    Texas Lock's Down Spring Practices

The Texas Longhorns officially started spring practice yesterday and all drills are closed to the public. Mack Brown will try to find out about a football team that had a losing season last year. You can bet these drills will be intense and personal. Not for the weak or faint at heart for sure.

Closing practices is not a bad idea. No media; no people in the stands; no autographs; no distractions. Many of these players are in for a wake up call.

I really do not see why practices are open to begin with. Have a media day and leave it at that.

Before the start of spring practice, Mack Brown had made it perfectly clear they were in no hurry to name a starter at the quarterback position. After a week's worth of spring sessions, that QB tack has remained true. Incumbent Garrett Gilbert, sophomore Case McCoy, redshirt freshman Connor Wood and true freshman David Ash are dueling for the starting job. New offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin indicated a starter may not be named until a week before the opening game.

Sounds like the Texas coaches are sending a message to many of last year's starters.
