NFL Player News - Week of 5/1/17

    BUF - Doug Whaley fired

Source: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle - Sal Maiorana

The Buffalo Bills have fired general manager Doug Whaley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You could see this move coming a mile away. Whaley wasn't very visible in the Bills draft process. The team probably wanted to avoid leaks of their draft plans, but it is clear that this is Sean McDermott's show. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport pegs Brandon Beane and Don Gregory from the Panthers organization as potential candidates to rejoin McDermott in Buffalo, and former exec Joe Banner brought up Brett Veach, who worked with McDermott in Philadelphia and is now in the Kansas City organization that has been a fertile ground for opportunities elsewhere.

GB - RB Ty Montgomery still the starting RB

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery is still the starting running back, head coach Mike McCarthy said Saturday, April 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fourth-round pick Jamaal Williams and fifth-rounder Aaron Jones are both more natural than Montgomery between the tackles and they should have a chance to make Christine Michael expendable. While Montgomery dodged Joe Mixon joining the team, which was a strong rumor before the draft, he'll remain in a committee.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin's weight causing concern

    Source: The Associated Press

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is overweight, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and it's a concern. Benjamin, listed at 6-5, 245 pounds, was rumored to weigh 280 pounds, but Rivera disputed the report. He did not offer a specific weight, but he said Benjamin is a 'little heavy' right now and is working hard to lose the weight.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin's weight was a reported problem at Florida State, and he was also in and out of the doghouse last year. Devin Funchess's development has stalled out and the team didn't bring in very much help in free agency (Charles Johnson and Russell Shepard) after letting Ted Ginn go to New Orleans and Corey Brown to Buffalo. Second-round pick Curtis Samuel is one to watch with 2016 UDFA Keyarris Garrett also a talented and productive name to remember if Benjamin flames out.

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor will need to compete for job

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will not be handed the starting quarterback job and will need to earn it during offseason workouts and training camp, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cardale Jones and rookie Nathan Peterman join journeyman TJ Yates as the competition. This is a good line for the team to take, but if Taylor struggles to separate from this group at all it will be a sign that the new regime made a bad decision to keep him at a slight discount instead of letting him walk when his option was up this spring. Taylor should be considered a matchup QBBC play as long as he wins the job.

HOU - D'Onta Foreman could be No. 2 RB

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman could beat out RB Alfred Blue for the No. 2 running back job this upcoming season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Sarah Barshop.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He should be the #2 with his vastly superior athleticism. Foreman wasn't as powerful as his mass indicates, and he's not a three-down back. He could have some relevance if Lamar Miller goes down this year, but he might be overrated in dynasty leagues because of his production and measureables.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah has hold of starting job

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah will be the team’s starting running back this fall, according to general manager Bob Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Theo Riddick will certainly play a big role in the passing game and Zach Zenner was strong enough at the end of the season to merit consideration as an inside runner, so Abdullah's upside is capped. Still, he was dynamic to open the season and the Lions line is arguably improved after the offseason. He's a mid-round consideration in PPR leagues.

LA - WR Tavon Austin could move outside

Source: The Orange County Register - Rich Hammond

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin could move to the outside or be utilized more in the run game if WR Cooper Kupp is a better option as a slot receiver, according to beat writer Rich Hammond.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Austin's deep speed isn't being used nearly enough, and he hasn't been the open field threat the Rams envisioned when they drafted him in the top 10 or signed him to a big extension. He's barely draftable in PPR leagues. Kupp could be a high volume target with so little at wide receiver for this team, but he still landed in a bad fantasy spot as long as Jared Goff is a work in progress.

CIN - Quick transition for Joshua Malone?

    Source: Bengals.com - Dan Hoard

Cincinnati Bengals WR Joshua Malone is 'well-coached' and knows how to play the receiver position, according to wide receivers coach James Urban. 'I think he's a guy that will flash plays on a daily basis because of his physical tool set, and then he'll just get better, and better, and better,' Urban said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Malone is a size/speed threat who can stick on the Bengals roster as a fifth receiver while he develops. He has starter upside and should be monitored in dynasty leagues just in case first-round pick John Ross can't stay healthy in the pros. Deep dynasty leaguers should look to stash Malone away.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews cleared to work out

Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) has been cleared to work out, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said Saturday, April 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many covering the Eagles expect Mathews to be released once he is healthy, so this is a sign that he could be on the way out. Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood will play roles in the backfield regardless of Mathews' status, but if he is let go, then there will some carries free for the taking in Philadelphia.

GB - QB Brett Hundley was close to being moved

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers QB Brett Hundley was close to being traded during the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft but likely will be remain with the team for at least one more season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is part of a growing trend of teams trying to profit from developing backup quarterback by trading them for a high price before they hit free agency and likely get overpaid elsewhere by a quarterback hungry team. Hundley has a great athleticism but was a long-term project when the Packers drafted him. At least they have shown enough faith in him to allow him to be the backup early in his career. We'd love to know the team and price that was being discussed.

BAL - Two Ravens WRs could see more playing time

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WRs Chris Moore and Michael Campanaro will be given the opportunity to compete for more playing time in 2017, according to general manager Ozzie Newsome.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore is a 2016 fourth-round pick and he has some downfield game to suit Joe Flacco's style as a quarterback. Campanaro is a quicker than fast slot receiver who has had trouble staying healthy. The Ravens need help at wide receiver, so they will have a chance to get on the field this year.

BAL - WR Anquan Boldin may be option for Ravens

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) has received interest from the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens are really only two deep at wide receiver with often injured Breshad Perriman being one and Mike Wallace the other. The rest of the depth chart inexperienced, so a return to Baltimore would make sense. He might be relevant in fantasy leagues if he signs with the Ravens and one of their top two receivers go down, and he could also play a lot in the slot even if they stay healthy.

BUF - Nathan Peterman ready for the NFL?

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills QB Nathan Peterman's accuracy and timing of his throws and his 'ability to work under center' stood out, according to head coach Sean McDermott. 'It's not something you see often in the college game,' McDermott said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterman can be similar to Cody Kessler, mostly safe with the ball, but not threatening to a defense in most ways as a passer. He is alternative to Cardale Jones for the new regime if Tyrod Taylor isn't kept next year.

Who will be the Bills QB if Tyrod Talyor can't go. Possibly Cardale Jones? That guy should have gone to the NFL after he won the Championship.

    Tuesday Update

NYG - RB Paul Perkins will start for Giants

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins will be the starting running back, head coach Ben McAdoo announced Monday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note here, but it doesn't mean Perkins will be without competition for touches. Perkins has speed and quickness to make moves in the open field and be dangerous with the ball in his hands. However, he's not a big back and the Giants could be monitoring his touches even if he's the starter.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater's option will be declined

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater's fifth-year option will not be picked up, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not surprised by this decision. Bridgewater is expected to begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and will be reevaluated in October. His horrific leg injury suffered last year may prevent him from ever playing up to his potential as a pro. The Vikings QB situation past 2017 is up in the air as Sam Bradford (like Bridgewater now) is in the final year of his contract.

WAS - Samaje Perine will challenge Rob Kelley

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins rookie RB Samaje Perine is expected to challenge fellow RB Rob Kelley for early-down work, according to ESPN.com's John Keim. Head coach Jay Gruden lauded Perine for his toughness and physical abilities. 'We know how strong he is,' Gruden said. 'Just a total package is really what we liked.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perine reminds us of former Falcons RB Michael Turner because of his compact build and lower body power. Both are bangers who make their living between the tackles. The addition of Perine is bad for Kelley...even if he wins the early down job. Washington could end up using a rotation of both. Stay tuned.

DEN - RB Jamaal Charles will visit Broncos

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) is scheduled to visit the Denver Broncos Tuesday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is close to "E" when it comes to gas left in the tank on his pro career. He hasn't been healthy in two years and may have lost the speed that made him such a dangerous pro. If added by the Broncos, Charles would be a part-time player as a change-of-pace back behind starter C.J. Anderson.

PIT - QB Zach Mettenberger released

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Zach Mettenberger was released Monday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mettenberger has a big arm but little control on where his passes end up. The Steelers added Josh Dobbs (Tennessee) in the 2017 NFL draft to work as a developmental quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger. We can't see Mettenberger doing much with any team that would be interested in picking him up.

GB - RB Christine Michael shown the door

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Michael Cohen

Green Bay Packers RB Christine Michael was released Monday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael has bounced around the league despite having quite a bit of natural talent. The Packers have revamped their backfield with three RBs chosen in the 2017 NFL draft. Fourth-round pick Jamaal Williams is the most likely to challenge converted WR Ty Montgomery for the lead RB job for Green Bay.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles' option picked up

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was a bit of a question mark for the Jaguars before the 2017 NFL draft. They didn't get involved with the QB run that took place in the top 10 of the draft, so it looks like Bortles will be the man -- at least for this year. Bortles had a great 2015, but he fell back to Earth in 2016 and struggled to grow as a passer. If he can get back on track, the Jaguars would likely be inclined to get him a long-term deal.

NO - Alvin Kamara tabbed for third-down role

Source: The New Orleans Advocate - Nick Underhill

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara will be used to create mismatches in the passing game, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. 'To fill that role with a player of his caliber, we're pretty excited about it,' Loomis said 'Obviously, we were. That's why we traded up to get him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kamara is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, and the Saints would be wise to use him in that role as much as possible. He's also a swift runner outside the tackles, plus Kamara is known as a touchdown hog.

SF - Coach high on C.J. Beathard

    Source: SI.com - Peter King

San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard was the only quarterback head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Shanahan said Beathard reminds him of Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's quite a few things to like about Beathard. His deep passes may be some of the prettiest and most accurate of any quarterback in this draft class. Beathard is going to get some time to develop, but we're watching him closely in deep dynasty leagues.

CHI - Tarik Cohen could add extra dimension

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Mark Potash

Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen could serve as a change-of-pace back for the offense, according to beat writer Mark Potash.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tarik is called "The Freak" for a reason. He can be seen on YouTube catching passes while doing backflips, and he can be seen on the field making big plays as a runner, receiver or return man.

DET - WR Anquan Boldin still welcomed in Detroit

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said Saturday, April 29, that the 'door's open' for free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) to return to the Detroit Lions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no rush for Boldin to sign at this point. We could see the veteran skip offseason work and sign right before the start of training camp.

    Wednesday Update

DEN - RB Jamaal Charles joining Broncos

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) will sign with the Denver Broncos after agreeing to terms Tuesday, May 2, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles stays in the AFC West here. If healthy, Charles has the speed and elusiveness to score anytime he touches the ball. But that's a big "if". We'll be watching closely to see how he works with C.J. Anderson. The Broncos need to monitor Charles' touches in order to keep him fresh and healthy. In a part-time role (but in a Mike McCoy offense), Charles could have at least RB4/flex fantasy value.

BUF - No option for WR Sammy Watkins

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins will not have his fifth-year option picked up, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow. The Bills must be concerned about Watkins suffering another injury as this option is guaranteed only for injury. If he stays healthy and plays up to his massive potential, Watkins is one of the best young WRs in the game today. If Watkins produces at a high level in 2017 then the Bills will have to consider rewarding him with a massive payday.

NO - RB Adrian Peterson remains confident

    Source: NewOrleansSaints.com

New Orleans Saints RB Adrian Peterson (knee) believes he has 'a lot of years left' in the NFL. Peterson is 32 years old and is entering his 11th season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't doubt Peterson's confidence, but at some point even he will begin showing more and more signs of wear. The Saints should be using a three-headed RBBC this year with Mark Ingram as the lead back, Peterson as the battering ram and rookie Alvin Kamara as the receiving back. That split could help keep Peterson fresh, but we're not so sure about the 'a lot of years left' thing.

NO - Saints using 'three-headed monster' at RB?

Source: The Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

The New Orleans Saints' plan for the upcoming season is 'likely to recreate their 2009 and 2011 potent backfield attack' when they implemented a 'three-headed monster' at running back. This came to fruition when they drafted RB Alvin Kamara, who is a 'prototypical third-down back' to complement RBs Mark Ingram and Adrian Peterson. Kamara could be in line to play a 'Reggie Bush/Darren Sproles-type role.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Saints have so much talent at the running back position, it's falling out of Sean Payton's pockets. Ingram should be the lead back with Peterson playing a battering ram role. Kamara could easily be a full-time starter in the NFL, but he's such a great receiver (especially compared to the other two) the Saints should get him on the field in that way as much as possible. It's good news for the Saints, but a three-headed RBBC is difficult to navigate for fantasy owners.

NYJ - New York will have QB competition

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will compete for the starting quarterback position this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't hold your breath here looking for fantasy value. McCown should have the leg up in this competition as he's the most experienced, but with the Jets you just never know how things are going to shake out. No matter who wins the job, fantasy owners will be looking elsewhere for help.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee terms

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee's two-year, $6.4 million deal includes $4 million in 2017 via a $1.5 million guaranteed salary, a $2 million roster bonus and $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses. He's scheduled to make $2.4 million in 2018 with a $1.9 million salary and $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a good price for Gillislee, and it's cheaper than what LeGarrette Blount likely wanted on the open market. Gillislee is going to fill Blount's role in 2017, and that has plenty of fantasy value. Getting 1,000 yards rushing with 7-9 touchdowns is not out of the question, and that gives him RB2 upside with a RB4 price tag in your fantasy drafts.

CLE - Cleveland not pressuring DeShone Kizer

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Cleveland Browns rookie QB DeShone Kizer will be given time to adjust to the NFL and will not feel pressure to take over the starting job right away, according to executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown. 'He's a young man and he's going to have a long time that he's with us and in this league,' Brown said. 'If things go the way I'm sure he's planning on [them going] and the way we hope it goes, we don't have to rush it.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the smart move. Kizer has a big arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet, but he needs significant work when it comes to making quick/precise decisions. The rookie has the upside to be a quality starter and does remind some in the scouting community of Daunte Culpepper....a raw version of Culpepper. The Browns should have Cody Kessler as their top QB with Brock Osweiler competing for a backup spot (for now). Kizer needs some time to get up to speed and develop.

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) is participating in offseason activities.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In arguably the best tight end class in NFL history, the Steelers passed on selecting one in the 2017 NFL draft. That's good news for Green...if he can stay healthy. His first season with the Steelers was mostly a wash due to injury. It's a good sign that he's out there during offseason activities, but make sure to monitor Green's progress as training camp and the season draws near.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin's option exercised

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth-year option was picked up Tuesday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin had a fantastic rookie season, but he missed all of 2015 due to a knee injury and then registered a disappointing season in 2016. The option is only guaranteed for injury, so it doesn't automatically lock Benjamin onto the roster in 2018. Benjamin should be looking for a bounce-back season in 2017.

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron had his fifth-year option exercised Tuesday, May 2.

Ebron has improved each year he's been in the pros, and finished 2016 with a career high 61 catches for 711 receiving yards. If Ebron scored more touchdowns (only one score last year), he would be a better fantasy asset.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant absent from workouts

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant was not on the field for the team's 'Phase 2' of their offseason workouts Monday, May 1. He still has 'steps to take' before being able to rejoin his teammates for practices, including securing a local counselor. Bryant is 'hopeful for minicamp or sooner.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant should get this done in the near future. Once he secures a counselor, Bryant should be able to get back to practicing with his teammates. The Steelers OTAs begin on May 23rd, and that would be a realistic target date for the talented but oft-troubled wide receiver.

CAR - Curtis Samuel to be used primarily in slot

    Source: Panthers.com - Max Henson
Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel said that the team is going to use him 'primarily as a slot receiver,' and that he'll also sometimes be in the backfield.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Samuel was one of the most dangerous players in college football with the ball in his hands. He's super fast, lightning quick and capable of stacking moves on top of moves to create space. Samuel is not a natural hands catcher, and he'll body catch too many throws. We'll see if he can work on that and then thrive in his role with the Panthers.

    Thursday Update

NFL - RB Justin Forsett retires

    Source: Twitter

Free-agent RB Justin Forsett (Broncos) announced his retirement Wednesday, May 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well done, Sir. A seventh-round pick of the Seahawks (2008), Forsett did a good job of sticking around in the NFL. His best season was in 2014 with the Baltimore Ravens when he had over 1,200 yards rushing and was the 8th-best fantasy running back that year. Nothing to see here people. Henry was back in school, and the team has no issue with his absence.

NFL - TE Gary Barnidge has more visits set up

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) has two more visits planned for next week after visiting Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, May 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

'Big Play' Barnidge is getting quite a bit of interest since being cut by the Browns...and for good reason. He had a down season in 2016, but that has more to do with the inept nature of the Browns offense. The Bills would be a good fit for him, but he may want to explore all options before committing to a new team in 2017.

NYJ - WR Eric Decker expects to be ready for camp

    Source: Newsday - Bob Glauber

New York Jets WR Eric Decker (hip, shoulder) has been a full participant in the team's offseason conditioning program and will be ready to practice at the start of training camp in July.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets are going to take it easy on Decker before training camp starts. They have a bad QB situation...again...so having Decker near full strength is going to help out whatever poor passer they have lining up under center. Decker's fantasy value is that of a WR3/flex player in 2017, and his current ADP goes along with that notion (WR36, 8.01).

NYJ - QB Josh McCown expects competition

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Josh McCown said he expects to compete with QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty for the starting quarterback job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown has much more experience than the other two quarterbacks, but the veteran knows he must prove himself on the practice field if he wants the starting job. We're expecting the Jets to make more than one quarterback change regardless of who begins the season as the starter. They need to see what they have in Hackenberg, who failed to see the field last year as a rookie even though they selected him with a second-round pick.

SD - Two Chargers RBs could be third down back

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers RBs Branden Oliver and Kenjon Barner appear to be the leading candidates for the third down back role this upcoming season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Either one could work as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. Fantasy owners are looking at Gordon as RB6 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues right now. Oliver and/or Barner are going to replace Danny Woodhead (Ravens) this year, and there's a bit of fantasy value there...especially in PPR leagues. We'll watch this battle unfold in training camp.

SD - RB Andre Williams could be main RB backup

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers RB Andre Williams is expected to be given the opportunity to earn the role as the main backup to RB Melvin Gordon on first and second downs in 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams is big but not as physical as his size (6'0" 230 pounds) would indicate. He was on the Chargers practice squad for most of last year, but he did get to see the field in Week 17. In that game, Williams had 87 rushing yards on 18 carries. In deep fantasy leagues where you can handcuff your top RBs, Williams is the name to target if you're invested in Melvin Gordon.

DET - RB LeGarrette Blount has Lions' interest

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson

Free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount (Patriots) has interest from the Detroit Lions, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That move would make a lot of sense for a team that doesn't have a true banger at the position. Right now, the Lions say that Ameer Abdullah is their starter but he's small, injury prone and likely best used in a change-of-pace capacity. The Giants also may have interest in Blount.

Carolina Panthers assistant general manager Brandon Beane is scheduled to interview for the Buffalo Bills general manager position Thursday, May 4, according to a source.

DAL - Ryan Switzer expected to be returner

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Ryan Switzer is expected to be a punt returner for the Cowboys and could also be used as a kick returner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Switzer is dangerous with the ball in his hands. He has quick feet, great foot frequency and can change directions on a dime. The rookie from North Carolina can be limited as a receiver by his small catch radius, but as a returner he can make impact plays for the Cowboys in 2017.

DEN - Jake Butt ready for opener?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

The Denver Broncos believe TE Jake Butt (knee) could be ready for the start of the regular season. Butt will receive playing time as a rookie as long as he is healthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Butt injured his knee in Michigan's bowl game earlier this year. He says that he'll be ready sometime in August, but that's some time from now. If healthy, Butt can be a Jason Witten/Hunter Henry-like prospect for a Broncos offense that desperately needs production from the tight end position. Only the Jets were worse last year when it came to getting production there.

MIA - RB Damien Williams not signing tender

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins restricted free-agent RB Damien Williams is refusing to sign his $1.8 million tender and has not participated in the team's offseason conditioning program.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This move makes zero sense for Williams. The team placed an original round tender on him, and the deadline for another team to make him an offer has already passed. Nobody showed much if any interest in Williams, so he can either play for the Dolphins or retire. The Dolphins don't have to do anything here.

    Source: PewterReport.com - Trevor Sikkema

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

NFL - QB Jay Cutler moving to broadcasting?

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) has auditioned for a broadcasting career, which could signal his retirement is imminent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd draft Tony Romo over Jay Cutler in a fantasy broadcaster league, but the train wreck factor of Cutler's "I have no cares to give" personality could be worth the price of admission. We're a bit surprised there's no interest in Cutler. Then again, the teams who need a quarterback are looking for younger talent with more upside and less grouchiness.

LAC - Anthony Lynn believes in QB Philip Rivers

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers has started 176 consecutive games, and head coach Anthony Lynn believes he has another three or four productive years ahead of him. The Chargers did not a draft a quarterback because Lynn still has high expectations for his veteran quarterback. 'We definitely think Philip can still play,' Lynn said. 'Whoever we drafted was going to have to come in and sit for a while because I think Philip is going to continue to play at a high level.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers has been up and down over the latter half of his career and last season was one of the worst he's had in some time, with the highest interception total (21), and third lowest completion percentage (60.4) of his career. It's good the Chargers believe in him, but how many times can he reboot his career? We'll see if an upgraded O-Line and added weapons helps Rivers play better.

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's extension talks remain in the early stages, according to Lions general manager Bob Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Given how hard to come by quarterbacks are, getting ahead of the game to lock Stafford down is smart for the Lions. Stafford is coming off a solid year after throwing for 4,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions, and it seems as if he has settled into life after Calvin Johnson just fine.

NFL - TE Gary Barnidge may talk with JAX, CAR

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) may meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barnidge could be an interesting fit for either team, though he might make more hay from a fantasy standpoint in Jacksonville as he would have less competition for touches at tight end. In Carolina he would be firmly behind Greg Olsen.

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr will begin contract extension talks with the Raiders in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Carr was a second-round pick, so there was no fifth-year option available to pick up. Entering the final year of his contract, Carr has proven that he's one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. This is the biggest no-brainer in the history of Earth...the Raiders will find a way to get Carr an extension that makes him one of the highest paid players at his position.

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (back) had a cyst removed from his spine following the final game of last season. Brown had been dealing with a sickle cell trait last season and his production suffered because of it. After the cyst was removed, though, he was back to normal. Brown said his body has been feeling better and he's back in his normal routine and back to being himself.

SF - RB Mike Davis released

San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis was released Thursday, May 4, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis had a bit of hype surrounding him coming out of South Carolina in 2015. A fourth-round pick that year, Davis leaves San Francisco with only 108 yards rushing in two years combined. He may struggle to find work, and if/when he does it's not like we'll expect him to play up to the potential he showed with the Gamecocks years ago.

BAL - RB Terrance West has stars aligned

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West is in a favorable position after the team didn't draft a running back in the 2017 NFL draft or free agency.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Despite sharing the load with several other backs, West ran for 774 yards and while guys like Kenneth Dixon are still around, West is likely in control of his destiny. We still aren't completely sold on him as a fantasy starter, as we still think he shares carries, but he's a solid backup or flex player at this point. Out of the Ravens backfield (Danny Woodhead, Kenneth Dixon, Terrance West) it's West with the lowest current ADP in 12-team PPR leagues of RB63 (13.11). That could change as we get closer to the year and with Dixon's four-game suspension looming.

Updating a previous report, retired QB Jay Cutler said his decision to retire and become a broadcaster will be permanent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

MIN - Minnesota noncommittal about starting RB

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer did not shed any light on the identity of his team's starting running back - expected to be a two-man battle between Latavius Murray and rookie second-rounder Dalvin Cook - when asked about it Friday, May 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook is the more dynamic back, and he could win the job eventually even if Murray begins the season as the starter. The rookie from Florida State will need to show that he's adept at protecting the quarterback if he wants to see the field. Cook also needs to do a better job of hanging onto the rock as fumbling was a problem for him with the Seminoles.

LAR - WR Tavon Austin to become more of a deep threat?

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to establish himself as more of a downfield threat, similar to what DeSean Jackson for new head coach Sean McVay when he was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While the report indicates he could be like Jackson, we think Austin could be (and is similarly built to) Jamison Crowder. It will be interesting to see how the offense is crafted under McVay, and this team needs a ton of work in the passing game. Right now, fantasy owners aren't over the moon about Austin. He has a current ADP of WR79 (14.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

WAS - WR Jamison Crowder set for increased role

    Source: CSNMidAtlantic.com - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder should exceed 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career in 2017, according to CSN Mid-Atlantic's JP Finlay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With DeSean Jackson (Buccaneers) and Pierre Garcon (49ers) moving on in free agency, Crowder is the player with the most established chemistry with QB Kirk Cousins in the WR corps. That chemistry could get him even more work in 2017 even though he'll be splitting targets with WRs Terrelle Pryor and Josh Doctson (plus TE Jordan Reed). Crowder has a current ADP of WR33 (7.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) posted a video of himself going through agility drills Thursday, March 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bridgewater is one his way back from the horrific knee injury suffered last year, but there's no guarantee that he even gets on the field in 2017. A free agent in 2018, Bridgewater's future in the NFL is very much up in the air.

Oakland Raiders RB Marshawn Lynch has joined the offseason training program and has taken part in individual position drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're so excited to have Lynch back in the league after he was out of football in 2016. Running behind one of the league's best offensive lines, Lynch has a ton of fantasy relevance. Fantasy owners are drafting him at RB30 (7.03) in 12-team PPR leagues...and that ADP should rise to at least RB2 levels by the time August rolls around. Be careful though as we expect the hype to be off the charts for Lynch.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota close to 'full-head running'

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (leg) said that he feels great and is 'probably another week or two from really full-head running.' In the meantime, he's begun to do some jogging and is continuing to take things one day at a time in doing his best to be prepared for the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More great news for the young quarterback here. Mariota should do nothing during the offseason work, but it seems like he's on track to fully participate at some point in training camp. The Titans added three quality skill position players to the offense with premium picks in the 2017 NFL draft (WR Corey Davis, WR Taywan Taylor, TE Jonnu Smith) so Mariota could post career-best numbers if fully healthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're glad Zimmer is optimistic, but it's hard to be there with him at this point. There's a chance that Bridgewater never takes another snap in a game for the Vikings. His availability for this year is a huge question mark, and Bridgewater is set to be a free agent in 2018.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins' extension not a priority

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins is not expected to receive an extension offer during the season, according to the Buffalo News's Vic Carucci, who believes new head coach Sean McDermott's big-picture vision for the roster doesn't include a huge investment in a receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a new sheriff in Buffalo, and it's all about what you do going forward. The Bills surprised many by not picking up the fifth-year option for Watkins before the May 2nd deadline. Watkins needs to prove that he can stay healthy this year...especially if he wants to maximize his value on the free agent market in 2018. If healthy, Watkins has the upside to be a truly dominant player at the position. However, that's a position McDermott isn't putting a lot of stock in for right now.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kizer is far from a finished product, and it's a good sign that he's eager to learn because he's got a lot to work on. He's big, athletic and has a good arm. However, Kizer tends to lock onto his initial targets and does not get rid of the ball as quickly as he needs to in the pros. He'll compete to be the Browns starter this year along with Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watson may be in the best situation of any rookie quarterback in 2017. The Texans have a championship-level defense, and they've got plenty of weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Watson makes big plays when the pressure is the highest, so competing for a job in training camp won't be too much for him to handle. We expect him to start plenty of games this year, and we believe he can win the starting job for Week 1.

McCaffrey is going to be a great weapon for the Panthers offense. He's not a big back, but he can run between the tackles with great patience. McCaffrey is fantastic as a receiver -- either out of the backfield or even split out wide. The Panthers should do what they can to get him the ball in a multitude of ways. Fantasy owners in dynasty rookie drafts should be considering him for the no.1 overall pick.

CLE - Cleveland not expected to add another QB

    Source: NFL Trade Rumors

Cleveland Browns executive vice president Sashi Brown told WKNR 850 AM he does not anticipate the team signing another quarterback. The Browns added second-rounder DeShone Kizer in the draft and already have Cody Kessler, Brock Osweiler and Kevin Hogan on the roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They don't need to add another quarterback! They already have one or two too many. The battle in Cleveland may not draw much fantasy interest as nobody is really excited about drafting guys like Cody Kessler or Brock Osweiler. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In his breakout season last year, Ajayi only had 27 catches for 151 yards. That could change this year, and more receptions should be music to fantasy owners' ears. Ajayi is already a top 10 fantasy RB (RB9, 2.04) but with better receiving statistics he could push for top 5 in 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reunited with Adam Gase, we could see Thomas scoring TDs in bunches like he did for the Denver Broncos. The key with Thomas (as it always is) has to do with health. He still hasn't played a full season since being selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Parker has certainly flashed a ton of potential, but he's not consistent and has struggled with nagging injuries. The Browns moved some WRs around this offseason, adding Kenny Britt in free agency and letting Terrelle Pryor (Washington) move on. Coleman has the speed to take the top off the defense, but Lord only knows who is going to be throwing him the ball. That would make the most sense at this time. Kessler is expected to compete with QBs Brock Osweiler and DeShone Kizer for the job. We'd be shocked if Osweiler makes the 53-man roster, and Kizer is seen as a potential franchise QB....with a lot of work to go. Kessler is efficient as a passer, but he's not a player fantasy owners are going to be clamoring for.

MIA - WR Jakeem Grant may have bigger role

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant has been working as an outside receiver this offseason, and offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said he wants Grant to have a bigger role in the offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grant is small (5'7" 172 pounds) but he's lightning quick and capable of getting by defenders for big plays. He's an exciting player to watch, but Grant will only be a gadget player and thus have limited fantasy value.

NYG - WR Brandon Marshall to play a few more years

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Brandon Marshall said he plans to play two more seasons before he retires.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A fourth-round pick of the Broncos in 2006, Marshall has been one of the most consistent WRs in the NFL...even though he's bounced around to more than a few teams. He signed a two-year deal with the Giants, but nothing is set in stone. If his body feels good in a couple of years, Marshall could easily change his mind.

NYJ - NYJ's new OC 'loves' tight ends

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets offensive coordinator John Morton reportedly told rookie TE Jordan Leggett he 'loves' tight ends and wants to make them a 'go-to guy' in his offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets were the worst in the league in 2016 when it came to utilizing the tight end. Their TE group finished last in targets, receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns at the position. Morton has a lot of 'loving' to do in order to get the Jets back to middle of the pack in this category.

DET - WR Anquan Boldin appears unlikely to return

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Although free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) does not plan to retire, he has not had discussions with the Detroit Lions for more than a month. In the opinion of MLive.com's Kyle Meinke, the odds of him returning to Detroit for the 2017 season are growing increasingly slim, especially after the Lions drafted WR Kenny Golladay in the third round of the draft. In addition, Boldin's No. 80 jersey has been reassigned to TE Michael Roberts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boldin proved last year that he could still produce at the pro level. He's not done, but Boldin is likely in no rush to sign with a new team. We should get closer to training camp and hear more buzz about a potential landing spot for Boldin, but it sounds like a return to Detroit is not in the cards.

TB - O.J. Howard dominates at camp

    Source: PewterReport.com - Scott Reynolds

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard played on the line of scrimmage and in the slot at rookie minicamp Friday, May 5, and he was uncoverable in 11-on-11 drills, according to beat writer Scott Reynolds.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That sounds like what Howard did at the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year. He's big, fast and physical but his lack of production at Alabama (only 2 games with more than 85 yards receiving...both against Clemson) is something that stands out given his natural talent. We know QB Jameis Winston loves to throw to the TE, and Howard gives them yet another weapon in the passing game...and he could stand out as a red-zone threat. Howard will split time at tight end with Cameron Brate.

SF - Joe Williams confident, motivated

Source: Santa Rosa Press Democrat - Grant Cohn

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams said he feels like he was the best running back available in the 2017 NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After 'retiring' from football for a month in 2016, Williams returned to the Utes lineup and dominated. Williams finished the year as a top-20 RB in the nation with 1,420 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns in nine contests. A plus athlete, Williams can create on his own in various ways. The Kyle Shanahan system is incredibly RB friendly, so Williams is a name all fantasy owners need to monitor. He'll compete with Carlos Hyde (who is in a contract year) for the top spot with the 49ers.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill better prepared

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) looks fully recovered from his knee injury, according to head coach Adam Gase, and Gase said Tannehill has a 'better grasp of the offense' this season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tannehill is working with a very QB friendly coach in Gase. His numbers last year (in 13 games) weren't great, and he finished the year as the no.26 fantasy quarterback in standard scoring leagues. With a full season and a better grasp of the offense, it wouldn't be a shock to see him finish in the top 15 again and maybe even top 10 like he was (no.9) in 2014.

CLE - QB Cody Kessler top option for now

Cutler could be decent broadcaster if he remains douchey and speaks his mind.
