LAR - RB Todd Gurley could sit finale
Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) could miss the season finale in Week 17. The Rams need a win to secure home-field advantage.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The 49ers are coming up for the Rams in the regular season finale. Gurley missed Week 16 against the Cardinals and his backup, the newly acquired C.J. Anderson, rushed for 167 yards and one touchdown. Anderson is a seasoned veteran and could easily be relied on again if the team wants Gurley to get some more rest before the playoffs.
IND - TE Eric Ebron in protocol
Source: 1070 The Fan - Kevin Bowen
Indianapolis Colts TE Eric Ebron (concussion) is going through the concussion protocol and his status for Week 17 is uncertain, according to head coach Frank Reich.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll have to see if Ebron can get cleared from the protocol at some point during the week of practice. The Colts travel to play the Titans in Week 17.
NYJ - WR Jermaine Kearse undergoing tests
Source: New York Post - Brian Costello
New York Jets WR Jermaine Kearse (Achilles') suffered an Achilles' tendon injury in Week 16 and is undergoing tests.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We don't think Kearse plays again this season. With a week to go, the Jets may just shut down the soon-to-be free agent.
PHI - WR Mike Wallace returns from IR
Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Philadelphia Eagles WR Mike Wallace (leg) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 24. Additionally, CB Josh Hawkins is being promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Wallace could actually play a role for the Eagles in Week 17. His deep speed is a welcome asset for the offense as Wallace could take the top off the defense while clearing out space underneath.
SEA - Pete Carroll signs extension
Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll signed a multi-year contract extension through the 2021 season Monday, Dec. 24.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Carroll just keeps getting Seattle to the postseason. He's been there as the head coach since 2010 and have reached the playoffs in seven of those seasons. This year, Seattle is on a roll with another postseason trip looming.
ATL - RB Tevin Coleman should play
Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Kelsey Conway
Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (groin) has a good chance to play in the season finale despite suffering a strained groin in Week 16, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coleman could be somewhat limited by this injury during the week of practice. The Falcons have Brian Hill to get carries if Coleman is down. Hill might work into the mix anyway due to his 100-yard rushing performance on Sunday.
SF - RB Matt Breida to sit out season finale
Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco
San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) will not play in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Breida has been bothered by this ankle injury for some time. Without Breida, the 49ers turn to Jeffrey Wilson Jr. in the season finale against the Rams in Week 17
PHI - TE Zach Ertz in record book
Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank
Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz beat former Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten's single-season receptions record in Week 16. Ertz has 113 catches with one game left, besting Witten's 110 catches in 2012.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The tight end position has been brutal for Fantasy GMs in 2018 but Ertz was a rock star. He's a centerpiece of the Eagles offense and should continue as that in 2019.
SEA - RB Rashaad Penny likely back for season finale
Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
Seattle Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny (knee) should come 'roaring back' in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Penny hasn't played since Week 14 against the Vikings. The rookie first-round pick out of San Diego State was supposed to be the lead back for Seattle but that didn't happen. Instead, Chris Carson took the job and ran for over 1,000 yards so far with a game to go. Penny has dynasty value but it's not as high as it once was.
CLE - RB Nick Chubb eyeing unique achievement
Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports
Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb needs 28 rushing yards to become the second rookie running back in NFL history to achieve 1,000 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns on fewer than 200 carries. After Week 17, Chubb will have started in only nine games.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Browns began the season with Carlos Hyde as their lead back. He was traded away and Chubb took over in a big way. The second-round pick out of Georgia has great instincts for running the ball that are on display every week for the Browns.
PHI - QB Nick Foles officially starting
Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will officially start Week 17, according to head coach Doug Pederson. Pederson added that QB Carson Wentz (back) will start when healthy.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No surprise here. The Eagles have not yet shut down Wentz for the season but we'd be shocked to see him out there again this year. They have not yet been eliminated from the postseason. They'll clinch a wild-card spot if they win in Week 17 against Washington and the Vikings lose.
LAC - RB Austin Ekeler due back for season finale
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler (neck) is expected to return from a two-week absence and play in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for Ekeler and the Chargers offense. Ekeler will serve as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon.
HOU - RB Lamar Miller has shot to play Week 17
Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson
Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) is 'trending upwards' and has 'a chance' to play in Week 17 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Miller doesn't need to shake off the rust before the Texans make a postseason run. They might decide to give him another week of rest. That means Alfred Blue and D'Onta Foreman could get more action if Miller sits out the regular season finale.
NYG - QB Eli Manning set to start Week 17
Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano
New York Giants QB Eli Manning will make the start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17, according to head coach Pat Shurmur.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Giants don't have any other choice really. Rookie Kyle Lauletta has been inactive the last couple of weeks and they're not going to be in a trick shot competition ...as that's the only way backup Alex Tanney would be viable as a starter (seriously, look up his trick shots on YouTube).
MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill to start season finale
Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill will get the start in Week 17, according to head coach Adam Gase.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We expect some changes to be made with the Dolphins during the offseason. They have to decide if they want to move forward with Gase as their head coach and Tannehill as their quarterback. There had been speculation the Dolphins would give David Fales a start in the season finale with the team eliminated from the playoffs.
CAR - RB Christian McCaffrey could rest Week 17
Source: Panthers.com - Bill Voth
Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey is a candidate to sit out Week 17 versus the New Orleans Saints, as head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Monday, Dec. 24, that his team needs 'to be smart' and could use the time 'to evaluate' younger players.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There's no need to get McCaffrey more of a beating in a meaningless Week 17 game for the Panthers. McCaffrey has set the record (106) for the most receptions by a running back in a single season. He is 155 receiving yards away from being only the third member (Roger Craig, Marshall Faulk) of the 1,000/1,000 club (1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season). We don't think the Panthers will be careless with their superstar back.
TEN - QB Marcus Mariota feeling better
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (neck) said he is feeling better than he previously did after his stinger.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for Mariota but it doesn't mean he's going to play in the regular season finale. We'll know more about his status later in the week. If the Titans win against Indianapolis in Week 17 they're in the playoffs, either as the AFC South champion (if the Texans lose) or as the sixth seed.
WAS - QB Colt McCoy ruled out
Source: The Washington Post - Kareem Copeland
Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (leg) won't play in Week 17, according to head coach Jay Gruden.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Josh Johnson will continue as Washington's starter. McCoy is under contract through the 2019 season and should be good to go for offseason work.
WAS - TE Jordan Reed likely done
Source: The Washington Post - Kareem Copeland
Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (foot, ankle) is unlikely to play in Week 17, and head coach Jay Gruden said Reed wasn't close to being able to play in Week 16.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Reed has never played a 16-game season during his pro career. This year, Reed has made it through 13 games and it looks like that will be it. He has 54 catches for 558 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns in 2018. Reed is under contract through the 2021 season.
NYJ - WR Quincy Enunwa likely out again
Source: The Associated Press - Dennis Waszak Jr.
New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa (ankle) has a 'slim chance' of playing in Week 17, according to head coach Todd Bowles.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Enunwa missed all of the 2017 season and has made it through only 11 games so far this season. He's got 38 catches for 449 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. We don't think he plays in Week 17.
HOU - WR Demaryius Thomas done for 2018
Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson
Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' in Week 16 versus the Philadelphia Eagles and will miss the remainder of the season.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Texans added Thomas before the trade deadline and he made some plays here and there. The veteran receiver is under contract through the 2019 season but he has a $14 million cap number in 2019 with zero in dead money. We doubt he plays for that number, so expect the Texans to release him or renegotiate the deal to lower his cap hit.
SF - WR Dante Pettis to miss Week 17
Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco
Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Dante Pettis (knee) has been diagnosed with a medial collateral ligament injury and will not play in Week 17 . He will not require surgery, however.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The 49ers know that Pettis can be a part of their young WR corps of the future. Pettis showed off his trademark speed this year and made some downfield plays for the team. With QB Jimmy Garoppolo healthy next season, Pettis should become one of his primary targets when in need of a big play.
