The Pac-12 may want to look at dividing along football and basketball-only members. I think Gonzaga and St. Mary’s basketball only. And then explore SDSU, Fresno, Boise and UNLV as football only.” — Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman [/QUOTE]
Nevada Reno and Fresno St would be a great addition -- gl all

The only way the Pac 12 stays alive is if they raid the Big 12. It is pretty much the same either way. If Stanford and Cal get shutout maybe they raid the Texas teams and Oklahoma State but they are not really going to have any money to offer. I doubt the Big 12 schools would go for it.

TV likes this national idea. They don't want West Coast games that are not marquee. The Pac 12 is considered minor league now.

gophers, badgers, and fresno st have about the same amount of national relevance

none of them have close to sniffing a title since 1960... then again outside of the sec/acc there has only been 1 title in the last 17 yrs so i have no idea why the big 10 always thinks they are so great in football

for the most part the big 10 is a bunch of fat slow white guys

Only one team can win every year.

Pat's won so many super bowls but 29 other teams very profitable.

that's what everyone said about big east basketball, when espn built it up and then tore it apart after the tv deal was done

and let's be serious, even without tv, it's hard NOT to be a moneymaker when you don't pay your players anything, and get students to run your concessions/ticketing, etc etc etc

why is college football so big and college baseball isn't? marketing

No, it's because while Baseball is America's pastime, Football is America's passion.

NFL only 17 reg season games.
College Football only about 12-14 before the bowl games.

Americans love Football so we watch it like crazy.

Outside of America, it is Soccer.

Market all day long outside of America and you will not TV viewership.

Football is engrained in the American soul.

also BETTING and that nerd garbage FANTASY FOOTBALL.

now go look at the ratings for the NCAA Tourney and the NBA playoffs this year. Off the charts.

    tourney because of gambling.

That is the most absurd statement I’ve read on this forum in years. People in this country prefer football over baseball as a result of what is on the screen. Baseball has become boring to a large % of Americans. The excitement of the two sports can’t even be compared. Baseball has been dying for years.

football is just as boring to watch... heck i can watch a 3+ hr football game in 20 minutes if i fast-forward the commercials and play clock

tell me how many football games you watch (beginning to end) without any bets on them, or a rooting interest in the teams

USC article makes case for adding Dogs to Pac-12 if ACC/PAC-12 merger doesn't happen

With the Pac-12 set to change drastically in a couple of years, other programs are trying — or at least hoping — to move to the Pac-12. Primarily, the Mountain West Conference schools are interested in the idea of a move, according to Jon Wilner of The San Jose Mercury News.
Fresno State, Boise State or UNLV: Any of these Mountain West schools could be added in tandem with San Diego State, although it’s easy to imagine how that would be received on many Pac-12 campuses. None of them add media value or clear the traditional academic bar, and UNLV has one of the worst football programs in captivity. But when you aren’t operating from a position of strength, standards must change.
With regard to Fresno State, we’ll say this: California’s Central Valley is home to 6.5 million people — it’s the equivalent of Seattle and Portland combined — and a good portion of them are Bulldogs fans.
Wilner brings up terrific points all across the board. UNLV offers basically nothing. Boise State has a terrific football team and a decent basketball team, and San Diego State and Fresno State both sport good teams in both major sports.
But, the Bulldogs clearly make sense to come along with the Aztecs. Wilner already mentioned the massive number of people in the Central Valley, and for that reason alone, the Pac-12 should seriously consider bringing Fresno State.
The Bulldogs’ football program is on the rise, and the rivalry between San Diego State has become a must-watch game. The market alone makes Fresno State an obvious choice, and people come from all over the Valley to watch games at Bulldog Stadium.

    yeah i agree

conferences were supposed to keep people close to home, shorter travel so they had more time to study/practice, etc etc

teams from new jersey and california in the same conference is about as dumb as it gets

playoff system made other bowls pretty irrelevant, and teams from "non power-5" conferences have been screwed... ridiculous to have teams that could go undefeated and not even have a chance for a championship, no other sport does that

also while i'm on a rant about college sports

why do taxpayers pay for their stadiums, and taxpayers pay for ridiculous salaries? college coaches are the highest paid public employees in pretty much every state... please explain to me why guys like zion williamson and anthony davis made 0 in college while their coach made $8 million/year, some of these athletic directors make over $1 million/year, etc etc

College sports is professional football. It is extremely profitable. You used to travel by bus now you travel by jet plane. It is easier to travel across country than it used to be to bus from Iowa to Michigan. There is big money to be made and they are making it and they do not even have to pay the players.

Because sports is the most important thing in American society. It is the only thing that matters. We spend huge amounts of money developing our players and we want to see them play to the highest level and make other people as much money as possible.

College sports at least pay their own way. It is the pros that get tax subsidies. They get a free stadium and then charge you for parking.

not here, where the university of wisconsin is publicly funded

sports is nothing more than the old "bread and circus" routine to distract people from the fact that they are slaves to a system that is fukking them over 24/7

Wisconsin has some enormously profitable sports franchises. They have more money than they know what to do with and billions of endowment on top of that.

yet they continue to take in money from taxes, and keep raising tuition rates, even though people were virtual and less teachers were needed, weird huh?

Not weird at all. Major universities are hedge funds with a college attached.

Wisconsin football clears $48 million in profits on football and that is even charging themselves for tuition and fees which is totally bogus. They are not costing taxpayers anything. The rest of the scam might be but that has nothing to do with its professional sports teams.

Would you rather be the 1980s Green Bay Packers or Milwaukee Bucks or Wisconsin Badgers of 2022?

the 1980s milwaukee bucks were fantastic, they made the playoffs all 10 times in that decade, unlike the wisconsin badgers that have NEVER made the playoffs

and my point was that if wisconsin is making so much money on sports, why do the taxpayers fund so much of the school operations? it's weird that only 20% of their revenue is tuition, that should be 100% so the rest of us don't pay for people's education

Revenue from state government for the 2019–20 fiscal year total $529 million

The Bucks were good but I don't think they made $48 million per year. You don't play pro sports to win games. You play to make money. The Wisconsin Badgers have an impressive sports franchise.

Wisconsin gets tax dollars because states fund state universities. It does not matter if they make millions from sports or endowments. Those are considered additional revenues.
