    Tuesday Update

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman in concussion protocol

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (concussion) was out of practice Monday, Aug. 14, and he is in the concussion protocol. He has been ruled out for the second preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He left Sunday's practice with what was originally called a 'heat' issue. The team will wisely be cautious with their star running back. At this point, he should still be ready for the start of the regular season...but make sure to keep track of his status as we go through the month of August.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed had a fracture

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe) disclosed that he had a fracture in his toe Sunday, Aug. 13. 'It's the cleats more than anything,' Reed said. 'The cleats prior to this were more narrow and pressing on the bone that I had the fracture in. These cleats are wider and the orthotics are softer so I don't feel it.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is trying new orthodics to help his toe issue. He believes that he'll return to action next week and that he could even play in one of the team's remaining preseason games. Reed is a stud tight end for fantasy owners, but make sure to snare a good backup at the position if you select him.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette won't play Thursday

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (foot) will not play Thursday, Aug. 17, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of his foot injury, according to head coach Doug Marrone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is no surprise as Fournette has missed the last two practices with this injury he suffered in the team's first preseason game. Marrone has previously stated the team will proceed with caution when it comes to their 2017 first-round pick. Fournette was plagued by ankle/foot injuries during his last year in college at LSU. If healthy, Fournette has the ability to be a RB1 for fantasy owners. Reports out of training camp seem to indicate the Jags will rotate three backs (Fournette, Chris Ivory, T.J. Yeldon) initially at the start of the regular season.

HOU - QB Deshaun Watson works with first-team

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson took first-team repetitions in practice Monday, Aug. 14, but head coach Bill O'Brien downplayed it saying that's how the repetitions lined up.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson is the team's future franchise quarterback...or at least that's what they hope after they aggressively moved up in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft to select the talented passer from Clemson. He's competing with Tom Savage for the starting job, but we have to think that Watson would end up starting at some point this year.

BUF - WR Jordan Matthews week to week

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills WR Jordan Matthews (chest) has a chip fracture in his sternum, and the team is calling his status 'week to week.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Matthews here. He suffered this injury on the first day of practice with his new team. With Sammy Watkins (Rams) traded away, we might see rookie Zay Jones open the year as the top target in the Bills passing attack. Our Dr. Jene Bramel says, "We may not see Matthews in a preseason game, but he should be practicing in advance of Week 1."

IND - QB Andrew Luck not a lock for Week 1

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) might not be ready for the season opener, according to owner Jim Irsay, but Irsay said Luck will be ready around the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Same as it ever was. It's a concern that everyone is being so clandestine when it comes to information on Luck. We HOPE he's ready for Week 1, but that may not be the case. When healthy, Luck is a top-5 fantasy quarterback. His ADP keeps falling as more of these reports come out where his status for Week 1 is a mystery.

DAL - Dallas to use committee in backfield?

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden rushed six times for 28 yards in a 13-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 12, but Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com believes McFadden left some yards on the field and thinks the Cowboys could go with a committee approach while RB Ezekiel Elliott is serving his suspension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden would likely be the lead back while Elliott is out, but he won't be the only one toting the rock. Earlier reports indicated the team could move on from Alfred Morris, but that might have changed since word of Elliott's suspension. Unlike other backfields (Tennessee springs to mind), there's no stud RB in the waiting behind the starter.

NYJ - QB Christian Hackenberg works with starters

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg received some snaps with the first-team offense during practice Monday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hackenberg was so bad last year that he couldn't make it onto the field as a rookie. He's better this year according to reports, but there was only one way for him to go. Hackenberg, a second-round pick in 2016, is competing with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty for the starting job.

MIA - QB Jay Cutler has chance to play Thursday

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he has not decided if QB Jay Cutler will play in the preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Thursday, Aug. 17, but is leaning toward playing Cutler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cutler knows the offense, so that's not going to be a problem for him. As the team's starter, Cutler needs to build a rapport with the weapons around him in Miami.

HOU - WR Braxton Miller has sprained ankle

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller (ankle) is dealing with a mild ankle sprain, but his prognosis is positive.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a mild sprain, but it doesn't sound like a high ankle sprain. If it was a high ankle sprain then that's something that could take over a month to properly heal. It sounds like Miller could be available much sooner than that. With Will Fuller (collarbone) already banged up, the Texans are a bit thin at the top of the WR depth chart behind star DeAndre Hopkins.

PHI - Decision on RB Ryan Mathews coming soon?

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews arrived in Philadelphia Monday, Aug. 14, which could generate a decision on his status with the Eagles in the near future.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews has to first get healthy, then the team should cut him. He has been recovering from offseason neck surgery and needs to be cleared so they can move on and not owe him an injury settlement.

TEN - RB DeMarco Murray revving up workload

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray (hamstring) will return to practice this week and 'do more than he did last week,' head coach Mike Mularkey said Sunday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans can ease Murray back into action so this hamstring injury is not aggravated. By Week 1 of the regular season, Murray should be good to go and a set-it-and-forget-it starter for your fantasy team.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates hopes to return this week

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Joe Rutter

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (knee) said hopes to be activated from Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates has speed and run-after-the-catch ability....but he also has problems with concentration and will drop too many passes. He'll compete for the no3 WR job in Pittsburgh, but we think rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster ends up winning that spot behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant.

LAC - WR Mike Williams pegged for October

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) is slated for an October debut as he returns from a back injury, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has been running on grass according to reports and is progressing well from this injury. However, this report indicates he's not done well enough to be ready for the start of the regular season. This sounds like Williams could be a strong candidate for the PUP list when the season starts. A move to the PUP would force Williams out for the first six weeks of the regular season.

JAX - WR Marqise Lee has high ankle sprain

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (ankle) is out with a high ankle sprain. He will attempt to return before Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

For a speedy guy like Lee, a high ankle sprain can be devastating. That injury takes over a month to properly heal and it can be aggravated with the slightest tweak. We're not rushing to add the no3 WR in the Jags passing game, so Lee's injury doesn't have a big fantasy impact.

DEN - RB Jamaal Charles may be scratch against 49ers

Source: The Denver Post - Nick Kosmider

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may not play in the second exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 19, against the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He didn't play in the team's first game against the Bears either. Broncos head coach Vance Joseph says they have a plan for Charles, but he won't reveal what that plan is. Now, it just seems the plan for Charles is to rest him as much as possible. He's fully cleared to participate in practice, but Charles rarely receives much work in team drills. That has slowly ramped up...a little bit...since the start of training camp.

PIT - RB James Conner on track to play

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Chris Adamski

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) said he felt great after doing individual work and 7-on-7 drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 13, and he is on track to play in the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In deeper leagues, we are handcuffing Conner to Le'Veon Bell. If anything happens to Bell, Conner is the type of blue-collar back who can thrive with a large workload. We'd project him as a RB2 for fantasy owners if the rookie from PITT was the starter due to a Bell injury. Keep him on your waiver wire speed dial in more shallow leagues.

IND - WR Phillip Dorsett may return soon

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts WR Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) could return to practice in the next few days, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dorsett has been a career disappointment. The speedy wideout needs to get healthy and start impressing with his team. His dynasty stock is super low, so add him if you believe he can bounce back.

CIN - WR John Ross full go in practice

    Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Monday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ross is a speedy rookie who can easily take the top off the defense. He can be used in a way like Tyreek Hill was used for the Chiefs last year, but Ross is a better route runner out of the gate. It doesn't mean he'll produce like Hill did last year (15th WR in fantasy in 2016), but just know that Ross has what scouts call 'adios' speed...and the Bengals would be wise to feature him as much as possible. He's WR56 (12.10) right now in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - TE Julius Thomas had tight back

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Updating an earlier report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (back) received the veteran's day off Monday, Aug. 14, after his back tightened up.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is talented, and we've already seen him produce at a high level under Adam Gase when the two were with the Broncos......BUT, Thomas has yet to play a full 16-game season in his pro career. Now entering year seven in the NFL, we'd be startled if he gets a full season in 2017. Draft him as a TE2 with TE1 upside in certain matchups...especially is QB Jay Cutler shows a propensity to target him if/when Thomas flashes in the preseason.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood back at practice

Source: The Delaware County Times - Martin Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smallwood is trying to get into the mix behind battering ram LeGarrette Blount. The Eagles have a collection of change-of-pace backs, including Darren Sproles and rookie DJ Pumphrey. If healthy, Smallwood might be able to shoehorn his way into some sort of role.

SEA - WR Paul Richardson injures shoulder

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Gregg Bell

Seattle Seahawks WR Paul Richardson (shoulder) exited the preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers with a shoulder injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's always something with Richardson. He's a freak athlete who can make crazy catches (see last year in the postseason), but Richardson has an injury history that reads like Infinite Jest dating back to his college days at Colorado. We love his 'wow' factor, but Richardson won't be a fantasy force unless he can shake his ever-present injury bug.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson still not ready

Source: The Washington Post - Master Tesfatsion

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) is still four or five days away from returning to practice, head coach Jay Gruden said Sunday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We just want to see Doctson healthy. The talent is there for him to be a significant part of Washington's passing attack but he always seems to be banged up. Right now, we love drafting Jamison Crowder as that primary weapon at wide receiver for QB Kirk Cousins. Doctson...when healthy...is merely a 'lottery ticket' pick for the end of your draft.

LAR - WR Tavon Austin not practicing this week

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will not participate in practice this week because of a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
With the addition of WR Sammy Watkins, Austin moves down the pecking order with the Rams. His fantasy prospects weren't that great before the addition of Watkins and now he's best left to the waiver wire. Head coach Sean McVay said the team is not sure if Austin will play in any preseason games.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott appeals suspension

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has officially appealed his six-game suspension, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was the next step in the process. Once Elliott was suspended six games by the NFL we all knew this was going to happen. A hearing must be scheduled within 10 days of the appeal. Some people think Elliott could get a reduced sentence but not an eliminated sentence. Stay tuned.

NYJ - WR Lucky Whitehead has broken foot

    Source: NewYorkJets.com

New York Jets WR Lucky Whitehead (foot) will be out for an extended period of time with a broken foot, according to head coach Todd Bowles. It is unclear at this point if Whitehead will need surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He should just start going with Rodney (his first name) instead of Lucky...he's been anything but over the last month. The Cowboys cut him in a case of mistaken identity, the Jets picked him up and now he's broken his foot.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews released

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating an earlier report, Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews was released Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews only needed to be cleared medically before the team released him. With injury problems and reports about a lack of confidence, we can't imagine Mathews getting a ton of interest on the open market.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi cleared

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (concussion) has been cleared from the concussion protocol Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will take it easy on Ajayi so he doesn't get concussed again. We should see his use in the preseason dwindle as the team prepares for the start of the regular season.

SEA - WR Paul Richardson ready by Week 1

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR Paul Richardson (shoulder) will be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1 of the preseason. There's no denying his talent...or his long injury history. Richardson is competing as a reserve receiver and doesn't have much redraft fantasy value. We like him in dynasty leagues but these injuries keep his long-term outlook low.

TB - TE O.J. Howard to focus mostly on blocking?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard will most likely make his mark as a blocker - and not a receiver - early in the season, according to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This report should put a damper on fantasy owners and their excitement about the rookie from Alabama. He's talented..no doubt..and a big/strong/fast presence that QB Jameis Winston could eventually rely on. However, he didn't do much in his college career unless he was playing Clemson...then he exploded for HUGE games. Howard has natural talent but is going to be splitting time at the position with Cameron Brate...a breakout player for the Bucs last year. We love Howard in dynasty, but are taking a 'wait and see' approach with the rookie in redraft leagues.

DEN - RB Jamaal Charles won't play Saturday

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not play Saturday, Aug. 19, against the San Francisco 49ers, according to head coach Vance Joseph. He will play in Week 3 of the preseason, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is fully cleared to participate in Broncos camp but he rarely does much of anything in practice. Joseph says the decision to hold him back is on himself and that Charles wanted to play in the first preseason game against the Bears. If Charles can be a shadow of his former self, he could make the team as a reserve runner. If his knees are shot, then Charles might not make the 53-man roster.

MIA - QB Jay Cutler to debut

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins QB Jay Cutler will make his preseason debut Thursday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Get those smokin Jay Cutler memes ready to go. Cutler knows the system and he shouldn't need that many reps in the second preseason game.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake in concussion protocol

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (concussion) is in the concussion protocol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's the second Dolphins runner to be in the concussion protocol during training camp. Starter Jay Ajayi was just cleared from the protocol after getting banged up earlier in the month.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery misses practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery (leg) missed practice Tuesday, Aug. 15, due to a soft tissue injury on his lower leg. Montgomery added that the ailment is nothing to worry about.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sounds like some sort of bruise. If Montgomery isn't worried about it, then we aren't either. Montgomery is the top back for the Packers, but rookie Jamaal Williams should push for playing time in 2017.

NYJ - RB Bilal Powell participates in practice

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) participated in 7-on-7 drills Tuesday, Aug. 15, after being absent from practice for about a week and a half.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Powell is back in action after missing some time, and so long as there are no setbacks he should be ready for Week 1. In fact, Powell could get some time as the Jets lead back during the preseason...perhaps in the third week. From a fantasy perspective, Powell is a low-end RB2 for fantasy purposes as he'll split time with Matt Forte. Right now, Powell is going off the board at RB25 (5.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

OAK - WR Amari Cooper returns to practice

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Michael Gehlken

Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper (leg) was back on the practice field Tuesday, Aug. 15. He had missed six straight practices and seven of the Raiders' last eight practices.

Keep an eye on Cooper as the season draws closer. He's a top-10 fantasy WR if healthy, and Cooper could push for double-digit touchdowns (and over 1,200 yards receiving) in 2017. His current ADP is WR8 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ARI - WR John Brown will have full practice

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (quadriceps) will be full go in practice Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"Smoke" just needs to stay healthy and he can have plenty of fantasy value. His speed helps him take the top off the defense, and Brown is plenty dangerous after the catch. If healthy, he could outperform his current ADP of WR43 (9.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin practicing again

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (leg) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks are getting a bit healthier at the wide receiver position (Paul Richardson practiced too). Baldwin is underappreciated by some fantasy owners, but he shouldn't be. Grab him at the end of the second round in your draft and watch him push for WR1 numbers once again in 2017.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins wants to stay in Washington

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins does not want to sign with another team when he becomes a free agent next offseason. Cousins loves playing for the Redskins and hopes to remain there for the entirety of his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Does he REALLY believe that? Or would he love to reunite with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco? Washington has not shown they are committed long term to Cousins as they keep slapping him with the franchise tag. They can actually do it again for a third season next year, but the price would be over $30 million. Cousins should get plenty of long-term offers if he hits the open market in 2018.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman needs more time

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (hamstring) is dealing with a Grade-2 hamstring strain and will likely be sidelined for at least two more weeks. He has already missed two weeks due to the injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman's pro career has been set back by injuries. He's a speedy receiver who can fly down the field and track the ball well...at least he was in college at UCF. The 2015 first-round pick has talent but these injuries keep piling up.

CAR - WR Curtis Samuel nearing return to full practice

    Source: Panthers.com - Bill Voth

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) was able to participate in individual drills Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Samuel needs to get back out there when he's close to full strength. Not only does he need to establish chemistry with his quarterback, the rookie from Ohio State needs to work on becoming a more savvy route runner. Samuel is dangerous and can break ankles in the open field, but he's not setting up defenders with great routes.

PHI - TE Trey Burton's usage to increase

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Turron Davenport

Philadelphia Eagles TE Trey Burton is expected to see more targets out of the slot after the team traded WR Jordan Matthews. Burton and Wentz are close friends, and the two have a rapport on the field. Burton received 36 targets in the last six games last year, and he caught 23 of them.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burton was a player to emerge at the end of last year. The addition of weapons like WRs Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith mean the targets won't be thick. Add in a reportedly surging Nelson Agholor (and oh yeah, Zach Ertz) and you can see how Burton's path to fantasy relevance is murky...even with more targets out of the slot.

PHI - QB Nick Foles won't play Thursday

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Zach Berman

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles (elbow) will not suit up for the team's next preseason game Thursday, August 17, against the Buffalo Bills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the second preseason game, so starting QB Carson Wentz should be in for a quarter or so. Matt McGloin should get more work with Foles out of action. Foles hopes to play the week after opposite the Miami Dolphins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins is getting a fresh start with his new team. So long as he is healthy, Watkins can be a primary weapon for second-year QB Jared Goff. He's WR23 (4.11) in 12-team PPR leagues right now.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He missed the preseason opener against the Pats and the team is likely to ramp up his participation this week. Their second game of the preseason is on Thursday and the status of Hurns is unclear.

TEN - WR Eric Decker sprains ankle

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Eric Decker (ankle) suffered an ankle injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So long as it's not a high-ankle sprain then we should see Decker shut down for just a bit to recover. Head coach Mike Mularkey said he does not believe Decker's injury is serious.

DET - WR Kenny Golladay works with starters

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay worked exclusively with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Aug. 16, when they lined up in three-receiver sets. He lined up as an outside receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Golladay is a talented rookie WR from Northern Illinois that the Lions selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. He's fast, can get by the defense quickly and has the body control to make difficult catches. The no3 WR for the Lions isn't a fantasy force, but we love the dynasty potential of this rookie.

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Powell is back in action and the Jets will use him in a RBBC with Matt Forte. That committee limits the fantasy values of both backs. Powell is RB25 (5.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to get Forte out there when he's not at full strength. The seasoned veteran doesn't need a ton of reps in the preseason. Forte is backing up Bilal Powell but will earn snaps in a RBBC. Forte is RB49 (11.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CHI - QB Mike Glennon the strong favorite

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Glennon should be the starter at the beginning of the regular season. The team spent a lot of money to add him in free agency earlier this year. However, we don't think Glennon finishes the season as the starter. At some point, rookie first-round pick Mitchell Trubisky should take over. He's the future of the team and has looked great so far in the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is just being careful with their star wideout. Sanders fell on his shoulder and the day was over for him. We should see Sanders on Saturday night against the 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in 2015, Dorsett has been a disappointment to this point in his career. He's yet to play a full 16-game season, and Dorsett's 33 catches last year was a career high. We're not expecting or projecting him to do much more than that this season.

Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku (back) plans to play Monday, Aug. 21, after missing the preseason opener.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Njoku has been struggling so far but we still appreciate his dynasty value. The rookie from "The U" has drawn multiple comparisons to Greg Olsen (Panthers), but the transition to the NFL takes some time for tight ends. We like him in dynasty, but there's little to look for from Njoku in redraft leagues this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates is going to compete for the no3 WR job behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. His main competition for the job is rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster. Coates is fast and physical, but he's got a bad problem of dropping too many passes. He'll have to stay healthy and show better concentration if he wants to earn a role in the high-powered Steelers offense.

The Colts backfield is an...interesting...one. Frank Gore is the starter, and the ageless wonder should be the team's leading rusher. Mack is a player only dynasty owners should be targeting at this time.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles indicated his arm was 'fine' when speaking to reporters Tuesday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone caused a bit of a stir when he said he rested Bortles over the weekend because the quarterback looked like he had a tired arm. Bortles is fine, but the team wants to run the ball more this year and that limits his fantasy value. Fantasy owners already don't trust Bortles due to his propensity to make mistakes and underperform.

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins sits out again

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 15, and he has not practiced since Monday, Aug. 7. Head coach Bill O'Brien indicated that Hopkins is 'doing fine,' and has previously likened Hopkins' practice schedule leading up to the regular season as being on a 'pitch count.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a bit of a concern for fantasy owners. Monitor Hopkins as we continue through the preseason. If the veteran WR is on a snap count, then he should be limited in Week 3 of the preseason (the dress rehearsal for the regular season) and is unlikely to play in the preseason finale.

    Friday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell to report before season

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will report to the Steelers prior to the commencement of the regular season, although it is unclear exactly when he will report, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We always feel a bit leery when players miss an entire preseason. You never know what shape they will be in and whether they will be truly ready for the season. Bell is a veteran, so we know he should be mentally prepared. Hopefully, he is physically prepared as well. Most Fantasy GM's are betting that way, making him the second overall pick in their fantasy drafts.

IND - WR Donte Moncrief still limited

Indianapolis Colts WR Donte Moncrief (shoulder) is still limited to only individual drills even though he returned to practice last week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We said it not long ago, if Moncrief could avoid having this shoulder issue linger we wouldn't be worried. It's lingering, so we're worried. Moncrief's biggest problem from a career standpoint has been injuries, and that appears to still be the case. He's coming off the board as the 35th wide receiver, which is about right between the injuries and the uncertainty around Andrew Luck.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed back at practice soon?

Source: The Washington Times - Nora Princiotti

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe) said he's hoping to return to practice either Monday, Aug. 21, or Tuesday, Aug. 22. Reed added that the orthotics he's been wearing have helped his toe injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hoping he comes back soon as well, but there's no rush. He's the top tight end option there and it's not like he's new to the playbook. On the other hand, Reed was only healthy for ten weeks in 2016 and has yet to play a full season. When on the field he is outstanding. You just have to know there are weeks he will not be there. Reed is currently the 4th tight end going off the board in drafts, around the fifth round or so at an overall ADP of 46.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch getting more first-team work

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch has received 'considerably more' first-team reps this week than he ever had during training camp. In a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, August 16, there were five 'team' periods of 11-on-11 football, with Lynch getting three and QB Trevor Siemian receiving the other two. It was also 'pretty much that way' during the team's practices over the prior two days.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is going to continue to be a battle throughout the preseason, but we've long felt that Lynch was the guy. He's John Elway's dude, so he will get the chance to grab the job especially as Trevor Siemian is as average as he is. We won't be grabbing either one as a fantasy starter or backup, but you still need to keep an eye on the battle as it impacts some important players on offense.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls to miss preseason game

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) will be sidelined for Week 2 of the preseason with a minor ankle ailment. RB Eddie Lacy will start in his place.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls has been getting the number one back work, so here's a chance for Lacey to show he should be getting more of those reps. Lacey is already going off the board and drafts well before Rawls. Lacey's ADP is 73 overall (29 back taken) while Rawls is being selected as the 131 player overall (46th back selected). That makes this running back battle crucial to watch for anyone thinking of investing in the Seattle backfield.

WAS - Coach happy with TE Niles Paul

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins TE Niles Paul has been one of the most impressive players during training camp, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Paul has worked at all of the tight end spots and can play fullback.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is notable for the fact that Jordan Reed is often hurt and has never completed an entire season. So Paul may end up as a pass-catching weapon for Washington at some point this season. This news really just lets you know that he'll be on the field a lot, though as long as Reed and the wide receivers are healthy his impact from a fantasy standpoint should be super low.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson may play Saturday

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) has a chance to play in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Saturday, Aug. 19, but will work out prior to the game before the team decides on his status.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doctson who was regarded by Washington as the top wide receiver in his draft class has to get on the field at some point because the team would like to see their first-round investment payoff. Terrelle Pryor and Jamison Crowder are both ahead of him right now, but if he can produce, the three of them plus Jordan Reed could make Kirk Cousins look very good this season. That many weapons will keep his ceiling low, hence his ADP of 156 overall, and 54th wide receiver off the board.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There are a lot of options for Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh, so Smith-Schuster should get on the field again as soon as he can. While we like the rookies ability and potential as a Red Zone threat we aren't expecting much this year.

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) will play in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Forte out Powell has his chance to shine. Given that he's going in the mid 6th to 7th round in fantasy drafts Powell could be a nice acquisition since he should get a lot of dump passes for whichever Jets quarterback wins the job. If Forte continues to be banged up it is going to be a good opportunity for Powell to get more carries as well. Unfortunately this Jets offense is pretty bad, otherwise, his ceiling would be better.

NYJ - Two Jets QBs split snaps

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg split snaps with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no reason for anyone but Christian Hackenberg to be starting for the Jets. They're not in contention for Super Bowl, they don't need a ton of wins, they need to find out whether they have a quarterback in Hackenberg. There is also no reason for either Jets quarterback to be on your fantasy team. They are all pretty much equally awful for Fantasy purposes. Avoid at all costs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As much as we too were hoping he could avoid surgery we aren't shocked he didn't. he is, after all, a Jets wide receiver, a group of guys that look like they could be snake bit this year. That being said we hope Enunwa heals quickly and comes back to be productive in 2018.

Maybe they're just preserving Forte for the season, but we're wondering if this is truly going to be Bilal Powell's year to shine. Currently going off the board as the No. 25 back in drafts, Powell is a nice dual threat who can run the rock as well as catch it.

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's potential reinstatement to the NFL is not being actively considered, according to commissioner Roger Goodell. Gordon is eligible to re-apply for reinstatement in September after being denied reinstatement three months ago.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could have a long, lengthy, intense discussion about whether it's right that Josh Gordon is still suspended or not, considering some active players and what they've done. But the reality is he's suspended, and can't find a way back right now. Considering his talent it's a tremendous waste, and we hope he will get his life off the field on track in case he never finds a way back on the field.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill having surgery Thursday

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) is undergoing reconstructive knee surgery Thursday, Aug. 17, according to sources. A full recovery is expected to take between 10 and 12 months. At that rate, Tannehill would at least be ready for training camp next offseason.

It's a long road back for Tannehill, and his security as starting quarterback for the Dolphins is questionable. This season was supposed to be a big step forward for him but instead, he's going to watch Jay Cutler step into his role. We get a look at Cutler tonight as the Dolphins play the Baltimore Ravens.

WAS - WR Jamison Crowder fully practicing

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder (hamstring) participated fully in practice Thursday, Aug. 17. He is expected to play in Washington' preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19, according to The Washington Post's Mike Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're anxious to see how Crowder plays, and get an idea how the offense looks with him as well as Terrelle Pryor in the mix. There's also Josh Doctson to consider. Right now Crowder is tracking as the number 32 receiver off the board.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford returns

Source: Chicago Tribune - Rich Campbell
Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Langford is going to be stuck behind Jordan Howard, barring an injury. Howard is going early in drafts (he is usually the sixth back off the board around the 12th pick overall) but we aren't wasting anything but a late pick with Langford as a handcuff.

LAR - WR Tavon Austin to be in similar role

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will be used in a similar role as he has in the past, according to general manager Les Snead. 'We haven't figured out how much he evolves as a receiver in this offense because he hasn't had a chance to play,' Snead said. 'Plan to see him used very similarly to how he's been used in the past. By that I mean, he's scored as a receiver, he's scored as a running back, he's scored as a returner. That's why we like him. He threatens the opposing team in many different ways. We've just got to get him healthy.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Austin hasn't been exciting at all in most fantasy formats, though he can be a boon to his GMs in Best Ball formats. With Sammy Watkins there now, one imagines that role won't expand. Then again, Watkins is usually hurt so Austin could emerge again at some point this season. We aren't betting on it though.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles dominating in garbage time

    Source: Fivethirtyeight.com - Michael Salfino

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has the highest passer rating (111) in the NFL over the last two seasons during garbage time (defined as the last five minutes of the fourth quarter and the losing team is down nine or more points), having completed 78-of-118 passes for 964 yards, with 12 touchdowns versus only four interceptions. Additionally, since 2015, 20.7 percent of Bortles' touchdown passes have come in these instances, which is nearly four times the average for the rest of the league.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garbage time or not, production is production in fantasy. Even with that being the case, though, Bortles is no more than a fringe backup quarterback for fantasy teams and isn't a guy Fantasy GMs are clamoring for in drafts.

CAR - No TE Greg Olsen extension imminent

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person
Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen's agent has talked with interim general manager Marty Hurney about a possible contract extension for Olsen, but no deal is imminent at this point, according to sources.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Olsen may be getting on in years but he's still a dynamic tight end, and Fantasy GMs know it based on his over ADP of 40, and regularly coming off the board as the third tight end in drafts. We expect another great season from him.

    Saturday Update

CAR - QB Cam Newton to sit against Tennessee

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not play versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19. Head coach Ron Rivera made the decision after the second of two joint practices against the Titans on Thursday, Aug. 17, and Newton did not throw in team drills during either practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There haven't been any glaring signs that the Panthers are worried about Newton, but if he can't go in the third preseason game, it might lower our expectations for him in his great matchup against the 49ers to open the season.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon injures hamstring

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (hamstring) suffered a left hamstring strain in the first quarter and did not return against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Aug. 17. Yeldon finished with two carries for two yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon might not be guaranteed a roster spot after Corey Grant carried over his impressive Week 17 from last year to the preseason opener last week.

PIT - Joshua Dobbs could move up depth chart

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs has a chance to earn the No. 2 quarterback job, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This probably has as much to do with Landry Jones development flatlining as it does with Dobbs being ahead of the curve. With Ben Roethlisberger's injury history, the #2 for the Steelers is likely to see the field this year.

PIT - RB James Conner set to make debut

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) is scheduled to play against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Aug. 20. Head coach Mike Tomlin expects to give Conner as much work as possible.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Conner can hold up in the last three preseason games, he should lock up the backup job behind LeVeon Bell which was golden for fantasy football when DeAngelo Williams (still unsigned) held it.

NYJ - RB Bilal Powell to suit up Saturday

    Source: NewYorkJets.com - Ethan Greenberg

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (neck) expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Aug. 19, while RB Matt Forte (hamstring) will not.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forte's hamstring could give Powell the starting job to open the season. Powell was a solid to strong RB1 when Forte was a non-factor last year, but that was on a Jets team that didn't seem to be playing for next year already.

JAX - PK Dan Carpenter to visit Jacksonville

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent PK Dan Carpenter (Bills) will work out for the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jason Myers has been too inconsistent for the team to trust. They might not keep Carpenter if Myers improves, but he is definitely a few steps out on the plank.

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor still the starter

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will remain atop the depth chart, according to post-game comments from head coach Sean McDermott Thursday, Aug. 17. Taylor struggled badly during the team's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The dreaded vote of confidence does not ensure that Taylor will remain the starter for long on a team that is looking to next year. Taylor could also be dangled as a trade target.

BAL - TE Maxx Williams makes an impression

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley
Baltimore Ravens TE Maxx Williams had two catches for 48 yards, including a 40-yard grab, against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, Aug. 17. It was the best that Williams has looked all summer, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams rumbled through the defense on his catch and run, and should provide more than Ben Watson or Nick Boyle can, although that might not be enough to be fantasy relevant. The 23-year-old is showing that he should be rostered in dynasty leagues.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles not a lock to start

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said QB Blake Bortles has to earn the starting quarterback job and indicated QB Chad Henne has a chance to take the job. Marrone said he is looking for the best person to lead the offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That Marrone is saying this after two preseason games is a sign that Bortles is in trouble. Henne is looking like the Week 1 starter unless Bortles turns this around.

JAX - WR Dede Westbrook finishes with 131 yards

    Source: NFL.com

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Dede Westbrook caught six passes for 131 yards in the preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Westbrook was a late-game star again this week. He is looking like a good bet to be in the top three receivers for this team next year, if not start. Allen Hurns is overpaid and Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee will be both free agents.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco will not practice yet

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (back) is not expected to practice this week because the team is sticking to their timeline for him, according to head coach John Harbaugh.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Ravens haven't signed another quarterback and Ryan Mallett hasn't been impressive so far in the preseason, so they must trust Flacco to be okay for Week 1. It's still not building confidence in drafting Ravens on our fantasy teams.

    Sunday Update

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise bothered by minor groin injury

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (groin) was held out of the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Friday, Aug. 18, due to a minor groin issue, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A groin injury can linger if not given proper time to heal. Prosise is a dangerous weapon for Seattle's offense and he'll be competing for snaps with guys like Eddie Lacy and Thomas Rawls in the backfield.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah the clear No. 1 RB

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah has looked 'sharp' throughout training camp, 'appears to have retained speed and agility' he had prior to his injury last season and should get almost all the work on early downs for Detroit this season, according to ESPN's Michael Rothstein.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah is the lead back, but the Lions backfield is going to be split three ways. Behind Abdullah we'll see Theo Riddick as the pass-catching back with Zach Zenner chipping in on short yardage and goal line situations.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham dealing with back spasms

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (back, knee) sat out the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Friday, Aug. 18, due to back spasms, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just get Graham to the regular season and he will ball out. Graham is a TE1 for fantasy owners with a current ADP of TE5 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CAR - QB Cam Newton to make debut next week

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be ready to make his preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The third week of the preseason is the dress rehearsal for the regular season. Newton has been out of action so far this preseason as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. The Panthers added multiple weapons around Newton for 2017, and fantasy owners are taking the veteran quarterback off the board near the mid-portion of the 9th round.

TEN - TE Jonnu Smith shows well Saturday

    Source: ESPN.com

Tennessee Titans TE Jonnu Smith caught 5-of-7 targets for 47 yards versus the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's Delanie Walker 2.0 basically. Smith won't have much fantasy value while Walker is ahead of him on the depth chart, but you should have a lot of love for him in dynasty formats.

TEN - RB Derrick Henry hits pay dirt twice

    Source: ESPN.com

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry finished with 36 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 16 carries and added three receptions for 17 yards against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry is the best handcuff in fantasy football. Yes, DeMarco Murray is the starter but Henry has star quality himself. If something happens to Murray (who is missing time with a hamstring injury), Henry can be a RB1 for fantasy owners. Take him if you get Murray in your draft, and take Henry to "jock block" if you don't get Murray in your draft.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon sitting out

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (hamstring) is not participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon is trying to just earn a spot somewhere on the depth chart at this point in his career. He's currently third at the RB position behind rookie Leonard Fournette and veteran Chris Ivory. Yeldon's fantasy stock in dynasty leagues is incredibly low with his play and career outlook.

BAL - RB Danny Woodhead not on field

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Danny Woodhead (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could just be a day of rest for Woodhead. The Ravens don't have a ton of weapons on offense, and Woodhead can be one of the players QB Joe Flacco relies on the most. We could see him catching 60-70 passes for the Ravens this year.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette should be ready for opener

    Source: FirstCoastNews.com - Mike Kaye

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (foot) told reporters Saturday, Aug. 19, he expects to be ready for Week 1 but acknowledged his exact return date is up to the coaches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette is getting drafted as a RB1 by fantasy owners right now. With a current ADP of RB11 (2.09), Fournette will have to 'hit' essentially to pay off. We love his skill set, but things are a bit of a mess with a move to a quarterback competition in Jacksonville. That offense...and that quarterback situation...don't make us feel good about the fantasy outlook for the Jags.

MIN - RB Dalvin Cook has decent Week 2 outing

    Source: ESPN.com
Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook rushed seven times for 40 yards Friday, Aug. 18, in a 20-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cook is looking more and more like the real deal. Fumbling issues and off-field problems caused the Florida State back to slip to the second round of the 2017 NFL draft where the Vikings were quick to scoop him up. Cook should be the lead back for the Vikings this year, but he will be pushed by veteran Latavius Murray. Fantasy owners should consider Cook a RB2 for 2017 and his current ADP is RB16 (3.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Monday Update

BUF - WR Anquan Boldin Retires

    Source: ESPN - Jim Trotter

Anquan Boldin has left the Bills and has told them he's retiring per Jim Trotter of ESPN.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd had Boldin ranked around WR60. He'd been looking rough on the field and it appears he just realized it was time. This puts pressure on Jordan Matthews to be ready and should create an opportunity for guys like Zay Jones. Boldin was no longer a top WR, but he was a weapon Tyrod Taylor would have benefitted from.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed activated

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed has been dropping steadily on draft boards since he was put on the PUP but at least this is a sign that the team expects him to be ready during the first month of the season. Hopefully, he'll play and look like his typical self next week. If so, he presents a potentially huge value in the fifth or later if he just plays 11-13 games and doesn't miss the fantasy playoffs.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian the 'clear frontrunner'

Source: Denver7 Sports - Troy Renck

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian went 8-of-11 for 93 yards and a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, Aug. 19, and appears to be the 'clear frontrunner' in the race to win the starting quarterback job in Denver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is bad news for the Denver offense insomuch as Siemian isn't going to add a lot of value with arm strength or improvisational plays. He's only worth looking at in superflex or 2QB leagues.

PHI - WR Alshon Jeffery playing catch-up

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery did not practice for about a week and a half during training camp in the preseason or participate in team drills, leading wide receivers coach Mike Groh to conclude Jeffery was 'behind' his teammates when it comes to his knowledge of the playbook.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jeffery's ceiling is 2nd-3rd value based on past production, but his connection with Carson Wentz is crucial and this isn't a positive note. Zach Ertz could lead this team in targets out of the gate.

TEN - WR Corey Davis still sidelined

    Source: NFL.com - Max Meyer

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (hamstring) did not play in the preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Saturday, Aug. 20, and head coach Mike Mularkey said it is unlikely that he will play next week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He could still return for the fourth preseason game, which would be very reassuring for this regular season outlook if he does it without incident. The Titans made Davis one of their starting two wide receivers after he missed most of the spring, so chances are they will do that again once he is healthy. He's a high ceiling pick in the mid-rounds.

KC - Patrick Mahomes throws for two TDs

    Source: NFL.com

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes went 10-for-14 for 88 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mahomes was magnificent on a play outside of the pocket and showed abilities outside of play structure that Alex Smith hasn't shown in his career. The outlook of players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in dynasty leagues continues to get brighter.

TEN - WR Eric Decker may play in next game

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Eric Decker (ankle) has a chance to play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a minor injury by most indications, but seeing Decker play next week would go a long way towards easing any concerns about the season opener against Oakland. All three of the Titans wide receivers have potential to be values, but Rishard Matthews is the healthiest (and latest drafted) right now.

KC - RB Charcandrick West surpasses 100-yard mark

    Source: NFL.com

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West rushed for 113 yards on seven carries in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

West is cementing his roster spot, but will likely be the third running back and could share that role with CJ Spiller.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco ruled out for another week

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (back) will not return until Sunday, Aug. 27, at the earliest, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens offense is already having to deal with injury problems at wide receiver and tight end, in addition to less than optimal situations at center and right tackle. Flacco back issue might be enough to fade this whole offense, with the exception of Danny Woodhead, who would benefit the most of an inability to establish a downfield passing game.

BUF - WR Jordan Matthews gets in individual work

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Sal Capaccio

Buffalo Bills WR Jordan Matthews (chest) was spotted in a helmet but was not in pads Sunday, Aug. 20, catching passes with the rest of his position group during individual work, according to WGR Sport Radio 550's Sal Capaccio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews will be limited for a bit as he recovers from a chest injury. The fit with the Bills pass offense isn't great and his fantasy value is dropping by the day.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray could play next Sunday

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray (ankle) is expected to play in the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Aug. 27, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. He had missed both of the team's first two exhibition contests.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray has lost his place atop this backfield, and at this point he has to show his usefulness to have any kind of regular role. He could be a short yardage and goal line specialist, but he's not clearly worth a draft pick in typical leagues right now.

HOU - QB Tom Savage plays well

    Source: The Associated Press

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage completed eight of his nine passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in a 27-23 win over the New England Patriots in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Savage is pedestrian, but better than Brock Osweiler. While Deshaun Watson's stats and highlights were gaudy, the conservative Texans will likely stick with Savage longer than we would want in fantasy. He could still be a lot better for DeAndre Hopkins than Osweiler was, although Savage riffed best with new addition Bruce Ellington in this one.

WAS - Quiet debut for WR Josh Doctson

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) made his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 19, and finished with one catch for 12 yards in a 21-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and John Keim of ESPN.com believes Doctson and QB Kirk Cousins need more time to work together to develop trust.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doctson is more of a bench stash at this point, but a worthy one with his athletic talent, the Washington offense's ability to support three wide receivers, Jordan Reed's injury history, and Terrelle Pryor's lack of experience with Cousins. It will take patience, but don't give up on Doctson early as long as he is healthy.

IND - RB Marlon Mack shows off upside

    Source: ESPN.com

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack had five carries for 45 yards and two catches for 14 yards in a 24-19 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mack left defenders grasping in air at his best moments and appeared to have the juice to deserve a role in the offense right away. He's more of a dynasty stash than redraft prospect right now because of concerns of about the Colts offense at first and the presence of Frank Gore and Robert Turbin.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt played 17 of the first 19 snaps of the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Aug. 19, and had eight carries for 40 yards and three catches for 23 yards.

Hunt responded well to a huge workload early in the game and probably gave the Chiefs confidence that they have two backs that can handle the backfield. This isn't going in a good direction for Spencer Ware, but Hunt might have trouble completely overtaking him. The Chiefs backfield could be very productive, but unpredictable.

Mahomes was magnificent on a play outside of the pocket and showed abilities outside of play structure that Alex Smith hasn't shown in his career. The outlook of players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in dynasty leagues continues to get brighter.

Alex Smith is looking over his shoulder again .
