NFL Player News - Week of 5/29/17

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise to be busy in passing game

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise could catch 60 passes in 2017 if he stays healthy, in the opinion of beat writer Sheil Kapadia. Prosise caught 17 of 18 targets for 208 yards (12.24 yards per reception) last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prosise averaged 7.0 yards after the catch per reception, a total that ranked well above the 4.9 average in the NFL last year. He's elusive in open space, and Prosise has a skill set that is much different than that of starter Eddie Lacy. Seattle can use Lacy and Prosise as a nice 1-2 punch in 2017. We see Lacy as a RB2 for fantasy owners and Prosise as a RB4/flex option in PPR leagues.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy looking forward to passing game

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy is excited as a pass-catcher in the Bills' new offense. He explained that the Bills throw it to the running backs a lot in new offensive coordinator Rick Dennison's offense. Additionally, Dennison makes it harder on defenses because the Bills line up in the same formation a lot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last year for the Broncos, running back Devontae Booker was the team's third-leading receiver with 31 catches under Dennison. This year with the Bills, expect McCoy to catch around double that number. He's a top-10 pick in any format, and in PPR leagues McCoy gets that boost because of his skill set and because of his talent as a runner.

ARI - Coach impressed with Chad Williams

    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals WR Chad Williams was impressive during organized team activities this past week, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

From Grambling State, to the Senior Bowl, to Cardinals OTAs it seems like Williams is impressing at every stop. Williams was the centerpiece of the Grambling offense, and he's used to a heavy target load. His body control, concentration on passes above his head (or near the sideline) and athleticism are a sight to be seen. However, the rookie needs work on his route-running ability, and adjusting to low passes is something else that needs attention.

SF - QB Brian Hoyer feels comfortable

    Source: NFL.com - Max Meyer

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is confident heading into his second stint with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2014 when Hoyer quarterbacked the Browns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That comfort level could put him atop the depth chart when the regular season begins. Hoyer said his familiarity with Shanahan's offense makes it easier for him to call plays, adding that it comes naturally to him now. He's competing with Matt Barkley for the team's starting job in 2017. Rookie C.J. Beathard is on board as a developmental prospect.

GB - TE Martellus Bennett connecting with Aaron Rodgers

Source: Wisconsin State Journal - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers TE Martellus Bennett has made it a priority to get to know QB Aaron Rodgers this offseason. Bennett said he's had a lot of conversations with his new quarterback and has really made an effort to simply befriend Rodgers. 'I'm just trying to do my job, make sure I can keep up with [my teammates], Bennett said. 'They've been doing a good job for so long, I'm just trying to get in where I fit in right now.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Packers here, and potentially great news for fantasy owners looking to invest in Bennett. The Packers have a high-powered passing game, and with Rodgers tossing him the rock it wouldn't surprise us to see Bennett finish the year as a top-5 fantasy tight end. His current ADP is TE8 (7.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

WAS - New quarterback likes WR Terrelle Pryor

    Source: Redskins.com - Brian Tinsman

Washington Redskins WR Terrelle Pryor is already impressing QB Kirk Cousins in his first offseason with the Redskins. Specifically, Cousins has been impressed with Pryor's knowledge of the game, work ethic and positive attitude. 'I'm really looking forward to trying to get him as many touches as possible and allow him to impact our team in any way he can.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pryor has worked hard to be a better wide receiver since transitioning from quarterback. The chemistry he and Cousins are building now should pay off in the fall. Pryor is set to be the team's leading receiver and a favorite for Cousins on Sundays. He has the talent (and is in the system) to outperform his current ADP of WR20 (4.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SF - Kyle Shanahan to split offensive duties

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will also serve as offensive coordinator, but he plans on splitting duties between several assistants.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's wise for the first-time head coach as he doesn't want to spread himself too thin. Mike McDaniel will be in charge of the ground game, and Mike LaFleur will oversee the passing attack. Bobby Turner will serve as running backs coach. Shanahan has a great group of coaches around him.

BAL - RB Javorius Allen must be decisive

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens RB Javorius Allen has been told he needs to be more decisive when running the ball and needs to hit the hole harder.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen only made an appearance in eight games last year, and he was a healthy scratch for the Ravens down the stretch. The team went out and added veteran RB Danny Woodhead in free agency, so Allen is not guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster. He may be safe for a bit as Kenneth Dixon is suspended the first four games of the 2017 season.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard wants to improve

    Source: NJ.com - Dan Duggan

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard believes he needs to improve after the catch this year. 'I feel like I could have gotten a lot more [yards after catch] last year,' Shepard said. 'That's something that I looked at on film and I want to get better on.' The second-year receiver believes he's ready for an upgrade in his game. 'You make a big jump from your sophomore year, and then college the same way,' Shepard said. Shepard added that he'll be a lot more comfortable adjusting to the speed of the NFL, running routes and the Giants' system.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shepard is a young receiver with tremendous upside, but he didn't quite play up to expectations last year as a rookie. This offseason, the Giants added WR Brandon Marshall and in the draft they selected pass-catching TE Evan Engram in the first round. Those two additions could hold Shepard's numbers down in 2017. His current ADP is WR51 (11.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rawls is currently second string to Lacy, he'll still see time and will be laying in wait when Lacy baloons again.

    Procise is third down/receiving back.

    Wednesday Update

LAR - RB Todd Gurley likely to see fewer targets

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley is likely to receive fewer targets in the passing game with the addition of RB Lance Dunbar. Gurley had his targets double from 26 in 2015 to 58 in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. Gurley is a better receiver than either Rob Kelley or Alfred Morris were for McVay in Washington, but it will be interesting to see if his targets go down. We think they should feed Gurley as much as they possibly can, but McVay wants to use Dunbar similar to the way he used Chris Thompson in Washington. Gurley has a current ADP of RB10 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BUF - Jonathan Williams has big opportunity

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams is primed to take over the Bills' backup running back job -- a position vacated by New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee. Williams isn't getting ahead of himself, though, approaching this offseason one day at a time. Williams missed a lot of time with a foot injury during his senior year at Arkansas. That injury lingered into his first season with the Bills last year, but Williams said he is fully healthy, leaner and excited to play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We loved Williams in college at Arkansas, and it will be exciting to see what he can do in a reserve role in 2017. Williams is the primary backup behind LeSean McCoy, so he could get on the field when the veteran superstar needs a breather. He runs with power and elusiveness and could carry a full load if called upon.

LAC - TE Hunter Henry set to become 'main' tight end

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry is expected to move into the role of team's main tight end, while veteran TE Antonio Gates will transition into more of a third-down, red zone role, according to ESPN's Eric D Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers have been grooming Henry to be that guy, and it sounds like the transition will happen this year. His catches and yardage could increase from what he posted as a rookie in 2016 (36 catches, 482 yards) but his touchdowns might not take a similar leap. Gates could still be a force in the red zone for the Chargers.

MIN - WR Adam Thielen not content with breakout year

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chad Graff

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen said he is dedicated in proving his breakout performance this past season wasn't a fluke. 'I'm waiting until I'm done playing to reflect,' Thielen said at the club's organized team activities last week. 'I've got too much to work on, too many big goals, to reflect on anything. I'm just going to come out here every day and try to get better and bring the same mindset I've brought since I got to the league.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thielen had a breakout season in 2016 with 69 catches, 967 yards and five touchdowns. He finished the year as a high-end WR3 (WR27) and could work his way up to low-end WR2 status in 12-team leagues. It all depends on the development of Laquon Treadwell. A first-round pick in 2016, Treadwell only snared one pass in nine games last year. If Treadwell starts playing up to his potential, then it will adjust the number of targets Thielen gets thrown his way.

PIT - JuJu Smith-Schuster has worked in slot

    Source: PennLive.com - Jacob Klinger

As expected, Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has been practicing in the slot at organized team activities.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie from USC reminds many in the draftnik community of Anquan Boldin because of his aggression at the catch point and run-after-the-catch ability. He should be the leading candidate to play in the slot with Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant lining up outside.

DEN - TE Gary Barnidge speaks with Denver

    Source: Sirius XM NFL Radio

Free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) recently spoke with the Denver Broncos and did the same earlier with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has already reportedly visited the Buffalo Bills, according to Sirius XM NFL Radio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barnidge would be an upgrade for the Broncos. They have Mike McCoy running the show on offense, and the two have a history together from their days with the Panthers. Barnidge has a bit of interest and should find a home before the start of training camp.

LAR - RB Lance Dunbar to be a factor

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams RB Lance Dunbar is a piece that head coach Sean McVay wants to establish in the passing game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dunbar could play the Chris Thompson role in McVay's offense. Last year for Washington, Thompson caught 49 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns (along with 68 carries for 356 yards). Projecting 30 catches or so is not outlandish for Dunbar this year. At that rate of production, he wouldn't be much of a fantasy factor in 2017.

OAK - QB Derek Carr would play sans extension

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Michael Gehlken

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr said he will play out the 2016 season even if a contract extension is not agreed upon before the start of the season. Carr added that he doesn't want the extension to be a distraction this year. The quarterback's hope is that an extension will be done by training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders should work diligently to get this done. Carr is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, and that new extension is going to be a hefty price tag. He's worth it, and everybody knows it. They don't need to go through any franchise tag scenario with Carr, just sign him to a big money deal and move on. Plenty of teams would love to have the 'problem' of signing Carr.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas misses OTAs

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas (personal) missed organized team activities Tuesday, May 30, due to a personal issue, according to head coach Vance Joseph. Joseph expects Thomas to return to practice this week. WR Cody Latimer practiced with the first-team in Thomas's place.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Thomas has looked great at OTAs this year. Back in the Mike McCoy offense, the Broncos are expecting a lot out of Thomas as their featured receiver. He showed good chemistry with Trevor Siemian last year, but his chemistry with Paxton Lynch seems improved from recent OTAs.

CAR - Curtis Samuel back at practice

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers second-round pick WR Curtis Samuel (personal) returned to practice Tuesday, May 30, after missing OTAs last week for personal reasons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Samuel is a super athletic playmaker who is just learning the nuances of the WR position. The Panthers should work in a package of plays just to get the ball in his hands. As he grows into his position, Samuel could make plays like Tyreek Hill does for the Chiefs.

CHI - Chicago takes back Connor Shaw waiver

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Chicago Bears QB Connor Shaw will remain with the Bears for now after Chicago rescinded its waiving Shaw Tuesday, May 30. Shaw will participate in organized team activities but could be waived once QB Mark Sanchez (knee) is fully healed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Welp, that's a bit awkward....but Shaw should know the deal. We'd expect him to be waived - and actually hit the waiver wire - when Sanchez is back for training camp.

NYG - Wayne Gallman signs rookie deal

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants RB Wayne Gallman signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, May 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gallman will bring some power to the Giants backfield behind Paul Perkins. The rookie from Clemson is swift and can run through arm tackles at the second level. We should see the fourth-round pick as a red-zone option too with his bullish and aggressive running style between the tackles.

    Thursday Update

NE - RB James White pegged for prime role

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

New England Patriots RB James White has firmly entrenched himself as the passing-down back for the club.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White caught 60 passes for the Patriots last year, and that number could push towards 75 this year with an entrenched role. The backfield duties are going to be split between Mike Gillislee as the lead back with White coming in on passing downs and in certain packages. Dion Lewis will work into the mix somehow as well, but for now White seems to be the "1b" to Gillislee's "1a" in 2017. White has a current ADP of RB49 (11.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah remains the starter

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah remains the team's starting running back, according to head coach Jim Caldwell.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That fits with the offseason clues the Lions have left for us. Abdullah is entering this year as the lead back, and the team didn't draft a replacement for him in the 2017 NFL draft. They also didn't tear up free agency looking for help at the position, although they did add Matt Asiata last week. Abdullah is a smaller back, so his workload will be managed with Zach Zenner getting some short-yardage work and Theo Riddick being featured on passing downs. Right now, Abdullah is getting drafted at RB26 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CLE - RB Isaiah Crowell may see more work

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell could receive more carries in 2017 because head coach Hue Jackson said the Browns have to run the ball more this upcoming season than they did in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crowell nearly had 1,000 yards rushing last year but it came on less than 200 carries. With more work in 2017 (and an incredibly upgraded offensive line), Crowell could be a RB1 for fantasy owners. Last year he finished as RB14 in standard scoring leagues.

MIA - TE Julius Thomas poised for big year

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is 'going to be a thing this year' if he stays healthy, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, who reports the team has drawn up multiple plays just for him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Staying healthy is the big 'if' with Thomas. Always has been and always will be. He's never played a full 16-game season during his pro career. Thomas is back in the Adam Gase offense, one he was incredibly productive in when he was with the Broncos. His current ADP is low, and he could outperform where he's going off the board at TE17 (13.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CHI - RB Jordan Howard not resting on his laurels

    Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Adam L. Jahns

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard is 'noticeably slimmer' entering his second season after finishing second in the league in rushing as a rookie. Howard intends to play at 225 pounds in 2017 and hopes not to come off the field as much.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard doesn't want to be known as a one-year wonder. Instead, he's working to stay on the field and stay effective with the rock in his hands. Howard has a current ADP of RB7 (2.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell may miss minicamp

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell could skip the rest of organized team activities and the team's minicamp because he still has not signed his franchise tender, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to watch this situation closely. Bell had surgery to repair a core muscle back in March, so there's no need to rush him back. We'll see if the Steelers give Bell the long-term contract he wants before the July 15th deadline. Bell and the team has had some discussions about a long-term deal, but neither side seems worried about the situation at this point.

CLE - DeShone Kizer seeing snaps with starters

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB DeShone Kizer has received some snaps with the first-team offense during organized team activities because the coaching staff needs to see more of him on the field than the other quarterbacks, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's only natural as Kizer could be the team's franchise quarterback. Cody Kessler may begin the season as the starter, but it's Kizer who could finish the season atop the depth chart. Kizer is big, has a strong arm and is athletic but he needs to speed up his decision maker as a passer and stop locking onto targets. We'll see if he can make enough strides to be a starting option for the Browns at some point during his rookie year.

MIN - WR Laquon Treadwell never healthy in 2016

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell has pronounced himself fully healed and 'looks healthy' according to CB Xavier Rhodes, one season after Treadwell battled foot, hamstring and finger injuries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's great news for Treadwell and the Vikings. A first-round pick out of Ole Miss, Treadwell's rookie season was a disappointment as injuries slowed him down and held him to one catch for 15 yards in nine games. He's got a skill set reminiscent of DeAndre Hopkins (Texans) if at full strength. Treadwell is not going to outrun anyone down the field, but he has great concentration and can make difficult catches seem routine. He'll compete for the WR3 spot behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen in 2017.

MIN - Dalvin Cook signs contract

    Source: Vikings.com - Craig Peters

Minnesota Vikings second-round draft choice RB Dalvin Cook signed his four-year contract Wednesday, May 31. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook has first-round talent, so long as he stays healthy and hangs onto the rock. He's got the vision and instincts to gash defenses as a runner. Cook needs work in pass protection to be more of a three-down back, and this season he'll compete in a RBBC with Latavius Murray and Jerrick McKinnon. The rookie from Florida State has the talent to emerge as the lead back. Fantasy owners are drafting him at RB36 (7.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

HOU - D'Onta Foreman back on the field

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (hamstring) is participating in organized team activities Wednesday, May 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Foreman is a big back with a swift running style. He's not as powerful as perhaps his size indicates, and the rookie from Texas will be competing with Alfred Blue to be the primary backup behind Lamar Miller in 2017.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman sidelined

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (undisclosed) is expected to be out a 'little while' after reportedly playing out to make a catch in practice last week and landing on the ball. Head coach Hue Jackson intends on having Coleman back by training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A broken hand last year as a rookie held Coleman back, and this year he's being hampered again by injury. Coleman could be the main WR for the Browns with the departure of Terrelle Pryor (Washington) in free agency. They did make a move to add Kenny Britt in free agency, so perhaps he's the top target if Coleman is banged up or falls behind.

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick (wrist) was running and working out on the sidelines during practice Wednesday, May 31, and had the ball in his left hand because his right hand is heavily wrapped.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions will not rush Riddick back as he's a known commodity with a clear-cut role. Riddick will continue to be featured as the team's pass-catching running back. Fantasy owners in PPR leagues should look at him as a RB3/flex option.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At 6'4" 218 pounds, Golladay is an impressive size/speed prospect to track in dynasty leagues. He can fly down the field and is known to make acrobatic catches near the sideline. Golladay can take the top off the defense or be a quality option in the red zone.

LAR - QB Jared Goff not a lock to start Week 1?

    Source: TheRams.com

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff has 'done a nice job of getting better,' according to head coach Sean McVay. However, McVay added, 'But you always want to make sure you're playing the guy that you feel like gives you the best ability to win football games. Right now, Jared is the starter.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's not go overboard here. Goff was the no1 overall pick last year, although it was not McVay's regime that selected him. He'll compete with Sean Mannion in training camp, but we think Goff gets the nod. Whether or not he holds onto the job during the year is another story.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones has not been at voluntary workouts as he's likely to be traded or released. Reports indicate Jones has been told he's not in the team's plans for the future. There's a chance some team would take a chance on Jones for a conditional draft pick. Either traded or released, Jones is unlikely to be with Washington when training camp rolls around.

On my dynasty league I have all 3....Gillislee, White and Lewis. I'm sure I will play the wrong guy at least 75% of the time.

This is one time an injury would actually help me.

The Rams just can`t seem to get it right .

    Friday Update

LAR - Fewer catches for RB Todd Gurley?

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez
Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley may not be counted on as much in the passing game this year with the addition of RB Lance Dunbar, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Alden Gonzalez. The Rams want Gurley's focus to be on the running game. He was the focus of opposing defenses last year while only averaging 3.2 yards per carry.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This report has been out there for a week or so. It's another ding against Gurley's fantasy stock. They don't have much to their passing attack, so defenses should stack the line to stuff the run. His current ADP of RB10 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues is fairly accurate for his projected production in 2017.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah had Lisfranc tear

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (foot) tore his Lisfranc ligament in Week 2 last season. It was well documented that Abdullah injured his foot, but the Lisfranc injury, specifically, had not been disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions didn't address running back (Matt Asiata signing last week is no fix), so they had to feel good about Abdullah's prospects coming back from a Lis Franc anyway. Abdullah will split time with Zach Zenner and Theo Riddick, which will limit his upside. Owners are taking him as RB26 in 12-team PPR leagues, usually in the mid-sixth round.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater throwing

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) threw a few uncontested passes in positional drills Wednesday, May 31.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Vikings could retain Bridgewater without using his fifth year option if he starts the season on the PUP list. Sam Bradford is expensive in 2017 - $17 million expensive - and the Vikings might want to be extra careful with Bridgewater until then. The current uncertainty does make it a bit tough to place value on the receivers though.

MIA - Less double coverage for WR Jarvis Landry?

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry estimated he'd been 'doubled on' about half the pass plays the team has run over the past two seasons, but believes the addition of TE Julius Thomas will prevent opponents from double-teaming him as often.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Landry is dangerous because of his run-after-the-catch ability. Snaring 100 passes this year is not out of the question, but Landry has never been much of a TD hogj (career high 5 TD receptions as a rookie in 2014). With Thomas in town (noted TD machine), Landry's trips to pay dirt may be limited again.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery bulking up

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery is now weighing in at 220 pounds, which is by design to better suit him as a full-time starting running back. He was lifting more over the offseason to gain more muscle.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's going to have to if he is expected to carry the full load during the season. The Packers did draft two running backs, so he may not really be getting all the touches, but he'll get first crack. Even if Montgomery is the main back, we're not expecting to hit 1000 yards in this offensive scheme, which eschewed the run a lot last year and probably will again this year.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant to work on chemistry

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant said he knows that it will take time for him to rebuild chemistry with QB Ben Roethlisberger and become more comfortable with the plays.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's only a matter of time before Bryant is back on the same page as his quarterback. Bryant has WR2 upside and his big play ability means he could swing your fantasy matchup any week. He's going off the board at WR27 (5.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

IND - RB Christine Michael signs with Colts

    Source: Colts.com

Free-agent RB Christine Michael (Packers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, June 1. RB Brandon Radcliff was waived in a corresponding move.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Michael has always had potential, but he's never played up to that and he's bounced around the league. The Colts have a thin group of RBs behind Frank Gore. Michael will compete with guys like Robert Turbin, Josh Ferguson and rookie Marlon Mack. Even in this thin RB corps, Michael is no lock to make the 53-man roster.

HOU - WR Braxton Miller seeks help from assistant

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has reached out to former veteran NFL wide receiver and Houston Texans offensive assistant coach Wes Welker. Miller is trying to glean what he can from Welker in order to be a better slot receiver. Miller said Welker corrects what he does wrong and then Miller tries to fix it on the next play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Miller is still learning, as he only played wide receiver but we like his potential. We just don't expect him to reach it this year. That said, this is a great sign and a fantastic idea. Miller isn't seeing much interest in redraft leagues, and is not worth more than a late pick to fill out your roster. A converted college quarterback, Miller is still learning the nuances of the WR position.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman out until camp?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (undisclosed) may be out until training camp as he recovers from an undisclosed injury suffered during organized team activities. The extent of the injury doesn't seem serious, but the Browns don't want to take any chances with their sophomore receiver, especially since he missed six games last year with a broken hand.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman fell on a football, apparently, which seems like a very Cleveland Browns way to hurt yourself. It's not a great way to start things off given how many games he lost last year (6 for those counting), the direct result of which was less than awesome production. He has ability, now he needs to be on the field to show it.

WAS - RB Matt Jones the No. 5 RB

Source: NFL Network - Michael Silver

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones was told he was the team's No. 5 running back, and he is not participating in organized team activities.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robert Kelley and Chris Thompson lead the team's RBBC with Kelley as the power back and Thompson as the pass-catching back. They will be joined by rookie Samaje Perine. The rookie from Oklahoma is an interesting prospect, as he can pound between the tackles as well as run routes and catch the ball. We love Perine's upside and Michael Turner-like ability. As you can see, the Washington backfield is already crowded (we didn't even bring up Keith Marshall). Expect Jones to be traded or released before the start of training camp.

NFL - TE Gary Barnidge awaiting starting chance

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) hasn't signed with a team because he's holding out to land a starting spot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barnidge showed he can play and play very well, so we're not shocked. Someone will probably get hurt in the next few months, and we'll see some movement then. However, it is impossible to know his fantasy value until he lands on a team as there are too many variables otherwise.

IND - TE Jack Doyle taking on leadership role

Source: George Bremer - The Herald Bulletin
Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle said he is trying to 'improve' in the area of being a leader in order to help the team, as he's by far the longest-tenured tight end on the roster. 'He's a reliable, reliable guy,' head coach Chuck Pagano said. 'The quarterback has a ton of faith and trust in that guy. He's always where he's supposed to be, and that makes a huge difference.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doyle took over last year and did well enough for the Colts that they traded away Dwayne Allen this offseason. He will have to contend with former basketball star Erik Swoope, but we expect quarterback Andrew Luck to use Doyle more, especially in the red zone, where the Colts like to target their tight ends.

MIN - WR Stefon Diggs was limited all year by injury

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel
Minnesota Vikings WR Stefon Diggs stated he was 'never the same' after sustaining a groin injury in Week 4 last season. 'Stuff like that is on me, staying healthy,' he admitted Wednesday, May 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not knowing for sure what is happening with the quarterback situation - the Vikings have Sam Bradford still, but Teddy Bridgewater is on the mend - makes it a bit hard to predict what Diggs' production will be. He could very well sniff 1,000 yards this year but we expect his touchdown production to remain low which will cap his value.

CHI - Cameron Meredith suffers thumb injury

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a ligament problem according to reports, so watch Meredith's progress when he returns to practice in training camp. He's going off the board at WR41 (9.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray might be ready for camp

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray's (ankle) goal is to be recovered well enough from his ankle surgery that he is able to participate in training camp. Murray said he's going to trust the process, not rush the process, and that he is on track to return for camp at some point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Murray could be the team's lead back this year, but he's got to stay healthy and win the job. Rookie Dalvin Cook is likely his best competition for the job. Jerrick McKinnon mixes in here somehow/someway too. Murray should get healthy and try to win the job in training camp.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott case could be over soon

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's domestic violence case could be resolved soon as phone records and other documents were recently turned over to investigators, according to sources. Closure to the case could come before the regular season commences, but the NFL has simply stated that its investigation is ongoing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's curious to note this continuing investigation as Elliott was not charged. All signs point to the second-year star RB getting through this without a suspension.

Baltimore Ravens WR Michael Campanaro (toe) suffered a sprained toe at organized team activities this week and did not practice Thursday, June 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

GB - Jamaal Williams signs rookie contract

Green Bay Packers RB Jamaal Williams signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, June 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ty Montgomery is slated to be the starter, but the Packers didn't draft a pair of backs to hang on the sidelines. Williams is a tough inside runner, and has a no-nonsense style like Rob Kelley (Washington) or Jordan Howard (Bears). More likely, Williams will run over you. He could see short yardage work early on with the potential for more depending on Montgomery.

    Saturday Update

KC - WR Jeremy Maclin released

    Source: Nick Shook - NFL.com

The Kansas City Chiefs have released WR Jeremy Maclin. "I'd like to thank Jeremy for his effort and dedication the past two seasons," Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said. "I have great respect for all players, which makes decisions like these very difficult, but we felt it was in the best interest of our club moving forward to part ways at this time. We wish Jeremy the best as he continues his career."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow...we weren't expecting this. Maclin was set to count $12.4 million against the cap in 2017. This move saves the Chiefs $10 million, and they'll have to carry $2.4 million in dead money according to OverTheCap.com. Maclin may have lost a step, and injuries held him to just 536 receiving yards in 2016. The emergence of Tyreek Hill allows the team to make this move, but they're still thin at the position. We could see Chris Conley step into Maclin's vacated position as a starter opposite Hill.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta has dislocated hip

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating an ongoing story, Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) has been diagnosed with a dislocated hip and is expected to undergo surgery at some point, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The surgery will knock him out for the 2017 season. The continued hip problems will likely end his pro career. The Ravens move forward with Ben Watson, Crockett Gillmore and Maxx Williams as the main TEs on the roster. That's a nice collection, and we'll see which one emerges during the rest of OTAs, minicamp and training camp.

SEA - Seattle not signing QB Colin Kaepernick now

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the team will not be signing free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) at this time but did not rule out the possibility in the future.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks are the only team that has shown interest in Kaepernick so far this offseason. They left the door open to add him later, and that might be just what happens. Trevone Boykin is not a reliable backup option, but he's the guy for now behind Russell Wilson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

TEN - Corey Davis doing more work

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (ankle) has done more in practices of late and could be turned loose for more soon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans made Davis the first WR off the board (no5 overall) in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Davis is a savvy route runner who knows how to create separation in his routes. The Western Michigan prospect drew comparisons to Michael Thomas (Saints) or Eric Decker (Jets) before the draft. In the Titans run-heavy system, Davis has WR3 upside (and a WR4 price tag) for fantasy owners.

TB - RB Charles Sims to be more involved?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Charles Sims showed good burst in practice Thursday, June 1, according to beat writer Jenna Laine, and Laine believes Sims could be used from the slot this season and will be more involved in the passing game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sims is a good receiver out of the backfield, and he's certainly got the ability to line up in the slot in certain packages. He'll compete for touches as a runner and could be more involved while Doug Martin is suspended over the first three games of the 2017 season.

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Ryan Mink

Baltimore Ravens RB Danny Woodhead was a frequent target of QB Joe Flacco during practice Thursday, June 1, and Woodhead was used in a variety of ways throughout the session.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Message! Woodhead is a reliable target who creates mismatches every time he's on the field. The potential to be a RB2 in PPR leagues is always there with him based on Woodhead's skill set and his role with his new team. He's got a current ADP of RB32 (7.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman made multiple long catches in 11-on-11 drills in practice Thursday, June 1.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Ravens and Perriman's dynasty owners here. Perriman, a first-round pick in 2016, missed all of his rookie season due to a knee injury. He's a speed receiver who can get on top of the defense in a hurry. It sounds like Perriman is making big plays and a big impression so far. Consider him a late-round flier in your draft if you have the roster space.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry is a must-handcuff for Demarco Murray's fantasy owners out there. If Murray goes down, Henry easily has RB1 potential in the Titans run-heavy system. His current ADP is RB29 (7.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

There are also a few other teams interested according to CJ2K. Johnson also notes becoming the 30th player to reach 10,000 career rushing yards - a mark from which he is 463 yards shy of - is a motivating factor. We'll see when injuries strike in training camp if Johnson gets a call.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mixon has the ability to be the lead back for the Bengals at some point during his rookie season. He's a three-down back who is as dangerous as a runner as he is a receiver. Mixon will compete with veteran Jeremy Hill to be the top back. If he's the starter, Mixon has RB1 upside in all formats.

TEN - Taywan Taylor making plays

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Taywan Taylor is always making plays in organized team activities, according to beat writer Jim Wyatt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The third-round pick out of Western Kentucky is an exciting player to watch from the slot. He can break ankles in his routes and get open cleanly. He didn't run the full route tree in college, but that's part of his game that should come around. There are plenty of ways (screen passes, jet sweeps) to get Taylor the ball in order to feature his natural athleticism.

TB - Chris Godwin showing versatility

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin has been one of the most consistent players during OTAs, according to head coach Dirk Koetter, and Koetter said Godwin has the ability to play outside or from the slot.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's a consistent report coming from Bucs OTAs. Godwin, rookie WR from Penn State, has good size and build up speed. His best assets are the ability to win contested catches and the concentration to track deep passes clearly. He's impressing right now, but the path to significant targets is cluttered for Godwin in Tampa. Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard should be larger pieces of their passing game in 2017....oh yeah, Adam Humprhies will be competing for the ball too.

    Sunday Update

DET - Detroit could consider WR Jeremy Maclin

    Source: MLive.com - Nate Atkins

Free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) could be an intriguing option for the Detroit Lions if the price is reasonable, in the opinion of MLive.com's Nate Atkins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's not much (if any) proven talent behind Golden Tate and Marvin Jones at the WR position in Detroit. Rookie Kenny Golladay (third-round pick out of Northern Illinois) has some skill but like all young players he may take some time to get used to the pro game. Maclin may not be as fast as he used to be, but he'd bring a veteran savvy to the reserve WR corps and compete as the no3 wideout for the Lions.

SEA - Money an issue between QB Colin Kaepernick, SEA

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The language of the NFL is money, and Kaepernick should not expect much on the open market. In fact, Seattle has been the only team to show interest in him. Perhaps if/when injuries hit in training camp his phone will start ringing...with better offers than Seattle had for him.

BAL - Baltimore could be WR Jeremy Maclin suitor

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) could be a target for the Baltimore Ravens, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley, who believes Baltimore would be the 'perfect landing spot' for the 29-year-old receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens don't have much for experience or proven talent at the WR position other than Mike Wallace. They've got 2015 first-round pick Breshad Perriman, but he is unlikely to be as reliable as a veteran like Maclin. We should see Maclin land with a new team some time before training camp.

OAK - TE Jared Cook a matchup problem

    Source: Raiders.com - Kyle Martin

Oakland Raiders TE Jared Cook will be a matchup problem over the middle and help create space for the rest of the offensive playmakers, according to quarterbacks coach Todd Downing. 'He's a matchup nightmare for linebackers and most safeties,' Downing said. 'He really brings a sense in the passing game of a mismatch that we can count on week in and week out.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook has always been a mismatch nightmare for defenders. He's big, physical and athletic enough to threaten the middle seam. Cook has talent but he's never quite played up to his potential, no matter where he's been playing. Last year with the Packers he showed flashes but was far from consistent. This year with the Raiders, Cook is once again in a robust passing offense but could still underperform. His history is cooked into his current ADP of TE23 (14.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the player who gets the biggest bump with the release of Maclin. Conley is not yet a crisp route runner, but he can catch contested passes regularly and he's got the concentration to work the sidelines. He should get the starting nod opposite Hill in 2017.

New York Giants QB Geno Smith (knee) has been held out of team drills during organized team activities because he is coming back from a knee injury. He is not wearing a brace on his injured knee and has shown plenty of velocity while throwing the ball.

Smith gets a fresh start with the Giants this year as he's competing with guys like Josh Johnson and rookie Davis Webb for the backup spot behind Eli Manning. Reports speculate that Smith will be full go for training camp.

NYG - TE Matt LaCosse does well Friday

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants TE Matt LaCosse was one of the standout performers during practice Friday, June 1, and made several terrific catches. 'Yeah, he made some nice plays,' head coach Ben McAdoo said. 'He is a big target down there in the green zone. Matchup-wise he gives you that length that you are looking for, he can run and he is a functional blocker. So he has a nice skill set.'

Undrafted out of Illinois in 2015, LaCosse is an intriguing deep dynasty prospect we've had our eyes on. LaCosse is big (6'6" 250 pounds) and has the athletic ability to create mismatch problems. Will Tye and rookie first-round pick Evan Engram are above him on the depth chart, but LaCosse could work his way into some two-TE sets.

HOU - WR Will Fuller striving for consistency

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson
Houston Texans WR Will Fuller said he focused on 'catching the ball consistently' this offseason. 'Wherever the ball is coming from, you catch it with your hands and catch it with your eyes,' Fuller said.

Fuller is a speed guy, and he can get by a defender in the blink of an eye. However, concentration problems have plagued him from back in his college days at Notre Dame to now as a pro entering his second year. He had four drops as rookie last year, a mark that tied for 2nd on the team (C.J. Fiedorowicz, 5). His 4.4 percent drop rate (drops per target) ranked 25th in the NFL in 2016 for starting wide receivers.
