NFL Player News - Week of 2/12/18

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Raiders | Oakland eyeing Jarvis Landry?
Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr formed a connection with Miami Dolphins impending free-agent WR Jarvis Landry at the Pro Bowl, and Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com believes head coach Jon Gruden could push the front office to pursue Landry.

Jaguars | Competition for Blake Bortles?
The Jacksonville Jaguars could select a quarterback in the first or second round of the 2018 NFL Draft to provide competition for QB Blake Bortles, according Mike DiRocco of ESPN.com.

Bengals | AJ McCarron changing teams?
Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron could end up with another team in 2018, even if he loses his grievance and remains a restricted free agent, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. Even with a tender placed on him, Terrell believes a quarterback-needy team will pursue McCarron.

Buccaneers | DeSean Jackson wants chemistry with QB
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson said he and QB Jameis Winston need to 'merge' this offseason.

Colts | Frank Reich officially hired as head coach
Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich has officially been hired as the new Indianapolis Colts head coach.

Footballguys view: It's officially official. Reich is a good hire by the Colts given the late start they got due to Josh McDaniels backing out on them. The Eagles offense had to overcome a ton of obstacles this year on the way to a World Championship and Reich was there leading the way. He'll take over a team in need of a makeover on offense. If Andrew Luck (shoulder) is healthy, then Reich will be ahead of the curve.

Packers | Trevor Davis may see more snaps
Green Bay Packers WR Trevor Davis should have a bigger role as a receiver next season, in the opinion of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Michael Cohen.

Footballguys view: He's emerged as their best return man, but Davis is buried on the depth chart at wide receiver. Davis did get 55 snaps on offense over the last two games of the regular season, catching three passes for 56 yards (all in Week 17). He's an explosive player with the ball in his hands, but injuries would have to hit in front of him on the depth chart for Davis to play a fantasy relevant role.

Packers | Aaron Jones looking to strengthen legs
Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones will work on strengthening his legs this offseason so he can hopefully avoid medial collateral ligament tears, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans.

    Tuesday Update

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald's salary guaranteed
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's $11 million salary became guaranteed on Friday, Feb. 9. However, this does not impact his retirement decision. If he chooses to retire, he would not receive that money.

NFL | Johnny Manziel working on comeback
Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said in an interview with 'Good Morning America' that aired on Monday, Feb. 12, that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 'about a year ago' and has been taking medication for it. He has stopped drinking and said his goal is to make it back to the NFL. Manziel added that he's been working out and trying to convince a team to give him a second chance. 'I don't know what kind of comeback it will be,' he said. 'But I know I want to get back on a football field to what brought me so much joy in my life and it makes me happy doing as my job.'

Colts | Nick Sirianni tabbed as Indy's new OC
Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers coach Nick Sirianni was named as the new offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts on Monday, Feb. 12, according to a source.

Buccaneers | No talks ongoing for Mike Evans
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans and the Buccaneers are not currently negotiating a new deal, according to Evans' agent. Evans' fifth-year option was picked up last year, so he will be earning $13.2 million in 2018. Both parties will evaluate Evans' contract when the time comes, but for now he's going to focus on playing out his current deal, his agent added.
Footballguys view: Evans should get a big contract from the Buccaneers at the right time. They could get a deal done before the start - or early on - in the 2018 season. His numbers were down in 2017 with a career low in yards (1,001) and yards per reception (14.1), but that was primarily due to QB Jameis Winston being banged up (shoulder) and struggling to play with the injury. With a healthy Winston, Evans should be in for a bounce-back season.

Bills | Less shotgun for LeSean McCoy

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy saw a career-low in percentage of carries from the shotgun formation last season (17%). Interestingly, that percentage has decreased in each of his last five years. Furthermore, his yards per carry and yards after contact were also the lowest of his nine-year career.
Footballguys view: We'll see if the Bills offense continues this trend in 2018. The Bills hired Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to take over after moving on from their 2017 OC Rick Dennison.

His days at Jacksonville are obviously numbered, Jags don't feel he is worth his contract.

    Wednesday Update

Packers | Ty Montgomery could move back to WR
Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery could move back to wide receiver, according to beat writer Rob Demovsky.

Colts | Andrew Luck meets with experts
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) has met with throwing experts in California as part of his rehabilitation process, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Nobody really knows where Luck is at in his recovery, but reports indicate he's progressing in a positive direction. Luck has not begun throwing yet, but he does appear to be close to making that next step in his recovery from a torn labrum.

Colts | Indianapolis will have up-tempo offense
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck and company will implement a strong element of no huddle into their offensive game plans, according to new head coach Frank Reich. 'We want to impose our will on the opponent,' Reich said.
Footballguys view: Reich knows all about the up-tempo offense. Dating back to his days backing up Jim Kelly in the Bills K-Gun offense, Reich has been innovative as a designer of offense. Provided that Andrew Luck is healthy, we're excited about the Colts offense with Reich leading the way.

Cardinals | Arizona will be aggressive in QB search
Arizona Cardinals QBs Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton will likely be competing with another quarterback this offseason for the starting quarterback job. Team owner Michael Bidwill said the Cardinals will be aggressive in their search for a new starting quarterback following the retirement of QB Carson Palmer.
Footballguys view: The Cardinals may not be players in the free agent market. We don't see them going after potentially available guys like Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum. However, we do see the Cardinals moving up in the draft for a potential franchise quarterback. They currently have the 15th overall pick, but a move inside the top-10 for someone like Josh Allen (Wyoming) would not be a surprise.

Lions | Dion Lewis of interest to Lions?
New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Dion Lewis may be pursued by the Detroit Lions if he does enter free agency, according to The Boston Globe's Ben Volin.
Footballguys view: The Patriots connections abound in Detroit. New head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn both worked for the Patriots, so a guy like Lewis makes for an easy fit. The Lions have had difficulty drafting a good running back, and even though this is a great draft class at the position, they may choose to go the free agent route to find their lead ball-carrier for 2018.

    Thursday Update

Raiders | Jon Gruden wants to work with Marshawn Lynch
Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said that he doesn't know if RB Marshawn Lynch will be on the roster in the upcoming season, but added that 'right now, he's our leading ball-carrier, he's our back, and we're counting on him.' Gruden also mentioned: 'Hopefully we get an opportunity to work together.

Raiders | Giorgio Tavecchio expected to get offer
Oakland Raiders exclusive rights free-agent PK Giorgio Tavecchio is expected to receive a tender offer this offseason.

Raiders | Sebastian Janikowski unlikely to return
Oakland Raiders impending free-agent PK Sebastian Janikowski has been informed that the Raiders likely will not re-sign him this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Raiders in the 2000 NFL draft, Janikowski missed last year with a back injury. If Janikowski can prove that he's healthy, there should be teams interested in his services for the right price.

Jets | Jeremy Bates officially offensive coordinator
Former New York Jets quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates was officially promoted to offensive coordinator Wednesday, Feb. 14, as expected. Additionally, former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Rick Dennison was named the offensive line coach/running game coordinator and former Tennessee Titans assistant secondary coach Steve W. Jackson was named the assistant defensive backs coach.

    Friday Update

Titans | Marcus Mariota in exclusive company
Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota became the fifth quarterback in NFL history with at least 9,000 passing yards (9,476) and 900 rushing yards (913) in his first three seasons after his performance during the 2017 campaign.

Colts | Andrew Luck excited about new offense
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck said he is excited about the offense head coach Frank Reich is bringing to the team. 'That sounds great,' Luck said. 'I know all the best offenses that I've been a part of in my career we've not been static and we've attacked. And I'm sure he'll have a great flavor and we'll involve as many people as we can, and attacking defenses is what it's all about.'

Browns | Cleveland likely to pursue AJ McCarron
Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron is expected to receive interest from the Cleveland Browns in free agency, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot.

Eagles | Carson Wentz will not change style
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (knee) said he will not change his playing style even though he is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Seahawks | Eddie Lacy unlikely to return
Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent RB Eddie Lacy is not expected to re-sign with the Seahawks this offseason.

Footballguys view: Lacy was a pretty big disappointment this year and with Chris Carson looking so good before his injury, there's no point in keeping Lacy around.

Lions | DeMarco Murray an option for DET?

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray could be an option for the Detroit Lions if the Titans release him this offseason, in the opinion of The Detroit News' Justin Rogers.

Footballguys view: There's a good chance they will, as Derrick Henry looked good this year. Detroit has yet to find a permanent answer in the backfield, though they have been able to cobble together some pieces. We're not sure Murray is really going to be their answer, but if the price is right, it makes sense for them to try.

Bengals | AJ McCarron will be a UFA

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron has won his grievance and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: So far Cleveland is the hot destination rumor. It would certainly change a lot of things in the top portion of the draft if the Browns got their quarterback before round one kicks off. Even if McCarron is unproven, we hear at least Hue Jackson is a big fan.
