If you want a contest to determine the best, you need to set up parameters that let bettors prove they are the best, not force them to make picks they don't want to make.
Strongly disagree. Plus, the team aspect allows entrants to specialize across markets. 777 is completely realistic. I expect to make nearly twice that amount on my own in one season of college hoops.

Here's another idea: require a minimum of 500 plays (or even less), and a max of 1000 (or more). This gives huge incentive to high volume bettors like me, but does not necessarily punish those who choose to be more selective. I think this fits nicely into how most people would define "Best Handicapper in the World."

Namely, "best" should be determined by number of units won- which relies on both hit rate AND volume. And by setting the requirement to a range of plays, rather than a fixed number, each team would be allowed to manage their risk, to a certain degree, in a way that they feel comfortable. Fixing the number may end up punishing both high AND low volume bettors alike, which is unfair.

    What do you guys think?

I think you're coming up with some good solutions Matthew. But you're time is better spent curing cancer and world hunger.

Because both will be solved before SBR collects $1,000 from 700 different individuals and this contest comes to fruition.

Why not start smaller and grow over the years.

It's one thing to have a contest with point entry but to have a buy in contest is totally different.

I'd be running it at $200 buy in. Have the SBR gaurenteed pot for prizes. If it's marketed well and the numbers are big enough the pot may even grow.

If it runs smoothly you can increase the pot and but in each year.

$1000 is a lot to have held for so long.

Lot of great ideas jono and Matthew and others.

Yes, we will start with a scalable plan with strong sponsorship. We need something MUCH better than the Hilton's contest. You will see a lot of announcements from SBR over the coming days and weeks that will make more sense as to why we will host a world championship of betting.

    John,

Can you make a phone call and get Pabinator reinstated? Guy got screwed...

You've unbanned some pretty shitty posters before, this guy never did anything and would keep your poker games going!

I stick behind the "All One Unit" plays format... A contest is not real life, all plays should count equally...

Crazy... If there's that much of an overlay... I might be interested, but I would definitely be the fish. I don't even have a clue what this whole 777 and all this other stuff means.

I only heard 300k for free

$1000 is a good number for an entry fee, but I actually like $1500 more. I think the increased revenue per entry would more than make up for whatever decrease in contestants there would be. If you're a strong enough handicapper to seriously challenge in a long term contest such as this, you can almost always come up with $1500 (and if you can't, then you are probably saving yourself some $$$$$ ).
