NFL Player News - Week 5

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

OAK - QB Derek Carr could miss 2-6 weeks

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Michael Gehlken

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) has a transverse process fracture in his back and likely will miss at least the Week 5 game, according to head coach Jack Del Rio. The typical recovery time for Carr's injury is two to six weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see E.J. Manuel in as the starter for the Raiders while Carr is out, and that hurts their skill position players. Carr could miss the next few games as he deals with this injury.

MIN - RB Dalvin Cook's season over

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook (knee) will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. He will require surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Vikings fans and fantasy owners here. Cook was off to a tremendous start during his rookie season, compiling 354 rushing yards (4.8 YPC), two rushing touchdowns and 10 catches for 90 yards in less than four full games. We should see Cook return to action sometime in 2018 during training camp. In the meantime, the Vikings turn to Latavius Murray as their featured back. Murray signed a three-year, $15 million contract this offseason but has been slowed by ankle issues.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray not 100 percent

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray (ankle) said his ankle isn't 100 percent after offseason surgery, but he's ready for a big workload if needed in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team needs Murray to come through now that rookie RB Dalvin Cook is done for the year. Murray is a big, swift runner who can be tough to bring down once he builds a head of steam. He's also capable as a receiver out of the backfield. Fantasy owners in need of RB help can likely go to the wire and snare Murray now. He's got RB2 potential every week just based off workload.

MIN - RB Jerick McKinnon left with ankle injury

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (ankle) left the game Sunday, Oct. 1, due to an ankle injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnon will continue as the change-of-pace back for the Vikings. We will see Latavius Murray take over as the team's starter now that Dalvin Cook (knee) is done for the year.

CHI - QB Mitchell Trubisky taking over

Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano and Adam Schefter

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky will take over as the starting quarterback in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trubisky has flashed when on the field, but that was during the preseason and things are going to be much different in the regular season. Even if/when the rookie struggles, he's likely to be a better option than the constant turnover that was Mike Glennon. The Bears pass-catchers might get a slight uptick in production now that the quarterback position is likely improved.

BUF - WR Jordan Matthews likely out a month

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills WR Jordan Matthews (thumb) is expected to undergo thumb surgery to have a pin inserted, and he could miss a month.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a blow to the Bills passing game as things were just starting to take shape for Tyrod Taylor and company. With Matthews down, the team turns to rookie Zay Jones as the primary player at the position. However, we should see plenty of targets for TE Charles Clay and RB LeSean McCoy...perhaps now more than ever. Opposite Jones, Andre Holmes or Kaelin Clay might get some more looks.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota day-to-day

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (hamstring) is considered day-to-day because of the hamstring strain he suffered in Week 4, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's early in the week, but Mariota could be a game-time decision in Week 5. Titans head coach Mike Mularkey has indicated that both Mariota and Matt Cassel will be prepped as the starter in practice this week.

TB - RB Doug Martin added to roster

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin was activated from the Reserve/Suspended list Monday, Oct. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Martin is back in action for the Buccaneers, and he should take over as the team's primary ball carrier upon his return to game action. Each week, fantasy owners know that Martin has RB1 potential but it may take some time to get him into football shape. We could see Martin on a snap count if the team wants to ease him back into action in Week 5.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls next in line to start?

    Source: ESPN.com - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls was a healthy scratch in Week 4, but head coach Pete Carroll seemed to suggest he would get the nod over Eddie Lacy in the wake of Chris Carson's 'significant' leg injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the way it seems, and fantasy owners that can choose between the two could go with Rawls. The two have a combined 10 carries for seven yards in 2017, but there could be enough volume here to be flex worthy if you need RB help from the waiver wire.

ATL - WR Mohamed Sanu could miss 2-3 weeks

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu (hamstring) underwent an MRI on Monday, Oct. 2, and is expected to miss two or three weeks with a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've got good news on Julio Jones (hip) but that's not the case with Sanu. His hamstring needs proper time to heal or it could linger as the year goes on. With Sanu out, it leads to more opportunity for guys like Taylor Gabriel or Justin Hardy.

ATL - WR Julio Jones likely fine

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (hip) isn't expected to miss playing time with the Week 5 bye, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whew! Good news for the Falcons and fantasy owners here. Jones was hurt with a hip flexor injury in the second quarter, and the team ruled him out after halftime. With a Week 5 bye, the Falcons superstar WR will have plenty of time to get healthy.

SEA - RB Chris Carson placed on IR

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (ankle, leg) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Oct. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carson is eligible to return in eight weeks but we're not counting on it. If all goes well during his recovery, the Seahawks might choose to bring Carson back if they make a postseason run. Seattle moves forward with Thomas Rawls or Eddie Lacy as the primary back with C.J. Prosise as the change-of-pace back.

CAR - TE Greg Olsen out of walking boot

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) is no longer wearing a boot on his surgically repaired foot and said his recovery is going well.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a good sign for Olsen as he continues to recover. The Panthers could designate him as one of their two players to return from IR. If healthy, Olsen can practice in four weeks and return to the playing field in six weeks.

CLE - WR Kenny Britt almost benched

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said WR Kenny Britt probably should have been benched in Week 4, but the team had injuries at the position during the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a vote of confidence. Britt has been targeted 18 times over the last two weeks after only getting targeted five times over the first two games of 2017. As the Browns get healthier at the WR position, they'll use Britt less and less.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead limited Monday

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (ribs) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead has missed the last two weeks due to this injury. Ribs injuries are always about dealing with pain. The Patriots will work out Burkhead this week to see how he responds.

    17. BAL - RB Alex Collins working on fumbling issues
    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley
Baltimore Ravens RB Alex Collins is working with the coaching staff on how his holding the ball in hopes of cutting down on his fumbles. He has fumbled twice in 25 carries this season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Collins has talent as a ball carrier, but it doesn't matter if you put the rock on the carpet. He's posted 164 rushing yards over the last two weeks (both 9-carry, 82-yard performances) and is averaging 8.2 yards per carry in 2017.

TEN - WR Corey Davis expected to sit again

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (hamstring) is making progress in his rehab but likely will not be able to play in Week 5, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis is now going to miss three games in a row with this hamstring injury. It's good the Titans are not rushing him back, but it's bad for fantasy owners hanging onto him and holding out hope for the talented rookie. In shallow bench leagues you should've dropped Davis if you need WR help.

NYG - RB Paul Perkins X-rays negative

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins (ribs) had X-rays on his bruised ribs, which were negative. It's likely to be a pain tolerance issue moving forward.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ribs injuries always come down to how much pain a player can deal with and play through. Even when healthy, Perkins hasn't been impressing for the Giants. Rookie Wayne Gallman got into the game when Perkins was hurt and looked better. The Giants aren't running the ball well, so expect changes to be made which could include more carries for Gallman or Orleans Darkwa.

    Wednesday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck to practice this week

Source: CBS 4 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is set to return to practice this week, according to general manager Chris Ballard. 'We'll slowly start working him back into practice this week,' Ballard said. 'We'll see how much he gets. But we've got a plan in place to where we want him to start getting him reps and then, in time, as we can get him incorporated back into team work and all that, we'll get him back on the field.' The team's first practice of the week is Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Luck is finally going to get back on the practice field. We wouldn't expect him in a game until Week 7 at the earliest providing there are no setbacks in his recovery. Monitor his progress as he gets back at it.

OAK - QB EJ Manuel to start Week 5

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Oakland Raiders QB EJ Manuel will be the starting quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manuel did a good job moving the ball against the Broncos (11-of-17, 106 yards) in Week 4 but made a mistake throwing up a deep pass near the end of the game that was picked off by FS Justin Simmons. The Ravens have the 17th pass defense by allowing an average of 222.3 passing yards per game.

LAC - Austin Ekeler to see more action

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler is expected to see an uptick in action going forward, as the team looks for ways to get the ball in his hands.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners in deeper leagues need to consider Ekeler. As Melvin Gordon continues to struggle with a knee issue, Ekeler could pick up some more work as a reserve back. He's got at least 'what the heck' flex appeal in deep PPR leagues.

BUF - WR Andre Holmes expected to start

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills WR Andre Holmes is expected to start opposite WR Zay Jones in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills needed to move someone up the depth chart as Jordan Matthews suffered a thumb injury in Week 4. Matthews will need surgery and be out for at least a month. We see plenty of targets for RB LeSean McCoy and TE Charles Clay, and a limited number of throws towards the speedy Holmes.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott decision during bye?

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Kate Hairopoulos

Dallas Cowboys QB Ezekiel Elliott will have his playing status determined soon by a three-judge panel from the 5th United States Circuit Court of Appeal.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are walking on eggshells when it comes to Elliott's status. There is no official timeline, although a decision might come as early as this week and is expected to be made by next week when the team has a bye. Stay tuned.

WAS - RB Rob Kelley expects to play after bye

    Source: CSNWashington.com - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley (ankle) said Tuesday, Oct. 3, that he feels he'll be ready to play after the team's bye week.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He suffered an ankle injury in the Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Oct. 2. Kelley has struggled with the injury bug in 2017, but he's got some time to heal and be the lead back this team needs. Rookie Samaje Perine has power as a runner, but he's struggled to impress while Kelley has been out/limited. Chris Thompson is a fine weapon but he's more of a change-of-pace back and Washington doesn't seem intent on increasing his workload.

CLE - No reinstatement yet for WR Josh Gordon

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has not yet applied for reinstatement, a source said Tuesday, Oct. 3.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pro Football Talk reports Gordon has not yet applied for reinstatement. Even when he does apply, there's no guarantee that Gordon will get back into the league. In super deep leagues there are some fantasy owners picking up Gordon as a lottery ticket.

GB - WR Davante Adams could play Week 5?

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) has a chance to be cleared in time to play in Week 5 against Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Every player goes through the concussion protocol at a different pace. Adams was rocked against the Bears last week and should be limited during the week of practice (at best) this week. We'd consider him a game-time decision at this point.

SEA - RB Chris Carson has ankle surgery

    Source: Seahawks.com

Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson (leg, ankle) underwent surgery on his left ankle Tuesday, Oct. 3.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carson has been placed on Injured Reserve and there is hope he could return later in the regular season or in the postseason. Without Carson, the Seahawks will turn to either Thomas Rawls or Eddie Lacy as their lead back. C.J. Prosise will serve as the team's change-of-pace back.

GB - GB wants to go to TE Martellus Bennett earlier

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky
Green Bay Packers TE Martellus Bennett will likely be more involved in the offense earlier in games moving forward, according to quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners would like to see that too. They need to get to Bennett early to establish a rhythm, so this report is something to watch to see if it comes to fruition. Bennett is a TE1 against the Cowboys in Week 5.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery has multiple broken ribs

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Brett Christopherson

Updating previous reports, Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery (ribs) said he has multiple broken ribs, but he is feeling better.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rib injuries always come down to a pain tolerance issue. If Montgomery can play with quite a bit of pain, then he could be back on the field as early as this week. The Packers play at Dallas in Week 5 and rookie RB Aaron Jones is looking at a larger role with Montgomery out or limited with this injury.

IND - TE Jack Doyle in protocol

Source: FOX 59 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle (concussion) is in the concussion protocol following the Week 4 game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Every player progresses through the concussion protocol at a different rate. Expect Doyle to at least be limited practice this week. We may have a better idea about his playing status in Week 5 on Friday, but this early he's got to be considered a game-time decision for the game against the 49ers. Brandon Williams would be the lead TE for the Colts if Doyle is out.

SF - QB Brian Hoyer to remain QB

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers Brian Hoyer will remain in the starting quarterback job for the time being, as coach Kyle Shanahan told media he has 'not given any consideration' to a QB change.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The dreaded vote of confidence for Hoyer means get ready for rookie C.J. Beathard if the struggles for the veteran quarterback continue.

    Thursday Update

OAK - Limited practice for WR Michael Crabtree

    Source: Raiders.com

Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (chest) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a surprise here. Let's see what he can do in Thursday's session.

OAK - WR Amari Cooper limited Wednesday

    Source: Raiders.com

Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper hasn't looked right. Let's see if he's able to do more in Thursday's practice.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota limited

    Source: NFL

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (hamstring) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch this one closely to see what he can do Thursday. Tennessee is generally pretty open about injuries and we hopefully will have clarity soon.

IND - QB Andrew Luck working on return

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) said he is working on strengthening his surgically-repaired shoulder and is not ready to throw at full strength yet. Luck said he definitely will be able to play this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the plan anyway...but the plan has been altered already. Luck was supposed to be back around this time but now most around the team believe a Week 7 return is the earliest he could be back. Add him now in leagues where he's available and you've got the bench space to stash him.

GB - Top two GB backs at practice on Wednesday

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RBs Ty Montgomery (ribs) and Jamaal Williams (knee) both participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a good sign for their availability in Week 5. Montgomery might be limited as he deals with a painful ribs injury. That could lead to a few more touches for Aaron Jones. The Packers are going up against a Cowboys defense that averages 107.5 rushing yards per game (16th).

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins (ribs) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Perkins hasn't been doing much as the Giants starter. Now that he's banged up, rookie Wayne Gallman may be in line for a larger opportunity.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette listed as limited

    Source: NFL

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette can be limited all week and still post RB1 numbers on Sunday. Monitor his practice status, but he should be able to start for the Jaguars (and your fantasy team) on Sunday against the Steelers.

DET - WR Kenny Golladay remains sidelined

    Source: NFL

Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Golladay missed last week's game against the Vikings and he doesn't look like he's on track for this week either. No matter for fantasy owners as most have moved on from the rookie after his Week 1 breakout.

IND - TE Jack Doyle limited

    Source: Colts.com

Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle (concussion) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doyle is in the concussion protocol and his status for Week 5 is up in the air. Look at him as a game-time decision if he's not cleared by Friday and find a different option at TE this week.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi practices in full

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Ajayi and his fantasy owners here. It would be even better news if Dolphins HC Adam Gase went back to using Ajayi more...especially when the team is near pay dirt. At home against the Titans in Week 5, Ajayi is an RB2 with upside.

NYG - NYG's starting receivers limited Wednesday

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WRs Odell Beckham Jr. (finger, ankle) and Brandon Marshall (toe) took part in a limited practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both are limited on Wednesday but we expect them to practice fully by the end of the week. You start Beckham every week he's on the field and Marshall should be considered a WR3/flex option against the Chargers in Week 5.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte missing practice Wednesday

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (toe) was sidelined at practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Forte can't practice - even limited - by the end of the week, he could be shut down again. That leads to a larger opportunity for both Bilal Powell and rookie Eli McGuire. The Jets offense should be able to have their way with the Browns in Week 5.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin sits out practice Wednesday

Source: The Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin played with this knee issue last week and came through for his quarterback and for fantasy owners with four catches for 104 yards against the Patriots. In Week 5, the Panthers travel to take on the Lions and we see Benjamin as a low-end WR2/WR3 in PPR leagues.

    25. GB - WR Davante Adams still in protocol

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Michael Gehlken

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) will do some light side work in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4, but remains in the concussion protocol, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reports speculated yesterday that Adams could actually play in Week 5. If he does play against the Cowboys, Adams could produce like a WR3/flex option. The Cowboys have the 20th ranked pass defense and allow an average of 231.8 passing yards per game.

    Friday Update

NYG - Odell Beckham listed as limited

    Source: Giants.com

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (ankle, finger) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While Beckham may be on some people's last nerves, his Fantasy GM's will continue to be happy with him, as we expect WR1 production again this week. Ultimately if he wants to act goofy on or off the field, as long as he produces most people in fantasy won't be that upset. Giants fans? That's an entirely different discussion.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota does more Thursday

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe
Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (hamstring) was able to do a little more during practice Thursday, Oct. 5, according to head coach Mike Mularkey. Mularkey said he will need to see some mobility from Mariota if he has a chance to play in Week 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
While even a hobbled Mariota would be better than Matt Cassel, that's just from an NFL standpoint. From a fantasy standpoint a banged-up Mariota may be too risky of play see if you could find a better option.

PIT - TE Jesse James upgraded to full at practice

    Source: NFLMedia.com

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James (shoulder) was a full participant at practice Thursday Oct. 5, one day after he practiced on a limited basis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Against the Jaguars on Sunday, we've got James down as a TE2 for fantasy owners. You likely have better options for your starting lineup, even with four teams on bye.

MIN - RB Jerick McKinnon practices

    Source: NFL

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnon will be the backup to Latavius Murray on Monday night. He's only a 'what the heck' flex in deep leagues as the Vikings change-of-pace back.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford limited Thursday

    Source: NFL

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is back to practicing and the team wants to see how he responds to working out. The Vikings play on Monday night against the Bears and Bradford could be back in the starting lineup. If you want to start him, make sure that Case Keenum or Mitchell Trubisky is available just in case Bradford is scratched again.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette upgraded to full

    Source: NFLMedia.com

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) was a full participant at practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fournette is going to be the team's battering ram against the Steelers. He's a must start RB1 for fantasy owners.

GB - RB Jamaal Williams practices in full

    Source: NFL

Green Bay Packers RB Jamaal Williams (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams looks like he could play against the Cowboys with this minor knee issue. If Ty Montgomery starts and Williams backs him up, that makes Aaron Jones go from potential hot waiver wire addition to non factor in Week 5.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery listed as limited

    Source: NFL

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery (ribs) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rib injuries are all about pain tolerance. As Montgomery has been limited this week, there's a chance he makes it into the starting lineup against the Cowboys in Week 5. Lower expectations if he does play as Montgomery may be on some sort of snap count.

GB - WR Davante Adams remains limited

    Source: NFL

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's still in the concussion protocol but could be cleared before Sunday. Check on his status Friday to see if he's fully participating.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi sidelined at practice

    Source: NFLMedia.com

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ajayi should be able to practice - even limited - on Friday. He's a low-end RB1 against the Titans on Sunday.

CLE - WR Kenny Britt sits again

    Source: ClevelandBrowns.com
Cleveland Browns WR Kenny Britt (groin, knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While we think Britt will play, most of this offense is not useful for Fantasy purposes, including Britt. Consider him no more than a WR5.

NYG - RB Paul Perkins does not practice

    Source: Giants.com

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins (ribs) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wayne Gallman should get the start, but we wouldn't have him in our lineup as anything but and RB4.

NYG - Full practice for WR Brandon Marshall

    Source: Giants.com

New York Giants WR Brandon Marshall (toe) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall looks pretty done, and a dysfunctional and imploding offense hasn't helped. Even if he plays we're not anxious to get him in our lineups.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin limited Thursday

    Source: Panthers.com

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Devin Funchess has done well in Benjamin's stead, and should have some WR3 production this week.

BAL - Benjamin Watson remains sidelined

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens TE Benjamin Watson (calf) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson is a borderline TE1 start if he's going, so we'll watch this for you up until game time. If he practices tomorrow he should be good to go.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte sits again

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini
New York Jets RB Matt Forte (toe) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forte is done, you can put a fork in him. It's a great matchup against Cleveland, and we expect Bilal Powell to put RB1 production out and Elijah McGuire potentially be a solid RB3.

Tampa bay seems to have had kicking problems since letting Bryant leave. It at least seems that way, I can't remember their last decent kicker.

    Saturday Update

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota a game-time call

    Source: TitansOnline.com
Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 6, and is listed as questionable. It is believed he will be a game-time decision.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Mariota will be limited as a runner if active, although he has a decent matchup against the Dolphins. He's an acceptable bye week fill-in if active, but not a preferred option.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford trending in the right direction

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford (knee) told reporters Friday, Oct. 6, it is 'night and day' how much better his knee feels with two weeks off in between practices. Bradford stated he will likely have to play through discomfort all season and acknowledged he will have to see how he feels after practice Saturday, Oct. 7, before determining whether or not he can play on Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears to end Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We may not know for sure on Sunday morning whether Bradford will play, but if he does, he's a solid high floor bye week quarterback this week, and his return would also help Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. Stay tuned.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte ruled out

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (toe) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bilal Powell remains a near RB1 in this four-team bye week and Elijah McGuire should get flex consideration for you.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise doubtful for Week 5

    Source: Seahawks.com
Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (ankle) did not practice Friday, Oct. 6, and he is listed as doubtful for Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

J.D. McKissic will get another go at passing downs after his two touchdown debut against the Colts last week. The Rams have given up seven running back scores already this year, so he's not a bad desperation play.

LAC - WR Tyrell Williams listed as questionable

    Source: Chargers.com

Los Angeles Chargers WR Tyrell Williams (neck) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 6, but is listed as questionable for Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams was a late add to the injury report this week but practiced in full and should be okay for Sunday's game at the Giants. He's a WR3/Flex consideration unless he is inactive.

OAK - QB Derek Carr a game-time call - Manuel Expected To Start

    Source: NFL

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 6, and is questionable for Week 5. He is a game-time decision.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carr is not expected to play and you should treat your Raiders starts as if he won't go and instead be replaced by EJ Manuel when setting lineups on Sunday.

OAK - WR Michael Crabtree removed from report

    Source: NFL

Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (chest) was a full participant in practice Friday, Oct. 6, and has been removed from the practice report.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crabtree has made a full recovery from his bruised lung and will start on Sunday against Baltimore. EJ Manuel is at quarterback and might limit his upside.

GB - WR Davante Adams limited again

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) was limited in practice again on Friday, Oct. 6, and is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll know Adams' status when the Packers leave for Dallas. If he can't play, Geronimo Allison is a good WR3/Flex after he riffed well with Aaron Rodgers earlier this year when Randall Cobb was out.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery doubtful for Week 5

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery (ribs) took part in a limited practice Friday, Oct. 6, but he is listed as doubtful for Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams will likely split the work with Montgomery out. Jones outplayed Williams last week, but Williams is better in pass protection and may get more snaps. Both are just low-end flex play or desperation flexes.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert to miss another game

    Source: Bengals.com

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (back) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 6, and has been ruled out for Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tyler Kroft scored twice in Eifert's stead last week and he's a fine desperation tight end this week against Buffalo.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood questionable for Sunday

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood (knee) did not practice for the third consecutive day Friday, Oct. 6, but he is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smallwood is unlikely to play if he couldn't practice this week. LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement would get more carries if he is out and Kenjon Barner will see some passing down snaps.

JAX - WR Marqise Lee listed as questionable

    Source: Jaguars.com

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (ribs) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 6, and is listed as questionable for Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lee could play, but might not be effective over the middle nursing a rib injury. Allen Hurns has more appeal as a what the heck WR3/Flex now.

GB - WR Davante Adams remains in protocol

    Source: Packer Report

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) is still in the league's concussion protocol and will need to be cleared from it before the team get on the plane if he wants to play against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're guessing Adams won't play this week, giving Geronimo Allison a great opportunity against a poor Cowboys secondary. Adams should return for a matchup against the Vikings next week.

    Sunday Morning Injury Updates

    QUARTERBACK

Marcus Mariota | Hamstring | Questionable | Unlikely to play / Limited if active

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thursday - Limited | Friday - Limited
Mariota wants to play this week and he's optimistic he'll be able to play. The Titans allowed Mariota to speak with the media after practice on Friday and he told reporters, "If I'm able to move around, hand the ball off, and drop back, I'll definitely play."
Unfortunately, what a player wants to do and what a player's injured body is able to do are often two different things.
Mike Mularkey told reporters on Thursday that Mariota would have to prove he was mobile enough to protect himself in the pocket and execute the team's game plan. At no point this week did Mariota show he could do that. Including Friday's limited practice, Mariota was only seen doing light throwing drills without much movement before going in for treatment. Mularkey has said the team will be smart with their decision. It's unlikely Mariota improves enough to play if he hasn't made much progress in the first five days after his injury.

I still believe he's on the doubtful side of questionable. If he does play, expect no designed runs or rollouts, no scrambling, and less downfield accuracy than usual.
***Sunday AM Update: Both Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport tweeted Mariota is not expected to play today. Rapoport tweeted Mariota was given an early timetable of 2-4 weeks, which suggests a higher grade injury and one the Titans will undoubtedly choose to rehab in the hopes of a Week 6 return rather than risk aggravation and a longer recovery time.

    Derek Carr
    | Back | Questionable | Unlikely to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thursday - Limited | Friday - Limited
Ian Rapoport did a television interview on Friday and reported Carr was "truly questionable" and said there was a "chance" he could play this week.

    Don't bet on it.

An isolated transverse process fracture is not a long-term injury. It's not a weight-bearing bone and it doesn't have to fully heal before a player can be cleared for contact. But it's still a painful injury and often causes spasm of attached muscles. It's possible Carr can play through these limitations against Baltimore. But it's pushing the limits of expectation -- both Tony Romo and Cam Newton needed two weeks to recover and missed a game each -- and may put Carr's availability at risk in the future. With divisional matchups against the Chargers and Chiefs in Week 6 and 7, I expect the Raiders to rest Carr and allow him more time to recover.

***Sunday AM Update: Both Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport tweeted Carr is not expected to play today.

*Sam Bradford | Knee | Questionable | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited | Sat - Limited

The Vikings won't officially update Bradford's chances of playing Monday night but Mike Zimmer told reporters Saturday his quarterback wasn't significantly improved since Thursday's practice. Bradford returned to light individual drills this week but continues to throw without running or any pocket movement. He's shown no evidence he can protect himself in the pocket. Every game is important but risking a limited Bradford in Week 5 against Chicago with another division matchup against contender Green Bay in Week 6 doesn't make sense.

***Sunday AM Update: Stacey Dales reported this morning Bradford had taken the majority of first-team reps and has a chance to start. That's not consistent with any video, beat writer reports, or comments from Zimmer this week but notable nonetheless. I still think it's a stretch for Bradford to play but I'll adjust his expectation to game-time decision to account for this morning's note.

    Others of note: Cam Newton
(shoulder), Alex Smith (ankle), Blake Bortles (shoulder), Josh McCown (shoulder), and Ben Roethlisberger have practiced, are not listed on the game status report, and are expected to play without limitation. Andrew Luck (shoulder) has been declared out. I'll update return to play expectations on all inactive players in Monday's column.

    RUNNING BACK

MELVIN GORDON | KNEE | Not Listed | EXPECTED TO PLAY

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Gordon fully practiced this week and is expected to see a full workload. Last week, there was some concern the Chargers would lighten Gordon's usage by giving Branden Oliver more passing down snaps and change-of-pace work. Although Gordon had only ten rushes, the Chargers had only 13 total rushing attempts and his limited duty was game script dependent rather than game plan dependent. Oliver has been declared out with a hamstring injury this week. The light Week 4 duty, a full week of practice, and the absence of Oliver all argue strongly for a high workload for Gordon.

    Jay Ajayi
    | Knee | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Full

Ajayi had a day off on Thursday but otherwise fully practiced as the Dolphins continue to limit his practice time during the week. Miami followed through on plans to rest Ajayi on some passing downs last week against the Saints and he played on just 62% of the team's offensive snaps. For comparison, Ajayi played 94% of Miami's snaps in Week 2, then 52% in the two-score loss to the Jets in Week 3.

The Dolphins are at home this week against the Titans. Ajayi remains the primary back in all base offense and red zone alignments and will see as much workload as the game script allows.

    Carlos Hyde
    | Hip | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Full

Hyde has been limited in practice with an oblique muscle strain over the past two weeks but it hasn't limited his workload and performance much. Hyde out-snapped Matt Brieda 56 to 14 last week after being listed questionable. He returned to a full practice on Friday and is not listed on the team's game status report this week. Breida is also expected to play through an ankle injury; he shouldn't be seen as any more of a threat than last week.

    Ty Montgomery
    | Ribs | Doubtful | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

The Packers sounded optimistic this week but likely knew Montgomery would be doubtful -- at best -- from the start of practice this week. Montgomery practiced with a padded vest all week but multiple rib fractures are too limiting to play through in less than two weeks. Expect Montgomery to be on the inactive list on Sunday.

    Wendell Smallwood
    | Knee | Questionable | Unlikely to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

Smallwood is reportedly dealing with swelling in his right knee. Les Bowen reported the condition is likely related to residual laxity in Smallwood's knee after last season's MCL sprain. If that's accurate, Smallwood's absence shouldn't be extended but he'll be at risk of a flare-up in future weeks. It's unlikely Smallwood will play after not practicing all week but the Eagles did not add another running back to the roster. Consider Smallwood a game-time decision but I think he's more doubtful than questionable.

    Others of note: LeSean McCoy
(wrist), Ezekiel Elliott (chest), Leonard Fournette (ankle), Ameer Abdullah (ankle), Jonathan Stewart, Frank Gore, Jamaal Williams (knee), Marlon Mack (shoulder), Jerick McKinnon (ankle), Orleans Darkwa (back), and Matt Breida (ankle) have practiced, are not listed on the game status report, and are expected to play without limitation. Matt Forte (toe), Branden Oliver (hamstring), Paul Perkins (ribs), and Dwayne Washington (quad) have been declared out, with C.J. Prosise (ankle) doubtful and likely inactive. I'll update return to play expectations on all inactive players in Monday's column.

    WIDE RECEIVER

Odell Beckham | Ankle / Finger | Not Listed | Expected to Play

    Practice Participation: Wed - Limited |Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Images of Beckham's dislocated index finger weren't for the squeamish last week but the injury isn't a major issue. Beckham may not be attempting one-handed catches with his left hand this week but the finger can be taped and protected and shouldn't limit him much. I had more concern for the late fourth quarter aggravation of his mid-grade high ankle sprain. Thankfully, the tweak proved to be a minor setback and Beckham showed enough in a full week of limited practice to keep himself off the game status report. While he may not be 100% recovered, Beckham has played 123 snaps and been targeted 28 times over the past two weeks. He looks to be healthy enough for another significant workload.

    Doug Baldwin
    | Groin | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Baldwin was limited to just 69% of Seattle's offensive snaps last week. After Wednesday's DNP, there was reason to worry the Seahawks would again need to limit their top receiver. Baldwin returned to a full Thursday and Friday practice -- something the Seahawks have not done with veteran players with injury concerns this season -- and is not listed on the game status report. Barring an unexpected setback during pregame warmups, Baldwin should be ready for his pre-injury workload this week.

    Michael Crabtree
    | Chest | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Crabtree's lung contusion healed and he was cleared for contact by mid-week. There's no indication Crabtree suffered any other bony or soft tissue injury to the area overlying his lung injury and the full Thursday and Friday practices are reassuring. Expect Crabtree to see his usual number of routes run and targets.

    Davante Adams
    | Concussion | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Adams traveled to Dallas on Saturday after clearing the concussion protocol and will play this week. Some may question how Adams was able to practice in pads earlier this week and clear protocol so quickly after a violent hit and losing consciousness last Thursday. It's important to remember the medical community no longer grades concussions. Loss of consciousness used to suggest a higher-grade injury. Studies of athletes who suffer concussions show other symptoms are associated with a higher risk of prolonged recovery -- amnesia, in particular. Whatever symptoms Adams may have had cleared quickly enough to allow him to progress through the later exercise stages of the protocol by mid-week. The Packers' medical staff, who are known to be cautious and deliberate, felt comfortable sending Adams to an independent neurologist and he's been cleared. Hopefully, Adams will avoid future injury.

    Tyrell Williams
    | Neck | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Jeremy Maclin | Hand | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

It's odd to see players listed questionable after a full week of practice. Both the Ravens and Chargers have a history of using the questionable tag as probable in some cases. There's been no indication Maclin or Williams are at risk of missing this week's game. Both should see their usual workload with minimal risk of in-game aggravation.

    John Brown
    | Quad | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

In his first game after missing time with recurrent quad soreness, Brown played 53 snaps. More importantly, he was able to practice all week. The Cardinals will likely continue to limit Brown's practice reps and his game usage but expect him to continue to see 60-70% of Arizona's offensive snaps.

    J.J. Nelson
    | Hamstring | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Nelson has been limited in practice and listed questionable in each of the past three weeks. Expect him to be active. Nelson played fewer snaps last week, however, and is at risk of continued rotation this week.

    Marqise Lee
    | Ribs | Questionable | Game-time Decision

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Limited

Doug Marrone was encouraged by Lee's limited Friday practice but acknowledged Lee's injury was painful. Lee did not speak with the media and has been listed questionable. He's still considered a game-time decision as of Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars ruled out starting center Brandon Linder due to illness on Saturday but did not downgrade Lee before their trip to Pittsburgh. Expect the medical staff to evaluate Lee in pregame and decide if pain management and added padding will be enough for Lee to play effectively.

    Marquise Goodwin
    | Concussion | Questionable | Likely to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Goodwin has an extensive history of concussions but progressed quickly through the return-to-play protocol this week. Kyle Shanahan told reporters he would "be surprised if [Goodwin] wasn't ready to go" this week.

    Kenny Britt
    | Knee / Groin | Doubtful | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

The Browns listed Britt doubtful after he missed practice all week and Hue Jackson sounding pessimistic on the wide receiver's status. Expect Britt to be inactive.

    Others of note: Sammy Watkins
(illness), Amari Cooper (knee), Kelvin Benjamin (knee), Brandon Marshall (toe), Robby Anderson, Brandon LaFell (knee) have practiced, are not listed on the game status report, and are expected to play without limitation. Jordan Matthews (thumb), Corey Davis (hamstring), Kenny Golladay (hamstring), John Ross (knee), and Mike Williams (back) have been declared out. I'll update return to play expectations on all inactive players in Monday's column.

    TIGHT END

Benjamin Watson | Calf | Questionable | Likely to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Full

Watson followed the same practice participation last week and played over 40 snaps against the Steelers. I expect Watson to be active again this week.

    Others of note
: Jimmy Graham (ankle), Charles Clay, Jesse James (shoulder), and Tyler Kroft (neck/knee) have practiced, are not listed on the game status report, and are expected to play without limitation. Tyler Eifert (back), Jack Doyle (concussion, neck) and Maxx Williams (ankle) have been declared out. I'll update return to play expectations on all inactive players in Monday's column.

    DEFENSIVE PLAYER NOTES

    EDGE:

The Browns will have Myles Garrett for the first time this week. It's unlikely he'll play full time right away but he's had two weeks of practice and should be able to contribute immediately.

Jason Pierre-Paul was adamant he'd play through his chronic shoulder issues. Olivier Vernon told reporters he wanted to play but sounded resigned to the possibility he'd need time to recover after aggravating his ankle sprain in last week's game.

Cliff Avril has been declared out and may not be able to return immediately after Seattle's Week 6 bye either.
    DEFENSIVE LINE:
Mike Daniels told reporters he was good to go. He'll give the Green Bay front a big boost.
    LINEBACKER:

Jatavis Brown managed only a limited Friday practice and is questionable at best. Anthony Lynn would only say Brown would be evaluated at game time.

Sean Lee is reportedly doing everything possible to play this week but managed only light work on the rehab field. He's unlikely to play. The Cowboys are expected to get Anthony Hitchens back.

Jarrad Davis is out of the concussion protocol but listed on this week's injury report with a neck injury. He's likely to play but was inactive in a similar situation last week.
    DEFENSIVE BACK

Kurt Coleman is the only notable list to this week's list of inactive defensive backs. Jeremy Lane and Lamarcus Joyner are unlikely to play.

    OFFENSIVE LINE NOTES

    Sunday Update

GB - WR Davante Adams expected to play

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (concussion) is expected to play in Week 5 because he has cleared the concussion protocol, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Adams was absolutely rocked by Bears LB Danny Trevathan but he had 10 days to get through the concussion protocol. If he plays against the Cowboys on Sunday, consider Adams a deep flex option. His return would also negate most any fantasy potential for Geronimo Allison.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise ruled out

    Source: Seahawks.com

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (ankle) has been downgraded to out for the team's Week 5 game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Those who picked up J.D. McKissic as a waiver wire claim could plug him in as a 'what the heck' flex in Week 5. McKissic will play Prosise's role as a change-of-pace back behind Thomas Rawls and Eddie Lacy. With another good game (two touchdowns last week), McKissic could take over even if/when Prosise is healthy.

TEN - WR Corey Davis on schedule

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (hamstring) is on schedule in his recovery from his hamstring injury but is still considered week-to-week, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Davis will have missed three games so far this year as he's already been declared out for Week 5. The talented rookie is not a must hold for fantasy owners who are in need at the position...especially now that bye weeks have started.

MIN - RB Jerick McKinnon on track to play

    Source: Vikings.com
Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (ankle) was limited during practice Saturday, Oct. 7, but is not on the injury report for Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Vikings play on Monday night against the Bears, and they will be featuring a new-look backfield with rookie RB Dalvin Cook (knee) done for the year. McKinnon will continue to serve as a change-of-pace back but Latavius Murray now takes over as the primary back for the Vikings.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford listed as questionable

    Source: Vikings.com

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford (knee) fully participated in practice Saturday, Oct. 7, but is listed as questionable for Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is on track to play on Monday night against the Bears. He's missed three games with this knee injury, but has a good matchup against a Bears pass defense that is getting torched in recent week. They have allowed six touchdowns to opposing receivers in their last three games. It could be a good night for Bradford and WRs Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. Fantasy owners can't forget how much Bradford loves throwing to TE Kyle Rudolph.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant questionable for Week 5

    Source: Steelers.com - Burt Lauten

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant (illness) was added to the injury report Saturday, Oct. 7, and is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's never a good sign to be added to the injury report late in the week..and especially on Saturday. Bryant could play against the Jaguars on Sunday, but make sure to double check his availability in the morning before the games start. We like Bryant as a WR3/flex option in Week 5.

IND - More work expected for QB Andrew Luck

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is expected to receive more work during practice next week, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the expected plan for the star quarterback as he continues to work his way back from this injury. There is still no timetable for Luck's return, but we could see him back on the field soon...perhaps Week 7 at the earliest.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette's role being worked out

    Source: NFL.com

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette's touches are 'not an exact science,' according to head coach Doug Marrone, but he said they will continue to work on figuring it out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette is playing about 39 snaps per game, but his touches vary depending on whether or not the Jaguars are in the game. If they can control the pace, Fournette gets a heavy workload as the centerpiece of the offense. He's a RB1 for fantasy owners every week.

NYG - RB Wayne Gallman could lead backfield

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Wayne Gallman could end up with a majority of the carries against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what we're expecting with Paul Perkins out. It's not like Perkins was doing anything with his starting role for the Giants, so Gallman has a chance to impress and perhaps even keep the top job. The rookie from Clemson is a swift runner with the ability to get to and through the hole quickly. Fantasy owners should consider him a RB3/flex option against the Chargers in Week 5.

    Monday Update

NYG - Odell Beckham has broken fibula

Source: NFL Network - Kimberly Jones

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (leg) suffered a broken left fibula in the Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, sources said Sunday, Oct. 8. It's uncertain if there is any ligament damage, and the receiver will have an MRI on Monday, Oct. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beckham is likely out for at least 4-6 weeks and could be put on injured reserve. It's a massive blow for the Giants offense and makes Eli Manning a dicey quarterback to start against Denver next week and going forward.

NYG - WR Brandon Marshall, WR Sterling Shepard injured

    Source: Giants.com

New York Giants WR Brandon Marshall (ankle) and WR Sterling Shepard (ankle) suffered ankle injuries in Week 5 and are considered questionable to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants running game is getting on track against the poor tackling Chargers defense and they'll need it with the passing gam short-handed today.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon hits century mark

    Source: The Associated Press

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon rushed 20 times for 105 yards in Week 5 against the New York Giants and he added six receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers restored the original gameplan of running the offense through Gordon and it worked, as he was strong as a receiver and a runner today. He's a strong RB1 after a small hiccup likely due to knee soreness and poor game scripts.

BAL - RB Terrance West leaves with calf injury

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West (calf) left the Week 5 game against the Oakland Raiders due to a calf injury and he was unable to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Javorius Allen took over the majority of carries and was a good fantasy play despite being ineffective. This injury should remove West as an obstacle for Allen and Collins value for the near future.

CAR - TE Ed Dickson shines in Week 5

    Source: The Associated Press

Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson posted five receptions for a career-high 175 yards on five targets in the Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dickson got free multiple times and Cam Newton made excellent subtle throws to him, sometimes on the move. He has the demonstrated ceiling to be worth a bye week start and waiver wire add.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor productive in Week 5

    Source: NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor caught four passes for 93 yards and one touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Agholor had his second long score of the year on a play that Carson Wentz extended. Agholor also eluded a tackler after the catch to finish the score. He's got what the heck flex value going forward on the extended play chemistry he has built with Wentz.

NYG - RB Orleans Darkwa injures calf

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Orleans Darkwa (calf) suffered a calf injury on his touchdown run in the Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wayne Gallman should be the primary back next week against the Broncos, but they have been the best run defense in the league and the Giants have been one of the worst run offenses. Gallman is worth a waiver add, but not for next week.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington catches nine passes

    Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington caught nine passes for 65 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ellington has emerged as a favorite short-range receiving option for Carson Palmer, and he fits well in an offense that often plays from behind and has no running game. He's a PPR flex, if not an RB2 against Tampa Bay next week.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette has monster day

    Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette rushed 28 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he added one catch for three yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette had a 90-yard score to ice the game. His value is up as the Jaguars had their most impressive performance yet. He'll be a strong RB1 against the Rams next week.

CLE - WR Ricardo Louis records 71 yards

    Source: NFL.com

Cleveland Browns WR Ricardo Louis caught five passes for 71 yards against the New York Jets in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Louis was Kevin Hogan's favorite target and could have end of the bench desperation play value going forward.

CLE - Kevin Hogan plays well in relief

    Source: NFL.com

Cleveland Browns QB Kevin Hogan went 16-for-19 for 194 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the New York Jets in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hogan was better than Deshone Kizer, and not by a small margin. It wasn't enough for the Browns to win, but if Hogan had played the whole game, he probably would have led them to a win. That will be what Hue Jackson has to think about heading into the matchup with Houston next week.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker out for game

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (ankle) will not return to the team's Week 5 game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Second-year disappointment Leonte Carroo will get more work, but the Miami passing game is so anemic that it doesn't matter for fantasy, maybe even dynasty.

BUF - TE Charles Clay carted off

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) was carted off the field after suffering a knee injury during the team's Week 5 game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nick O'Leary will be the Bills primary tight end with Clay out, but this leaves a vacuum in the downfield passing game that is already without Jordan Matthews.
