Cowboys TE Jason Witten working out; WR Miles Austin on track for Week 1

After being told to stay inactive for 10 days to let his lacerated spleen heal, the Dallas Cowboys tight end was working out with an athletic trainer during Monday's practice. More should be known about Witten's health when he visits a doctor Tuesday.
In other Cowboys injury news, the Dallas Morning News reports that wide receiver Miles Austin is still on track to play Week 1 versus the New York Giants. However, he still hasn't returned to practice due to his strained hamstring, and head coach Jason Garrett said Austin won't practice until the end of this week at the earliest.



Bills cut vince young
The Buffalo Bills signed Vince Young in May to become their backup quarterback. Turns out, he couldn't even make it as the third-stringer. Young was released Monday, two days after a two-interception performance in the team's third preseason game. He had a preseason QB rating of 48.2..


The New England Patriots have locked up tight end Aaron Hernandez through 2018. The team and player agreed to a five-year, $40 million contract extension Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter via league sources. The deal carries $16.4 million guaranteed and a $12.5 million signing bonus. Hernandez caught 79 passes for 910 yards and seven touchdowns last season.


San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is a fast healer. Well, at least that's what he will tell you if you talk to him. The North County TImes did recently and -- no surprise -- Mathews said his fractured clavicle is healing quiicker than expected. "I'm definitely ahead of schedule," Mathews said. "I've always been a fast healer, and that's proving true right now.

The Seahawks have found a new team for Tarvaris Jackson. The Buffalo Bills took on the 29-year-old quarterback in a trade Sunday. NFL.com's Michael Lombardi and Ian Rapoport broke the news.


The Baltimore Ravens released kicker Billy Cundiff. In his place, the new kicker will be undrafted kicker Justin Tucker out of the University of Texas. Cundiff made the Pro Bowl in 2010 but is more recently infamous for missing a game-tying, 32-yard field goal against the New England Patriots which abruptly ended their playoff run in the AFC Championship game.


After weeks of speculation, it appears that Tampa Bay Bucs running back Doug Martin has officially earned the starting role. Martin most recently started the preseason game against the New England Patriots and rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries and a TD. He also added three receptions for 12 yards

Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano said Monday that wide receiver Austin Collie "should be ready" when the team kicks off the regular season against the Chicago Bears in 13 days. Collie suffered his fourth concussion in two years last Sunday versus Pittsburgh..
