Padres Considered the Favorites to Land James Shields

Not a slam dunk yet as their are still a few other teams in contention, but this would be a great ballpark to land in for him.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Padres "have to be considered favorites" to sign James Shields.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman has also said the Padres "appear to be among the favorites" for the right-hander. It doesn't come as a surprise, as they've been mentioned as a possible landing spot and Shields makes his home in San Diego. Heyman adds that Shields might have to wind up settling for a contract "perhaps a bit more" that Ervin Santana's $55 million deal. It would be a big drop from his nine-figure asking price from earlier this offseason. The Marlins, Cubs and Blue Jays also have some degree of interest in Shields.

Santana got 4/55 (around 14 mil per). I will be floored if Shields can't command closer to 20 per.

Seems like the Padres are making history this year. It's never been like this.

Not a fan of the guy but he would be wasted on a team like the Padres who'll likely miss the playoffs for the next decade.

That would be a good move for him. Going to national league in a pitchers park.

Yeah it would be a good park for any pitcher.

Take Padres closer Benoit for example... guy couldnt get anybody out in Detroit pitching against real hitters and now they think he is the second coming of Trevor Hoffman in San Diego

Never can figure out why historically bad franchises overpay for marginal players instead of developing their own. I like Houston's approach of signing players early in their career long term for much less money.

Curious as to if they might be using the possible signing of Shields, as leverage with the Phillies, in a potential Hamels trade. If the Padres sign him, they don't really need Hamels.

Shields and Cashner would be a solid 1/2 or Hamels and Shields would be just as good going Lefty/Righty. NL West could shape up to be a great race...love to see the Dodgers getting challenged

This seems to be the latest update from today. I'm ready for Shields to sign somewhere and get the camps up and running.

According to Scott Miller of Bleacher Report, James Shields and the Padres are believed to be at an impasse after several hours of negotiations.

Miller notes that the ball is now believed to be in Shields' court, indicating that the Padres have made their best and final offer. The veteran right-hander's market has been very slow to develop this winter, so he may need to lower his expectations and salary demands slightly. For fantasy purposes, there would be no better landing spot for him than San Diego.

Shields did himself no favors with his poor post-season and he apparently has a higher view of his self-worth than everyone else. It may be a good long-term move to accept the Padres "final" offer (if it really is) as he could posting inflated numbers in that ballpark and set himself up for a much bigger payday later on.

They were in the Shields market for about 15 minutes.
What Shields does is eat innings, he's always good for 200 plus innings a season, he's not worth what he is asking though.

Shields winds up with San Diego or in Miami.
Cashman might pull a rabbit out of his ass if he can get him to come down in price.
NYY needs an innings eater, Tanaka, CC, Pineda, all of them except Eovaldi can't be depended on to make 30 starts.
    Shields can.
But it's a 40 to 1 shot he winds up in NY

Dodgers dont have to worry about the Padres or Giants this year that i promise you.

only team that could possibly test them in the West is the Rockies and only if Tulo and Cargo stay healthy.

A front four of Tyson Ross with Ian Kennedy, Andrew Cashner, and Shields makes SD's starting four a top five rotation.

Not with a rotation of De La Rosa, Chacin, Matzek and Jordan Lyles.

100% agree. Guy isn't worth near what he's asking for. He should go to San Diego. That ball park may turn him into Big Game

OK, onus is on you, besides Dodgers and Washington name 8 other teams that have a front four better than SD with Shields?
After Iwakuma and King Seattle have a shitty J.A. Happ and two unprovens Paxton and Walker.
    NYY no?
Mets, maybe when Harvey is 100 percent.
Miami is still a couple of pieces away, and Jose Fernandez is on the shelf.
    Atlanta? Not any more.
