#1545Yanks' Andujar to have season-ending surgery
NEW YORK -- Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar will have season-ending surgery to repair a small labrum tear in his right shoulder.
New York announced the decision Wednesday night during the second game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles that the Yankees swept.
Andujar, last year's American League Rookie of the Year runner-up, initially was sidelined by the injury from April 1 to May 3, and he struggled mightily in his return.
After going 3-for-34 with no extra-base hits, he went back onto the injured list on Monday. Manager Aaron Boone had said Andujar was discussing the possibility of an operation with the team and his family.
"Hurt for him a little bit," Boone said. "But know this is also just the beginning of the road back."
Yankees head team physician Christopher Ahmad is expected to perform the surgery on Monday at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
The 24-year-old Andujar was a major factor in the Yankees' run to a playoff spot last season, hitting .297 with 27 home runs and 92 RBIs.
"Miggy's beloved in that room and obviously really important to us between the lines and just who he is," Boone said. "Hopefully, this is a really good step for him and starting the healing process."
Without Andujar this season, the Yankees have relied on Gio Urshela at third base. Newly acquired slugger Kendrys Morales is likely to pick up the bulk of the designated hitter duties until some of New York's other injured hitters return.

#1551The Dodgers will place right-hander Kenta Maeda on the 10-day IL before tomorrow’s game, according to Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link). Maeda’s placement caps off a busy day of roster-shuffling for the Dodgers, as the team also activated lefty Caleb Ferguson from the IL and sent catcher Rocky Gale and right-hander J.T. Chargois to Triple-A. Prior to tomorrow’s game, the Dodgers will also call up utilityman Matt Beaty from Triple-A and select the contract of outfielder Kyle Garlick.
Maeda fouled a ball off his thigh in last night’s game, and the Dodgers are thusly putting him on the IL “as a precaution,” Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register tweets. Since the Dodgers have two off-days next week, it looks like Maeda will miss one start at the most while he recovers from what looks like a minor injury.
Los Angeles has deployed Maeda exclusively as a starting pitcher in 2019, and the righty has delivered his usual strong results. Though nine starts and 51 1/3 innings, Maeda has a 3.51 ERA, 9.1 K/9, and 2.60 K/BB rate, numbers that are largely backed up by advanced metrics. Maeda is inducing soft contact on 27% of his batted balls this season, the second-highest total of any qualified starter in the game.
A 28th-round pick for the Dodgers in the 2015 draft, Garlick will get his first MLB exposure after posting a 1.002 OPS over 136 PA for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. The 27-year-old Garlick has a .283/.341/.519 slash line through 1678 career minor league plate appearances.Comment -

#1557The Cardinals have designated veteran reliever Luke Gregerson for assignment, per a club announcement. Fellow right-hander Dominic Leone was optioned down to create another active roster spot.
Those moves will clear the way for two other hurlers. The club has activated righty Carlos Martinez, who was expected to be brought back in a relief capacity this weekend after opening the year on the injured list due to shoulder issues. It has also called up righty Ryan Helsley.
Gregerson, who recently turned 35, is one of several recent free-agent bullpen additions that hasn’t worked out for the Cards. He has allowed 7.36 earned runs per nine in his 18 1/3 innings with the club since the start of 2018, a disappointing turn for a long-excellent hurler.
Injuries have taken a toll, with Gregerson’s stuff suffering. Since returning this year after undergoing knee surgery in 2018, he has shown a notable velocity decline and managed only a 4.8% swinging-strike rate — less than a third his career average of 15.0%.
The Cards will eat the remainder of the money owed to Gregerson, including the balance of his $5MM salary this season and a $1MM buyout. The deal included a club/vesting option for 2020.
Leone has also been a frustrating piece for the Cards since coming over via trade in advance of the ’18 campaign. He’s carrying 11.4 K/9 in the early going but has also dished out 4.6 free passes and surrendered 2.1 home runs per nine innings. Through 21 1/3 frames, Leone has been tagged for 19 earned runs.
The Cardinals will continue to pay Leon’s $1.26MM salary. He only just tallied enough MLB service to push into the 4+ service class, so the timing of his (hopeful) return to the majors won’t impact his arb status. But it certainly will play a significant role in what he can command via arbitration and whether he’s tendered a contract this fall.Comment -

#1559Pressly sets mark with 39th straight blank outing
BOSTON -- Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly broke the major league record for consecutive appearances without giving up a run on Friday night against the Boston Red Sox in a 3-1 victory, tallying his 39th straight scoreless outing.
Pressly broke the previous mark set in 2011 by Craig Kimbrel.
Houston acquired Pressly from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline last year, coveting the reliever in part for the high spin rate on his fastball. Pressly has not allowed a run to score since August 10, 2018, totaling 38 scoreless innings. Since the last time he allowed a run, Pressly has struck out 47 batters, walked just three and allowed 17 hits.
"I just tried to put it in the back of my mind as far as I possibly could," Pressly said. "My job is to go out there and get people out and throw up zeros as many times as I possibly can and put this team in a situation to win. That's really all I was thinking about."Comment -

#1562I still dont understand the move to keep Carlos Martinez in the pen. Cards have a solid pen this year. You can never have too much starting pitching. Not to mention this guy was their ace and a perennial work horse. Get him stretched back out, he cant be worse for your rotation than friggin Wacha or Dakota HudsonComment -

#1568The Padres are hoping shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will return May 24, the start of a six-game road trip for the club, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Tatis went to the injured list on April 30 with a hamstring strain, temporarily derailing a phenomenal start to the 20-year-old rookie’s career. The Padres have had the luxury of using Manny Machado at short to fill in for Tatis, but moving the former off third base has left the hot corner to the light-hitting Ty France.
Here’s more on several other household names dealing with injuries…
- Angels left fielder Justin Upton remains a ways off from making his 2019 debut, as he explained to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register and other reporters Saturday. That’s not surprising, though, considering Upton was slated to miss eight to 12 weeks when he went down with a toe injury at the end of March. While Upton is one of the Angels’ best complements to Mike Trout, his absence hasn’t been ruinous thanks to the surprisingly great offensive production waiver pickup Brian Goodwin has offered in his place.
- Red Sox left-hander David Price will come off the IL to start Monday, manager Alex Cora told reporters, including Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Price will end up missing exactly two weeks after heading to the shelf with elbow tendinitis May 6. Before that, Price followed up last fall’s playoff heroics with a 3.75 ERA/3.42 FIP and a career-high 10.5 K/9 across 36 frames.
- Utilityman Aledmys Diaz left the Astros’ game Friday with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, manager AJ Hinch announced (via Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle). The injury doesn’t seem as if it will require an IL stint, though, as Hinch noted Diaz “could possibly be back as early as next series.” Diaz had been filling in at second base since last weekend, when the team placed starter Jose Altuve on the IL, and produced at a white-hot clip before going down with his own injury. Hinch indicated the Astros will turn to Yuli Gurriel at second and Tyler White at first for however long Diaz is out.
- Athletics designated hitter Khris Davis incurred a left hip injury on May 5, and the issue continues to trouble him nearly two full weeks later, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com relays. Davis said Saturday he’s “not 100 hundred percent,” which caused the Athletics to scratch him from their lineup. Manager Bob Melvin admitted there’s “a little bit of concern” for the 31-year-old Davis, who was eminently durable with the A’s from 2016-18, though he’s hopeful the slugger will be OK by Sunday.

#1571Maddon protests loss to Nats over double toe-tap
WASHINGTON -- The Chicago Cubs protested Saturday night's 5-2 loss to the Nationals, with manager Joe Maddon arguing that Washington reliever Sean Doolittle used an illegal delivery in the ninth inning.
The double toe-tap Doolittle appeared to use as he delivered the ball to home plate has been deemed illegal in the past, but umpires on Saturday did not force the left-hander to alter his delivery, much to Maddon's dismay.
"I said, 'If you guys don't clean it up, I'm going to protest the game,'" Maddon said after the game. "It's their rule, not mine. I didn't ask for it in the first place."Maddon came out to argue after Doolittle's first pitch of the ninth inning -- a strike to pinch hitter Albert Almora Jr. Though the umpires huddled with each other, and then with Doolittle, they sided with the lefty while deeming his delivery OK.
"[Maddon] thought he was tapping his foot, which in itself is not illegal, and this all kind of stems from his pitcher being called on something that was a little bit different than what Doolittle was doing," crew chief Sam Holbrook said. "So in our judgment, Doolittle did nothing illegal at all."
Holbrook was referring to Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr., who was told in the second game of the season that he couldn't do his version of the double toe-tap. Recently, Mariners pitcher Cory Gearrin was also forced to change his delivery after warming up mid-inning.
"It's real simple," a somewhat exasperated Maddon said. "That's exactly what Carl was told he can't do. I was told that's an illegal pitch and he can't do it."
Edwards added: "I figured once it happened to myself, it would get around."
Maddon officially protested with one out in the ninth inning. If the Cubs win the protest, the teams would pick up the game from that point, as Doolittle retired the next two batters to earn the save.
Afterward, Doolittle was having none of what Maddon was trying to sell.
"In that moment, he's not doing anything other than rattle me," Doolittle told reporters, according to an mlb.com report. "It was kinda tired. Sometimes he has to remind people how smart he is."Comment -
