NFL Player News - Week of 4/30/18

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

BAL - Baltimore to take it slow with Lamar Jackson

    Source: NFL.com - Jim Trotter

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson will face 'no urgency' in regards of being rushed into the starting lineup, according to NFL.com's Jim Trotter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson has everyone excited, landing in a good organization that should set him up to succeed with the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that oversaw Michael Vick's rebirth in Philadelphia. He should add more fantasy value with his legs than any quarterback in the league.

BUF - Buffalo will not rush Josh Allen

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen will not be rushed but will start as a rookie if he wins the starting job during training camp, according to general manager Brandon Beane.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen has a lot of physical advantages over AJ McCarron, and both will be learning Brian Daboll's offense for the first time. With an underwhelming group of receivers and three new starters on the line, it won't be wise to expect much from the Bills quarterback, whoever it is.

MIA - Jason Sanders will not be handed job

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins PK Jason Sanders is expected to compete with another kicker during training camp, according to vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins didn't have a kicker going into the draft. Sanders should be the favorite to win the job, but if he falters in camp and the preseason, he could yield to competition or the team could sign a kicker who is released at final cutdowns.

HOU - Keke Coutee could contribute right away

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee is expected to compete with WR Braxton Miller for the slot receiver job during training camp. He is also expected to be used as a kick returner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coutee has much better deep speed than Miller and he can provide a better threat to take the kickoff the distance. When he's on the field at the same time as Will Fuller, safeties will have trouble guarding the deep zone.

BAL - Jaleel Scott may be red zone target

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Jaleel Scott is expected to compete for the No. 4 receiver job and could also be a red zone target because of his size.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens signed Willie Snead, Michael Crabtree, and John Brown this year, but it's possible that none are on the roster two years from now. Scott is more skilled than the typical big receiver and that's why he was drafted earlier than most of his big wide receiver peers this year.

BUF - Austin Proehl to work in slot

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Austin Proehl will be used as a slot receiver, according to general manager Brandon Beane.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Proehl shares the Panthers bloodline with Sean McDermott, as the Bills head coach worked with his dad. He was a nondescript prospect at North Carolina before breaking his collarbone. He has an uphill battle to make the team even with a bottom-end receiver group on the depth chart.

ATL - Calvin Ridley could return kickoffs and punts

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

The Atlanta Falcons could experiment with using WR Calvin Ridley as a kickoff returner and punt returner at the team's rookie camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn. Ridley returned just two punts for four yards at Alabama and did not return any kickoffs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ridley has good speed and he's likely to start as the team's third receiver, so they might look for chances to manufacture more opportunities for him. Return yardage leagues should monitor this development.

It sounds as if some of these teams are already making excuses for their picks. All they talk about is the future, as in 2019.

    Tuesday Update

CLE - Intangibles separated Baker Mayfield

    Source: JReidDraftScout

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield's off-field intangibles gave him the edge in being viewed as the best quarterback in this year's class by the Browns, according to vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith Sr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Highsmith specifically noted Mayfield's intelligence, competitiveness and efficacy as favorable traits. Mayfield is certainly an alpha male and believes he's the one who can turn things around for the Browns. It's going to be interesting to watch and see if Mayfield can start from day one. He should as he has the accuracy and ability to do so, but the Browns may begin this season with Tyrod Taylor as their starter. Stay tuned...and pay close attention to which WRs Mayfield seems to form the strongest bond with leading up to the regular season.

WAS - Derrius Guice expected to start

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Derrius Guice is expected to start for the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Guice is immediately the most talented running back in Washington's room. The buzz is Guice fell in the draft due to concerns about his motivation. Advantage; Washington, who now upgrades the position if they can keep Guice on the right track. They'll still use Chris Thompson as a change-of-pace back, and now Samaje Perine goes to the bench as a reserve player behind Guice.

DET - Kerryon Johnson's durability no concern

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson's durability is not a concern, according to general manager Bob Quinn. 'He'll hold up,' Quinn said. 'So we feel really good about that. There's no issues with his durability for us.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson has an angular build at 6' 213 pounds, and he doesn't shy away from contact. His build, combined with his running style is a cause for concern to some. NFL.com's Lance Zierlein compares Johnson's skill set to that of Tevin Coleman. It will be interesting to see how the Lions create touches for a backfield that includes Johnson, LeGarrette Blount, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor's option picked up

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor's fifth-year option was exercised Monday, April 30, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Agholor had yet to play up to his potential as a first-round pick until 2017. Expect the Eagles to try to sign him to a long-term deal if he continues his solid play.

HOU - RB Alfred Blue contract update

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue's one-year contract is worth $880,000.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans didn't get a back in the 2018 NFL draft (a deep and talented class), so they decided to bring back Blue. He'll serve as the third-string back behind Lamar Miller and D'Onta Foreman (when healthy).

JAX - WR Jaelen Strong released

    Source: FirstCoastNews.com - Mike Kaye

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jaelen Strong was released Monday, April 30, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A third-round pick of the Texans in 2015, injuries and inconsistencies have derailed Strong's pro career. He's just never played up to his physical potential and is running out of chances to prove himself at the pro level. Strong is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last December with the Jaguars and his status for the start of the regular season is in question.

DAL - Dallas worked out RB Lance Dunbar

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Free-agent RB Lance Dunbar (Rams) recently worked out for the Dallas Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Undrafted out of North Texas in 2012, Dunbar spent most of his career with the Cowboys-- bouncing on and off the roster. He spent one year with the Rams (2017) and now finds himself looking for work. The Cowboys are likely just updating their emergency list.

NO - J.T. Barrett invited to Saints camp

    Source: Twitter

Undrafted free-agent QB J.T. Barrett (Ohio State) will attend the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barrett is going to be there on a tryout basis. He showed well at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year, but his limitations as a passer prevented him from getting more than a rookie camp invite. We'll see if he can impress enough as a quarterback -- or an athlete -- to get a spot on the Saints for minicamp and OTAs.

BUF - WR Kelvin Benjamin talks on hold

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin won't have contract talks on an extension until at least the summer, according to general manager Brandon Beane.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills have to see how Benjamin fits into the new offense. Benjamin also needs to show them he will have the ability to stay healthy and make a larger impact in 2018.

IND - Nyheim Hines a dual threat

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts RB Nyheim Hines has a unique skill set that should enable him to be a factor in the offense as both a runner and receiver. Hines played two years of receiver in college before moving to the backfield after a logjam cleared. Hines said multiple teams discussed drafting him and making him a permanent slot receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hines was a dual threat in college who can line up in the backfield, in the slot or out wide. It will be interesting to see how and where the Colts play him on the field. Hines has the speed to take it the distance any time he touches the ball.

    Wednesday Update

NYJ - QB Teddy Bridgewater throwing

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) is healthy and was throwing during phase 2 of the Jets' offseason program Tuesday, May 1, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with the Jets, and with the selection of Sam Darnold in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft we know Bridgewater is no long-term solution in New York. Perhaps there will be an injury in training camp, giving the opportunity for Bridgewater to be traded somewhere he can play. Josh McCown should begin the season and if/when he gets hurt we should see Darnold as the Jets starter as he is their QB of the future.

NE - NE considered moving up for Baker Mayfield?

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

The New England Patriots reportedly were interested enough in University of Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield to pull off a trade with the New York Giants for the No. 2 overall pick prior to the start of the NFL Draft if he fell past the Cleveland Browns at No. 1, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mayfield's agent Tom Mills said that in an interview on Andrew Brandt's podcast. It's certainly interesting considering the Patriots winning ways and the aggressiveness Bill Belichick would've shown in finding a quarterback to groom behind Tom Brady. It's all moot now as Mayfield went No.1 overall to the Browns, but it's nice to think about what might have been. The Patriots added a quarterback in the seventh round of the draft, but we don't think LSU's Danny Etling is anything more than a camp arm.

IND - Steve Ishmael signed by Colts

    Source: Colts.com

Undrafted free-agent WR Steve Ishmael (Syracuse) was signed by the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ishmael just kept getting better as his college career with the Orange carried on. Last year, Ishmael led the ACC in receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,345). He plays with outstanding body control and a physical nature at 6'2" 210 pounds.

NO - J.T. Barrett contract update

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, the New Orleans Saints agreed to a three-year contract with undrafted free-agent QB J.T. Barrett on Tuesday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barrett is a dual-threat quarterback who may get a look at a different position. He's the fourth QB on the depth chart in New Orleans behind Drew Brees, Tom Savage and Taysom Hill.

IND - RB Matt Jones waived

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Indianapolis Colts RB Matt Jones was waived Tuesday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here, especially after the Colts selected both Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins in the 2018 NFL draft. Jones only had five carries for the Colts last year and he may find it difficult to latch on with a new team.

LAC - TE Hunter Henry recovered from injury

Source: Los Angeles Times - Dan Woike

Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry (abdomen) is healthy now from the lacerated kidney he sustained last year in Week 14, which cost him the remainder of the season. 'It's something where I can't push my rehab to try and get back on the field and something I can't play through because I kind of look at myself like, if it's an injury, I feel like I can play through it,' he said. 'I just kind of have that tough factor about me. But with something internal, it's hard. You can't play around with that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Chargers here. Henry is the clear TE1 for the Chargers, and he should put up plenty of points for fantasy owners as a TE1. He was present during the second phase of the club's offseason program Monday, April 30, running routes on the field with the first-string offense.

seems weird to me the patriots would want him. undersized and he had the best team around him with the the best o coordinator in a conference where every qb succeeds. he struggled to even be the starter at texas tech.

    Thursday Update

NFL - Interest in WR Dez Bryant not high

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Free-agent WR Dez Bryant (Cowboys) has more teams not willing to pay him the league minimum salary than teams who are willing to sign him to any deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's following along with the reports about teams in the NFC East being cool on the idea of signing Bryant. He's been on the open market for a few weeks with little interest generated. Bryant has already turned down a three-year, $21 million contract from the Baltimore Ravens.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman able to cut

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) is able to run and cut now in his rehab from ligament damage in his knee.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A sprained MCL and PCL late last year didn't require surgery, but it was a concern for Freeman heading into this season. It sounds like he's on track in his recovery.

NE - QB Tom Brady to play at least two years

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he 'negotiated' with his wife to play two more seasons, and he's working on more.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady wants to play into his mid-40s which would be another four years or so. It sounds like it's going to be two more seasons at least. Brady 'pleaded the fifth' when asked if he felt appreciated by the team. He then went on to say that even though Bill Belichick wasn't the easiest to get along with, he's the right coach for him. Drama aside, the Patriots should be in line to make another deep postseason run in 2018.

CHI - WR Kevin White's option not exercised

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White's fifth-year option will not be picked up, according to a source. White is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White's pro career has been set back in a major way by injury. A first-round pick in 2015, White has only played in five games as a pro. These injuries may have robbed him of the trademark speed he had in college at West Virginia years ago. White is healthy now and enters the Bears camp as the No.4 wideout.

OAK - Jon Gruden calling the shots

Source: Bleacher Report - Mike Freeman

Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has quietly consolidated power to the point where he's the head coach, general manager, CEO and just about everything else, according to a source. No other coach in the NFL has this kind of power outside of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is what happens when you sign a head coach to a $100 million contract. Gruden has control of the team, and GM Reggie McKenzie is either going to have to get used to it or move on.

PHI - WR Markus Wheaton signing with Eagles

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman

Free-agent WR Markus Wheaton (Bears) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wheaton has done little during his time in the NFL with the Bears and the Steelers. We don't imagine him making the 53-man roster for the Eagles, but he will get a chance for a fresh start (again) with the Super Bowl champs.

IND - RB Marlon Mack had torn labrum as rookie

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack (shoulder) played with a torn labrum in 2017, according to general manager Chris Ballard.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts reshaped their backfield this offseason, and Mack is going to face competition from rookies Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins. Mack underwent offseason shoulder surgery to repair the tear and expects to be fully healthy by training camp.

Rumor Control says that if the New York Jets do not show major improvement offensively before their bye week (week 10), Sam Darnell may be starting games after the bye week. The Jets first 10 games of the year are much easier than their last 6 games after their bye week. After the bye week they must play the Pats twice, go to Tennessee and Buffalo, and host Houston and Green Bay.

Not to mention the young TE Njoku, and RB Duke Johnson who is also a viable receiving option.

yes...also, the rest of the division is aging so it could be a perfect storm for them to own the division in a year or 2.

You guys are forgetting one crucial thing...it’s the Browns. Something will go wrong (injury, Gordon suspension, etc) and they will be lucky to win 4 games.

The number for the Browns in the over/under wagers is 5.5. The under is a rather safe bet. They get the NFC South and the AFC West. 0-8 is certainly possible there. They are not going to beat Atlanta or Carolina at home, or New Orleans on the road. Tampa at Tampa is very iffy. They get the Chargers and Denver at home, and go to Oakland and Kansas City. Good luck with that. If they split their other 8 games, you are looking at 4-12. Even if they manage to upset someone in the NFC South or AFC West, they still only have 5 games. I will give them a split with Cincinnati, maybe a win at home on Thursday Night against the Jets, and perhaps another home win, but I can't see any other wins.

    Friday Update

DAL - TE Jason Witten to retire

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten has informed the team he'll retire Thursday, May 3, and join ESPN as an analyst on Monday Night Football.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hats off to a great player. He'll be missed. We wish him all the best in his next chapter of life.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan agrees to extension

    Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Falcons Thursday, May 3, that will make him the first quarterback to make $30 million per season, according to sources. The deal includes $100 million in guaranteed money.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, that was expensive, but after Kirk Cousins got his money, also expected. The Packers now face the same situation with Aaron Rodgers. As for the Falcons, the way they have structured the deal will impact the rest of the team -- after all, there's only so much money to go around. For fantasy owners, Ryan has new weapons around him (hello WR Calvin Ridley!) and should post his usual QB1 numbers in 2018.

NYJ - Sam Darnold to start opener?

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

The New York Jets believe QB Sam Darnold has a great chance to be the starter for Week 1 of the 2018 season. Darnold will compete with QB Josh McCown for the starting job during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's all going to come down to how quickly he gets the playbook under control. We think it would be better if he got some time to adjust to the pro game and cleaned up some of his mechanics, but the Jets won't hold him back if the rookie is ready.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers deal imminent?

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are expected to agree on a new deal soon, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers said they were waiting on the Matt Ryan deal which just got done on Thursday (six-year, $169.25 million contract through 2023). Rodgers should be 100 percent healthy, but the team has lost a few key pieces on offense, so we will have to see how he and they adjust.

DAL - DAL likes Blake Jarwin

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys TE Blake Jarwin is the tight end that has received the most praise recently from executive vice president Stephen Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys need to find a solution at tight end with Jason Witten gone. Expect a lot of high praise about a lot of tight ends on the roster while they sort it out.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman not shopped to other teams

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman did not appear to be on the trading block during the 2018 NFL Draft, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns can't depend on Josh Gordon and rookie Anthonio Calloway has his own off-field issues, so that's no surprise. Jarvis Landry can't do it all himself, so the Browns could use a guy like Coleman to come through at the WR position. Coleman is getting overlooked by fantasy GMs and shouldn't be. He's one of those WRs you can take a last-round flier on based on his current ADP.

DET - High expectations for WR Kenny Golladay

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay has the ability to do some 'special things' in his second year in the NFL, according to offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. Cooter admitted that Golladay needs to get better but gave the young receiver credit for working hard and moving in the right direction. 'We look forward to him being a big part of our offense next year.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a few players in front of him, and we spent a lot of last year expecting those special things from him with inconsistent results. We're cautiously optimistic, emphasis on cautious. With 28 catches last year as a rookie, it's not outlandish to think Golladay could post around 50 catches during his second season. We like him as a late-round flier at his current ADP of WR60 (13.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYJ - QB Bryce Petty done with Jets

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty is being released Thursday, May 3, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No great shock, and likely the first of two moves, with Christian Hackenberg getting his walking papers soon too. It could also be a sign that Teddy Bridgewater has come along and is mended or close to it.

DAL - TE Rico Gathers needs to improve blocking

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers needs to improve as a blocker to see regular playing time, in the opinion of beat writer Jon Machota.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jason Witten could do a little of everything, so it will take multiple players to fill his shoes. Gathers isn't a good blocker and has a lot of work to do.

    Saturday Update

MIA - Miami adds QB Bryce Petty

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

The Miami Dolphins claimed QB Bryce Petty off waivers from the New York Jets Friday, May 4, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was quick. Petty was released by the Jets on Thursday but lands with another AFC East team on Friday. He'll compete with David Fales to be the third-string quarterback behind starter Ryan Tannehill and veteran backup Brock Osweiler.

ARI - Elijhaa Penny to assume utility role

    Source: Mike Jurecki

Arizona Cardinals RB Elijhaa Penny is reportedly making the transition from backup running back to a role in which he will play some fullback, H-back and tight end while maintaining his usual special teams duties.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals are changing things up in the backfield behind starter David Johnson, and fantasy owners who love to handcuff need to take notice. We expect rookie fourth-round pick Chase Edmonds to be the primary backup behind Johnson in 2018. Penny may have a difficult time transitioning to more of a blocking role at 235 pounds.

DAL - Committee approach at tight end

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to use some combination of TEs Dalton Schultz, Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers as a committee to fill the void left behind by the retired Jason Witten, according to the Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That makes sense, and it sounds like a situation fantasy owners should be avoiding in 2018. We like Schultz to eventually emerge as the top target at the position, but rookie TEs usually take some time to acclimate to the pros. Monitor this situation but don't get too excited by this group essentially vulturing points from each other on a weekly basis.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan getting paid in 2018

    Source: Spotrac.com

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan will make $52.5 million in 2018, due in large part, to a $46.5 million signing bonus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan will become the first NFL quarterback to cross the $30 million annually threshold. Don't be too shocked, this is going to be the norm for franchise quarterbacks going forward. The Falcons have helped him greatly this offseason by adding top WR Calvin Ridley in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft.

PHI - RB Darren Sproles terms

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles received a one-year, $1.415 million deal with $1 million guaranteed and a $400,000 signing bonus. He can earn a maximum of $1.433 million with incentives.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles brought back Sproles on April 28th, but the terms were unknown until now. Jay Ajayi will be the lead back for the Eagles, but Sproles and Corey Clement should get time as pass-catchers or change-of-pace backs out of the backfield in 2018. Sproles used to have flex value in PPR leagues but splitting time/touches with Clement might put him more in the 'what the heck' flex category (if that) for fantasy owners.

NE - RB Jeremy Hill finally healthy

Source: The Providence Journal - Mark Daniels

New England Patriots RB Jeremy Hill said he is finally feeling like himself again after having ankle surgery last season. 'I really didn't have the flexibility and the strength in it that I needed to be the back that I wanted to be,' Hill said. 'I'm glad that I got it done and I can get it back to 100 percent and be the back I know I can be.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's been quite some time since Hill was a 1,000-yard rusher (rookie season in 2014) and an effective back in the pros. He's struggled to gain much positive yardage on a per-carry basis over the last three years, and in 2017 Hill only had 37 carries even though he started seven games before getting hurt. The Patriots use a RBBC and Hill could be the red-zone option for them...and that does have a bit of fantasy value. We'll see how this committee shakes out during camp.

TB - Ronald Jones adds new element

    Source: NFL Network

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones adds 'juice' that the backfield has been lacking, according to general manager Jason Licht.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is a big play waiting to happen. He wore 25 at USC in honor of Jamaal Charles, the back he patterns his game after. Like a young Charles, Jones has speed to burn and is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. Jones should bring plenty of 'juice' to the Bucs backfield, and we expect him to take over as the lead back at some point during his rookie season.

ARI - Bigger role for Ricky Seals-Jones?

Source: FOX Sports Radio 910 - Mike Jurecki

Arizona Cardinals TE Ricky Seals-Jones said he likes the new system offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has installed, and Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports Radio 910 expects Seals-Jones to have an expanded role in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy has been known to create TE-friendly offenses during his time in the NFL (see Chargers), so it will be interesting to see what he does in Arizona. Seals-Jones is an under-the-radar prospect for fantasy owners who could have TE2 production in 2018.

NYJ - Chris Herndon getting some work in

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets TE Chris Herndon (knee), who is coming off an MCL injury, participated in individual drills Friday, May 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Herndon is an interesting name to monitor in TE-premium dynasty leagues. He injured his knee during his final college game for the Miami Hurricanes in the regular season finale and did not get to test during the pre-draft process. He's a raw player as a blocker and receiver, but there's a bit of Delanie Walker to his game. With the Jets poor TE situation, the rookie could see more playing time than some think.

NYJ - QB Christian Hackenberg reworking delivery

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg has been working with quarterback coach Jeff Christensen this offseason in an attempt to rework his throwing motion.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets are now stacked at the quarterback position and Hackenberg is fourth on the depth chart at best. Josh McCown may begin the season as the starter while rookie Sam Darnold is clearly the franchise quarterback of the future. Behind those two is Teddy Bridgewater, and who knows if he'll be traded away later this year or not as he's only on a one-year deal and clearly not part of the long-term picture. Hackenberg has not yet seen the field in two years as a pro.

    Sunday Update

NYJ - QB Teddy Bridgewater expected on field soon

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) is expected to be on the field for offseason workouts in a few weeks, according head coach Todd Bowles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Bridgewater as he's trying to impress his new team. Bridgewater is only on a one-year deal, and the Jets selected QB Sam Darnold with the no.3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The writing is on the wall that he's no long-term answer for the Jets. However, Bridgewater could be dealt to another team in need of a starting-caliber QB...or he could just hit the open market ready to prove himself in 2019.

BAL - Coach happy with Lamar Jackson

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has been impressive with his accuracy and smarts during the rookie minicamp, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is better from the pocket than many think. The Ravens are looking for a quarterback to groom behind Joe Flacco, and that's why they moved back into the first round to select Jackson no.32 overall. Jackson is a threat to run and is likely the most dynamic player in the league...and he hasn't even taken a regular season snap yet. It will be interesting to see his development, and from a fantasy lens he has QB1 potential in the future.

CLE - QB Tyrod Taylor still starter

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Tyrod Taylor is still the team's starting quarterback even though they selected QB Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Saying 'for now' would be best for Jackson and the Browns. Mayfield is an intense competitor and he can start from day one. We'll see how quickly he acclimates to the pro game, but it wouldn't be a shock to see him beat out Taylor for the starting job in Week 1.

NYJ - Sam Darnold uneven in first practice

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold had some throws where he needed to 'dust the rust off' in his first practice Friday, May 4, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's to be expected from a rookie quarterback, especially one who is far from a finished product like Darnold. While there's a chance he starts Week 1, we think Josh McCown could begin the season at the top of the depth chart with a plan to have Darnold take over eventually.

CLE - Antonio Callaway injury update

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns WR Antonio Callaway (toe) suffered a toe injury during practice Saturday, May 5. The severity of the injury is uncertain at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cleveland is already hurting with first-round pick Denzel Ward battling a hip injury. Callaway is a pure speed wide receiver who doesn't lose much speed when making breaks on his routes. A toe injury could certainly hamper a guy with that skill set. The Browns will be wisely cautious moving forward.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee to be on bubble

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee will have to win a spot on the 53-man roster during training camp because there would be no dead money on the salary cap if Gillislee is released.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots added Jeremy Hill this offseason in free agency and they selected Sony Michel in the 2018 NFL draft. Michel has the ability to be a lead back in the mold of LeSean McCoy. There may not be many touches to go around for Gillislee.
