NFL Player News - Week of 7/17/17

    HOU - D'Onta Foreman arrested

    Source: The Associated Press

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman was arrested Sunday, July 16, and has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A third-round pick out of Texas in 2017, Foreman was expected to compete with Alfred Blue for touches/snaps behind starter Lamar Miller. Chip Lewis, Foreman's attorney in this matter, says that Foreman bought the handgun legally and had it secured in his car properly in accordance to Texas law. Lewis also says that Foreman did not possess (or smoke) the marijuana and that a passenger in the car was the culprit.

ARI - RB David Johnson ready for big workload

    Source: NFL.com - Max Meyer

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson said he believes he can handle 30 touches per game like head coach Bruce Arians hopes to see this season. 'I feel like there's room for me to definitely carry more. I think the biggest thing is me learning and getting better and improving. So I feel like I can definitely get that 30 touches, not all rushing obviously, 30 touches per game,' Johnson said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals are going to use Johnson as the centerpiece of their offense once again this year. Fantasy owners know how valuable Johnson is as a runner and receiver out of the backfield and that's why he's at least a consideration for the no1 overall pick in any format.

PIT - Nothing close between PIT, Le'Veon Bell

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is not close to an agreement on a long-term contract with the Steelers at this point. The Steelers have until Monday, July 17, to sign Bell to a multi-year deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The deadline is closing in for all franchise-tagged players. We have a feeling this could go right up to the wire like others have in the past. The two sides should work feverishly through Monday to get something done. Deals get done at deadlines and this one is in the 11th hour.

MIN - Dalvin Cook to see 300 touches in 2017?

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook broke loose for a run of 50 or more yards 10 times during his Florida State career, and while the Minneapolis Star Tribune's Matt Vensel believes the Vikings might not ask him to take on 300 carries as a rookie, Vensel will also not rule it out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook should be the lead back for the Vikings this year, perhaps as soon as Week 1 of the regular season. His primary competition for the position is free agent addition Latavius Murray and he's missed the offseason program recovering from ankle surgery he had back in March. Cook fell in the draft due to character concerns and fumbling problems at Florida State. If he hangs onto the rock and stays out of trouble, Cook has low end RB1 upside for fantasy owners with his all-purpose skill set. He's going off the board at RB29 (6.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ARI - WR John Brown ready for big season?

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Jordan Schultz

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown will be the main beneficiary of the departure of Minnesota Vikings WR Michael Floyd, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports. Floyd accounted for 88 targets for the Cardinals last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brown is going to be the Cardinals no2 WR opposite Larry Fitzgerald in 2017 and there should be more buzz about him. He had a lingering concussion and complications from sickle cell anemia that limited him during his 15 starts in 2016. He's at full strength now, and Brown should build on his 2015 season of 65 catches, 1,003 yards, and 7 touchdowns. He's WR42 (9.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NO - WR Ted Ginn to be No. 3 WR

Source: The Times-Picayune - Larry Holder
New Orleans Saints WR Ted Ginn Jr. will be the team's No. 3 receiver this season and can also be used as a kick or punt returner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Brandin Cooks traded to the Patriots, the Saints need Ginn to be their no3 WR behind Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. Ginn has more value in leagues that reward points for return yards, but in 12-team PPR leagues he's going off the board at WR65 (14.05).

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins open to deal after season

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is not expected to sign a long-term deal before the 4 p.m. ET deadline Monday, July 17. However, Cousins is reportedly open to doing a deal with the team after this season as there has been 'a positive, constructive tone' to recent contract talks, per a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins has been franchise-tagged each of the last two years. They can actually tag him for a third year (at a cost just above $34 million), but working out a long-term contract might (finally) make more sense.

DEN - Denver getting closer to deal with QB John Elway

Source: Colorado Springs Gazette - Woody Paige
The Denver Broncos and executive vice president/general manager John Elway are continuing to negotiate a long-term agreement that could be privately finalized this week and announced shortly before training camp opens, according to Woody Paige of the Colorado Springs Gazette. The deal could pay Elway $30 million to $35 million over the course of five years, which would make him the NFL's highest-paid executive. In addition, Elway could receive the title of chief operating officer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The salary for Elway has not really been the question. Since coming on board as an executive in 2011, the Broncos have won the AFC West every year but last year. They've made two Super Bowls during that time and won one championship. Elway may want a piece of the Broncos ownership, and that may be the cause of the holdup here. The two sides have been working on a deal since last October, but they might be able to get something done before training camp starts on July 27th.

IND - QB Scott Tolzien still the backup

    Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen

Indianapolis Colts QB Scott Tolzien is ahead of QB Stephen Morris on the depth chart and would likely start in Week 1 if QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) isn't ready, according to Kevin Bowen to Colts.com.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tolzien started the Week 12 game against the Steelers last year, going 22-of-36 for 205 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. All signs point to Luck being ready for Week 1 but that's not a given. Expect Luck to be limited during training camp and the preseason as he comes back from his January shoulder surgery.

These guys need to quit hanging out with trouble. If you are a 3rd Round pick you can't be driving around with a guy who has a gun and drugs on him.

    Tuesday Update

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott involved in bar incident

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Scott Gleeson

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott was involved in an incident at a Dallas bar Sunday, July 16, but no arrests were made and no police reports have been filed involving Elliott.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No police involvement here but this still looks bad for a player who seems to constantly find himself in or around trouble. Elliott is reportedly 'bracing' for a 'short suspension' of between one to two games for his alleged involvement in a 2016 domestic violence incident, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This incident won't look good to the league. Stay tuned.

PIT - No extension for Le'Veon Bell

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pitssburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will play the 2017 season under the franchise tag if/when he signs it.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell seemed like the only franchise-tagged player who could potentially get a new long-term contract. Now, he's set to play on a one-year salary of around $12 million in 2017. Bell is not obligated to show up for training camp since he has not signed the tag. Reports indicate Bell will miss time at the start of camp.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins was offered big money

    Source: SI.com - Albert Breer

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was offered $53 million guaranteed as part of the Redskins' offer in early May, according to team president Bruce Allen.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What a weird story. The NFL is full of twists and turns, and this was Washington making a public statement where they put out the full data on the offer for Cousins. Along with the salary offer, the statement also read "Kirk has made it clear he prefers to play on a year-to-year basis." Even though they could franchise tag Cousins for a third year in 2018 (at the cost of $34 million), it looks like he'll be playing elsewhere (San Francisco?) next season.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins will play under tag again

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was not given a new deal prior to the deadline Monday, July 17. He will play under the franchise tag for a second straight year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins is the first quarterback in NFL history to play under the tag for two years in a row. With a price tag of around $24 million, Cousins will have made around $40 million in two seasons combined. They could tag him again next year, but we think Cousins is playing elsewhere in 2018.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson invited to camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Retired WR Calvin Johnson was invited to training camp by the Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood told WJR Radio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wood has been exchanging text messages with Johnson that he described as "cordial" and "professional" but he did not get into specifics. Johnson opened up about his retirement from the Lions recently, talking about how the constant losing was a factor in his decision to walk away. Johnson has declared before that a return to the NFL would be too much of a toll on his body.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns to have major role?

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns is one of Jacksonville's most consistent receivers, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com, and Oehser believes Hurns will be a 'big factor' in the passing game this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

"Big factor" doesn't necessarily mean "fantasy factor" in 2017...especially with reports of having QB Blake Bortles with a more limited role this year. Hurns was a major disappointment for fantasy owners last year, falling from the no14 spot in 2015 to the no75 spot in 2016. The emergence of Marqise Lee and a more conservative approach on offense with an emphasis on rookie RB Leonard Fournette will continue to limit Hurns production. He's WR67 (14.06) in 12-team PPR leagues at this time.

NFL - WR Anquan Boldin talking with teams

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) said he has talked with several teams about the possibility of signing and is scheduled to meet with an undisclosed team Sunday, July 23.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boldin showed last year that he could still make plays at the pro level. We should see him sign with a new team sometime around the start of training camp.

    CAR - Dave Gettleman fired

    Source: Panthers.com

Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman was fired Monday, July 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a surprising move for this time of year. Gettleman has drafted well and the Panthers are just one year removed from a Super Bowl appearance. Something had to happen behind the scenes for this move to take place in the middle of July. Reports have indicated Panthers owner Jerry Richardson didn't like the way Gettleman handled the negotiations with WR Steve Smith and CB Josh Norman. We'll see how Gettleman's firing impacts the possible holdout for TE Greg Olsen and the potential extension for LB Thomas Davis.

ARI - RB Kerwynn Williams the backup

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals RB Kerwynn Williams has earned the trust of head coach Bruce Arians and should serve as the primary backup to RB David Johnson, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Williams and his big play ability have flashed here and there during his pro career. He's a speedy change-of-pace back behind Johnson and would get plenty of attention from fantasy owners if something were to happen to the Cardinals starter.

    Wednesday Update

OAK - WR Calvin Johnson linked to Raiders

    Source: RaidersWire - Katia Dragotis

Former Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson was a guest of Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing during organized team activities earlier this summer. He also played golf with Downing, head coach Jack Del Rio and QB Derek Carr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's been quite a bit of buzz about Calvin Johnson recently, but he's still retired. It would be an amazing story if the Raiders were able to snare both RB Marshawn Lynch and Johnson coming out of retirement in 2017. According to OverTheCap.com, the Raiders have around $18 million in cap space right now. But for now, this is just talk.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson's return could put Lions in bind

    Source: NationalFootballPost.com - Joel Corry

Former Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson, if he decided to come out of retirement, could force the team to release him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is an interesting story to keep an eye on as Johnson has recently opened up about why he walked away from the Lions and into retirement. If he returned, Johnson's old salary would count against the team's cap. According to Spotrac, Johnson cleared over $11 million in salary cap space when he retired, which would put the Lions over the threshold.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell had big offer

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell was given an offer that would have averaged $12 million per year. He would have earned $30 million over the first two years and $42 million over three years, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Instead of getting his long-term deal and getting a big payday, Bell will instead bet on himself with a one-year, $12.1 million franchise tender. We're only left to speculate why Bell didn't sign this lucrative offer. There may have been some provision about suspensions or guarantees. Bell may not report on day 1 of training camp, and he won't lose any money as he's not yet signed his one-year contract.

CHI - More big plays in RB Jordan Howard's future?

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard recorded seven runs of 25 yards or longer as a rookie in 2016, but four of those possessions ended with field goals. It's part of the reason Howard spent parts of his offseason working on his acceleration.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard had a fantastic rookie season, finishing as the league's second-leading rusher with over 1,300 yards on the ground. He had 561 rushing yards after contact in 2016, which ranked third in the league behind only Jay Ajayi (656) and Ezekiel Elliott (632). Last year, 27.8 percent of Howard's rushes went for first downs. He can clearly move the chains and pick up yards after contact, and now we could see Howard play with more explosion.

ATL - TE Austin Hooper worked out with Matt Ryan

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper recently joined QB Matt Ryan for three days of workouts in southern California in an effort to enhance the on-field chemistry between the two.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hooper was decent as a rookie in 2016, garnering 27 targets for 19/271/3 receiving. With Jacob Tamme gone, Hooper is in line to do more. Anyone looking for a potential breakout player should look no further than Hooper. Ryan had a top-5 fantasy season in 2016, so the looks/targets could be there for Hooper in 2017 as the starting tight end. Hooper is getting drafted at TE22 (14.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CAR - TE Greg Olsen can make history in 2017

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen can become just the fourth tight end ever to gain at least 1,000 yards in four seasons. Not only that, but achieving 1,000 yards this season would mark the fourth straight year in which Olsen has reached that mark.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Olsen is a favorite target of QB Cam Newton, and he should once again be a key piece of what the Panthers do when they go through the air. Projecting Olsen for 75+ catches and over 1,000 yards receiving is more than fair.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford slow to recover from surgery

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer
Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford suffered a high right ankle sprain in Week 3 that never truly went away. According to a league source, he had surgery on the ankle this offseason and has been slow to recover.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Langford is competing for the no2 spot on the depth chart behind starter Jordan Howard. With more on the plate for Howard this year (and the addition of change-of-pace back Tarik Cohen), we should only see Langford touch the rock 50-ish times in 2017.

    Thursday Update

LAC - Insight from our Dr. Jene Bramel on Mike Williams

Source: Footballguys - Dr. Jene Bramel

One of the best things about Footballguys is our Dr. Jene Bramel, MD. Dr. Bramel brings his medical expertise to Fantasy Football for insight into injuries.

I asked him about Mike Williams today and this is what he said: "Epidural steroid injections are fairly common before and during the season to try to treat symptoms of herniated discs. Players may get as many as three injections over weeks to months. It's worrisome to hear Williams has had two injections already this year but reports suggest he may be responding to the second. The Chargers should have a better idea about Williams' status in the next 2-4 weeks. If he needs surgery, his most likely recovery timetable will likely be in the 6-10 week range. It may take additional time to regain core strength and conditioning. It's possible the Chargers shut Williams down for the season if he chooses surgery but it's too soon to project his recovery with certainty."

"Expect Williams to start on PUP. We'll watch for additional details in the early days of training camp and update his timetable accordingly."

DAL - No charges against RB Ezekiel Elliott

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lindsay H. Jones

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will not be charged for his alleged involvement in an altercation at a Dallas bar Sunday, July 16, after the Dallas Police Department announced that they have suspended the investigation because of the lack of a complaint by the victim.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Elliott from a legal standpoint, but the league still might take action against the second-year runner. Due to all of his offseason transgressions, reports indicate Elliott could be suspended for 1-2 games to start the year.

LAC - Surgery off table for Mike Williams for now

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams' (back) back injury is improving, and surgery for Williams is not on the table at this time, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Surgery may or may not be in the future for Williams, but one thing is clear -- the rookie first-rounder is way behind his teammates after missing offseason work. Williams seems to be on the track as other rookie WRs in recent years (Josh Doctson, Breshad Perriman, Kevin White) who didn't contribute much if at all in their first season.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford to receive extension soon?

Source: NFL Network - Stacey Dales

The Detroit Lions are talking with QB Matthew Stafford about a contract extension, and there is internal optimism at the team's headquarters that an agreement could be reached within the next two weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the latest buzz around Stafford...and this was to be expected. Once Derek Carr got his big contract from the Raiders, the design was set for Stafford's deal. Most expect a deal done for Stafford around the start of training camp.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz to report early

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz will report to training camp Monday, July 24, when rookies and selected veterans are scheduled to report.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles are expecting big things from Wentz in year two. With new additions in the passing game (WRs Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith) and a battering ram at running back added (LeGarrette Blount) we could see Wentz turn in a solid season. Projecting him for around 4,000 yards and 20-ish touchdowns in 2017 seems fair. From a fantasy perspective, Wentz is seen a low-end QB2.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is throwing to teammates during workouts in Baltimore, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There were previous reports about Newton working out with rookie first-round pick RB Christian McCaffrey before the start of training camp. Newton has got better weapons around him this year and we could see fewer rushing attempts for him as they replace that with short passes to dangerous weapons like McCaffrey or rookie WR Curtis Samuel.

JAX - TE Gary Barnidge to work out for Jacksonville

    Source: FirstCoastNews.com - Mike Kaye

Free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) is scheduled to visit and work out for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, July 25, according to a league source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After trading away Julius Thomas (Dolphins) earlier this year, the Jaguars don't have much at the position. At this time, Mychal Rivera is probably their top pass-catching option at tight end. Barnidge has gotten interest from a few teams, and we expect the veteran to get signed near the start of camp.

DEN - RB Devontae Booker more prepared in 2017

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker had at least 18 carries in four of the first five games following C.J. Anderson's season-ending knee injury in late October. In those four games, he averaged 2.8, 3.2, 3.3 and 1.9 yards per carry.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't sleep on Devontae Booker. He was still coming back last year from two surgeries to repair his meniscus after his college days at Utah. That and..oh yeah, he's a bad zone runner. In the power/gap system implemented by new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, Booker has looked much more comfortable this offseason. With Anderson's history of getting banged up, Booker needs to at least be on your waiver wire speed dial if not added late as a lottery ticket pick.

GB - Belief remains in WR Randall Cobb

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb still has the team's belief in him after his three-touchdown performance in the wild-card game against the New York Giants. 'I think you saw him in those playoff games,' wide receivers coach Luke Getsy said, 'and he wasn't even totally healthy, and you saw who he is. He's an impactful guy. You take the Giants game early in the year, and it's third-and-long, and we throw the ball way short of the sticks and he's the only guy on the football team that makes that play for us.'

It's been a couple of years since Cobb produced at a high level. Last year, injuries robbed Cobb of his explosiveness and he didn't look like the same player. Now healthy, Cobb is looking to bounce back in 2017. Fantasy owners are selecting him at WR40 (8.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson evolved into slot receiver

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson ran nearly half of his routes from the slot and the perimeter in the final 10 games last season. In 181 routes run from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus, Nelson led the NFL with 2.75 yards per route.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep this in mind when looking at matchup data this season. Nelson is the favorite target of QB Aaron Rodgers and fantasy owners love him too. Most are taking him at the turn (1.12) as the no6 wide receiver off the board in 12-team PPR leagues.

GB - Geronimo Allison to miss first game

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Green Bay Packers WR Geronimo Allison has been suspended for the first game of the 2017 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allison had a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge that was settled earlier this year. He flashed the last two games of his rookie season in 2016 with 4-for-66 against the Vikings in Week 16 and 4-for-91 and a touchdown against the Lions in Week 17. When he returns in Week 2 this year, it will be as the Packers no4 wide receiver behind Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Randall Cobb.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan has not started extension talks

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said he has not started contract extension talks with the Falcons at this point. He said he is not concerned about his next contract but is happy that owner Arthur Blank said Ryan will be compensated for his play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan is a franchise quarterback coming off the best year of his career. He's under contract with the Falcons through the 2018 season, but we could see them extend him early just to lock him up for a longer period of time. At 32-years old, Ryan is at the top of his game.

DEN - Jake Butt likely to go on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) likely will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because he is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No surprise here. Butt may be the best tight end on the Broncos roster, but the rookie is about eight months removed from the knee injury he suffered in Michigan's bowl game. Reports have been positive about his recovery, but there's a chance Butt begins the regular season on the PUP list too. A.J. Derby should be the Broncos starting tight end when the season opens up.

    CHI - Mitchell Trubisky signs

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Chicago Bears first-round QB Mitchell Trubisky signed his four-year rookie deal Wednesday, July 19. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trubisky and the Bears rookies reported to training camp on Wednesday. Now signed, Trubisky is set to compete with free agent addition Mike Glennon. We see Glennon as the starter to open up the regular season, but Trubisky could get some starts later in the year.

GB - WR Davante Adams in a contract year

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2017. His 12 touchdowns tied for fourth in the NFL last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Touchdown production like that is tough to duplicate, so we could see Adams having a statistical dip in 2017. He's earned the trust of Aaron Rodgers, but Adams did drop seven passes last year...and concentration has been a problem for him dating back to his days catching passes from Derek Carr at Fresno State.

MIN - Dalvin Cook to see work on kickoffs?

    Source: Sirius XM NFL Radio

Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook may be a candidate to return kicks if special teams coach Mike Priefer has his way, although Priefer acknowledges the decision ultimately lies with head coach Mike Zimmer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook had fumbling problems in college at Florida State and that was one of the reasons he dropped in the draft. Having him as a return man is risky if he doesn't show improved ball security. Plus, if Cook is the team's starter at running back then perhaps using him as a return man as well isn't advisable.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins wants to stay in Washington

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' first choice is to stay with the Redskins despite both sides not agreeing on a long-term deal. Cousins said he would love to stay in Washington long term and has hope for getting a deal done next offseason.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Can we really believe that? Especially after Bruce Allen kept calling him Kurt when the team publicly revealed the offer they made Cousins before the July 17th deadline for franchise players. Cousins is focused on football now, but next offseason we could see him bolting for a team like the 49ers where he would be reunited with Kyle Shanahan.

    Friday Update

BAL - Joe Flacco impressed with RB Danny Woodhead

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Danny Woodhead has impressed his new teammates thus far -- specifically QB Joe Flacco -- not just with what he can do after making a reception, but also before making the catch. 'Really, ever since we lost Ray Rice, we haven't had a type of back that's quite like how Ray was and quite like how Danny is in the passing game,' Flacco said. 'They just have a very good feel for when they're open and how to get open, how to sit in holes, how to find my eyes, and you can already see that. You can see he has a really good feel for those kinds of things. If you remember back, obviously, Ray was really good at doing that, and that gives a lot to your offense for sure.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Woodhead has carved out a niche in the NFL and should fit into the offense very well. We're not shocked he is impressing his teammates, as Woodhead has always been a hard worker. He appears to be fully head from last September's ACL injury so, that's a bonus. Expect a big start to the season for Woodhead, as Kenneth Dixon is suspended for the first four games of the year and Woodhead will be his replacement. That might tail off once Dixon returns, especially with a 32-year old back like Woodhead. Right now Woodhead has an ADP of 85 overall and is the 34th running back off the board in early drafts.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell looking to be paid like RB, WR

Source: NFL Network - Ike Taylor

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he is looking for a deal that will pay him like a No. 1 running back plus a No. 2 wide receiver, according to NFL Network analyst Ike Taylor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Aim high. Before he gets that money - and it's a big ask, so he might not - he needs to be on the field for 16 games. Health and off-field issues have hurt that cause the last two years but this is his chance to prove he can be relied upon. With no suspension in the offing and his health good, we expect a big year for Bell and if the eventual payday isn't quite as grand as he hopes, it will still put him in the upper echelon of players. The NFL may not put a premium on running backs anymore, but Bell is a special back.

ARI - QB Carson Palmer threw too much last offseason

    Source: NFL Network

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer wore his arm out from throwing too much last offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said they've found a good routine for Palmer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The guy is 400 years old in football years, so making sure he doesn't overdo it is a good idea for a team with - at minimum - playoff aspirations. Without Palmer, the Cardinals have serious problems at quarterback so no Palmer probably equals no playoff success. While we think a healthy Palmer with a healthy receiving corps could make for a solid QB2, his ADP is showing that Fantasy GMs are skittish. Right now it hovers at 135 overall and Palmer is the 20th quarterback off the board making him a potential value at the moment.

GB - Jamaal Williams will be No. 2 back

Source: Wisconsin State Journal - Jason Wilde
Green Bay Packers rookie RB Jamaal Williams will begin training camp as the No. 2 running back behind RB Ty Montgomery, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If Montgomery is injured, Williams could be a big time earner. He's got great vision, moves the pile and runs bigger than his size. He needs to prove himself in pass protection, but we like his upside. For redraft, he's going as the 52nd running back off the board in early drafts and that sounds about right. He has ability, but so does Montgomery. For dynasty purposes, we think he should get moved up some draft boards by GMs looking to snag a low-cost player with high-upside.

    Saturday Update

DAL - No RB Ezekiel Elliott discipline this weekend

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will not learn of any potential discipline from the league Friday, July 21, or over the weekend, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The best hope for the Cowboys is they hear something one way or the other before the start of camp so they can plan for the opening week or two. We don't expect a long suspension, if one at all. Given how mercurial the league is in levying penalties, your guess is as good as ours. If he misses just a game or two, you can survive it though and he remains a strong choice for your first pick if he is available.

DAL - Dallas takes a look at RB Ronnie Hillman

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Vikings) worked out with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, July 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman has never returned to the level of play he showed during a nice 2015 in Denver. Even if Ezekiel Elliott is suspended for a game or two, Hillman will be stuck behind Alfred Morris.

CAR - QB Cam Newton still on the mend

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) may not be 100 percent healthy going into camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Expect them to be cautious with Newton because without him this offense is in real trouble. His ADP of 69 overall, 7th quarterback off the board is more about the shaky talent around him than it is him or his injury, and if healthy (and if the line is improved) we think he could outperform that. Right now, though, caution is a good thing.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota ready to roll

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (leg) has done 'everything' for the last two weeks and will arrive at training camp in a week planning to play at 215 pounds, roughly 10 pounds lighter than his usual weight.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love the sound of this. Given he was on a tear last year before his injury, we have a lot of faith this will be a great season for him. Early drafts have him as the 13th quarterback off the board and we think that makes sense. Expect his ADP to rise as we see him in action in August.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell will play in Week 1

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell hasn't committed to reporting to training camp on time, but he plans to play in every regular season game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Playing in games is the bigger deal, but we're always cautious about a guy who skips a lot of camp. Sometimes, even though they try to keep themselves in shape, they can't stay in game shape. We think Bell ends up in camp for at least part of the time, and he is without a doubt one of the top - if not THE top - running back in fantasy.

BUF - WR Anquan Boldin to visit Monday

    Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) is scheduled to meet with the Buffalo Bills on Monday, July 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An interesting signing if it happens, and it could hurt rookie Zay Jones' stock a bit. While Boldin's better days are behind him, he is a good enough possession receiver that we could see Tyrod Taylor leaning on him quote a bit. He would also be good insurance against yet another Sammy Watkins foot injury.

DAL - Dallas kicking the tires on RB Denard Robinson

Source: NFL Network - Jane Slater

Free-agent RB Denard Robinson (Jaguars) worked out with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, July 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Do the Cowboys know something we don't regarding Ezekiel Elliott's availability? Maybe. Maybe not. If nothing else, it makes for good watercooler talk.

BUF - Zay Jones impressed during spring

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Jake Hamilton

Buffalo Bills second-round WR Zay Jones 'performed well in spring practices' and 'looked the part of a top three wideout,' according to BuffaloBills.com contributing correspondent Jake Hamilton.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As banged up as Sammy Watkins is, short term Zay Jones could have some value at some point this season. Long term, the Bills didn't pick up Watkins' extension which could mean a bigger role for Jones in 2018. Right now he's tracking as the 66th receiver off the board in early drafts. He has value, but clearly the market is cautious, as it should be.

NE - Champs high on QB Jimmy Garoppolo

    Source: CSNNE.com - Mike Giardi

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has head coach Bill Belichick enamored by his ability, according to one scout. 'Bill thinks he's got the next great one,' the scout said. 'I watched his snaps. I think he can be that. (Garoppolo) has a great base, and his mechanics are close enough to (QB Tom Brady) that you appreciate his willingness to learn and the coaching he's gotten there.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, the Patriots sure weren't in a rush to get rid of him, so we believe it. Garoppolo was impressive as far back as the 2014 Senior Bowl, with a strong arm and a sharp football mind. The question was whether he could learn to do all the little things and adjust his game. From what we saw last season before he was injured, the answer is yes. He's not likely to have fantasy value this year barring an injury to Brady, but he should be on your dynasty rosters without a doubt.

NYG - TE Will Tye could be on trading block

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants TE Will Tye could be made available via trade late this summer as long as the rest of the position group stays healthy, according to ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're not expecting teams to line up. Tye has had moments, but unless the Giants are willing to take very little - maybe a pack of gummy worms and part of a six pack of soda - expect him to be cut rather than traded.

MIN - WR Jarius Wright's roster spot in danger?

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings WR Jarius Wright is no lock to make the team, according to ESPN's Ben Goessling, following the offseason signing of WR Michael Floyd and the selection of rookie WRs Rodney Adams and Stacy Coley in the draft. Wright signed a four-year extension before the 2015 campaign and carries a cap number of $3.138 million for the upcoming season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We've liked Wright but he's never really been more than an occasionally productive player in both the NFL and fantasy. As it stands, he's a nice but easily replaceable piece of the offense and even if he makes the team, remains a fantasy non-factor.

GB - WR Jeff Janis could be on the bubble

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis could be in danger of not making the team, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, after the Packers invested draft picks on WRs Malachi Dupre and DeAngelo Yancey as well as the emergence of WR Geronimo Allison. Janis did little as a receiver last season but has been one of their top performers on special teams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Every couple of years there emerges a Packers wide receiver fans and fantasy owners are drawn to like a moth to flame. And like that moth, inevitably it all ends in flame and tears. Janis is a guy who Packers fans raved about for several years but who never fulfilled that promise. We have no real expectation that changes this year IF he makes the team, and that won't happen if a hungrier special teams ace emerges. You can safely stop moving towards the flame now otherwise you will get burned.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's very little room for error in Jacksonville with Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, and Marqise Lee assured roster spots and both Dede Westbrook and Arrelious Benn likely to hang on as well. Greene hasn't done much in his two years with the Jaguars, so this wouldn't come as a surprise.

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets TE Jordan Leggett needs to improve a lot as a blocker in order to become an every-down player in the offense, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leggett has very little ahead of him, though Austin Seferian-Davis remains an intriguing option. If Leggett can get the blocking down though, we think he could be a good producer in a year or two. Like many on the Jets offense this year, though, we would avoid him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abbrederis flashed with the Packers but was really inconsistent. Unless he can find a way to change that - while Golden Tate and Marvin Jones falter - we don't expect much from him this season.

LAR - Cooper Kupp a projected starter

    Source: TheRams.com - Myles Simmons

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp was listed as a preseason starter on the unofficial list provided to the media Wednesday, July 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll see what happens with the official depth chart but frankly, why not? The more time he gets to build chemistry with Jared Goff, the better. Kupp has tremendous skill and a wide array of moves to gain separation from coverage but while we like him, our enthusiasm is dampened by the tendency of rookie receivers to struggle and the expected slow advancement of Goff's game.

SF - Joe Williams pushing for playing time

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has 'put himself into a position to compete for a significant role' heading into training camp, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There has been a steady trickle of takes that seem to put Carlos Hyde's supremacy in the backfield in question, even before the draft. San Francisco's running back position will be one of the most interesting to watch in training camps this year, with Williams as the hand-picked new regime back and Hyde as the incumbent and talented if frequently banged up returning back.

SF - WR Bruce Ellington has something to prove

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington must stay healthy and prove himself to the new coaching staff in order to earn a role in the offense, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ellington has a higher ceiling than presumptive starting slot wideout Jeremy Kerley, but rookie fifth-round pick Trent Taylor is also a promising young slot receiver and could take Ellington's roster spot if he can't stay healthy this summer.

SF - WR Marquise Goodwin in line to start

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin is expected to be the No. 2 receiver this season, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers wide receiver group is a work in progress with only Pierre Garcon entrenched as the #1. Aldrick Robinson will play a role along with Goodwin as a field stretcher, and Jeremy Kerley is the favorite in the slot. There should be a decent amount of production to spread around in an offense that will be playing from behind a lot with a high volume passer at the helm in Brian Hoyer.

ARI - RB Chris Johnson will have a role

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be on the field at the same time as RB David Johnson on occasion, head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, July 21. 'We've had it in the plan every year and one of the two always gets hurt all the damn time,' Arians said. 'But we'll have some two-back stuff with he and David back there'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is set up as a clear handcuff to David Johnson, although he's not the same receiving back that he used to be. Kerwynn Williams was strong in limited duty last year and would play a role if the starter went down.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater may start season on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) likely will start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Ben Goessling.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've been saying this for weeks. Not only do they want to be super cautious with the future of their franchise, there's a monetary aspect to this. They are unlikely to keep Sam Bradford around due to the massive cap hit he represents next year, and if Bridgewater does not play this season they can preserve the fifth year of his contract. That gives them another year at a cheap price and more time to build up the offense of line and the rest of the offense to help Bridgewater out.
