NFL Player News - Week of 8/8/16

CLE - WR Terrelle Pryor the No. 2 WR in Cleveland? Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor is the team's No. 2 receiver heading into the preseason, according to ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pryor has size and speed to be a mismatch for any cornerback. While Josh Gordon is out, he can hold down the spot opposite Corey Coleman and be a big play threat for Robert Griffin III. It looks like the conversion to wide receiver is taking, and Pryor has the kind of rare measureables that can equal a high ceiling for a wideout.

NE - WR Julian Edelman practicing

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) is participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman is back a little earlier than anticipated, which is a great sign considering how cautious the Patriots are being with Dion Lewis. He's going in the third or fourth round, which should be a good value considering Edelman was a PPR WR1 last year. If he continues to be as involved in the red zone as he was last year, Edelman could be a steal as a WR2.

CHI - Hroniss Grasu has torn ACL

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Patrick Finley

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears C Hroniss Grasu (knee) has suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He will be required to undergo surgery and is expected to miss the 2016 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grasu was having a great summer and seemed to be turning into a cornerstone of the offensive line. Now the team will have to turn to rookie Cody Whitehair or veteran Ted Larsen. This is a big loss for an offense that is moving forward without Matt Forte and Martellus Bennett for the first time since 2012.

TEN - RB Derrick Henry responds to critique

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry was much better in the tempo portion of practice Friday, Aug. 5, according to head coach Mike Mularkey. Mularkery criticized Henry for his slow starts to practice the previous day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry hasn't been generating buzz in training camp, while DeMarco Murray appears to be a coach's favorite in Tennessee. While Henry's impressive size/athleticism combination could pop on the field and cause the team to re-think the position, right now it seems like Murray is the starter. For now. We love to see how Henry responded here so stay tuned.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray having strong camp

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray is 'cruising' through training camp, according to beat writer Vic Tafur.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray didn't seem to have the confidence of the organization this offseason, but he is the starter and set up to get 300+ touches again behind a great offensive line unless fifth-round pick DeAndre Washington really impresses as a rookie - which is possible. Murray should be a solid RB2 as long as he is the starter, and the quality of the offensive line and passing game could make him even better even if he doesn't improve from last year's mediocre level of play.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls activated off PUP

    Source: NFLCommunications.com - Randall Liu

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most of the hand-wringing about Rawls is over, even with the team revealing that he did have surgery on his ankle this offseason. As long as Rawls gets through his first few practices without incident, he can safely be drafted in fourth or even third round as an RB2 who can be a borderline RB1 - assuming the Seahawks offensive line comes together.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman sits out Saturday

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Dan Labbe

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) did not participate in the team's scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 6, because of a minor hamstring injury. Head coach Hue Jackson said Coleman will be fine moving forward.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman is set up to be the team's #1 target to open the season with Josh Gordon suspended. Robert Griffin III will need to get the ball out of his hands quickly to keep from getting antsy or hurt in the pocket, so Coleman's PPR prospects are bright.

HOU - RB Lamar Miller not practicing

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This ankle injury sounded minor when it was first reported and Miller returned to practice, but with time this kind of injury can get worse. As long as Miller doesn't miss more than a week of practice, we can treat this absence as more precaution than warning sign.

DEN - Denver starting QB still undecided

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez and QB Trevor Siemian will continue to compete for the starting quarterback spot, and head coach Gary Kubiak said he hasn't even 'come close' to deciding on the starter for the preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not a good look for a team coming off of a Super Bowl season. They did drag Peyton Manning to a title last year, but if the team doesn't have confidence in their starting quarterback, it can start to affect team unity and morale. There won't be fantasy relevance at the quarterback position in Denver this year, and it could affect the value of their outstanding top two wide receivers.

CLE - QB Robert Griffin III set to start?

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III has improved every day and has 'accepted every challenge' given to him, head coach Hue Jackson said Saturday, Aug. 6. Jackson also said he is 'very close' to naming a starting quarterback.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns are the only ones who haven't openly embraced Griffin as the starting quarterback. The only real question is whether the team will keep Josh McCown to back him up in case of injury or poor play.

NE - New England perfect spot for RB Donald Brown

Source: Boston Herald - Adam Kurkjian

New England Patriots RB Donald Brown could not have landed in a better spot when he signed with the Patriots back in March, according to Hall-of-Fame executive Bill Polian, who chose the 29-year-old in the first round of the 2009 draft while he was the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is battling James White for the very valuable backup to Dion Lewis position that made White a PPR RB1 while Lewis was out last year. He could also get a few carries in the base offense as a bigger back.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews practices Sunday

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) worked with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 7, and appeared to be a full participant.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews seems to be all the way back from his ankle injury. If he gets through August without incident, he could end up being a value, assuming he has an ADP drop after his pre-camp injury cost him the first week plus of camp.

OAK - PK Giorgio Tavecchio pushing for roster spot

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders PK Giorgio Tavecchio is competing with PK Sebastian Janikowski for the kicker job during training camp, according to special teams coach Brad Seely. Seely said Janikowski is the frontrunner because of his experience.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Janikowski is getting paid 3.6 million dollars this year, which could factor in if the battle is close.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews held out of practice Source: USA TODAY Sports - Turron Davenport

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) did not practice Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews knee injury wasn't serious, but the team is being cautious after he had a scare earlier in the week.

NYJ - TE Jace Amaro keeps making plays

    Source: NJ.com

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro's highlights during practice Friday, Aug. 5, included a deep catch down the seam in double coverage and a touchdown in the red zone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Amaro is reviving his career after his first two seasons were almost a total loss. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey should be a good fit for Amaro's receiving ability if he can stay healthy and play consistently. The Jets don't have a quality third receiving option, so Amaro could carve out a role for himself.

NE - RB James White wants to be complete back

Source: Boston Herald - Rich Thompson

New England Patriots RB James White has been working on his run reads and pass blocking during training camp, and he said his goal is to upgrade his skills as a runner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White is facing competition from rookie DJ Foster and veteran Donald Brown for the backup receiving back job. In that role last year, White was a PPR RB1 after Dion Lewis went down. Lewis still hasn't returned to the field yet, so this role could be very valuable for fantasy leagues to open the season.

BAL - Competition helping TE Maxx Williams

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Mike Preston

Baltimore Ravens TE Maxx Williams has looked healthier and stronger during training camp this year, according to beat writer Mike Preston, and Preston believes the added competition from TE Dennis Pitta and TE Benjamin Watson is making Williams a better player.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams probably won't have fantasy relevance this year, but his improvement is making him poised to take over the Ravens tight end position in the future. He's definitely still worth the stash in dynasty leagues even though he isn't on the redraft radar.

    Tuesday Update

DET - TE Eric Ebron has sprained ankle Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) has a 'pretty decent' right ankle sprain, according to a source. Lions head coach Jim Caldwell refused to address the injury when asked Monday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A severely sprained ankle is a lot better than the Achilles' injury this could have been. Ebron is going to get plenty of time off to recover. We weren't high on him from a fantasy perspective anyway and feel that veteran WR Anquan Boldin can be a fine target on the underneath routes where Ebron would (will?) be.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews injury update

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) is expected to miss two to four weeks because of a bone bruise in his knee, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't what the Eagles need here. Matthews may be back for Week 3 of the preseason, but the team could also shut him down for the entire preseason. It looks like he'll be back at some point before the start of the regular season. The upside is it's not a ligament tear.

DEN - Co-starters at QB in Denver

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez and QB Trevor Siemian are listed as co-starters on the team's first depth chart Monday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a terrible sign for Sanchez, who should be separating from a pedestrian talent like Siemian. The Broncos have the most unsettled quarterback situation in the league, which isn't comforting if you are taking either of their talented starting wide receivers in your draft.

CLE - QB Robert Griffin III named starter

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III was named the starting quarterback Monday, Aug. 8, by head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

To the surprise of no one. Griffin's targets look a lot better than they did when he was signed with Corey Coleman and Josh Gordon in the mix, and Jackson has usually gotten the most out of his offenses. Griffin is worth a pick as a high ceiling QB2, and streamers might like his opening weekend matchup against Philadelphia's defense switching back to a 4-3.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi listed as starter

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is listed as the starter on the team's preseason Week 1 depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't read too much into this, as both he and Arian Foster will be used heavily in the Dolphins backfield. Foster is the better PPR play as long as he is on the field, but Ajayi is more likely to be able to help our fantasy teams at the end of the season. Taking both backs after the 7th or 8th round as a PPR RB2BC and waiting for injuries or Foster's level of play to sort it out is a strategy that could work this year.

GB - TE Jared Cook nearing a return

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers TE Jared Cook (foot) might return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list next week, QB Aaron Rodgers said Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team was giving Kellen Winslow a tryout, which could have been seen as a bad sign for Cook, but this news is much more optimistic. Cook is a late round pick at best, but one with the ability to stretch the field and put up big plays for the Packers offense, although he'll split his position snaps with Richard Rodgers.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson might return soon

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) might return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list next week, QB Aaron Rodgers said Sunday, Aug. 7. Previously there had been no confirmation from the team's management on a timetable for Nelson's return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is positive news because Nelson didn't have a timeline to return to the field, but we would still like to see him play in the preseason before spending a second-round pick on him. If Nelson is not his usual self or struggles with knee issues this year, it will likely affect the whole Packers offense, as his injury limited the entire offense last year.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard listed as starter

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard is listed as one of the starting wide receivers on the team's first depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited by Shepard in this offense. The team is going to live and die through the air with QB Eli Manning and superstar WR Odell Beckham Jr. leading the way. Shepard has quickness and explosive playmaking ability akin to that of Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett. The rookie should see a lot of single coverage opposite Beckham, and we love him as a WR4 with upside.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz to play a lot Thursday

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Paul Domowitch

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz will receive most of the snaps in the second half of the preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Aug. 11. QBs Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel will play in the first half, while QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson could receive one or two series in the fourth quarter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a lot to like about Wentz. He's a strong leader and the type of player who can rally a team around him. Wentz does a good job of going through progressions and staying aggressive with his reads. The rookie will have some growing pains and is unlikely to see the field much in the regular season so long as Bradford stays healthy.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman unsure of first game

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) said his left hamstring felt fatigued Friday, Aug. 5. Coleman will play it by ear as to whether or not he'll play in the Browns' first preseason game Friday, Aug. 12, against the Green Bay Packers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Speed is Coleman's game, so a hamstring injury can impact him more than other receivers. We think the team should be careful here with the rookie. Coleman has been wowing in training camp, and he's likely to be the featured WR while Josh Gordon is suspended the first four games of the year.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery returns

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 8, but his workload is yet to be determined.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a sign that Jeffery's hamstring issue was minor and his sitting was more a precaution than time for an injury to heal. That being said, we'll be holding our breath while he goes through his first few practices back with no news being good news.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins passes physical

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) passed his physical Monday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins is on track to earn an early third round ADP, if not late second. We will project him as a WR1 any time he is on the field and off of the injury report, the only question is how often that will happen.

JAX - WR Allen Robinson looks 'much better'

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson appears to be a different receiver in training camp so far and a much better receiver at that due to improved route-running and a more aggressive mentality in pursuing the ball in the air, according to Jaguars.com senior writer John Oehser.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson could be even better and more efficient on his opportunity, but if the Jaguars are a better team, then they will be more balanced and pass less than they did last year. He's worth a late first/early second round pick and going as early as the mid-first in some leagues.

NYG - TE Larry Donnell on top of depth chart

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants TE Larry Donnell is listed as the starting tight end on the team's first depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Donnell versus Will Tye is going to be a battle worth monitoring in the preseason. We're excited by the Giants passing game, and the TE could have some fantasy value...unless both split time. If one emerges, there could be TE2 value here for fantasy owners.

MIN - WR Charles Johnson a starter for now

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings WR Charles Johnson is listed as a starting split end wide receiver on the team's first depth chart with WR Laquon Treadwell as the backup at the position.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't expect that to last. Treadwell has tremendous upside and has drawn pro comparisons to DeAndre Hopkins (Texans) because of his body control and ability to make difficult catches seem routine.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon needs to shed pounds

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) will hopefully return to practice soon, according to head coach Hue Jackson, but Jackson said Gordon would be the first to say he needs to lose some weight.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's been awhile since Gordon played football, so getting back into shape...and needing to get into football shape specifically...is no surprise.

JAX - RB Chris Ivory, RB T.J. Yeldon are co-starters

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars RBs Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon are listed as co-starters on the Jaguars' first depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners know this will be a split backfield, and that's why both have fantasy values close to each other. Right now, Ivory is going off the board at RB35 (8.02) while Yeldon is getting drafted as RB39 (9.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CIN - WR Brandon LaFell ahead of WR Tyler Boyd

    Source: Bengals.com

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell is listed ahead of rookie WR Tyler Boyd on the Begnals' initial depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

LaFell is there for now, but it won't be long before he's dropping passes and frustrating fantasy owners. We like Boyd's upside in dynasty leagues. The rookie from PITT has some Keenan Allen (Chargers) to his game. It shouldn't take long for him to overtake the inconsistent veteran LaFell.

OAK - TE Clive Walford listed as backup
Source: Bay Area News Group - Jimmy Durkin

Oakland Raiders TE Clive Walford is not listed as the starting tight end on Raiders' initial depth chart. TE Lee Smith is listed ahead of Walford.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walford is a favorite dynasty TE for us, but he clearly needs to impress more in camp to win that top spot on the depth chart. Smith is a big TE, but he lacks the athleticism and seam-stretching ability of Walford.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor has long leash

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor will be given plenty of opportunities to redeem himself after a turbulent offseason and disappointing 2015 rookie campaign. He is slated to be the No. 2 starter and is focused on improving his 52.2% reception rate from a year ago.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's reasons to think Agholor can bounce back after a rookie season that is best forgotten. Agholor has the quick-twitch ability to get open on slant routes, and that's how the new Eagles offense should feature him. It's the Doug Pederson offense, so they're not exactly going to fill the air with footballs. However, we're not as quick to write off Agholor from a dynasty perspective as others are.

CLE - CB Joe Haden returns

Source: 92.3 The Fan - Daryl Ruiter

Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (ankle) passed his physical and returned to practice Monday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Haden's 2015 consisted of only five games played. He's easily the team's best corner, so his health and level of play will be a big part of forecasting weekly fantasy prospects for opposing WR1s.

Not really, at least Broncos had two competent quarterbacks last year. Sanchez is less than that and not sure if Siemian is NFL ready.

It won't matter much later in the season though once Lynch takes over for the next decade.

    Wednesday Update

NE - WR Julian Edelman injury not serious

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed) suffered an injury in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, but it is not believed to be serious, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners can all breathe a sigh of relief here. We'll continue to watch this situation closely, but know that New England is pretty tight when it comes to injury information...or updates on injured players. Stay tuned.

BAL - RB Justin Forsett looks great

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Ryan Mink

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett looks like he did during his 2014 breakout campaign, according to Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. 'I see the same running back we had two years ago, in terms of his speed, his explosiveness, his vision,' Harbaugh said. 'He really looks good. I know there's a lot of talk about the other guys, but he's playing really well.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Message! Forsett's current ADP of RB34 (8.01 in 12-team PPR) is too low, but if he keeps impressing in camp we predict it will rise. In 2014, Forsett finished as a top-10 fantasy RB in standard-scoring leagues. Last year, a broken forearm held him to just 10 appearances. Savvy fantasy owners can scoop up Forsett and perhaps get RB2 value. The Ravens offense should look more cohesive with QB Joe Flacco healthy, plus the team is in year two with OC Marc Trestman.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls' status still unclear

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls should tote the rock as much as possible if healthy. We see him as a high-end RB2 for fantasy owners this year. Keep track of his health status as we go through the preseason.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise could play next week

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks rookie RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) has a chance to play in the second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings next week, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team likes the rookie from Notre Dame, and he was the first of three RBs they chose in the 2016 NFL draft. A converted WR, Prosise is a work in progress as a runner but a fine receiver out of the backfield. Perhaps they'll use the rookie as a part-time player behind starter Thomas Rawls.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed will sit Thursday Source: Redskins.com

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (thumb) will not be active Thursday, Aug. 11, against the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is an easy TE1 for fantasy owners in 2016...if he's healthy. He's a talented move TE who creates mismatches for Washington, but Reed is also known to get banged up quite a bit. We're glad the team isn't going to push him in an exhibition game. So long as he's ready by Week 1, we're good with Reed sitting or a game or two in the preseason.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch will play a lot

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos rookie QB Paxton Lynch will play the entire second half of Denver's first preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 11. QB Trevor Siemian will play in the second quarter behind QB Mark Sanchez, who will start.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited to see Lynch in the preseason. From a dynasty perspective, he may have the highest upside of any QB in this draft class. The Kubiak offense can be quite explosive when clicking on all cylinders. This year with Sanchez or Siemian as the starting QB, expect the Broncos to run the ball early and often.

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez will start in preseason

Source: NFL Network - Andrew Siciliano

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez will start the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 11, against the Chicago Bears.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a bit of a surprise given the fact that Sanchez has been struggling in practice for the last six days or so. Siemian isn't setting the world on fire at Broncos camp, but he's not throwing the pick-sixes that Sanchez is on an every other day basis. We think Siemian could start Week 2 of the preseason and the team will monitor both to determine a Week 3 preseason starter...and the likely starter for the regular season. No matter who wins the starting QB job in Denver, they're only a QB3 for fantasy.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham close to a return

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Dave Boling

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) is 'right at the edge of getting back,' according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Simply put, the team was better without Graham last year. We'll see if he can fit better in the offense this year when healthy. Take a late-round flier on Graham as a TE2, but don't expect him to put up numbers like he did with the Saints.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker returns

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Chris Perkins

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (hamstring) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign that Parker's hamstring issue was very minor and his absence was more a precaution than giving him time to heal from an injury that has a risk of recurrence. As long as he gets through the next 2-3 practices without incident, this shouldn't be a black mark on his draft stock.

HOU - WR Jaelen Strong in starting position

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong was listed as the No. 2 wide receiver opposite WR DeAndre Hopkins on Houston's initial depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Strong is an intriguing dynasty prospect because of his size/ball skills combination. He's lost some weight this year to be more explosive, and he's been impressing in camp. The passing game is all about Hopkins, but Strong may perform like a WR6 for fantasy owners in 2016.

GB - TE Jared Cook returns from PUP list

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Green Bay Packers TE Jared Cook (foot) has been cleared and is coming off the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 9, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cook is going to compete with Richard Rodgers to be the top TE for the Packers. He's always had natural talent, but Cook has never played fully up to his potential. If healthy, we like the idea of him catching passes from QB Aaron Rodgers in 2016. Take a flier on him as a TE2 if he wins the starting job for the Packers.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz may not play Friday

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, with a tight groin, according to head coach Ben McAdoo. His status for Friday, Aug. 12, against the Miami Dolphins is uncertain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't need to see Cruz in the first week of the preseason. In fact, we don't really need to see him at all in the preseason. Instead, the team should make sure he's as healthy as possible for Week 1 of the regular season. We can't wait to see him salsa dance in the end zone again, but we are realistic about his current level of play. He's more of a WR7 and is unlikely to be the player he used to be after multiple injuries derailed his career starting in 2014.

ARI - WR John Brown won't play

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) will not play in the Cardinals' first preseason game Friday, Aug. 12, against the Oakland Raiders even if he is cleared to do so.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals are wise to take it easy on Brown. We may not see much of him until Week 3 of the preseason.

Source: New York Daily News - Daniel Popper

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 9. He is now eligible to return to practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Jets here. Wilkerson was rehabilitating from a broken leg he suffered in the regular season finale last year. The defensive end believes that he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

LA - QB Case Keenum the starter for now

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum has a real chance to open the season as a starter over QB Jared Goff, and that is the team's plan for now. Goff could change the team's minds in the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keenum was actually better than Nick Foles last year and he played decently under new offensive coordinator Rob Boras. The team also brought in Mike Groh, who worked under Adam Gase and Marc Trestman in Chicago, to coordinate the passing game. It can't get worse.

TB - WR Vincent Jackson banged up

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Greg Auman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson (undisclosed) is out of practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, as a maintenance day and because he's banged up, according to head coach Dirk Koetter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson had a knee injury that cost him a lot of 2015, so we would rather hear that he is feeling better than ever. He was a disappointment but his ADP that often puts him in the double digits rounds makes him pretty cheap for an accomplished wide receiver in a good pass offense.

San Diego Chargers WR James Jones has struggled in training camp to make clean releases off of the line of scrimmage.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones' best days are behind him, and it's possible that his temporary resurgence in 2015 was more due to chemistry with Aaron Rodgers than what Jones has left in the tank. Dynamic second-year UDFA Tyrell Williams could push Jones for a spot in three-wide sets with a good summer.

DEN - CB Aqib Talib facing suspension?

    Source: Mile High Sports

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib might be facing an eight-game suspension for his gunshot injury during the offseason. ESPN's Adam Schefter said in a radio interview with a Denver-area radio station that a knowledgeable part told him: 'I don't see how this is less than eight games.' If Talib is indeed suspended, CBs Bradley Roby and Kayvon Webster would be forced to pick up the slack.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos still have one of the best corners in the league in Chris Harris, but this would be a blow to a defense that lost Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson in free agency.

    Thursday Update

SD - Stevie Johnson out for the season Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson (knee) has learned he will miss the entire 2016 season following surgery to repair his torn meniscus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tough break for Johnson and the Chargers here. As NFL.com reported, as promising as Johnson's rapport was with Philip Rivers, he was unlikely to surpass Allen, Gates, Travis Benjamin and Danny Woodhead in the pecking order. We still like this offense and Philip Rivers.

NE - WR Julian Edelman back at practice

    Source: WEEI.com - Mike Petraglia

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yesterday's injury scare truly was just a scare. We'll exhale for now, but Edelman's injury history is still on our minds after the reports of his being frustrated after an issue with the same left leg that has a surgically repaired foot from this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook is an upside TE2 to take late in your draft if you want some punch to go along with a high floor TE1. Richard Rodgers will share the tight end position with Cook, but Cook is easily the more physically talented pass catcher.

KC - GM hopeful about RB Jamaal Charles

Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he is hopeful that RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be ready for the start of the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dorsey was "optimistic" and so are we. Charles hasn't been taken off of the PUP yet, but he has come all the way back from ACL surgery before. The Chiefs have two strong backups in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, so they might Charles back in to start the season. He's still worth a second-round pick and should return first-round value in PPR leagues once he's back up to speed.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman sitting out Wednesday

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 10 and will be missing his fourth straight practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman's absence isn't long enough to be worrisome yet, but we never want to see a rookie's momentum broken in August. Coleman was building momentum with dynamic plays in camp, and he could be a target hog without Josh Gordon in the lineup the first four weeks of the season.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham activated from PUP

    Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Danny O'Neil

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) was activated from the active/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good surprise, although not one that necessarily means Graham is "back" for fantasy. Graham was already a major disappointment for fantasy last year at full speed. He probably won't be himself, but if he's on the field it will be a good sign for players coming from patellar tears in the future.

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All outward signs have pointed to this being minor and Elliott's absence being precautionary, but if he doesn't practice next week or play in preseason Week 2, it might be time to reassess his place in our rankings.

DET - WR Marvin Jones the top target

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones has been the team's top receiver in camp, and it hasn't been close, as WR Golden Tate has had issues holding onto the football. Jones was targeted on seven of the 14 passes QB Matthew Stafford threw in the joint practice Tuesday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is going at least 2-3 rounds after Golden Tate in most drafts, but his red zone prowess and reports like this make that seem ill-advised.

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas continues to shine in the early days of training camp, and beat writer Jeff Duncan opines that Thomas looks like a bona fide playmaker. It appears Thomas has already earned the trust of his quarterbacks in camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas should get in the mix early and if he carries over his great spring and summer, he can get enough targets to be relevant in fantasy leagues. He should take over the role Marques Colston turned into over 1000 yards and 8 scores as a rookie.

WAS - RB Keith Marshall turning heads in camp

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Keith Marshall is firmly entrenched among the team's top three backs along with RBs Matt Jones and Chris Thompson, and there is a gap between that trio and the rest of the team's running backs, according to multiple sources. Marshall's speed has been the reason he has stood out, and he ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. 'He has that ability, when he does put that foot in the ground, he explodes through the line of scrimmage,' offensive coordinator Sean McVay said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall was one of the best high school RBs in the country when he went to Georgia. A major knee injury knocked him out for more than a full season for the Bulldogs, but if healthy those natural skills are still there. Marshall is a favorite dynasty RB of ours...and we'd even recommend taking him as a late "lottery ticket" pick in deeper re-draft leagues.

SF - QB Blaine Gabbert heavily favored to start

Source: The Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is considered an enormous favorite to start over QB Colin Kaepernick in the regular season opener, in the opinion of beat writer Tim Kawakami.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert isn't an exciting fantasy QB if he does start. The 49ers are going to run a lot of plays under head coach Chip Kelly, but quantity is not better than the quality is available at QB elsewhere.

CLE - WR Terrelle Pryor should play Friday

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor (calf) should be able to play in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
A sigh of relief if you are holding Pryor in a dynasty league or looking at him as a redraft sleeper. His calf injury is just a minor blip if the team is putting him out there a few days after he suffered it.

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb (calf) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 10.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no sign that this is something to worry about, but we'll check back when we get more details. Calf injuries can linger and have a risk of re-injury. The Packers might be without their top two receivers for their preseason opener.

SF - San Francisco to split QB reps in games

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will share snaps with the first-team offense during preseason games until the team is ready to name a starting quarterback, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers need to get this figured out sooner than later because the passing offense will likely have different strengths with Kaepernick than it will with Gabbert, and the team is installing a new offense under Chip Kelly. Most reports had Gabbert way ahead entering camp, so Kaepernick needs to impress to keep the heat on.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery iffy for preseason opener

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) is uncertain for the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos on Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team will be cautious with Jeffery, which will be good for his re-injury outlook, but that we are talking about this so early in August is a reason to fear this coming back up for Jeffery, whom the Bears didn't sign to a long-term deal in part because of his recent issues with soft tissue injuries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this point, the question is more whether Cruz will make the team than whether Cruz will play a fantasy friendly role. At the group of UDFAs and late picks behind Cruz have been impressing in camp.

SD - DE Joey Bosa, Bolts remain incommunicado

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

San Diego Chargers DE Joey Bosa has now gone 12 days without speaking to the team. He is the only remaining unsigned first-round pick from the 2016 draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This battle is basically over interest on part of Bosa's signing bonus and offset language that would compensate the Chargers if Bosa is released before the end of his rookie deal and signs elsewhere. In other words, it's basically nothing and both sides are having trouble seeing the benefit of just moving on. This is not a good look for a defense that has been lagging in recent years, but the Chargers are a very fiscally disciplined organization. Kansas City gets the Chargers defense in Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots traded Chandler Jones in the offseason, but they added Chris Long at defensive end. Ninkovich has been a core performer and producer in this defense for a while, so his absence will be felt, although Jabaal Sheard is probably the most valuable defensive end in the lineup.

    27. SF - QB Colin Kaepernick lagging behind in race

Source: The Mercury News - Tim Kawakami

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is considered a huge underdog in the race for the starting quarterback job with QB Blaine Gabbert, at least in the opinion of beat writer Tim Kawakami.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This shouldn't come as any surprise. Kaepernick had to come back from three offseason surgeries and that allowed Gabbert to take the first-team reps in minicamp and OTAs. We shall see if Kaepernick can make a move up the depth chart before the all important third preseason game.

    Friday Update

ARI - RB David Johnson will have help Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson will not be run into the ground early on in the regular season because RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will be able to help, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

From Arians: "I'm afraid to talk about him because I might get him hurt," joked Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. "But he can run it 25 times and he can catch it 15 times. The sky is the limit for his ability, because he can do so many things. I don't want to run him in the ground early, because we have Chris [Johnson] and Andre [Ellington]. We have a great group of running backs, so one guy doesn't have to get all the carries early in the season." How much will Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington see the field? Overall we have David Johnson as an excellent RB1, but if Arians starts splitting carries to keep the young player fresh, it will hurt his production. Arians has other more important things to worry about, but Fantasy GMs don't, so keep an eye on reports out of camp.

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We loved Green's potential, but injuries were always an issue. This leaves Jesse James and Xavier Grimble as potential replacements at the position with James getting our nod since he is far more versatile than Grimble. James could prove himself to have some low-end TE2 value.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A knee bruise to Ajayi opened the door to Foster stealing the starting job, and now the second-year back has a chance to convince the staff to give him more carries. At best though, he will split carries unless Foster is hurt, so we cannot recommend him as more than an RB3/RB4.

Head coach Chip Kelly said he took a 'planned rest day,' though no one notified the media of this before practice. He 'appeared' to injure his throwing shoulder during practice Tuesday, August 9, and did not throw well the next day, missing a few receivers by more than five yards and completing only 52% of his throws.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick is recovering from three offseason surgeries. The team is wise to ease him into action, but the delay has caused Blaine Gabbert to spring ahead in the competition.

SD - Teammate impressed with RB Melvin Gordon

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has had some of his best practices over the last few days, according to QB Philip Rivers. Rivers said he hopes Gordon will continue to improve.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon had a disappointing rookie season while averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and fumbling six times, so this is a positive sign. The offensive line should be better and the offense more effective which will prevent him from seeing a ton of stacked boxes. We are concerned about him regaining his explosiveness and speed after undergoing microfracture surgery, so that knocks him down a peg right now to a low-end RB2 or a high end RB3.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton owning Colts camp

    Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton has been arguably the best player on the field in training camp, according to Colts QB Andrew Luck. The quarterback noted Hilton's impressive consistency.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hilton is a tremendous player and if Andrew Luck bounces back this year as we expect him to, Hilton is likely to be a big part of that. He'll be an outstanding WR2 for fantasy purposes and will serve up some consistent production for his teams.

MIA - WR Leonte Carroo having a good camp

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR Leonte Carroo has been having a good camp, according to head coach Adam Gase, and the team is eager to see more. 'He's been making some positive plays,' Gase said. 'His biggest thing is mentally, what are we going to do? Is he going to keep growing? Are we going to get stuck? Are we going to have that rookie wall hit? He's going to keep rolling on that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carroo is an interesting rookie to keep an eye on. In college at Rutgers, Carroo was a deep target who does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. When developed, Carroo could be in the mix as a deep receiver this year.

IND - WR Phillip Dorsett showing improvement

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts WR Phillip Dorsett has been the 'most improved' player in camp. He's always possessed rare speed, but now he's also showing great skill in running clean routes and displaying consistent hands.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited about Dorsett's potential this year. He's got the speed to get by defenders quickly, and QB Andrew Luck should fire it deep early and often. He's a WR5 for fantasy owners with the potential to catch 50 or more passes in 2016.

SD - Two Chargers close to history

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates are nine touchdowns away from surpassing San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young and WR Jerry Rice for touchdown connections. They would then only trail former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison for most touchdowns between a quarterback and pass-catcher in a career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers is a borderline QB1/QB2 while Gates is a solid TE2 for sure. That Gates is still playing at his age is insane, and we expect another solid year from him in 2016.

DEN - OLB Von Miller in great shape

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller said he hasn't been in as good of shape he's in since coming out of college. 'My conditioning, running to the ball and running here doing the conditioning in the weight room, it's never been like that,' Miller said. Miller added that he's found the perfect blend of size and strength without compromising his elite speed on the edge. The Super Bowl MVP did admit that he's lacking mentally, though. Miller said every day at practice he remembers something new that he used to do. 'I'm not there yet [mentally].' He does expect to be ready from a mental standpoint by next week, though.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's great to hear as the Denver defense is going to have to carry a big load again this season, and Miller will be a vital part of it. We expect the defense to regress a little bit—it's impossible to keep up an historic level of play two years in a row—but remain one of the better defenses in the NFL anyway. After all even half of historic is pretty darn good.

SEA - RB Christine Michael has chance to start

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - John Clayton

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael has been working with the first-team offense since training camp started and has a legitimate chance to win the starting running back job. RBs Thomas Rawls and Alex Collins are also candidates for the starting job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls is the favorite here, but he's still healing from a knee injury. The team won't rush him back, but if Michael looks good this preseason, he might cut into his carries. By himself, Rawls is a great RB2, but if he starts splitting carries, it's going to ruin the value of every back in the backfield. Right now we still rank it as Rawls, then Michael, then the rookie Collins. We'll keep you posted if it changes, because if one guy gets the bulk of the carries, his fantasy production will be great.

MIN - WR Adam Thielen working with starters

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen is receiving most of the first-team snaps when the team is lined up in three-receiver sets alongside WRs Charles Johnson and Stefon Diggs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've got a Thielen he has the inside track for the No. 3 job over Jarius Wright, who had no touchdowns at all last season. The thing is, he did this last summer as well and ended up with little to do in the regular season. Watch to see who ends up winning the third job here, but remember that this will probably remain Adrian Peterson's offense, with little passing. That means the bulk of the few targets will go to Diggs and Johnson and Thielen will be unreliable.

BUF - WR Marquise Goodwin may be No. 3 WR

    Source: WKBW.com

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin has a solid chance to win the No. 3 receiver job this season because he has performed better than the other candidates for the job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not exactly high praise. Outperforming a mediocre group of guys isn't anything we'd find ourselves commending you for. Add to that he's a third wheel in a passing offense which will already be hampered by a focus on the run, we'd avoid him.

NE - QB Jimmy Garoppolo fairly accurate

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is 158-for-231 (68.3%) with six interceptions in team drills through 12 practices. QB Tom Brady is 155-for-213 (72.7%) with four interceptions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, you'd like to see fewer interceptions in drills, but the completion percentage is hopeful. We see Garoppolo as a decent fill in or QB2 with upside in Weeks 2 through 4, but would avoid him against the tough Arizona defense in Week 1.

SD - WR Isaiah Burse not seizing chance

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Isaiah Burse had been seeing time in the slot with WR Stevie Johnson (knee) sidelined, but the first-team reps have faded in recent practices, according to beat writer Michael Gehlken.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burse is going to see time continue to decline, especially as Tyrell Williams continues to ascend. If anything, we see Williams as the third receiver, occasionally moving Keenan Allen to the slot.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah hasn't missed a practice

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) has participated in every one of the team's practices since camp opened. However, he's done so in a red no-contact jersey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah is getting the bubble wrap treatment, as more than one Lions writer has said that he'll get a chance to break out this year. He will still be limited by a three-headed backfield, but if Abdullah can start making more big plays, he'll be a boom/bust RB2 and worth the seventh-round pick it will take to land him.

DET - TE Eric Ebron expected to sit Friday

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) is expected to sit the team's preseason opener Friday, August 12, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ebron hasn't practiced since suffering the injury in a mock game Saturday, August 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ebron's injury is still a bit of a mystery, but from all outward indications, he should be ready for Week 1, if not before that. He's worth a pick an upside low TE1 or high TE2.

    Saturday Update

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor lands big deal Source: The Buffalo News - Tim Graham

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor has agreed to terms on six-year, $90 million contract extension. The deal has unspecified team options and could be worth more through incentives and also gives the team some options if Taylor doesn't perform.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor was in the final year of his contract, and he was clearly in line for a raise after his play last year. The Bills have paid him and now the pressure will be on for him to perform, grow and develop. Taylor has electric athleticism and a good pass placement on deep throws. The Bills won't go to the air that often, but when they do expect Taylor to be peppering WR Sammy Watkins with targets. We like Taylor as a QB2 with upside because of his rushing ability.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz downplays injury

    Source: NJ.com - James Kratch

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) said he is not worried about the groin injury which caused him to miss practice Wednesday, Aug. 10, and is taking it slow to prevent the injury from becoming a bigger issue.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Odell Beckham Jr. is the top dog here, and Sterling Shepard is going to push Cruz as well so he might not be worried but we think he could struggle to regain his spot as even a No.2. Especially since we don't know what he will look like healthy after such a long layoff and a serious injury. Our rankings reflect this as Beckham is a natural WR1, Shepard hovers at WR5 while Cruz is largely unranked by our staff and the few who have him ranked have him as a WR8.

BUF - RB Reggie Bush expected to sit

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB Reggie Bush is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, Aug. 13.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bush is primarily going to be a return man for the Bills. The veteran doesn't need a ton of reps in the preseason, and we may not see much of him before the start of the regular season. Even when the games count, we're not expecting a fantasy-relevant role for Bush in 2016.

CIN - WR Tyler Boyd impressing coaches

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey
Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd has been performing very well during training camp and has exceeded head coach Marvin Lewis' expectations. 'He's really entered training camp and come back and worked and done the things we expected him to do and be able to do. He's taken it and he's grasped it and ran with it,' Lewis said. Boyd likely will be the No. 3 receiver this season because of his ability to play on the outside and in the slot.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The second-round pick was an impressive player in college at PITT. Boyd reminds some in the scouting community of Keenan Allen (Chargers) because of his body control and ability to make difficult catches seem routine. The Bengls WR corps is thin after losing both Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency. If Boyd can have a semi-breakout this year, it would greatly benefit the Bengals passing game.

    BAL - Keenan Reynolds struggling

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Keenan Reynolds has been dropping passes and punts on a daily basis during training camp and likely will need a strong preseason to make the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reynolds, a converted QB from Navy, is a fine athlete but he's learning how to play WR and needs to be more consistent.

BAL - RB Kenneth Dixon performing well

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon has produced explosive plays in the running and passing game during training camp but is still behind RBs Justin Forsett, Javorius Allen and Terrance West on the depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Dixon is an exciting rookie RB because of his quickness and explosiveness. He's in the mix on the depth chart, and he may not be able to overtake Forsett as the lead back. Forsett is the starter, but make sure to keep Dixon on the waiver wire speed dial (or add him as a late-round pick) if you invest in Baltimore's backfield.

JAX - Coach happy with WR Marqise Lee's play

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Hays Carlyon

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said he is happy with how WR Marqise Lee played during the first preseason game. 'It was really good to see,' Bradley said. 'He appeared to play really fast and made a play there, a couple plays. His speed, like we said, we've just got to continue now with him.' Lee finished the game with four receptions for 49 yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's been awhile since Lee has looked good on the football field. We'll see if he can recapture some of the momentum he had in college at USC and translate that to the football field. Lee is competing with Rashad Greene for the no.3 job behind Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick limited Friday

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) was limited during practice Friday, Aug. 12, because of a sore shoulder. He was expected to share first-team snaps with QB Blaine Gabbert during the first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 14, but the injury may change things.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert is the leader because Kaepernick missed the offseason since he was recovering from three offseason surgeries. Kaepernick will have a shot to prove himself, but he can't suffer any setbacks like a sore shoulder if he wants to do that.

PHI - WR Rueben Randle's 'embarrassing' effort Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles WR Rueben Randle's performance in Philadelphia's first preseason game, Thursday, Aug. 11, was described as an 'embarrassment' by PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski. He noted Randle's poor route-running and blocking efforts. Kempski said, 'QBs can't possibly want him on the field.' Randle played 28 offensive snaps, hauling in one of his three targets for just three yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Has he not seen Randle before? Randle is a player who has always struggled dating back to his college career at LSU. His change of scenery this offseason isn't going to change who he is. The former Giants WR was a disappointment in New York and we're not predicting that to all of a sudden change because he's now in Philadelphia.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz pegged as No. 3

    Source: ESPN.com - Phil Sheridan

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz has displayed excellent arm strength, good mobility and a high football IQ so far, but the team is committed to him opening the season as the No. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. We love Wentz's future potential, but right now he's going to sit and learn behind starter Sam Bradford and backup Chase Daniel.

LA - TE Tyler Higbee carving bigger role

    Source: ESPN.com - Steve Dilbeck

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has been the biggest surprise in training camp, and he appears headed for serious playing time. Higbee makes a play every day, is a big target and has good hands.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This wasn't a great TE class, but Higbee was one of the best in this draft class. He's a good athlete who creates mismatches on the field as he's too fast for LBs to cover and too big for DBs to cover down the seam. Dynasty owners should have already added him, while re-draft owners need to keep him on the waiver wire speed dial.

WAS - Jay Gruden calls out Redskins RBs

    Source: CSNMidAtlantic.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones was among a committee of running backs that averaged 3.1 yards per carry in the first preseason game, and head coach Jay Gruden called them out after the game. 'We're going to keep sticking with it,' Gruden said. 'We've got to fix it. There's no excuse, we have to run the ball better.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to take note here as there are plenty of questions about what starting RB Matt Jones can be in 2016. Jones has a current ADP of RB23 (5.06) in 12-team PPR leagues, but on Thursday he rushed for one yard on two carries. We're not going to panic, but obviously fantasy owners would like to see more. Thursday night, undrafted RB Robert Kelley looked the best with seven carries for 40 yards and one rushing touchdown.

NYJ - QB Christian Hackenberg doesn't play

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg didn't play in the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hackenberg was drafted in the second round this year to be the team's QB of the future, but he's been struggling in practice with inconsistent play. The Jets decided to give second-year pro Bryce Petty playing time instead of the rookie. While Hackenberg could be a starter for the Jets in the future, we don't think Petty makes the team this year. If the Jets are able to deal Geno Smith, then perhaps Petty would make it but we can't imagine anyone that interested in adding Smith.

DEN - WR Cody Latimer busy Thursday
    Source: The Associated Press

Denver Broncos WR Cody Latimer had seven catches on eight targets for a game-high 82 yards in a 22-0 win over the Chicago Bears in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Latimer doesn't lack talent, but with only eight catches over the last two years it's time for him to play up to his potential. The Broncos aren't going to use 3-WR sets that much in the run-heavy Gary Kubiak system. We just don't see Latimer doing much this year unless Demaryius Thomas or Emmanuel Sanders gets banged up. Dynasty owners should scoop up Latimer for a low price right now and wait to see if he can flourish...with the Broncos are another team.

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez efficient in win

    Source: The Associated Press

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez completed 10 of his 13 passes for 99 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 22-0 win over the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez looked great on the team's first drive, but the interception was classic him. He stared down Bennie Fowler and allowed the CB covering Cody Latimer to drift back and tip up the ball in coverage. The Bears picked it off and Sanchez's night was done. He still hasn't distanced himself in the competition at QB, and we expect Trevor Siemian to start next week against the 49ers.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian throws for 88 yards

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian was 7-for-12 for 88 yards in the second quarter of the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 11. Siemian had a chance to complete a touchdown pass lobbed well to WR Bennie Fowler's back shoulder, but Fowler couldn't haul the pass in. Siemian is expected to start the second preseason game, Aug. 20, against the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siemian could have had a better night, but it wasn't a bad performance by any means. He's been better than Mark Sanchez most days in training camp, and we expect he'll start the team's second preseason game against the 49ers.

New England Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney had nine carries for a game-high 64 yards and a touchdown and added two catches for seven yards in a 34-22 win over the New Orleans Saints in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gaffney is a powerful and swift back who can run through arm tackles with ease. He's been getting some work with the first-team offense in practice, and Gaffney is a power back trying to find a role behind LeGarrette Blount.

NO - WR Michael Thomas makes strong debut

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas had four catches for a game-high 67 yards in a 34-22 loss to the New England Patriots in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas looked really good in Thursday's game, making several nice grabs and leading the team in catches and yards. His route running and competitiveness should serve him well and will endear him to Drew Brees. We have Thomas ranked as a WR5 right now, but when he jumps up the roster - and he will - that ranking should rise.

ATL - WR Aldrick Robinson makes big plays

    Source: The Associated Press

Atlanta Falcons WR Aldrick Robinson had three catches for 118 yards in a 23-17 win over the Washington Redskins Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Outside of Julio Jones, he doesn't exactly have Hall of Famers in front of him, so Robinson could have a role. We need to see more before we get too excited though and he will have to overcome Mohamed Sanu to get significant time.

PHI - Shaky debut for QB Carson Wentz

    Source: The Associated Press

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz completed 12 of his 24 passes for 89 yards and an interception in the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz also got banged around a fair bit in the backfield, though he wasn't sacked. It's hard to get too down on what was, admittedly, a poor performance as he was working with backups, third stringers and guys who will never see a snap in a proper NFL game. That said, we knew he had a lot of work to do, and the Eagles expected they would need patience. He's not worth a redraft pick, but we think he is a solid pick in the mid-to-late second round of a rookie draft.

NE - Quiet outing for QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 11 of his 18 passes for 168 yards in the first half of the preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints Thursday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Garoppolo finished off his night completing six of his last eight passes, which is where he accumulated most of his 168 yards. He was nearly picked off and 56 yards of his total came off a single screen pass, so the numbers don't quite tell the whole story. Garoppolo didn't have Julian Edelman or Rob Gronkowski, so his evening, while shaky, was actually not bad. He appears to be a shaky, but decent fill in for Brady during the first month of the season, though we would avoid him in Week 1 at Arizona.

OAK - TE Clive Walford to have big role?

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders TE Clive Walford said he is more comfortable in the offense this year, and offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said Walford is going to be a 'big part' of what the Raiders do on offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last year was a decent rookie season for Walford and we expect him to build on it this season. He may rank behind Lee Smith right now but that is bound to change sooner than later. While we see him as a TE2/TE3, he has some real upside this season.

    Sunday Update

PHI - QB Carson Wentz has fractured rib Source: Newsday - Bob Glauber

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (ribs) has a hairline rib fracture.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the rookie here. He struggled in the preseason opener and now will be put on the shelf for a month or so. The Eagles hope to have him back before the preseason concludes.

GB - WR Jeff Janis has fractured hand

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) may miss significant time because at least one of the bones in his hand is fractured, according a source. Janis suffered the injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 10, and did not play in the first preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the young WR here. Janis was competing for the no.3 spot on the depth chart behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. We'll know more about his recovery time in the future, but now the job behind those top two will go to someone like Ty Montgomery, Jared Abbrederis or Davante Adams.

SF - QB Blaine Gabbert likely to start Sunday

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert appears likely to start the team's preseason opener against the Sunday, Aug. 14, although head coach Chip Kelly hasn't made an official announcement. QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) did not practice Friday, Aug. 12, and his status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprises here. Kaepernick fell behind in this competition as he missed all of the offseason while recovering from three different surgeries. He'll need to stay healthy and outperform Gabbert if he wants a shot at the top job.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz may practice Sunday

    Source: NJ.com - James Kratch

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) has a chance to participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 14, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No hurries, no worries with Cruz. He's in the line to be the team's no.3 WR if healthy. Cruz missed the first preseason game because of a groin injury.

CLE - RB Isaiah Crowell expected to be fine

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell (shoulder) underwent a X-ray on the shoulder injury he suffered in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 12, but head coach Hue Jackson said it does not appear to be a long-term injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crowell is a powerful runner who uses his pad level to blast through defenders. A shoulder injury could slow him down for a bit. The injury isn't believed to be serious, so fantasy owners should be fine drafting him at his current ADP of RB44 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

OAK - George Atkinson has terrific performance

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Gutierrez

Oakland Raiders RB George Atkinson III rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns on five carries in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Deep breath and remember it's Week 1 of Preseason. But still, pay attention. Undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2014, Atkinson has a good size/speed combination. Measuring in at 6'1" 220 pounds, Atkinson can carry a large workload if called upon. A former track star, Atkinson has been clocked below 10.4 seconds in the 100 meter dash. He's played RB, WR and cornerback through his football career and is growing into the position of RB in the NFL. Atkinson is a one-cut runner who certainly has the attention of dynasty owners. He's trying to win the backup job to starter Latavius Murray in 2016.

NYG - Minor injury for WR Sterling Shepard

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard's (groin) groin injury isn't serious, head coach Ben McAdoo said Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will be cautious with the rookie. Shepard is a favorite of ours, and he's got the upside to be a fine no.2 WR for the Giants this year opposite superstar Odell Beckham Jr. Shepard is quick, fast and agile which makes him tough to bring down in the open field. Fantasy owners should consider the rookie a WR4 with upside.

CLE - X-rays negative for WR Terrelle Pryor

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor's (hand) X-rays on his left hand were negative, and he said his hand feels fine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pryor can't afford for an injury to knock him out. He's trying to make the 53-man roster on a team that is loaded at the WR position.

MIA - Quiet night for RB Jay Ajayi

    Source: ESPN.com

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi had two carries for six yards and was unable to catch either of his targets in a 27-10 preseason win over the New York Giants Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins did everything they could to find more RB help this offseason. While they missed out on some backs, they did sign veteran RB Arian Foster. If healthy, we see Foster as the starter and the more fantasy relevant player. Ajayi needs to impress if he wants to see the field.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates can’t hold on to ball

    Source: The Associated Press

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates had three catches for 18 yards but dropped a pass and fumbled twice in a 30-17 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates has butterfingers...and he has for quite some time. He's incredibly gifted athletically, but Coates has a problem with concentration, drops and now fumbles. The second-year pro is trying to win the no.2 WR job opposite Antonio Brown. He's in the mix for the no.3 job if someone like Markus Wheaton ends up as their WR2.

CHI - TE Zach Miller back at practice

Source: Chicago Tribune - Rich Campbell

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (concussion) returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 13, for the first time since July 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is set to be the team's lead TE in 2016. If healthy, we think he's a low-end TE2 for fantasy owners.

DET - RB Zach Zenner draws head coach's praise

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner finished with 24 yards rushing and three catches for another 32 yards in the team's preseason-opening win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, Aug. 12, continuing to build on the momentum he started last year when he led the NFL in rushing over the 2015 preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zenner is a powerful player who can make his living between the tackles. He seems to be the frontrunner to be the team's power back behind starter Ameer Abdullah.

SEA - RB Christine Michael shines in opener

    Source: ESPN.com

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael continued to build upon what has been a solid camp in preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 13, drawing the start and rushing for 44 yards on seven carries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The talent has always been there with Michael. He bounced around the league last year and may have finally 'got it' after almost being out of football. Thomas Rawls is set to start, but he's not healthy yet so keep your eyes on this situation.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas not practicing

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (knee) is not participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 13.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas can be a stud fantasy TE, but he's never played a full 16-game season in his pro career. We hope he can this year, but there always seems to be some nagging injury slowing him down. Fantasy owners know that if they draft Thomas he'll be a solid starter when healthy...but he's likely to miss a couple of games.

DET - RB Stevan Ridley did not receive much time

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions RB Stevan Ridley did not see playing time until the second half of the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, Aug. 12, and finished the game with 14 yards on five carries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ridley is competing with Zach Zenner for the power back job behind starter Ameer Abdullah. The veteran seems to be behind in that competition at this point, and he's certainly no lock for the 53-man roster.

    23. CLE - QB Robert Griffin III fails to impress

    Source: The Associated Press

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III completed four of his eight pass attempts for 67 yards and an interception in a 17-11 preseason loss to the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin has already been named the starter, and he should have performed better in his first preseason game. We don't think the team goes back on their "you're the no.1 QB" statement, but Josh McCown may be called upon at some point during the year if Griffin doesn't show better in the regular season.
