Guess that means Beltran goes elsewhere

Lol at the Yankees..they have no farm system and they will buy a team because they have a $400 million payroll. Put a salary cap and they will be the Jaguars of MLB. Most incompetent team in history.

Yanks haven't been spending as big lately.

Yanks are exactly middle of the pack in terms of farm system

    What a dumb signing.

adios....thanks for the memories...and the free tacos in the 07 world series....

in all seriousness.....the sox drafted ellsbury knowing that damon would end up walking....they drafted bradley jr with the same thing in mind......obviously bradley isnt a polished major league hitter yet....and they prob wont hand him the job.....but the guy can run and field at a similar level right now....just needs work at the plate

They are not signing Grandy, Els will punish that right field grandstand, Gardner and Els will swipe 110 bases combined...
    Els has gold caliber glove.

    Typical Yankees fan post.

I'm going to assume pavyracer (who yes, is very ignorent) meant the Yankees of here and now. Well nashy it's not 1920 anymore. It's also not 1955. It's not 1975 either. And no it's not 2000. It's 2013 and this Yankees management is absolutely clueless and they'll continue to lose as long as they continue making moves like this.

    7 years for a 30 year old - dumb.

Over 20 mil a year for a decent bat and good fielder/baserunner - way overpaid

All this for a guy who has an injury history.

The real kicker is this: You could have brought back a much much better bat and guy with no injury history for what? 5-10 more million a year? This is beyond idiotic.

Actually think this is one of the better moves the Yanks have made lately. If Ellsbury keeps up his production and doesn't take his money and run then this will be worth it. I think he's a competitor though and won't settle just because he has a big deal now.

    Decent bat?
    You are ignorant
    .297/.350 is decent?
Now couple that .350 OBA with all those swipes and runs scored.

Cano is playing hardball, and Cashman said phuck it then, Cano wasn't going to settle for Yankees best offer.

Cool. One year of more than 9 homeruns (clearly was a fluke) and he played in hitter-friendly Fenway.

Ellsbury is a speed guy. Which of those guys do you know that ages well? Is it Carl Crawford? How about Chone Figgins, remember him? Michael Bourn? I'm not saying he stinks but if you really think this is a good contract you need to have your head examined.

Sometimes less is more. The Yankees don't seem to get this. They think they need to make a move every single year.

If he produces double digit homers, his typical .300/.350 scores his typical 100 runs, plays 140 games for four years on the front end of that contract, gets a WS ring, the back end is paid in full

Redsox never wanted to keep him in the first place.
They already made the same disastrous mistake with same type player in Crawford and found a miracle when the Dodgers took him.

Horrible signing by the Yanks. Overpaid huge, coulda waited n got him a ton cheaper or at least 1 or 2 years less.
Looks like the Yanks are going out of their way to tell Cano to suck a dick with his 300 million dreams.
I like the Yanks approach as far as that, but the player they chose to spend it on was terrible.
Cashman no longer has blank checks to buy teams, so this signing could very well get him canned when or if he flops, which at 30 and his style of play is very possible.

Good day for RedSox fans, bad day for Yanks fans IMO.

Say good-bye to Cano because when he's forced to suck it up and take realistic money at around 180-200 million, it's not gonna be the Yanks he settles it with.
Some team should get a pretty good deal on him now, even though I'm not a Cano fan.

great signing by the Yankees without a doubt. As long as he stays healthy Ellsbury is a game changer. As already pointed out he is a great fit for Yankee stadium. Not sure how their pitching will be next year though they are desperately in need of multiple starters

    My bad...
In six full seasons Jacoby Ellsbury has averaged 114 games. He made one All-Star team, won one Gold Glove and hit more than 9 homers once

As a diehard Red Sox fan, I'm not a believer in the "traitor" aspect of free agency. Very few baseball players would hold ties so tight that they'd pass on an overpaid contract.

Quite simply, the Yankees overpaid for the piece of glass Ellsbury. I would have loved to see him stay in Boston, but if someone is going to pay $21M/year for him then he should go. Ellsbury hit the jackpot and I'm fairly certain that he'll be less productive as a Yankee.

Jackie Bradley, Jr era starts NOW

plus they don't have to pay the Pirates to have AJ Burnett pitch for them

It's amazing that the Yankees keep saying they're trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold this season, yet they continue to over pay players and haven't addressed their starting rotation concerns. Plus, they say they're in the mix for the Japanese stud pitcher

    Same ole Yankees.
