NFL Player News - Week of July 20th

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

NE - QB Tom Brady ruling coming this week?

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Updating previous reports, the camp for New England Patriots QB Tom Brady believes an appeal decision could come this week, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Brady appealed a four-game suspension ruling for his involvement in deflating footballs last postseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He currently sits with a four-game suspension, but many people are expecting a reduction. If there's no elimination of the suspension, then expect Brady's legal team to get further involved with litigation.

CAR - QB Cam Newton a force on the ground

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's 33 rushing touchdowns over the last four years are the most by any quarterback during that span.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton is continuing to develop as a passer, but he's known as a fantasy force because of what he can do on the ground. The Panthers put better weapons around Newton this offseason, so the Carolina passing attack should be more potent in 2015. Newton should be a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners each week.

NO - TE Jermaine Gresham has offer from NO

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) was offered a contract by the New Orleans Saints after visiting in June. He has other visits planned over the next two weeks and is expected to decide on a team before training camp begins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if the veteran tight end accepts. The Saints have always seemed like the frontrunner for Gresham's services. If signed, this would lower the value (and the sleeper status) of Josh Hill. Stay tuned.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon picking up offense

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon has picked up the offense at a fast rate this offseason, according to running backs coach Kelly Skipper. 'The impressive thing about T.J. is that he picked up the offense quickly,' Skipper said. 'For the most part, when he gets something, he has it [down] and we can move onto the next thing.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited about the rookie running back from Alabama this year. Yeldon is a big back, but he's not your traditional power back. He does run with some build-up power when he gets a head of steam, but Yeldon is a bit niftier as a runner than most men his size. He'll be the lead back for the Jaguars this year and could be a nice RB3 with RB2 upside for fantasy owners.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson the best at big plays?
    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks
Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson has 48 catches of 40-plus yards over seven seasons, and he led the NFL with 13 such catches in 2014.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is a fantastic deep threat who can fly down the field and get by defenders while tracking the pass over his shoulder. In Washington's offense, Jackson has the potential to finish as a top-20 fantasy receiver. Right now, Jackson has an ADP of WR28 (6.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Tuesday Update

TEN - WR Justin Hunter arrested

    Source: WTKR.com - Doris Taylor

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter was arrested Monday, July 20, and has been charged with assault because of an incident earlier this month. Hunter was allegedly involved in a fight at a bar in Virginia Beach that sent a person to the hospital.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunter turned himself in to authorities after a warrant was put out for his arrest. He's a talented-but-underachieving player, and this type of incident could be what breaks the camel's back for the Titans. Don't be surprised if the team sends him packing. Hunter is due to be arraigned on Tuesday.

NO - New Orleans TE committee likely

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill and TE Benjamin Watson will likely be used in a committee to supplement the team's offense after TE Jimmy Graham was traded.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No matter who is the starter, they won't see as many targets as Jimmy Graham did during his time in New Orleans. We have an appreciation for the Idaho State product, and Hill has proven in limited time that he can make some big plays (and catch touchdowns) here and there. Hill should get every opportunity to prove himself in a larger role this year, but TEBC isn't something fantasy owners should be getting themselves involved in. Let's see how things shake out in training camp and the preseason.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson to catch more passes?

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could end up catching between 40 and 50 passes in 2015, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Ben Goessling.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson had a career-high of 43 receptions back in 2009, and he could put up similar numbers this year. The Vikings are wise to use Peterson as much as possible this year. That's why taking him in the first five picks of fantasy drafts is what most league owners are doing in 2015.

NO - WR Marques Colston could be used in red zone

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston could be used as a red zone target more than in recent years, and he should remain heavily involved in the offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well Colston has never been a guy to stretch the field, so using him in the red zone (where he can use his size and strength) is the best idea. With guys like Kenny Stills (Dolphins) and Jimmy Graham (Seahawks) gone, Colston might see an uptick in red-zone targets in 2015. He's a WR4 for most fantasy owners this year.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford plans to play out deal

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford plans to play out the final year of his contract and will not sign a contract extension at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford's contract is one we won't see in the NFL ever again. His rookie deal (with $50 million guaranteed) was put in place before the rookie salary cap. Now, rookie quarterbacks end up with much less guaranteed money. Bradford may end up retiring if he can't stay healthy this year. Multiple knee injuries have derailed his time in the NFL. He's got a $12.9 million cap number this year and is hoping that a fresh start with the Eagles may jump-start his career.

DEN - Coach excited about WR Cody Latimer

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos WR Cody Latimer showed improvement during offseason workouts while working with the starting offense, and head coach Gary Kubiak is excited about Latimer will add to the offense. 'I’m really excited about what he can bring and I know he’s a lot better now than when he started,' Kubiak said. 'I’m excited moving forward.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dynasty owners should be excited by Latimer, and re-draft owners should consider him a late-round flier in deeper drafts. Latimer didn't do much as a rookie, but incredible natural talent is there. He's a big receiver who can play above the rim, and Latimer makes difficult catches seem routine. Latimer will play on the outside opposite Demaryius Thomas when the team utilizes three-wide receiver sets.

OAK - WR Amari Cooper wants to work with QB

Source: The Oakland Tribune - Jerry McDonald

Oakland Raiders rookie WR Amari Cooper said he wants to individually catch passes with QB Derek Carr three more times before the start of training camp, according to Carr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper has superstar upside, and Carr has flashed potential in the pros. The Raiders are unlikely to be playoff bound this year, but adding guys like Cooper is a step in the right direction. Fantasy owners should be excited about the rookie wide receiver. He's explosive, a fine route-runner and Cooper can take short passes and turn them into long gains. His current ADP is WR22 (5.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

HOU - OLB Jadeveon Clowney could start Week 1

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is continuing his rehabilitation process but could be healthy enough in time to play the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even if Clowney starts in Week 1 against the Chiefs, we could see him playing more of a part-time role. Coming back from microfracture surgery, Clowney is going to be eased back into the lineup.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy not setting goals

    Source: AL.com - Mark Inabinett

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy said he doesn't set personal goals. Lacy said he focuses on whatever it takes to put the team in a position to win.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy may not project stats for himself, but we do. Fantasy owners should be excited by assets on the Packers roster. Lacy has the ability to finish as a top-5 fantasy running back this season. His current ADP is RB4 (1.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ARI - AZ hosting TE Jermaine Gresham

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Cardinals) will visit the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, July 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals (and the Saints) seem to be the most interested in Gresham right now. The veteran tight end is currently recovering from back surgery he underwent earlier this offseason. We'll see him find a spot on a roster before the start of the regular season...maybe before the start of training camp. If he lands in Arizona, Gresham won't be much of a fantasy factor as Bruce Arians doesn't use his tight ends that often.

SD - Stevie Johnson to play outside, in slot

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson will be used on the outside as well as in the slot this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is a sleeper for fantasy owners to pick up late in their drafts. He failed to impress during his time with the 49ers, but we think that has more to do with QB Colin Kaepernick. With Eddie Royal moving on to the Bears, Johnson will take over as the Chargers second-best wide receiver behind Keenan Allen. Johnson has a current ADP of WR59 (13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYG - RB Shane Vereen will pass protect

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen is expected to help the Giants' passing game by protecting the quarterback in addition to catching the ball.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vereen has the capability of catching 50 or more passes this year for the Giants. He's an explosive player with the ball in his hands, and Vereen can make defenders miss in space. In PPR leagues, Vereen may be able to finish the season as a top-30 fantasy running back. He's a weekly option to start as a flex in PPR leagues because of his receiving ability.

BAL - WR Reggie Wayne not an option for Ravens

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) is not expected to be pursued by the Baltimore Ravens since the team does not see wide receiver as a pressing need.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wayne wants to play for a Super Bowl contender, and Baltimore certainly fits the bill. It seems like they're content rolling forward with young guys like Breshad Perriman, Kamar Aiken and Marlon Brown behind seasoned veteran Steven Smith.

HOU - Houston not interested in WR Reggie Wayne

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Updating an earlier report, free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) isn't of interest to the Houston Texans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well if Wayne wants to play for a Super Bowl contender this year, he's best to avoid Houston. The Texans have a strong defense and a quality rushing attack, but their QB situation leaves a lot to be desired.

SD - QB Philip Rivers not rushing a deal

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has shown little urgency in signing an extension with the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have a feeling something will get done with Rivers when the time is right. The Chargers didn't add a quarterback in the draft, and Rivers should still have a few years left at a high level. After some pre-draft rumblings about Rivers getting dealt, it seems like there's more optimism around San Diego. Stay tuned.

    Wednesday Update

NE - No timetable for QB Tom Brady's appeal
Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal on his four-game suspension does not have a specified timeline, according to commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell said the league is being thorough with the appeal process, adding that a decision will be made as quickly as possible.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
As quickly as possible? Yeah right. Fantasy owners want to know if Brady is going to get popped for four games, or if he's going to be ready for the season opener. If Brady has any games remaining on his suspension expect more legal action from his camp.

DET - RB Joique Bell's health a big concern?

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell's health will be a concern until the Lions see him back on the field, according to offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to have rookie Ameer Abdullah on the radar. Right now, Abdullah is coming off the board at RB28 while Bell is coming off at RB27 in 12-team PPR leagues. Bell suffered Achilles' and knee injuries last season, but still managed nearly 1,200 total yards and eight total touchdowns. Watch Bell's status in training camp to determine his level of play by the time the regular season gets here.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant could be limited in camp

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant could see a decreased amount of snaps during training camp this year in an attempt to preserve his good health. According to executive vice president Stephen Jones, it will be important for Bryant and the Cowboys for him not to be 'thrown to the wolves' right away.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not shocked by this. Bryant missed out on OTAs and minicamp, so it makes sense for the Cowboys to ease him back into action. He'll be ready to rock in plenty of time for the regular season opener.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson restructures

    Source: Vikings.com

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has agreed to restructure his contract Tuesday, July 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson was due a non-guaranteed $44.75 million over the next three years before the team restructured his deal. He'll now make a guaranteed salary of $11 million this season, and Peterson gets a $2 million roster bonus paid on July 28th. Next year, Peterson has a base salary of $7.75 million. Also on the third day of the league year, Peterson earns a $5 million roster bonus.

TEN - WR Justin Hunter charged with felony

Source: WKRN-TV Nashville - Audra Martin

Updating an earlier report, Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter has been charged with one count of felonious assault. According to the jail report, the charges are 'malicious intent, stabbing, cutting, wounding.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunter was already a player who might have been on the roster bubble after two disappointing seasons in the pros. The Titans may just wash their hands of him after these charges have come to light.

NYG - QB Eli Manning extension sought after

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New York Giants QB Eli Manning could have an extension signed by the team before or early in training camp. Manning is set to make $17 million and count $19.25 million against the cap this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning is entering the final year of his contract, so the two sides will work to come together on an extension to keep him around with the Giants. Earlier this year, Ben Roethlisberger signed a five-year $99 million extension with the Steelers, and we could see Manning get something in that range. At age 34, Manning could post carer-best numbers in year two working under offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta to open on PUP

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) is expected to open the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to sources. This would mean he'll miss at least the first six games. He has rehabilitated the hip to the point where he's able to do some route running and individual drills, but wasn't allowed to fully participate during the Ravens' offseason practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pitta's career may be done, and starting the season--not training camp, the season--on PUP shows just how serious this injury is. We're not surprised by this move as it was always expected, and that's why the Ravens moved to add tight end talent this year. In the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, they added Maxx Williams from Minnesota. He reminds us of a young Jason Witten (Cowboys), and the rookie will compete with second-year pro Crockett Gillmore for the starting tight end position in 2015.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota agrees to deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Tennessee Titans rookie QB Marcus Mariota agreed to terms on his rookie contract Tuesday, July 21. Terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota is the last of the first-round picks to sign. He won't miss any training camp with his first contract in hand. That's important for Mariota since he has so much to learn. We like his raw natural talent, but Mariota will have to prove that he can excel as a passer from the pocket. After working out of the shotgun for almost every snap of his college career at Oregon, Mariota has to prove that he can work from under center effectively. The talent is there, but there's a lot of room for improvement.

NE - NE RBs in close battle

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots RBs James White, Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis aren't far apart in the battle to take over the pass-catching role vacated by New York Giants RB Shane Vereen, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a lot to like about each one of these players. We're excited to see what White can do with a larger role this year. The second-year back from Wisconsin is a determined runner, and he can make plays in open space. Both Cadet and Lewis could be fine change-of-pace backs as well.

PIT - RB LeVeon Bell appeal not heard yet

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's supposed appeal for his three-game suspension has not been brought to the attention of commissioner Roger Goodell. Bell was suspended for possession of marijuana and driving under the influence.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have a feeling that Bell could see his sentence reduced by a game or two. Fantasy owners should still be taking Bell in the first five picks on any fantasy draft--even if his suspension stands at three games.

MIN - MIN has no interest in Evan Mathis

    Source: KSTP-TV - Darren Wolfson

Free-agent OG Evan Mathis (Eagles) isn't of interest to the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings want to see what they have in their young guys but could become interested if issues arise.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathis is a talented player, but he's going to come with a larger price tag than some organizations will want to play. Reports indicate he's getting interest from several teams, and we should see him signed to a new team at some point before or near the start of training camp.

STL - RB Todd Gurley to open camp on NFI
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is expected to be placed on the Non-Football Injury list when training camp opens. This was the team's plan, and he can be removed from it at any time.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This move was expected for the rookie first-round pick. Gurley is incredibly talented and can be a top-5 fantasy running back when healthy and playing up to his potential. He's still recovering from a knee injury he suffered last year at Georgia, so the Rams are going to ease him back into action as we draw closer to the regular season.

DEN - Fewer targets for WR Emmanuel Sanders?

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders had a breakout season and Pro Bowl appearance in 2014, but with a tweaked offense under head coach Gary Kubiak the receiver might see fewer passes thrown his way.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should be dialed into this story. Sanders admitted earlier this year that he'll likely see fewer targets and receptions in 2015, but he's aiming to surpass 1,000 receiving yards again. We feel in the Kubiak offense Sanders could post 75 catches for around 1,000 yards with 5-7 touchdowns on the year. Kubiak will utilize the tight end position more in addition to emphasizing the running game more than the team did under John Fox. This change in philosophy will alter the numbers for Sanders.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas catching up

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas is signed to his five-year deal, but he missed all of the offseason workouts and organized team activities (OTAs), so it will take a bit of time before he is up to speed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can't imagine things will take that long for Thomas. He'll be there for the opening day of training camp, and we'd guess by two weeks in Thomas will be up to speed. Gary Kubiak has said the wide receivers have the most to learn because of the terminology.

League needs to have their appeal rulings done in a far more timely manner. Brady will miss zero games due to suspension this season regardless of Goodell's slow ruling.

Good point. If Brady appeals, the suspension gets pushed back regardless, right?

Funny I said this a couple of days ago. Just saw on the ESPN QB tier ranking that another NFL Coach said the same exact thing I did. I wish it wasn't true, but I think he will be hanging out with Vince Young in two years.

if he doesn't show anything this season you may be right. 2nd chances for qb's are hard to come by.

If a QB can play and wants to play, he will get unlimited chances. Look at Vick, he could still be in the NFL if he showed much of anything last year with the NYJ and he's a PR time bomb. There just isn't enough QBs to go around when guys like Kyle Orton get begged to come out of retirement. How many QBs got a call from the Cards last year? I wouldn't be shocked if Kurt Warner or Brett Favre got a call. There's just nobody out there. If RG3 has anything left whatsoever, he'll get a shot somewhere.

    Thursday Update

NYG - Odell Beckham feeling better

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) said his hamstring is feeling a lot better than it did earlier this offseason. Beckham missed some of the offseason workouts because of a hamstring problem.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants know they'll have to be careful with their superstar. Beckham missed the first month of his rookie season last year due to hamstring problems. Entering this season, the Giants can't afford to have Beckham in the sidelines.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford plans to play at camp

    Source: FOX Sports

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford (knee) is expected to be ready to participate once training camp begins. Bradford has been rehabilitating his knee after suffering a second anterior cruciate ligament tear in as many years.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford may be ready, but the team would be wise to ease him back after two ACL injuries. Mark Sanchez could get plenty of first-team reps for the Eagles while Bradford is eased into action.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert ready for breakout?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert could be primed for a breakout season, in the opinion of Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals have been waiting for Eifert to break out, and he's certainly a player fantasy owners should be watching. After missing most of last season, Eifert is looking to build off the numbers he had as a rookie in 2013. Right now, fantasy owners are picking up Eifert as a TE2 with TE1 upside. His current ADP is TE17 (13.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TEN - RB Bishop Sankey likely to start

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey is the odds-on favorite to start in Week 1 because he has a year of experience and a full offseason under his belt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sankey had a disappointing rookie season, but the Titans look like they'll give him another chance to prove himself as the lead back. However, they did draft both RB David Cobb and FB Jalston Fowler in the 2015 NFL draft. If (when?) Sankey struggles, we could see Cobb take over with Fowler blasting open holes in front of him.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills to be No. 4 WR?

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Chris Perkins

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills could play behind WRs Jarvis Landry, Greg Jennings and rookie DeVante Parker this season, according to Chris Perkins of the Sun-Sentinel.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stills could be the deep receiver that Mike Wallace never was for the Dolphins. Now, that role is going to come in a part-time capacity this year. We're excited about this passing game, and rookie DeVante Parker could develop into a top-20 talent in the NFL...but that might come at a later date.

HOU - OLB Jadeveon Clowney looking good

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) looks spectacular, according to a team doctor. Clowney is seven months removed from microfracture surgery on his knee. It was previously reported that Clowney will probably be brought along slowly in training camp and could end up being ready for the regular season opener.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He may look spectacular according to the team doctor, but that shouldn't change the team's approach with the second-year pass-rusher. We'll see if Clowney can start getting after the quarterback this season after his rookie season was a bust.

DEN - TE Virgil Green expected to see more targets

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green is expected to receive more playing time this season and receive more targets than he has had in the past.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green should post career-best numbers this year, but that's an easy prediction since Green only has 23 catches in his four-year career. He's an underrated receiver, but Green is a fantastic blocker. With so many question marks on the offensive line, Green may stay in to block more than those calling him a "sleeper fantasy tight end" would think.

WAS - Not interested in WR Santana Moss

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Free-agent WR Santana Moss (Redskins) is not a player the Washington Redskins are interested in re-signing at this time. The team could pursue him if one of their veteran wide receivers suffers an injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After catching 42 passes in 2013, Moss only hauled in 10 grabs last year. He's not the same player he used to be, but there might be some team interested in adding him as veteran depth.

NYJ - TE Jace Amaro not used in red zone in 2014

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro was targeted only nine times in the red zone last season. Amaro could be used more often in the red zone under offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be a smart move for the Jets to use Amaro more when they're near pay dirt. Amaro has good size and the wingspan to pluck jump passes out of the air. He's a TE2 with upside for fantasy owners this year.

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham meets with Arizona

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (back) met with the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, July 21, but the two sides have not agreed to a deal at this point. Gresham underwent back surgery earlier this offseason, and it is not known if the Cardinals' doctors were comfortable with his health. Gresham may decide to meet with other teams before making a decision.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Earlier reports indicated the Saints had an offer on the table for the veteran tight end. Gresham had back surgery back in March, and he may not be as healthy as some teams want in order to bring him on board. We'll see some team add him...perhaps before the start of training camp.

TEN - RB David Cobb missed time this offseason

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb (hamstring) missed much of the offseason with a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Cobb's power and determination as a runner. He's currently behind Bishop Sankey on the depth chart, but that could change if Cobb is healthy and impressive in camp. The rookie is unlikely to be a superstar in this league, but he could be a solid starter for the Titans.

TEN - WR Justin Hunter to take part in camp

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter is expected to take part in training camp when it opens, as the team will let the legal process play out, according to a source. Hunter was arrested earlier in the month of felony assault.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is an interesting move by the Titans. It looks like they're going to let the legal process work things out. Hunter has been a disappointment for two years in the pros, and this could be a make-or-break season for him with the Titans--even without the off-field issues.

BAL - TE Maxx Williams faces steep learning curve

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens TE Maxx Williams' play was inconsistent during offseason workouts and expectations for the rookie should be kept in check, in the opinion of The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has good upside as a pro, and his game always reminded us of a young Jason Witten. The rookie will have to get on track with the pro game, and he'll have to prove that he's a better starting option than second-year pro Crockett Gillmore. In addition to having arguably the coolest name in all of football, Gillmore has strong hands and is a savvy player who can move the chains.

    Friday Update

NE - Union offered league deal for QB Tom Brady

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was the subject of a settlement offer from the NFL Players Association to the league last week, but the offer was met with silence by the NFL, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Rumors and reports speculate that Brady is holding firm on his refusal to accept any suspension, though he would consider accepting a fine. If the NFL does not budge on his four-game suspension--or if he's even suspended at all--he is expected to go to federal court to fight the decision.

CHI - WR Kevin White projected to start

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White is slated to be in the Bears' starting lineup, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com. White had spent time with the second team during organized team activities earlier this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White should be the starter for the team, but this is John Fox ladies and gentlemen...he's not the first coach we think of when it comes to playing rookies early. White's ADP of WR35 (8.01) in 12-team PPR leagues is just too good to pass up.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin to be ready

Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) is expected to be 100% ready for training camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin is looking to improve on the solid numbers he had last year as a rookie. He's clearly Cam Newton's favorite target, and we like Benjamin as a mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners.

PIT - Mike Tomlin agrees to extension

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin agreed to an extension Thursday, July 23, through the 2018 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers have had three head coaches in the last 40-plus years. That's not a typo. It's no shock that Tomlin would get extended. He's one of the most successful and well-respected coaches in the league, and Tomlin could stay with the Steelers as long as he wants.

STL - RB Tre Mason to have first shot at starting?

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason will get first crack at the starting running back position until rookie RB Todd Gurley (knee) is healthy enough to start.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course Mason is going to get the first shot to start...especially after what he did last year as a rookie. Mason is a talented runner who can get skinny between the tackles, plus he's got good burst in the open field. He is not as powerful or fast as Gurley (when healthy), but Mason is a quality starter. The second-year back is a RB3 with RB2 upside while Gurley is eased into action.

CHI - WR Eddie Royal to be third starting WR?

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal is expected to be the Bears' third starting wide receiver, according to ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Royal should work well under Adam Gase again. The two worked together in Denver during Royal's 91-catch rookie season. Royal is unlikely to reach that total number of catches, but he should be a reliable receiver for Jay Cutler. We could see him snaring about 40 catches this year working behind Alshon Jeffery and rookie Kevin White.

MIN - TE Kyle Rudolph working out

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph has implemented more stretching, flexibility and yoga into his routine this offseason after taking six weeks off when the season ended.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rudolph just needs to stay healthy in order to star at the pro level. Over the past two years, he's only played in 17 games combined. You can snare him as a TE2 in your fantasy draft, but Rudolph has TE1 upside if he's healthy.

SD - RB Danny Woodhead involved in passing game

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead will remain involved in the passing game and on third downs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't forget about Woodhead when you're considering rookie RB Melvin Gordon in fantasy drafts. Gordon is a capable receiver out of the backfield, and he'll be the lead back for the Chargers this year. However, Woodhead is too valuable as a change-of-pace back--so the Chargers aren't going to keep him off the field in certain situations. Woodhead has more value in PPR leagues because there's a chance he could catch 50-plus passes for the Chargers this season.

SEA - S Earl Thomas iffy for opener

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (shoulder) isn't expected to be cleared for training camp, and his status is questionable for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is one of the best in the game when healthy, so expect the Seahawks to proceed with caution as he returns from this injury. He underwent surgery for a torn labrum back in February, and reports indicate there haven't been any setbacks. It's just going to take some time for him to be ready to get back on the field. Stay tuned here.

Interesting in the Brady case, NFLPA asking for a fine rather than a suspension. What kind of fine? Right now, 4 games for Brady amounts to $1.88M in lost salary. I expect this to go to the next level, Brady will appeal in federal court and I think salary is the sticking point.

The suspension is one thing, but the money is another. The NFL should have softened the blow with a paid suspension, Brady was just part of a larger conspiracy following along with the team agenda, essentially doing his job. Pay the man if he has to sit.

What are you smoking? Woodhead will be off the board long before the 14th and 15th rounds of a PPR draft.

His going price is 8th roundish. Quality running backs are hard to come by at that point and Woody is as viable an option as you'll find.

    Saturday Update

ARI - AZ adds TE Jermaine Gresham
    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Friday, July 24, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gresham was getting interest from a few teams, and he even had a standing offer from the Saints, but he decided to sign with the Cardinals. Fantasy owners should realize there's not much fantasy potential with this team. Bruce Arians doesn't utilize the tight end as a target in his offense.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson won't start right away
Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich
Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson will play a prominent role in Cleveland's offense in his rookie year, but RB Isaiah Crowell is still the favorite to start. Johnson is also the most capable pass-catcher in the trio of Johnson, Crowell and RB Terrence West, according to Nate Ulrich of The Akron Beacon Journal.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We agree that Johnson is the best pass-catcher out of the backfield, and that's how the rookie should make his biggest impact on the field this year. Fantasy owners should consider him a RB4 with upside in PPR leagues.

NO - Benjamin Watson to start?
    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett
New Orleans Saints TE Benjamin Watson is slated to start at tight end over TE Josh Hill, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Watson is a good all-around tight end, but he's not much of an option for fantasy owners. Hill can make some plays here and there in a part-time role.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin at playing weight
    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton
Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin said he is currently at his playing weight a week before training camp begins. Benjamin said he has changed his conditioning and diet in order to stay in shape.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're excited by Benjamin's prospects in year two. As a rookie last year, Benjamin proved to be Cam Newton's favorite target. His size/strength combination makes him a great option in the red zone, and Benjamin is a WR2 with upside for fantasy owners this year.

DEN - DE Derek Wolfe suspended four games
Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck
Denver Broncos DE Derek Wolfe was suspended four games by the NFL for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. Wolfe said he took a medication he didn't know was banned.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Broncos were relying on Wolfe to be a starter this year under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Without him for the first month of the season, the Broncos will turn to Malik Jackson and Vance Walker as their starters at defensive end. Wolfe's run-stuffing ability could be missed while he's suspended.

ATL - Atlanta has high hopes for TE Jacob Tamme
    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure
Atlanta Falcons TE Jacob Tamme could be the best tight end the Falcons have had since TE Tony Gonzalez retired, according to Vaugh McClure of ESPN.com.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tamme is not washed up, but in Denver he didn't get much of an opportunity behind Julius Thomas and Virgil Green. With the Falcons, we should see Tamme emerge as the top tight end. For fantasy purposes, we only consider Tamme a high-end TE3 with upside.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson is projected to be the No. 2 wide receiver behind WR Jeremy Maclin, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher.

Fantasy owners are avoiding Wilson even if he's the starter opposite Maclin. We like rookie Chris Conley to eventually emerge as a starter. The rookie from Georgia is fast, explosive and capable of making plays above the rim. So long as the Chiefs have Alex Smith at quarterback, their passing game won't be too much of a threat.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford to be tagged?
Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Mike Sielski
Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford could either be franchise tagged or transition tagged if he has a successful season and the Eagles don't want to give him a long-term contract. If Bradford were transition tagged, he would be able to sign with other teams, but the Eagles would have the option to match their offers.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Why in the world would a team make a high-priced investment in Bradford? He's got to prove that he can stay healthy and start playing up to his potential in the pros. If (big if) that happens this season, then perhaps the Eagles would consider investing in him for the future.

NFL - Teams interested in RB Ray Rice
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson
Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) has drawn interest from NFL teams, but those teams are supposedly reluctant to sign him, according to sources.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Rice might have more left in the tank than some think. Any team interested in Rice would take a risk in the public relations department. Rice has been trying to get back in the league, and there's a good chance he could end up on a roster before the start of the regular season.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta officially goes on PUP list
    Source: NFL
Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) was officially placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 24.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No surprise here. Pitta missed all of the offseason workouts so far, and there's a good chance he could begin the regular season on the PUP list.

MIA - QB Josh Freeman released
    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan
Miami Dolphins QB Josh Freeman was released Friday, July 24.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Freeman has been trying to stick around with the Dolphins as their third quarterback. The team must not have been impressed as Freeman gets his walking papers today. The Dolphins move forward with Matt Moore and McLeod Bethel-Thompson as the backup quarterbacks behind Ryan Tannehill.

OAK - TE Clive Walford projected as starter
    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson
Oakland Raiders TE Clive Walford is slated in as the starting tight end, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Williamson is one of the best beat writers in the NFL, and he's been reporting positive things about Walford all offseason long. The rookie from Miami can make crazy catches seem routine. He goes all out to make a grab, and he's dangerous after the catch because of his open-field agility. Dynasty league owners should be all over Walford. Re-draft owners should see him only as a TE3 with upside.

HOU - WR Nate Washington could be No. 2 WR
    Source: ESPN.com - Tania Ganguli
Houston Texans WR Nate Washington is projected to be the No. 2 wide receiver behind WR DeAndre Hopkins and ahead of WR Cecil Shorts, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Shorts might be best used as a slot receiver. However, the team has rookie Jaelen Strong currently as the fourth receiver on the depth chart. Don't be surprised if Strong can work his way up to the starting lineup at some point this year.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman to be No. 2 WR?
    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley
Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman is projected to start opposite WR Steve Smith this year, according to ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Perriman is the definition of a deep threat. He averaged more than 20 yards per catch over the last two years at UCF. The Ravens will use his ability to stretch the field while guys like Smith and the tight ends clean up on underneath routes. We like him as a WR4/WR5 with upside.

Going off topic a bit (but not totally), Melvin Gordon +800 could be a solid bet for Rookie of the Year. Woodhead should only see the field on third downs. (off off topic: Agholor +1400 could be good too)
