NFL Player News - Wild Card Week

Actually more COACHING news than player news for Monday

OAK - Jon Gruden to coach Oakland?

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

ESPN's Adam Schefter told Scott Van Pelt on the SVP show that he expected Jon Gruden to be the Raiders next coach.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It should be noted Schefter is not actually reporting this as if it's happened. He, like me, is connecting the dots and assuming the Raiders don't make the move with Del Rio unless they knew they were getting Jon Gruden. We'll hopefully see confirmation of this soon.

OAK - Jack Del Rio fired by Oakland

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

The Oakland Raiders fired head coach Jack Del Rio on Sunday, Dec. 31, after posting a 6-10 record in 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Is this a sign that they can get Jon Gruden? Del Rio presided over the resurrection of the franchise last year and not everything that went wrong this year was his fault. This will be a very interesting job to watch with Gruden's name already attached to it.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy injured

    Source: BuffaloBills.com

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (foot) suffered an apparent foot/ankle injury in the third quarter of the Week 17 game against the Miami Dolphins. He went down immediately after a short run and took off his helmet while writhing around on the ground.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills are making a push for the playoffs (UPDATE: Bills are IN the Playoffs, and play Sunday at Jacksonville) but they might have to play in the wild card round without the centerpiece of their offense. We'll know more Monday.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry scores before ejection

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry was ejected in the fourth quarter of the Week 17 game against the Buffalo Bills for his part in a fight. He had nine receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown before departing. Landry also set the franchise record with 112 receptions despite falling 14 yards short of 1,000 for the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Landry will be a marquee free agent, assuming the Dolphins don't franchise him. He could gain some value with a quarterback upgrade, but lose some if he goes to an offense where he won't be the #1 read. He's still likely to remain a WR2 in PPR leagues at the worst.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake ejected in Week 17

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake was ejected in the fourth quarter of the Week 17 game against the Buffalo Bills for his part in a fight. He ran 14 times for 75 yards while adding three catches for 15 yards before parting.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Drake has emerged as a true lead back even though the Dolphins have said they would prefer to not work him the way they did this December. They should go forward with Drake as the starter. No player gained more value in the second half of the season.

    IND - Chuck Pagano fired

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano was fired Sunday, Dec. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pagano and the Colts ended up bottoming out after his tenure was bright and inspiring at first. Without Andrew Luck, the team was barely competitive, and Pagano was unable to deliver. This was a long time coming.

CLE - Owners confirms Hue Jackson's return

Source: NFL Network - Aditi Kinkhabwala

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson will return to the team next season, according to owner Jimmy Haslam. Haslam said he told general manager John Dorsey that Jackson will be the head coach in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This move will be questioned because of how poorly the Browns have played under Jackson's guidance. DeShone Kizer's development was a misadventure and Jackson will now be trusted to oversee the rookie year of their likely first-round, if not #1 pick.

I thought I heard couple of weeks ago that he was already gone, not sure what happened between then and now.

    Tuesday Update

ARI - Bruce Arians to retire

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is expected to retire from coaching, according to league sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been writing on the wall for quite some time. Arians was dealing with different health issues as head coach and he seemed intent on moving on and parting ways mutually with the team. The Cardinals are in trouble as they may also be without guys like WR Larry Fitzgerald and QB Carson Palmer going forward without Arians.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy won't be 100 percent

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) is unlikely to be 100 percent in next week's Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The extra day with the Sunday game helps, but he's still likely to be gimpy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy was carted off the field in Week 17, but the X-rays on his ankle came back negative. He'll be limited (or out) of practice for the duration of the week to get him as close to full strength as possible. McCoy is the centerpiece of the team's offense, but with McCoy banged up (and against a tough opponent) it's going to be a challenge for the Bills.

GB - Ted Thompson no longer GM

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson is expected to be receive a new role in the organization and will no longer be the general manager, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson has been the GM of the Packers since 2005. He's been with the team almost fully since 1992 (he worked for the Seahawks from 2000-2004). There have been rumblings about Thompson taking a different position with the team for some time. The Packers now begin the search for his replacement.

IND - QB Andrew Luck will be back next year

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) will be back 'with a fierce fire in his eyes' in 2018, according to team owner Jim Irsay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Luck has been in Europe rehabbing his injured shoulder. There were earlier concerns that Luck would need another procedure on the injury, but those have subsided in recent weeks. We like that Irsay is positive but we'd like to see Luck look like his old self before proclaiming any sort of 'fire' when it comes to his game. He hasn't looked like himself when he was healthy as the constant beating he's taken with the Colts has changed his mechanics. We hope Luck can get back to looking like the generational quarterback he was coming out of Stanford.

DEN - Vance Joseph will return

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph will return for the 2018 season, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There were rumblings that the Broncos were ready to move on from Joseph after just one year, but something changed in their outlook. The players lobbied to keep Joseph according to rumblings around the team, and the Broncos may have not been able to get a coach they'd consider an upgrade (Jay Gruden, etc) over Joseph. We'll see if they can fix the offense by finding a quarterback and upgrading the blockers in front of him. That would go a long way to getting the Broncos back in the playoff conversation.

IND - Indy interested in Josh McDaniels

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been requested for an interview by the Indianapolis Colts for their head coaching vacancy, according to a league source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McDaniels would bring excitement to a Colts offense that needs it...and a better offensive line...and a better rushing attack...and oh yeah, QB Andrew Luck needs to be healthy. As you can see, one coach is not going to clean up all the problems the Colts have.

    CHI - John Fox fired

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox was fired Monday, Jan. 1, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here as this move has been expected for most of the year. Fox has coached the Bears for three seasons and finishes his time as head coach with a 14-34 record. For his career, Fox has a 141-130 record with a .520 win percentage. He's average as a head coach, but the Bears are the first team he's coached (Panthers, Broncos) that has failed to make a deep postseason run. Fox can be pegged by a team in need of a veteran coach.

    DET - Jim Caldwell fired

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

The Detroit Lions have fired head coach Jim Caldwell after four seasons, per team sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The move was expected with the Lions out of the playoffs. There is buzz building that the team is looking at Jim Schwartz (Eagles) as their next head coach, but they are going to interview others including but not limited to Matt Patricia (Patriots). In four seasons as the Lions top man, Caldwell has a 36-28 record with two playoff berths. The veteran coach should land another gig quickly, even if that means he has to go back to being an offensive coordinator.

DAL - Coordinators on hot seat

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan are on the hot seat and will be thoroughly evaluated, according to team sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things fell apart with the Cowboys this year, on both sides of the ball. The Cowboys will be at home during the postseason and they could clean up the coordinator side to inject some different energy.

CIN - Marvin Lewis wants to come back

    Source: NFL.com - Jeremy Bergman

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters following the Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens that he would like to come back as coach in 2018, but nothing has been finalized.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals were rumored to be interested in getting Jay Gruden back from Washington. They're likely to finally go in a different direction at the head coaching position, but there has also been rumblings that Lewis could stay in some front office role. Lewis' contract expired following the conclusion of the season, and there had been talk that Lewis might leave the job on his own.

MIA - Miami will retain Adam Gase

Source: The Associated Press - Steven Wine

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase will be remain with the team in 2018, owner Stephen Ross said Sunday, Dec. 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gase gets another chance to make it work in 2018. He led the team to the playoffs (for the first time in eight years) in 2016, but once QB Ryan Tannehill was lost for the year with a knee injury their 2017 season went off the rails. Tannehill is back next year and they'll make another run in a tough AFC East.

MIN - TE Kyle Rudolph spotted in walking boot

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle) played only 28 snaps in a Week 17 victory over the Chicago Bears and was in a walking boot after the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rudolph's ankle has been bothering him for a few weeks now. The Vikings have a bye so he's got time to get healthier.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart expected to 'be fine'

    Source: Panthers.com - Max Henson

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) sat out Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons, but head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Stewart is expected to 'be fine' for the team's wild-card weekend matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers have used a RBBC this year with both Stewart and rookie Christian McCaffrey. Stewart averaged a career low 3.4 yards per carry in 2017 (he's been hampered by injuries) but was able to rush for over 100 yards in two games. His last big game was in Week 14 against the Vikings (103 yards and three touchdowns), but that was before this back injury flared up. He'll be ready for the game against the Saints, but we're not expecting much.

NYG - G-Men seek two Patriots for interviews

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have been sought for permission to interview for the New York Giants' head coaching vacancy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matt Patricia has been getting head coaching interviews for some time now. This seems like the year he may finally get that top gig. McDaniels was always thought of as a guy in line to take over for Bill Belichick when he was done with the Patriots. That still might be the case with McDaniels but it won't prevent other teams from pursuing him.

DET - Matt Patricia to interview with Lions

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is expected to interview for the Detroit Lions' head coaching vacancy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions are on the hunt for a new head coach with Jim Caldwell getting fired. Patricia has ties to the Lions as their GM Bob Quinn spent some time with Patricia in New England. We've seen Patricia interview for several head coaching jobs and this year it feels like he should get one.

LAC - TE Antonio Gates wants to play in 2018

Source: Los Angeles Daily News - Jack Wang

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates will be a free agent after the season, but he said he still has 'the juice' and would like to play in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The future Hall of Fame tight end turns 38 years old next summer, and he'd look awkward playing for another team. Hunter Henry is set to be the lead tight end for the Chargers going forward, but if Gates came back for a good price he could continue to work as a reserve player.

NFL - Saquon Barkley to enter draft

    Source: ESPN.com

Penn State RB Saquon Barkley announced Sunday, Dec. 31, that he plans to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barkley is the best running back in the 2018 NFL draft...and this is a great class of RBs entering the league. His game blends size, power, strength and speed on the field as a three-down player. At 5'11" 230 pounds, Barkley reminds some in the scouting community of David Johnson (Cardinals). Barkley is certainly going to be a top-10 pick and is a player fantasy owners will be taking no1 overall in rookie drafts.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford to practice

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford (knee) will participate in practice this week, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was expected as Bradford is getting healthier. The Vikings have three weeks to activate Bradford from the Reserve/Injured list.

NYJ - QB Josh McCown could return

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown is a player the Jets would be interested in re-signing this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles. McCown still has not decided if he will continue his playing career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown is no spring chicken and there has been speculation that he's thinking about retirement. If he does want to keep playing football then the Jets make a lot of sense. He could serve as a bridge quarterback for any rookie the Jets select at the position. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are not the long-term answer, and we expect the Jets to make moves to add a young, potential franchise QB.

DEN - Three Denver coaches fired

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos special teams coordinator Brock Olivo, wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson were fired Monday, Jan. 1, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos struggled on offense and their special teams unit was one of the worst in the league. Olivo may find a D1 school interested in adding him as a head coach. Davidson had close ties to former Broncos OC Mike McCoy and may land wherever McCoy does in the future. Tolbert has been an NFL WRs coach since 2003 with stops in Arizona and Carolina before his time with the Broncos (2011-2017), and he should be able to find employment elsewhere in the league.

CHI - WR Cameron Meredith hopeful for training camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Cameron Meredith (knee) isn't sure he'll be able to participate during the offseason program this spring, but he expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Meredith suffered this injury in the team's third preseason game of 2017. Almost a full year removed from this injury, Meredith should be near full strength by the start of training camp barring any setbacks in his recovery.

DET - Pat Shurmur requested for DET interview

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has been requested for an interview with the Detroit Lions for their head coaching vacancy, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Through key injuries (Sam Bradford, Dalvin Cook), the Vikings have a top-10 scoring offense under Shurmur this year. He's got previous head coaching experience from his time with the Browns.

ARI - QB Drew Stanton update

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating an earlier report, Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (knee) has been playing with no anterior cruciate ligament for years, and no surgery is planned. Stanton knows how to manage the injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow. Stanton has always been known as a tough guy, but this takes the cake. With no surgery needed, Stanton will likely get some looks early in free agency for a team looking for veteran depth at the position.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald caps career year

    Source: ESPN.com

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald tied a career high with 109 receptions this season, topping 100 catches for the third straight season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzgerald signed a two-year contract extension a year ago and is on the books for $16 million in 2018 (with zero in dead money). There's no telling what his future holds as retirement is looming. With head coach Bruce Arians retiring, Fitzgerald may be done playing in the NFL. It's obvious he can still play at a high level, but the Cardinals now find themselves far away from making a championship run.

    Wednesday Update

ARI - QB Carson Palmer retiring

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer announced his retirement Tuesday, Jan. 2, after 15 seasons in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians retiring, it's no surprise to see Palmer do the same thing. The no1 overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, Palmer began his career with the Bengals and had all the makings of a superstar quarterback. A devastating knee injury in a playoff game against the Steelers knocked his career off track and he was never quite the player he was pre-injury. Palmer went to the Raiders for a couple of forgettable seasons and then found a nice fit with the Cardinals and Arians. He finishes his pro career with a 62.5 completion percentage, 46,246 passing yards, 294 passing touchdowns and 187 interceptions.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy to be a game-time decision

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) is expected to be a game-time decision and a 'close call' to play in the Wild Card game Sunday, Jan. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The X-rays were negative on McCoy's ankle injury and he certainly won't be 100 percent if he plays on Sunday. McCoy is the Bills offense, and playing without him would be a crushing blow for a team that made a surprising playoff run.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown healing quickly

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown (calf) is reportedly doing well in his rehab as he rehabs his partially torn calf muscle, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, who told reporters Tuesday, Jan. 2, that Brown would be listed as questionable if the Steelers had to play during the first weekend of the playoffs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers have the no2 seed in the AFC, so they're resting this weekend. They'll play the highest seeded team that survives on Wild Card Weekend, and they should have Brown out there when they get back to football.

CIN - Marvin Lewis signs extension

    Source: Bengals.com

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has signed a two-year contract extension running through the 2019 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What a long, strange trip it's been. Lewis was supposed to be gone as the head coach, and there were rumblings about him taking on a different role with the team. Now, he's back to where he never left...and the Bengals are in the same boat they've been in with Lewis.

PHI - QB Nick Foles in no danger of getting pulled

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will remain the starting quarterback during the playoffs. After briefly leaving the door open to benching Foles earlier in the week if he played poorly, head coach Doug Pederson told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, 'My guy is Nick Foles, end of story.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As the no1 seed in the NFC, the Eagles have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. They will face the lowest seeded team that survives Wild Card Weekend. Foles has struggled at times after taking over for an injured Carson Wentz, but the Eagles basically have no other option but to stick with him. Nate Sudfeld is the backup quarterback to Foles and his only pro experience came in Week 17 against the Cowboys last week.

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (knee) was held out of practice Tuesday, Jan. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

HOU - WR Will Fuller to have surgery

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (knee) will undergo minor surgery on his injured knee.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Thompson back will boost the production from the backfield. Several changes could happen in Washington, mainly the question mark about the future of QB Kirk Cousins. If Thompson can regain his form, he's got RB2/flex value in PPR leagues on a weekly basis.

HOU - QB Deshaun Watson ahead of schedule

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop
Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and could take part in organized team activities, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for the Texans here. Watson had surgery in early November to repair the injury and it's crazy to think he could participate in OTAs. Even if he is ready to work in the spring, the Texans will be cautious and take it easy on Watson as they get ready for the 2018 season.

Good news for the Steelers that AB will be able to return in time for their playoff game.

How he is able to run routes, twist and turn is to be seen....

    Thursday Update

NFL - Sam Darnold enters 2018 draft

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Southern California QB Sam Darnold has announced that he is declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many thought Darnold would return for another season at USC. Entering the draft stocks the QB position even more as there may be four or five selected in the first round. Darnold has the size, arm strength and anticipation to make a good (or great) NFL quarterback. He did make too many mistakes in 2017, and Darnold has a loopy release that will need to be tightened up at the pro level. His footwork also seems to be off when the pocket is clean. Even with all the question marks around him, Darnold should be a top-10 pick.

NFL - Josh Rosen declares for 2018 draft

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

UCLA QB Josh Rosen has announced that he will enter the 2018 NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rosen is considered by some in the scouting community to be the best QB available this year. He's got all the tools scouts love; arm strength, accuracy, leadership. However, Rosen does have some injury concerns and there are some concerns about his attitude. He's an alpha male for sure, but there are some who question how well he will take to NFL coaching. Rosen is a lock to be a top-10 pick and he could be the no1 overall selection (even though he may not want to play for the Browns).

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham has torn Achilles'

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in the team's Week 17 game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they once were. Gresham's status for the start of the 2018 season is up in the air with this injury. He signed a four-year, $28 million contract with the Cardinals last March.

BUF - TE Charles Clay limited

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clay is limited most weeks with this knee injury. The team is giving him as much rest as possible before Sunday's road game against the Jaguars.

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Having Benjamin out there on Sunday would greatly benefit the Bills. They may be playing without superstar RB LeSean McCoy who is a game-time decision.

NFL - Kamryn Pettway declares for draft

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Auburn RB Kamryn Pettway declared for the 2018 NFL draft Wednesday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pettway joins fellow Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson in leaving early for the NFL draft. He began his career at Auburn as a fullback and had an injury/suspension shortened 2017 season where he ran for 305 yards and six touchdowns. Pettway is 6'0" 240 pounds and there's not a lot of nuance to his game. He's a power back who runs with great balance and is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. He's likely to be a late-round pick or priority free agent.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman limited

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) was a limited practice participant Wdnesday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Freeman's knee is a concern, but most expected him to be limited most all of the week. The Falcons travel to play the Rams on Saturday night in the Wild Card round. We'll see if Freeman can get a full practice in before the end of the week.

ATL - WR Julio Jones shines bright in postseason

    Source: NFLCommunications.com - Randall Liu

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is the only player in NFL history to achieve multiple playoff games with at least 180 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Falcons want to win on Saturday night against the Rams, it will likely be with a huge game from Jones. They're facing a Wade Phillips defense that will be ready for Jones this weekend.

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (knee) was sidelined during practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Murray is unlikely to play on Saturday against the Chiefs. We should see Derrick Henry be the lead back for the Titans.

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Funchess and the Panthers are traveling to take on the Saints for Wild Card Weekend. We should see star rookie CB Marshon Lattimore draw Funchess in coverage...if Funchess is able to play. It's only Wednesday, so check back later in the week to see if Funchess can practice.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill favorite to start in 2018

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is expected to return as the team's starting quarterback next season, according to head coach Adam Gase.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Tannehill was lost for the 2017 season with a knee injury, and that prompted the Dolphins to lure Jay Cutler out of the Fox broadcast booth. Cutler only had a one-year deal, and he may not return to the team or to the NFL. Tannehill is signed through the 2020 season, and the team needs to find better weapons around him as they may lose WR Jarvis Landry in free agency this offseason.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead, DT Alan Branch return to practice

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Darin Gantt

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) and DT Alan Branch (knee) were back at practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have a bye this week and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. When they play next week they should have Burkhead back as planned.

KC - QB Alex Smith shatters small-ball tag

    Source: ESPN Stats and Information

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith led the league with 17 completions on passes thrown at least 30 yards downfield this season. By comparison, he had 16 such completions combined from 2013 to 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith obviously took some more deep shots this year. Overall, his air-yards-per-attempt average (7.34 yards) was still below the league average (7.96 yards). His mark ranked 24th-lowest for starting QBs this year, but this is a slight improvement over where Smith ranks historically in that category.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy idle Wednesday

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) won't practice Wednesday, Jan. 3, and he's day to day, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy is considered a game-time decision for the Wild Card game against the Jaguars. The team wants to give him as much rest as possible to see if he can be ready for Sunday's contest.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Jay Ajayi (knee) may miss practice time this week because of knee soreness.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles have a bye this week and they have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as the NFC's top seed. Ajayi has had knee problems dating back to his days in college at Boise State. Getting rest is just part of his deal.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian set for another surgery

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian (shoulder) will undergo surgery to repair a damaged posterior capsule in his left shoulder Wednesday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siemian is tough, but he's injury prone and can't make it through a season without sustaining multiple injuries. Last year he had three injuries as the team's starter (both shoulders and a foot injury) and this year he got benched then came back in to start a few weeks later and got hurt. The hits are taking their toll and Siemian is not standing up against the pressure. Siemian underwent an unrelated left shoulder surgery at the end of the 2016 season as well. His future with the team is up in the air.

    Friday Update

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy not in walking boot

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) did not officially practice Thursday, Jan. 4, as reported earlier, but he has shed his walking boot as he continues to recover from an ankle sprain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Bills can get him onto the field, they will. We're not sure how effective he'll be, but we will carefully watch Friday's practice. Marcus Murphy probably gets the start if McCoy is out, and we wouldn't be running to get him in our lineup if that's the case.

TEN - RB DeMarco Murray ruled out

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (knee) has been ruled out for the wild-card round of the playoffs with a sprained knee. RB Derrick Henry will start in his place.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry is a fair runner who has had some nice games this season, and we think he could produce some decent numbers against Kansas City, though we are not expecting him to top the 100 yard mark. The danger is also that the Chiefs get enough of a lead to where Marcus Mariota has to throw the ball to get the Titans back into the game.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan historically good in postseason

    Source: NFL.com

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has the third-highest quarterback rating (minimum 150 pass attempts) in NFL history with a 102.4 mark, registering behind only retired QBs Bart Starr (104.8) and Kurt Warner (102.8).

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan took the Falcons to the Super Bowl last year and nearly won it, so we know he's good. But he has to prove he can finish in the big game. Of course, Atlanta needs to make it back there for him to do so. He's got a tough opponent in the Los Angeles Rams, so he's not one of our top options this week, though he should be solid.

ATL - Another limited practice for RB Devonta Freeman

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) was a limited participant in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 4. However, the team declared he'll be all systems go for the team's playoff game Saturday, Jan. 6, against the Los Angeles Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Much as we believe it to be the case with Julio Jones, we think the team is just taking it easy on the veteran back. Freeman is an important part of the offense, and we think he'll put up solid numbers this weekend. He's not quite in the same category as Todd Gurley and Leonard Fournette, but he's a solid option with upside.

ATL - WR Julio Jones limited in practice again

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (ankle, ribs) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 4. However, the team declared he'll be all systems go for the team's playoff game Saturday, Jan. 6, versus the Los Angeles Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They're just being cautious with Jones, who should be very productive this weekend, even against a tough Rams defense. He's one of our top choices at the position.

NO - WR Michael Thomas takes part in practice

    Source: NewOrleansSaints.com

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (hamstring) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas will be playing this weekend, and is arguably the best start at the position for the slate of games. He might be a bit pricey in DFS, but we like what he brings to the table.

KC - WR Albert Wilson listed as questionable

    Source: Chiefs.com

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson (hamstring) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 4, but is listed as questionable for the Wild Card playoff game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're expecting him to play and as the Titans follow Tyreek Hill around, Wilson could do some damage. He probably won't cost much in Daily Fantasy, but he could put up some decent numbers as a nice WR2 play.

BUF - Limited practice for TE Charles Clay

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think he'll be good to go this weekend and Clay has seen a consistent amount of targets the last three weeks, totaling 37 over that period. He's a solid start and someone a lot of people will likely overlook.

BUF - WR Kelvin Benjamin limited again

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin finally seemed to be clicking in the offense, so it's good to see him practicing. The Bills will need him and we think he could be a solid option this weekend as a reasonably priced receiver.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess' absences precautionary

Source: Charlotte Observer - Jourdan Rodrigue

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (shoulder) admitted his practice absences of late have been precautionary.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
So it sounds like he could play, but will be a game time decision. That's better for Carolina, and possibly Cam Newton's production, as well as give Fantasy GMs a top WR1 option this week. Keep an eye on him and alternatives as a game time decision for the last game of the weekend is dicey.

BAL - Baltimore could draft quarterback

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco may be mentoring a successor in the near future, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh said the Ravens will 'for sure' be talking about drafting a quarterback this year with Flacco turning 33 years old in a couple of weeks. Baltimore has not selected a quarterback in the first five rounds of a draft since they took Flacco with the 18th overall pick in 2008.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Flacco had about as poor a season as he's ever had, and there will certainly be questions as to how much more he has in the tank. We wouldn't expect a new starter anytime soon, but don't be shocked if the Ravens grab a quarterback on Day 2 of the draft.

BAL - RB Alex Collins not guaranteed starting spot

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens RB Alex Collins wasn't guaranteed the starting spot for 2018 as head coach John Harbaugh said the team is looking to upgrade everything.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nothing worked consistently for the Ravens offense and while Collins had his moments, there wasn't enough consistency to name him the lead back this early. When he got a full load - or close to it - we liked what we saw, so we're hoping to see more of that in training camp.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart practicing

    Source: Panthers.com - Bill Voth

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) is practicing Thursday, Jan. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There aren't a ton of options this week with just four games going, so Stewart has value regardless of ranking. That said, Christian McCaffrey has better upside and gets receptions as well, so if you are picking up a Carolina back, the rookie is a better bet.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee out of practice

Source: The Boston Globe - Jim McBride

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (knee) is out of practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Injury and other options limited Gillislee and he really didn't bring much to the table this year. He could explode during the playoffs -- somebody always does -- but we wouldn't be looking to invest heavily in him for DFS playoff purposes once the Patriots start playing again.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman not guaranteed spot

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman isn't guaranteed to return to the Ravens in 2018, in the opinion of beat writer Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Injuries and offensive struggles sank Perriman's season, though he has underwhelmed a little in his two years. If he does come back, it's likely he will be on his last chance and will have to show productivity and an ability to stay healthy.

BAL - WR Jeremy Maclin a likely cut

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Jeremy Maclin is a top candidate to be cut in the offseason before he's due a $1 million roster bonus March 16. Cutting him would save the team $5 million in salary cap space.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Maclin landed with a thud in Baltimore and has now had two straight seasons where he played just a dozen games and didn't crack 600 yards. We think he might get one more shot somewhere else, but in terms of fantasy we think even then he will have no real value.

JAX - WR Marqise Lee expected to play

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (ankle) is expected to play in the Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills, but he may not practice all week, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We aren't too sure how much we trust him coming off his layoff. Keelan Cole seems like a better bet to succeed this week, assuming Blake Bortles doesn't implode.

MIA - QB Jay Cutler unlikely to return

    Source: The Associated Press

Miami Dolphins QB Jay Cutler is not expected to be back with the team in 2018, according to head coach Adam Gase.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There was talk towards the end of the season that Cutler might return next season, but that's clearly no longer the case. Of course, there's no guarantee Ryan Tannehill will be the guy either, and the future of the Miami quarterback position is very much up in the air.

    Saturday Update

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins will sign offer if tagged

Source: The Washington Post - Kimberley A. Martin

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would sign the one-year tender offer if he receives the franchise tag again this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington could actually franchise Cousins for a third time in a row, but that move would get Cousins a one-year guaranteed salary of $34.5 million. We could see Cousins tagged with the idea that some team would trade for him and give him the long-term deal he covets. Washington may consider placing the transition tag on Cousins, which would also get them something in return if he is signed away by another team. It's hard to believe Washington will let Cousins walk without getting anything for him in return.

The Panthers need all hands on deck as they face the Saints on Wild Card Weekend. Olsen came back in Week 12 and took some time to get going. A 9-catch performance in Week 15 further emphasized how important Olsen can be to QB Cam Newton and the Panthers passing game. If they're going to beat the Saints (in their house), then the Panthers need a big day from Olsen.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart should be in uniform

    Source: Panthers.com

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 5, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stewart was scratched from action in Week 17 when his back tightened up in the 11th hour. That extra week gave him more rest, and Stewart was eased into practice for Wild Card Weekend. Against the Saints on Sunday, Stewart should lead the way on the ground for the Panthers with rookie RB Christian McCaffrey working as the change-of-pace and primary receiving back.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy listed as questionable

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) is listed as questionable for the team's Wild-Card Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Jan. 7, after practicing in a limited fashion Friday, Jan. 5. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the 'belief' is that McCoy will play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy should play but he's not going to be 100 percent healthy. We'll have to see McCoy tough it out against the Jaguars on Sunday if the Bills have any chance of winning it will have to be with a big day from McCoy.

JAX - WR Marqise Lee questionable for wild-card round

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (ankle) 'looked better than anticipated' in practice Friday, Jan. 5, according to head coach Doug Marrone and is listed as questionable for the team's Wild-Card Game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Jan. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Having Lee out there would be a boost for the Jags passing game, but they have a plethora of talented WRs in case he needs to miss another contest. The team will turn to guys like Allen Hurns, Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole if need be.

CLE - Uncertain future for WR Corey Coleman?

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman faces an 'uncertain future' with the team after a second straight season of 'unmet expectations,' according to ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Coleman has only played in 19 games over two seasons. The QB play with the Browns doesn't help, but Coleman has not been consistent when he's on the field. Cleveland has his rights three more years if they want, but there's already speculation that they could put him on the trade block.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon out of practice

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (illness) is out of practice Friday, Jan. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll have to see if Yeldon can get over this illness in time for the Wild Card game. He's a valuable backup behind starter Leonard Fournette, but the Jaguars also have Chris Ivory as a capable reserve.

NFL - Lamar Jackson coming out

    Source: Twitter

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson has declared for the 2018 NFL draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is a dynamic athlete who can hurt a defense with his arm or his scrambling ability. He's a slender quarterback, so durability concerns are there for the Louisville passer. Jackson has a rocket arm, and the comparisons to Michael Vick may not be too outlandish.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry a historically busy receiver

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry caught 112 passes in 2017, which led the NFL. Landry now has 400 career receptions, an NFL record for a fourth-year player.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Landry is set to hit free agency in March. There have been reports about the Dolphins potentially working something out with Landry before he gets to the open market.

KC - RB Kareem Hunt wins rushing title

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt led the NFL in rushing yardage for the 2017 season with 1,327 yards. Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley, who did not play in Week 17, finished second with 1,305.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunt had one carry in Week 17 against the Broncos, but that 35-yard touchdown run was enough to put him over the top. The rookie from Toledo proved to be a great find for the Chiefs, and he made a huge impact for them from Week 1. With his role in the Chiefs offense, Hunt is a first-round pick in fantasy drafts next year...even if KC switches to Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins tops NFL in TD grabs

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins caught 13 touchdown passes in 2017, three more than anyone else in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopkins showed a great connection with rookie QB Deshaun Watson, but even after Watson was lost for the year we saw Hopkins make big plays with Tom Savage or T.J. Yates tossing him the rock.

NYJ - Jets willing to trade up for QB

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said Wednesday, Jan. 3, that he would be willing to move up in the 2018 NFL Draft in order to select a quarterback. 'If that was a player we felt strong about, we would have no qualms of potentially trying to go up and get him,' Maccagnan said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets have the no6 pick overall in the 2018 NFL draft. With a few QB-needy teams in front of them (Browns, Giants, Broncos) they might have to move up if they find the player they want at the position.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette ready for playoffs

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette 'wants the ball' against the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Jan. 7, according to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette deserves to get the ball as much as possible. He can hammer away and grind the Bills down as the game goes on. The Jaguars are built to run the ball and play great defense...a recipe for success in the playoffs.

LAC - TE Antonio Gates' future up in the air

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates' future with the team is currently undecided, general manager Tom Telesco said Thursday, Jan. 4.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gates is set to be a free agent in March, and it would be odd to see him in another jersey. He's a Hall of Fame tight end the Chargers found in the college basketball ranks. Having never played college football, Gates has become a force since his breakout season in 2004. Gates says he wants to be back, and the Chargers could bring him back if the price is right. Hunter Henry is their lead tight end for 2018, even if Gates does stay with the team.

Leading Rusher 1300 yards. I remember the days of Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, Adrian Peterson. May not see a 2000 yard Rusher again

    Sunday Update

DET - Matt Patricia headed to Detroit?

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

The New England Patriots are expecting defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to leave to become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stay tuned to see how this plays out for the Lions and Patricia.

KC - KC open to trading QB Alex Smith?

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

The Kansas City Chiefs will not actively seek out trade partners for QB Alex Smith this offseason, but they will listen, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, who speculated the one thing that may cause 'all sides to pull back' is if the Chiefs make a run to the Super Bowl.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team moved up in the 2017 NFL draft to select QB Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech, and he's the team's QB of the future. Smith has one more year left on his contract with a $20.6 million cap hit for 2018. The Chiefs could clear up $17 million in cap space by getting Smith off the books. With so many QB desperate teams, the Chiefs could fetch a few draft picks for the veteran.

CAR - Ron Rivera appears close to receiving extension

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly close to finalizing a contract extension for head coach Ron Rivera, which would keep him with the team through the 2020 season, according to multiple sources. His current deal expires after the 2018 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers have had quite a bit of success under the guidance of Rivera. They made a Super Bowl appearance just a couple of years ago and are back into the postseason this year. Extending Rivera just makes sense.

DET - WR Marvin Jones to work with Randy Moss

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones had a league-high 16 receptions on passes thrown 20 or more yards down the field this year and ranked third in yards and touchdowns, and he credited his success on deep throws to his offseason work with retired WR Randy Moss. 'I'm probably just going to replicate what I did this offseason,' Jones said. 'I worked with Randy more toward the summer, so I'm going to do that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones always had the speed and ball-tracking ability to be a fine deep threat. His work with Moss only helped him take his game to the next level. The Lions are going through another coaching change, but the offense - specifically the passing game - is one of the strengths of the team.

MIA - RB Damien Williams wants to return

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins RB Damien Williams will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but he said he wants to remain with Miami. 'I'm confident this is where I want to be,' Williams said. 'They understand that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins have found their lead back with Kenyon Drake, so if Williams does return it would only be as a backup. Williams can catch passes out of the backfield, but his career average of 3.6 yards per carry isn't going to garner much attention on the open market.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills played with finger injury

Source: Palm Beach Post - Jason Lieser

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills (finger) said he played most of the 2017 season with a torn finger tendon on his right hand.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The injury is not expected to require surgery. Stills is signed through 2020 and he continues to build and improve his role with the Dolphins as their deep threat. With Jarvis Landry set to hit free agency, the Dolphins have some decisions to make at the position. Losing Landry could open the door for Stills to do more, but early reports indicate Miami is going to do what they can to keep Landry in place.

NO - RB Mark Ingram misses out clause

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram had a career-high 1,540 yards from scrimmage this season and would have become a free agent had he been named a first-team All-Pro selection. His contract now expires in 2019.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Saints have a strong running back corps led by Ingram. They'll continue to use him as their lead back with Alvin Kamara getting plenty of work in this dynamic duo. Dynasty owners need to add Jonathan Williams to their rosters if at all possible. Williams is a talented runner (backfield mates with Alex Collins at Arkansas) and could take over Ingram's role if injuries strike.
