NFL Player News - Divisional Playoffs Week

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

GB - Concern for WR Jordy Nelson

    Source: ESPNWisconsin.com - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson's (ribs) injury is a concern, according to head coach Mike McCarthy, but McCarthy said no update on his condition is currently available.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Injuries are treated a bit differently with players champing at the bit to be out there in the playoffs so we'll see how this progresses this week.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown could receive extension

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping to work out a long-term deal this offseason with WR Antonio Brown, who is under contract through 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown may be the best wide receiver in Steelers history. Think about that given the names that have caught passes with Hall of Fame results for Pittsburgh. Getting Brown an extension is a no brainer.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker has solid game

    Source: NFL.com

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker caught four passes for 55 yards in the Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in 2015, Parker built off what he flashed during his rookie season. He finished 2016 with 56 catches, 744 receiving yards and four touchdowns. As head coach Adam Gase continues to build that team, Parker should see his role continue to increase. We'll see if he can take another step forward in 2017.

ATL - TE Jacob Tamme to be UFA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Atlanta Falcons TE Jacob Tamme will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turning 32 years old in March, Tamme is clearly not the player he used to be. However, he can still be an effective player when healthy and given a certain role. His work ethic and ability to be a QB's best friend should land him a job somewhere in 2017. When Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan lands a head coaching job, watch to see if Tamme would follow him.

ARI - RB Chris Johnson to be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is 31 years old and has only played in 15 games over the last two years. This season was cut short by sports hernia surgery. The speedy veteran did flash when given the ball with the Cardinals, and any team in need of a part-time playmaker should have interest.

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham to be UFA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gresham was used a lot more for the Cardinals than he was in 2015. He caught 37 passes for 391 yards but only scored two touchdowns. Gresham isn't a good blocker, but he's a big-bodied receiver who can help move the chains. No matter where he goes in 2017, we can't imagine Gresham being a fantasy factor.

BUF - Buffalo to talk with Kris Richard Sunday

    Source: FOXSports.com - Peter Schrager

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard will interview for the Buffalo Bills head coaching position Sunday, Jan. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richard played for Pete Carroll in college at USC, he then went to the NFL to play for a few years and then went back to USC to coach under Carroll. When Carroll left for Seattle, Richard followed him and now is getting interest as a head coach. A two-year defensive coordinator with Seattle (after working as a DB coach), Richard's interest makes sense with the production of the Seahawks defense.

HOU - No setbacks for RB Lamar Miller

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) said his ankle felt good during the Wild Card playing game and did not have any setbacks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Go news for the Texans here. Miller should once again be the focal point of the Houston offense as they travel to play the Patriots in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

CIN - WR Brandon LaFell to have thumb surgery

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr. and Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell (thumb) will undergo surgery this offseason to repair a ligament in his thumb, but it should not affect his availability for next season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
LaFell is set to be a free agent in March. This surgery shouldn't keep interested teams away from the veteran, but we can't imagine the market being white hot for his services. Instead, a return to the Bengals may be likely. LaFell had 64 catches for 862 yards and six touchdowns in his first year with the Bengals in 2016.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger in walking boot

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (ankle) said he expects to play in the Divisional Round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs next week even though he suffered an ankle injury in the Wild Card playoff game. Roethlisberger was in a walking boot after the game against the Miami Dolphins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It wouldn't be a playoff game without Roethlisberger playing through some sort of injury...ankle, shoulder, broken nose....whatever it is he's going to keep fighting. He'll be limited during the week of practice.

DEN - Denver to interview Vance Joseph

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

The Denver Broncos are scheduled to interview Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for their head coaching vacancy this week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Joseph may be the frontrunner for the Broncos job. He's known as a charismatic leader in the mold of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Joseph played his college ball in Colorado at CU and he's close with Broncos college scouting director Matt Russell. The Broncos have already interviewed Dave Toub (Chiefs special teams coach) and Kyle Shanahan (Falcons offensive coordinator) for the job, but will wait to make a decision until Joseph interviews.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith unlikely to return

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is unlikely to be back with the club in 2017, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprises here. The Jets have a mess at quarterback, and don't be surprised if they go back to the well in the 2017 NFL draft to find a passer. Smith is recovering from ACL surgery performed last November, and the team is expected to try and resolve the quarterback position during the spring, long before Smith is fully recovered.

True his career could be near over. He will have to work super hard and then show teams he won't be a problem in the locker room.

    Tuesday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson must practice, could play

    Source: ESPN.com - Jason Wilde

Updating a previous item, Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) needs to practice by Saturday, Jan. 14, or else he will not play this weekend, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Things seem pretty bleak for Nelson right now. Keep an eye on his status later in the week. If Nelson can't play, the team would turn to undrafted rookie Geronimo Allison to do more.

JAX - Doug Marrone officially named head coach

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars interim head coach Doug Marrone was officially named the Jaguars' permanent head coach Monday, Jan. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marrone failed as the head coach of the Bills in 2013 and 2014, but he did a good job in two games as interim coach of the Jaguars in 2016. His main project will be to revive the career of QB Blake Bortles. The Jaguars seemed to play better (against weak defenses) over the last two games with Marrone at the helm.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson has two fractured ribs

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) suffered two fractured ribs against the New York Giants Sunday, Jan. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Nelson and the Packers here. It will take 'an incredible effort' for him to play against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger out of boot

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ron Cook

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (foot) said he is no longer wearing a walking boot and that he is fine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well that was quick. Roethlisberger said an MRI showed that he aggravated an old foot fracture but it is not serious. He's good to go for the Divisional Round game against the Chiefs.

OAK - QB Matt McGloin wants chance to start

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Gutierrez

Oakland Raiders impending free-agent QB Matt McGloin said he will look to sign with a team that will allow him to compete for the starting quarterback job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't be surprised to see the Houston Texans show interest. When Bill O'Brien was the head coach of Penn State, McGloin was his quarterback and looked good. In a quarterback-desperate league, there's a chance for McGloin to compete somewhere.

DEN - RB C.J. Anderson should be ready for camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson (knee) has started running on a treadmill and believes he will be ready for the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson could be ready for the start of OTAs later this year, but the Broncos may want to keep him limited or out during that time to improve his recovery. Nobody knows what the Broncos offense will look like in 2017 as they don't yet have a new head coach. No matter who is hired, Anderson should have a sizable role once again -- so long as he can stay healthy.

HOU - QB Tom Savage cleared

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) has been cleared from the concussion protocol and will be able to practice this week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Brock Osweiler winning the playoff game against the Raiders, there should be no QB controversy in Houston. If Osweiler struggles against the Patriots, then perhaps Savage could take over in desperation mode.

CLE - Pep Hamilton leaving Browns

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Cleveland Browns assistant head coach Pep Hamilton has left the Browns to join the University of Michigan coaching staff, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hamilton worked under Jim Harbaugh with Stanford, and he'll do the same thing again with the Wolverines.

JAX - David Caldwell receives extension

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell signed a two-year contract extension Monday, Jan. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars are keeping Caldwell on an extension that ties him to new head coach Doug Marrone and VP of Football Tom Coughlin's 3-year contracts. Caldwell can draft talent (especially on defense), but the Jaguars need QB Blake Bortles to further develop as quickly as possible.

NFL - Mitch Trubisky declares for draft

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

North Carolina QB Mitch Trubisky announced Monday, Jan. 9, that he will enter the NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trubisky is going to be a first-round pick, and there's a chance he goes off the board in the top 10 of the 2017 NFL draft. When the pocket is clean, Trubisky has the ability to fire-back shoulder throws on deep targets. He played in a screen-heavy offense, but when given time Trubisky will look deep. Often late to respond to pressure, Trubisky doesn't have the arm to just sling passes into tight spots.

KC - RB Spencer Ware expected to be full-speed

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (ribs) should be 'good to go' for the team's Divisional Round matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Andy Reid.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs can play defense against the high-powered Steelers offense by feeding Ware early and often. They don't want to get into a shootout with Ben Roethlisberger, so we're expecting a slowed down gameplan for Kansas City in the Divisional Round.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz wants to remain in New York

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz finished the season with 39 receptions for 586 yards and one touchdown after missing most of the previous two years with knee and calf injuries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was great to see Cruz back in action, but his future with the Giants is up in the air. He wants to return, but he is slated to make $6.4 million (and count $9.4 million against the cap) in 2017.

BAL - Baltimore wants to add big-play RB

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RBs Kenneth Dixon and Terrance West appear to be on solid footing with the team, but head coach John Harbaugh hinted the Ravens will be interested in adding a player to the mix that could help them improve on the seven 20-yard plays (six runs, one reception) his backs created in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a great running back draft class, and the Ravens will have plenty of choices. They could wait until the fourth round and still potentially add a playmaker like San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey. He's not built to be a full-time running back in the NFL, but Pumphrey can score anytime he touches the ball.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah will be ready

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (foot) said Monday, Jan. 9, that he intends to be ready for spring workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah should be ready, he was hurt in Week 2 and never returned to the field in 2016. He's built more like a change-of-pace runner than he is any sort of featured back. Abdullah could thrive in a specific role, perhaps working in tandem with Zach Zenner in 2017.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford hasn't had contract talks

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he hasn't been approached by the team about a contract extension yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stafford is on the books for $16.5 million in 2017, and he's set to be a free agent in 2018. His injured finger ended up costing the Lions late in the year and in the playoff game against the Seahawks on Saturday. Even with that injury, Stafford passes for 4,327 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2016.

DET - RB Theo Riddick in a cast

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick (wrist) had his left wrist in a hard cast Monday, Jan. 9, but he said he hasn't had surgery on it.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Riddick was a PPR flex play when healthy, but he only played in 10 games this season. He finished the season on Injured Reserve and missed the Lions postseason run. Riddick had 357 yards rushing this year, one rushing touchdown along with 371 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. A free agent in 2017, it will be interesting to see if the Lions make a move to keep Riddick on the team.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount played well against HOU

    Source: WEEI.com - Mike Petraglia

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount had 24 rushes for 105 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We should see Blount get a heavy workload again in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Using Blount to soften up the Texans defense will help keep them honest against QB Tom Brady and slow down the Houston pass rushers.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray open to extension

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Jerry McDonald

The agent for Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray has had talks with the team about a contract extension. Murray has said he'd like to stay with the team that drafted him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A sixth-round pick for the Raiders in 2013, Murray can be a bruising featured back. He'll command some interest if he makes it to the open market. This year the Raiders added two talented rookie RBs in Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington but both are more of the change-of-pace type.

GB - Geronimo Allison could have big role

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Geronimo Allison will 'have to step up and play extended time' if WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) is unable to play against the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round of the playoffs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allison stepped up with Randall Cobb banged up, and now he has to do the same if Nelson is down. The undrafted rookie from Illinois can make difficult catches seem routine, and he makes plays with a large catch radius.

It seems that whoever plays at WR, Aaron Rogers will find them. Giving him enough time to do so is the thing. The Offensive Line did a great job of it in recent games, but can they manage David Irving and Company?

That is what I saw in the Giants game. Rodgers dancing in the pocket. He is playing well. Got to believe he takes revenge on the Cowboys for the regular season game.

    Wednesday Update

PIT - Roethlisberger's foot 'shouldn't be an issue'

Source: NFL Network - Andrew Siciliano

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (foot) may be held out of practice Wednesday, Jan. 11, but head coach Mike Tomlin told the media Tuesday, Jan. 10, that Roethlisberger's foot injury 'shouldn't be an issue.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All reports have been positive about Roethlisberger so far. He was in a walking boot after the Wild Card game against the Dolphins, but he should be able to practice at some point this week. Roethlisberger is on track to play against the Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

PIT - TE Ladarius Green remains in protocol

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) participated in two full practices last week before sitting out the last one of the week after the team did not get the results they wanted from him following a post-practice test, keeping him in the league's concussion protocol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nobody knows if Green is going to be ready for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. We'll get a clue about his availability if Green travels with the team to Kansas City.

ATL - TE Austin Hooper trending in right direction

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper (knee) moved around well during limited work last week, suggesting he is on track to play to suit up for the team's Divisional Round game this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll know more about Hooper's status later in the week. If he can participate (even if he's limited again) on Friday, then Hooper should be good to go for Saturday's home game against the Seahawks.

SEA - RB Marcel Reece should play

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Seattle Seahawks FB Marcel Reece (foot) is expected to play this weekend despite suffering a bruised foot in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Reece is a versatile weapon who can help Seattle in a number of ways. They'll need all the help they can get offensively as they travel to face a high-powered Falcons offense on Saturday.

SD - Vance Joseph will meet with Chargers

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will meet with the San Diego Chargers Wednesday, Jan. 11, after meeting with the Denver Broncos Tuesday, Jan. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he gets out of Denver that is. Joseph was once thought of as the Broncos top target and that it was his job to lose. After Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan blew them away with his interview last week, the Broncos may be leaning in a different direction.

CHI - WR Rueben Randle signs with Chicago

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent WR Rueben Randle (Eagles) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, Jan. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle was eligible to sign a futures contract with the Bears since he was out of football in 2016. They worked him out in November and must've felt like he was worth a shot. Randle had 938 receiving yards in 2014 and 797 receiving yards in 2015. There's a chance he could find a spot with the Bears, but he didn't do anything to impress a WR-needy Eagles team in 2016 training camp.

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (shoulder) will be cleared to play this weekend only if he can practice at full speed, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks could certainly use a big-play weapon like Prosise in their game on Saturday against the Falcons. We'll know more about his status on Friday.

Former Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's contract has expired.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders have the no.6 offense in the NFL, but it wasn't good enough for Musgrave to keep his job. Quarterbacks coach Todd Downing is an in-house candidate to take over as offensive coordinator.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore was cleared by both Miami's team physician and an unaffiliated neurological consultant before re-entering the game last week. He'll be clear to participate in Dolphins OTAs later this year.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles wants to keep playing

    Source: Jamaal Charles

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) stated on his website recently that he wants to continue playing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles has a $7 million cap number in 2017, and the Chiefs might want to move on with that salary (and no dead money left on the contract). Over the last two years, Charles has only played in eight games. When healthy, Charles still has the speed to gash defenses quickly. He'd get some interest on the open market if the Chiefs release him.

NFL - Deshaun Watson going pro

    Source: ESPN.com

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson has announced he will enter 2017 NFL Draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After winning it all with Clemson on Monday night, Watson has nothing left to prove. A plus athlete, Watson is tough and proved that he can take big hits and stay aggressive as a passer. He's a first-round pick for sure, but after his performance in the title game we could see him as a top-5 pick or perhaps even number one overall.

SF - Vance Joseph to interview for 49ers

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will interview for the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching vacancy Thursday, Jan. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's if the Broncos don't hire him on Tuesday or Wednesday. Seen as the top candidate in Denver, Joseph could land the best job opening in the NFL. The Broncos still have a great core on defense and arguably the league's best secondary. Joseph could then hire someone like Mike McCoy to run the offense and get more production out of that side of the ball. The 49ers could use a guy like Joseph as well, but they may not get the chance if Denver strikes quickly.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater's option likely exercised

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) is likely to have his fifth-year option picked up for the 2018 season. Bridgewater is under contract for $2.18 million for 2017, and the 2018 option could be worth more than $11 million. However, it would give the team a full year to assess him after his major knee injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That would be a wise move for the Vikings. Nobody knows how Bridgewater is going to come back from his horrific knee injury, so the Vikings need to kind of wait and see.

DEN - Kyle Shanahan 'impressed' in interview

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan 'impressed' in his interview with the Denver Broncos Saturday, Jan. 7. As a result, he may have narrowed the gap with the 'perceived favorite,' Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos could use someone to boost that offense, and Shanahan would do the trick. They need to find a coach that could get the most out of their 2016 first-round pick QB Paxton Lynch. Shanahan could follow in the footsteps of his father, Mike Shanahan, and go work with John Elway to get the Broncos back in a Super Bowl window. They're closer than some may think, and adding a guy like Kyle Shanahan could put them over the top.

Will the Browns Draft Deshaun Watson? If I were the browns I would trade down and get lots of picks. I like Watson but just think the Browns need to get a better offense first.

They could trade down for a bushel of picks and sign Tyrod Taylor to play QB.

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has agreed to become the Buffalo Bills new head coach.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A defensive minded coach, McDermott is set to change the Bills to a 4-3 defense. He's never been a head coach in his career, and it will be interesting to see how he builds the offense. Mike McCoy may be added as the team's offensive coordinator, but we have no idea who the QB will be next year.

DEN - Denver hires Vance Joseph

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was officially named the new head coach for the Denver Broncos Wednesday, Jan. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Joseph was a hot name in coaching circles, and he takes over a Broncos team that may only need some slight changes to get back into a Super Bowl window. He's known as a strong leader and talent evaluator, and Joseph will have to work with strong personalities...especially on the defensive side...in Denver. A defensive coach, his biggest challenge will come on the offensive side of the ball. Joseph has to figure out how to get the most of 2016 first-round pick QB Paxton Lynch.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is scheduled to interview for the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator position Thursday, Jan. 12, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy was the OC with the Broncos from 2009-2012. He's known for his versatile offensive mind, and that could come into play with a Broncos offense that was often morose. McCoy would likely be able to get the most out of first-round QB Paxton Lynch.

    17. DAL - QB Tony Romo leads NFL in cap burden Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will have the highest individual salary cap charge in the NFL entering the 2017 fiscal year. He is set to count $24.7 million against Dallas' cap next season, according to Spotrac.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just another reason why we don't think Romo is back with the Cowboys in 2017. Dallas currently has the least amount of projected cap space in 2017. It is widely believed Romo will be traded, which almost certainly would lead to a restructuring of his current deal.

BAL - Could WR Steve Smith return?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Recently retired Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith isn't being ruled out for a return in 2017, according to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti. 'I haven't given up hope that (he) is going to come walking in here in September,' Bisciotti said. 'We'll see about that character. I wouldn't count him out.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Never say never in the NFL. Smith has a fire that burns hot, and he'll likely miss the grind of the league. He retired to spend more time with his family, and that may be what keeps him from returning. Either way, it's been a great run for Smith and we expect to see him in Canton some day.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart a possible cut?

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart could be a possible cut in the offseason, in the opinion of beat writer David Newton. The move would save the team $6.25 million with a post-June 1 designation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The language of the NFL is money, so a move away from Stewart wouldn't be a surprise given his price tag. He hasn't had a 1,000-yard season since 2009, and he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2011. Stewart has missed three games each of the last three years. Oh yeah...this is an incredibly strong draft class at the running back position.

    Friday Update

SD - San Diego hiring Anthony Lynn as HC

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

The San Diego Chargers are finalizing a deal to make Buffalo Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn their head coach Thursday, Jan. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynn is an interesting hire, as he did a fairly good job with the mess that was the Buffalo offense. Philip Rivers is in need of a tuneup again, and turned over the ball way too often at the end of this year. There's talent in the soon-to-be-LA Chargers, and they hope Lynn is finally the guy to pull it all together.

LA - Sean McVay hired by Rams

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay has been hired as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, according to a source. McVay is now the youngest head coach in NFL history. He turns 31 on Jan. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McVay was certainly a fast riser through the coaching ranks. He was an assistant tight ends coach with Washington back in 2010, and McVay worked his way up to offensive coordinator. This is certainly a high-risk/high-reward hiring by the Rams, and we'll see how McVay works with 2016 first-round pick QB Jared Goff.

The Buffalo Bills hired Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Leslie Frazier as their defensive coordinator Thursday, Jan. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Frazier has some success before as a defensive coordinator and he certainly has the talent to work with in Buffalo, including three high draft picks from last year. The defense was inconsistent under Rex Ryan's head coaching tenure, and Frazier should get that under control.

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (non-injury) returned to practice Thursday, Jan. 12, and was a full participant.

Rawls was a beast against a lackluster Lions run defense, and he will be tasked with wearing down the Atlanta front as well. We expect him to have a pretty solid day as long as the Falcons don't find a way to run a lead up and confuse the Seattle secondary as they did in the third quarter of their Week 6 meeting.

Studesville may be on his way out in Denver even though he has one year left on his contract. He was the interim coach for the Broncos in 2010 after Josh McDaniels was fired. Since then, Studesville has worked to build a strong Broncos rushing attack. That hasn't worked out as planned with injuries and inconsistencies plaguing the Denver ground game.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch to compete for QB job

    Source: SI.com - Albert Breer

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch will have a competition with QB Trevor Siemian for the starting quarterback job next season, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch is Elway's first-round pick from 2016, and he should get a chance to start right off the bat for the Broncos. If Mike McCoy is hired as the Broncos OC, he should be able to craft an up-tempo, shotgun-heavy offense that works to the strengths of Lynch.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz may be cap casualty

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz could be a cap casualty this offseason because the team would save $7.5 million in salary cap space if he is released. He is currently scheduled to count $9.4 million against the 2017 salary cap.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perhaps Cruz can re-work his deal to stay with the Giants. If he's on the open market, there should be a few teams interested.

GB - WR Jeff Janis back at practice

    Source: ESPNWisconsin.com - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (quadriceps) is participating in practice Thursday, Jan. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Janis has been a routine disappointment to most Green Bay fans and will remained mired among the "other" receivers not named Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Even rookie Geronimo Allison is higher in the pecking order.

CAR - WR Ted Ginn will be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ginn improved as a receiver in Carolina, but is still a middling option for teams. It's worth seeing where he lands but his upside is extremely limited.

BUF - WR Marquise Goodwin will be UFA

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Goodwin runs really fast in a straight line, but that's about the sum of his skills. Someone will take a shot on him for that alone, but his impact in any offense is limited and inconsistent.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron wants to keep playing

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Jordan Cameron (concussion) plans to continue his playing career even though he has a history of concussions. The Dolphins are not expected to re-sign Cameron this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, at least he has the information to make an informed decision, though we wonder how many teams will take on the risk. Cameron is very talented, but concussed far too much.

MIA - Coach wants TE Dion Sims back

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Dion Sims said head coach Adam Gase told him that he wants Sims to re-sign with the Dolphins and that Sims would be the starting tight end. 'He told me he wants me back as a No. 1,' Sims said. 'I want to be back. I have obviously proven myself to be a starting tight end in the league and want to continue in that role. I've done some great things this year and improved a lot.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sims has been sporadically useful in fantasy but with the host of other weapons in Miami, his role will never be all that huge, even as the "Number 1."

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount sits again

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (illness) is out of practice again Thursday, Jan. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're a little concerned, but still expect a big day from Blount, who manhandled the Texans in Week 3 with 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Houston run defense has improved, but he will still be a key.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles still the QB

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was endorsed as the team's quarterback Thursday, Jan. 12, by executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They invested enough in him, and there is a strong argument that part of his massive regression this year was due to underwhelming coaching and playcalling. Bortles through more passes (625 this year vs 606 in 2015) but fewer interceptions (16 this season vs 18 last year) so there is some cause for optimism.

    Saturday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson ruled out

    Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) has been ruled out for the divisional round game against the Dallas Cowboys. He's feeling better every day, according to head coach Mike McCarthy, and the team will re-evaluate him Monday, Jan. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bad news for the Packers here. They'll need all the firepower they can muster against the Cowboys on Sunday. Without Nelson, QB Aaron Rodgers may not be as effective. They'll be turning to guys like Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and rookie Geronimo Allison to do more in the Divisional Round.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger ready to play

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 13, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If you want to see something scary, look at the home/road splits for Roethlisberger. Their last game against the Chiefs was a blowout win, but the Steelers are traveling to Kansas City this time around. In 2016, Roethlisberger has 22 passing TDs at home and only nine on the road. He only has seven interceptions at home this year, but he's got eight interceptions on the road. The Steelers would be wise to feed RB Le'Veon Bell as much as possible.

Green won't play this week, and his status is unknown for the AFC Championship Game if the Steelers win on Sunday night.

DEN - Greg Knapp will not return

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp has been relieved of his duties, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Knapp was part of the Kubiak regime that decided not to play first-round pick Paxton Lynch in a meaningless Week 17 game. It's no surprise that he's being shown the door. The coaching staff was supposed to get Lynch ready all year, and the rookie barely saw the field as the coaches kept going back to a banged up (and largely ineffective) Trevor Siemian.

Denver Broncos wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert will remain on the team's coaching staff under head coach Vance Joseph, according to sources.

Tolbert was getting some interest from the Titans, but he ends up staying in Denver. The Broncos have two great WRs in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but the team sure could be helped by finding that solid no.3 wideout. We'll see if Tolbert can develop a guy.

The Denver Broncos hired former NFL head coach Mike McCoy as their new offensive coordinator Friday, Jan. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be snowy conditions with the game moved to Sunday night due to weather concerns. This is a game built on 'snowplow' backs like Ware. The Chiefs will try to take the air out of the football with their rushing attack.

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (illness) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 13, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional round playoff game against the Houston Texans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blount's been sick this week, but it sounds like he's good to go for the Divisional Round. The Patriots should have their way with the Texans in whatever way they want.

    Source: NFL

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 13, but is not on the injury report for the Divisional round playoff game against the New England Patriots.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Texans are bold and aggressive, they may be able to put up a fight against the Patriots. Nobody outside of Houston (and plenty within the city limits) is giving the Texans any chance.

ATL - WR Julio Jones not on injury report

    Source: NFL

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 13, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional round playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The game against the Seahawks has shootout potential. Jones has a tough matchup, but that hasn't stopped him before. With other assets in the passing game providing threats to the defense, Jones may be able to shake free for a big play here or there.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls on track to play

    Source: NFL

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 13, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional round playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Seahawks want to avoid getting behind to a high-powered Atlanta offense, then they should feed Rawls as much as possible. They won't be able to stick with the ground game if they have to play catch-up football.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise practices in full

    Source: NFL

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 13, and is listed as questionable for the Divisional round playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prosise is a game-time decision for the Seahawks. He's a great receiving threat out of the backfield, and if he plays it would give QB Russell Wilson another weapon to target.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers are going to be without Jordy Nelson on Sunday. They could use a big game from Cobb if he can once again torch an opposing defense.

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen will be a restricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thielen will be tendered, and it probably won't be an original round tender for the fourth-year UDFA. He's set to be the Vikings no.2 receiver in 2017, but he'll be competing with 2016 first-round pick Laquan Treadwell for that spot. Either way, Thielen has shown the ability to be a big-play threat in an offense that needs that type of playmaker.

Cook made it through 10 games with the Packers this year, and there were times in the regular season (Week 11 vs Washington) that he looked like the player he always could be. The potential and talent has always been there with Cook, but staying healthy and staying consistent holds him back.

WAS - WR Pierre Garcon says he is not possession WR

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon said he does not want to be called a possession receiver because he can do more than what the Redskins asked him to do in 2016. 'I definitely want people to stop thinking I'm a possession receiver because they gave me a job to do,' Garcon said. 'That doesn't mean I can't go deep and I can't run fast, because I ran fast and went deep this year more than I probably ever did. Every year is different from the playcalling. But I want people to stop thinking that I'm a slow guy, and I'm not slowing down anytime soon.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

His 13.1 YPC average this year ranks 49th in the league while his teammate DeSean Jackson led the NFL with a 17.95 YPC average. Playing the possession role was what Garcon was asked to do, and he did his job well...in fact his YPC was about a 3-yard rise from his average as a Washington wideout. Don't be surprised if a team like Baltimore shows some interest in Garcon on the open market.

Crowell should be brought back as the team's top back in 2017. He had career highs in rushing attempts (198), rushing yards (952), receptions (40) and receiving yards (319) in 2016.

Pryor has worked hard in his transition from QB to WR in the NFL...and that work paid off this year. He caught 77 passes for 1,002 yards and four touchdowns in 2016...and he did that while playing the last month with a finger injury.

O'Brien may have been on the hot seat before the team's Wild Card game last week. A victory (thanks Brock!) pretty much sealed O'Brien's status with the team. He'll be back in 2017, but there's no guarantee after that.
