam Gase said Friday, May 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The double negative is a little confusing, but we agree with Gase. Bell not showing for voluntary workouts is no big deal, but missing mandatory minicamp practices would be more concerning.

NE - Dontelle Inman joining Patriots

Free-agent WR Dontrelle Inman (Colts) agreed to terms Friday, May 10, with the New England Patriots, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bruce Ellington's stint with the team was short and they acted quickly to pick up Inman, who has been productive when asked for the Chargers and Colts. He is an outside receiver who has a shot to make the team if Demaryius Thomas doesn't recover from an achilles tear by Week 1 and Josh Gordon doesn't get reinstated.

MIN - TE Kyle Rudolph extension talks end

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph has been discussing a contract extension with the team, but those talks broke off Friday, May 10, according to sources. Trading Rudolph very much remains a possibility for the Vikings, and there is interest around the league.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Irv Smith was the team's second round pick and he might have more to offer than Rudolph does right now. Tyler Conklin was coming on as a receiving option late last year and David Morgan is a quality blocker so the team could easily more on from Rudolph. The Patriots were a possibility, but it sounds like they will sign Ben Watson assuming he comes out of retirement.

LAR - Darrell Henderson draws lofty comparison

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Los Angeles Rams RB Darrell Henderson has his new team excited after drafting him in the third round. '(He) gives us an (Alvin) Kamara element,' general manager Les Snead said. Added head coach Sean McVay: 'We'd identified him as a guy that has a specific skill set, that really can do some unique things for us offensively. He was one of those guys that stood out for us, so we're excited about getting him here.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lance Dunbar and Alvin Kamara are very different players, but the team has compared Henderson to both. Just know that he is the best big play runner in this draft and he's in a situation that made CJ Anderson a fantasy star late last year. Henderson will be an essential high ceiling bench stash in redraft and late first round value in dynasty rookie drafts.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Donnel Pumphrey is in danger of being left off the 53-man roster, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pumphrey didn't look that different from Tarik Cohen when both were in college, but injuries and a poor rookie camp have held him back. Another team should look at him if the Eagles let him go because Pumphrey can also contribute in the return game.

PHI - Philly signs three draft picks

Philadelphia Eagles second-round draft choice WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside, fourth-round draft choice DE Shareef Miller and fifth-round draft choice QB Clayton Thorson signed four-year contracts with the Eagles Friday, May 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Arcega-Whiteside might not see much playing time this year with Nelson Agholor still on the roster, but if Alshon Jeffery or DeSean Jackson get hurt, he'll get on the field and should mesh well with Carson Wentz's penchant for throwing downfield. He'll be on our waiver wire watch list unless the Eagles suffer injuries at wide receiver in the preseason.

PHI - Miles Sanders under contract

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com - Chris McPherson

Philadelphia Eagles second-round draft choice RB Miles Sanders signed a four-year contract with the Eagles Friday, May 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders has a chance to make the Eagles tear up their previous RBBC gameplans under Doug Pederson, especially considering the premium pick they gave up to get him. Sanders is a quality all-around back with plus tools who has a lot of tread left on the tires after backing up Saquon Barkley for the majority of his time at Penn State. He could be a big impact player in redraft leagues too.

Free-agent RB Mark Walton (Bengals) is trying out with the Miami Dolphins during their rookie minicamp Friday, May 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walton had multiple arrests this offseason, which was enough to earn his release. He was successful with the Hurricanes down in Miami as a collegiate player and the Dolphins have a depth chart spot or two up for grabs at running back, so this is something to monitor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Helm was one of Giants #6 pick Daniel Jones's favorite targets and he is athletic enough to hang as a receiving tight end. He could be in the team's future as a second or third tight end.

PHI - Miles Sanders the top back in Philly?

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders 'has a chance to emerge as the most valuable piece' of the Philadelphia backfield, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Source: The Athletic - Jeff Schultz

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones' agent has been talking with the Falcons about a contract extension for Jones, and general manager Thomas Dimitroff said he is very encouraged with the talks. Dimitroff said there is no timetable for an agreement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounded like the two sides were making headway towards an agreement earlier in the offseason, so expect this to get done before the season. Jones is still playing at a very high level and should become one of the five highest paid players at his position.

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (groin) will be a full participant at the start of training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a great sign for his 2019 value. He has dealt with a myriad of injuries over the last two years and it has been fair to wonder if he'll be his old self again. If he can make it through an entire camp and preseason with full participation, Freeman will be a lot more attractive as your RB2.

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery could become a 'three-down back' for the offense, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com.

Montgomery has three-down skills but so does Mike Davis and Tarik Cohen is one of the most dangerous receiving backs in the league. For now this is a committee, but if Montgomery impresses, he could clarify the situation in his favor over the course of his rookie contract.

HOU - Best to come from QB Deshaun Watson?

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson will 'always make a jump' in performance, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'I've always said that I don't think there's any ceiling on Deshaun Watson,' O'Brien said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson has been doing his thing behind maybe the worst offensive line in the league. The team invested a first and second round pick in the line this year, but it could take time for those picks to pay dividends. Watson could also benefit from a full year of good health from Will Fuller and Keke Coutee.

Newton just turned 30 so this is an apt comment. It's both good and bad news for fantasy as he's going to continue to put his body at risk to gain yards and fantasy points on the ground, but he'll also be prone to taking hits on the shoulder that let him down and had to be surgically repaired again this offseason.

DAL - Mike Weber to undergo MRI

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Weber could be the first injury casualty of the rookie class. He had a chance to be the primary backup to fellow Buckeye Ezekiel Elliott.
