    Finally! One LESS Bowl Game

After years of going in the wrong direction, the FBS finally lost one of it's meaningless minor bowl games. The International Bowl is no longer. The Big East pulled out of it, so the bowl decided to fold up for the present time. This leaves the Big East with 5 bowl tie-ins and the MAC with 2. There are now a total of 35 bowl games. Now if we can just get rid of about 15 more.

Surprised more haven't folded. Attendance is non-existent at some of these games...

Still think they should just set up a playoff system and leave it at that. Screw the whole BCS crap.

We would have fewer bowl games if someone could convince ESPN that the sports books are the only TVs showing a game with two 6-6 teams and 5,000 people in the stands.

They have some type of rules that cover these things, but they are so liberal that it is nearly impossible to get a game unsanctioned. Now if sponsors would stop throwing their money away on these games, you sould see some action. last year, there were 6 bowls before Christmas, and 9 bowls after New Years. That is totally rediculous and unacceptable. This year, the International Bowl is gone, but why have the Liberty, Papa John's, Alamo, and GMAC Bowls played AFTER New Years Day? Do we really want to see some Sun Belt Conference team play the SEC #9 team after the Rose Bowl game? Is it necessary to watch some MAC flunky play the ACC #8 team after the Capital One Bowl?

The problem is, all these garbage bowls are money makers. I do not know if the sponsors get their moneys worth with these bowls, but the organizers surely win money. If not, they would not repeat the following year, and no more such bowls would be created. I read somewhere that some of the poorest bowls used to have the teams as co-sponsors, forcing them to stay at certain hotel, sell a number of tickets, etc. So, some teams refused to go to such bowls.

The NCAA has rules for sanctioning bowl games. Certain attendance requirements must be met. The problem is that those requirements are exceedingly low, and get lower each year. Do any of you remember when the Orange Bowl was in danger of losing it's BCS Bowl status because of low attendance? This is why they have to go after the matchup that will guarantee them the biggest crowd turnout, not necessairily the best game.

The bowl tie-in scenario is another major problem. If you start knocking some of these samll bowls out, you start knocking some of the BCS Conference teams out of bowl games. Now there is no problem knocking the lower tiered teams in conferences with 8 or 9 tie ins out of a bowl, but what about the Pac 10 with 6 tie ins, or the Big East with 5? On top of all that, you have the non-BCS Conference headaches. The MAC has 13 teams in it's conference but only 2 bowl tie ins. Can you kill one of those bowl games?

I still don't understand what the hell is wrong with a playoff system. It's easy. Let's just go this route:

Top 8 Ranked BCS Teams Play in a Tournament.
They don't want to drop the bowl games so have 25 other bowl games.

Now the bowls usually start around the 20th of December so why not on Xmas Eve have the #1 play the #8 at 11:00, the #2 play the #7 at 1:00, the #3 play the #6 at 3:30, and the #4 play the #5 play at 6:00 all at the higher seeds home field.

Now let's say all the higher seeds advance. On New Years Day have the #1 play the #4 at 4:00 in the Rose Bowl and the #2 play the #3 in the Orange Bowl. Then on the 7th have the two teams play in the National Championship. All the while you can still have all the garbage bowls. Every year you can rotate which 2 bowls get the two semi final games between Rose, Fiesta, Orange, and Sugar.

Tell me what is wrong with this?

A playoff system would be just as flawed as the BCS is right now. Look at NCAA basketball... You rarely get the best team and it makes the regular season completely meaningless. If the playoff system was in last year, you could have a 2 loss team like Ohio State who got hot at the end of the season beat an undefeated Alabama for the title game, and if something like that were to happen it might even be more controversial than the BCS system we have now.

If that were the case, then why have a playoff system in the NFL, when the team with the best record rarely wins the Superbowl?

The problem with that is that the bowls will not know which teams will be playing in their games. Which bowl games do the losers of the first round games go to? Are they just eliminated? You can not expect two bowls to sacrifice their games every year.
