Big 12 in line to expand to 16 teams with Boise, SDSU, Colorado State and USF

After adding Houston, BYU, UCF and Cincinnati the league is apparently set to add Boise, San Diego State, USF and Colorado State.

The Iowa State AD tipped their hand by saying they were solidifying their "Western front." Since they do not have a Western front, it seems Boise, Colorado State and SDSU will follow BYU.

So they are officially blowing up both the other conferences. I'd say this is going backward but it does pretty much give you everything else worth having.

Especially for academic institutions. When you cannot count the number of teams in your conference, you are obviously in for just one reason.

Maybe when this is over, they will just name the conferences after the TV networks they are on.

I think this would hurt you more in recruiting because you had yourself up to ACC and Pac 12 standards and now going back to glorified Mountain West but they cannot help themselves.

So you can see how this is going to work, they are going to group UCF, USF, West Virginia, Cincinnati; BYU, Boise, SDSU, CSU; Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Houston; Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, OSU. The 4-team pools play each other every year and one of the others on a rotational basis.

Now if you are the Mountain West, you probably have to get Texas El Paso, North Texas, Texas State and SMU if possible. Maybe North Dakota State. If you are the AAC, you pick up UAB, Western Kentucky, Appalachian State and Charlotte.

The Sun Belt might add Tarleton State and Abilene Christian.

For what? These conferences just need schools to have a conference at this point. You take the biggest schools. I never even heard of Coastal Carolina until two years ago. It is not hard to become Coastal Carolina.

That are forced by Alabama. They wanted to kill the program. I would not want to add any of them.

I guess the Mountain West could snag Tulsa. If you could get SMU, Tulsa, North Texas and Texas State or Texas San Antonio or UTEP. That would be pretty solid.

Actually, it probably works the other way. The AAC adds North Texas, UTSA and maybe UMass and Connecticut.

I don't think the Mountain West could get anybody out of CUSA since they have a TV deal. So they probably have to go North Dakota State, New Mexico State, Montana and Eastern Washington.

Mountain West has enough teams they don't need to expand. They could just add North Dakota State and be a solid conference. Possibly Texas State.

Buffalo and Toledo possible AAC adds. If you replace Houston with North Texas that is almost an even trade in terms of size of school and placement. Buffalo would be a pretty good replacement for Cincinnati and UTSA or Texas State or Toledo could take the place of USF. It will be a step down but it would hold. They have flirted with Air Force so may get them.

I know. The Big 12 is just no longer relevant. All the schools worth a damn will end up in one of the other four conferences. It’ll all just shift around until we’re basically back to where we were, with a power 4 instead of a power 5, and the Big 12 will no longer be considered a power conference.

This is basically gonna be like what happened with the Big East. Key players (in this case Texas and OU) leave, they add bullshit schools, and anyone else worth a damn that’s remaining will bolt.

We’ve been talking “four power conferences” for years and this is that happening right before our eyes. Legacy Big 12 schools will disperse to the other four conferences and the big 12 will no longer be considered a power conference. Anchored by UCF and Colorado State I mean give me a break

They would all like to go somewhere. The problem is there is nowhere to go. They are not wanted. This is how the remainders are organizing themselves. I don't know what this adds but if ESPN will pay you more money, go for it.

I guess if you are ESPN, you might think that if you kill two conferences, you do not have to pay out as much as if you just pay the ones you want in the Big 12.

The Big 12 will dissolve. It has already had its meat(UT and OU) consumed by the SEC, now what is left is really not feasible to serve. Adding teams to the Big 12 just weakens all remaining conferences. The Big 12 is already unwatchable.

A conference that is expanding is not dissolving. These are very valuable franchises.

There used to be a SWC, a Big 8, and a Big East conference. Those were valuable franchises too.

Yes, they all got upgraded and are still making millions. If they put a line on it and put it on ESPN, people will watch.

It is a joke. You can add 12 teams to that conference and they are still a joke. Iowa State leading the way? Please.

NOT ONE of these teams will ever sniff a playoff unless they expand it to 12. That's a shitty list of football teams. Quantity over quality does not work in CFB.

What difference does that make? Do you think these schools are just going to call it quits?

So you don't like it. As soon as you bet one of the games they broadcast on Thursday night, you will be tuned in. They have you beat.

I can see the point of this move now because BYU is now the top program in the conference from a money making point of view so they have to try to protect BYU and if you add these teams it makes BYU happy. Maybe it is not that attractive but it keeps your conference together going forward and USF gives West Virginia a team to play and they are less likely to get taken out. So these teams have some real travel issues and this solves that problem.

It is not very sexy but it works. We keep making the money.

who cares about sniffing a playoff? that is not the goal of the majority of teams in the country when they start the season. i couldn't care less if ostate is even considered for a playoff spot. i watch them and go to games to see them compete in our conference and maybe get a big bowl game. they make a ton of money for the other sports programs at the school who can't support themselves...we have a blast at the games...and kids get to go to school who would not have otherwise had the chance. espn is destroying cfb a little at a time. if it gets to the power 4 where everything is just about a playoff spot and endorsements you know what you will have?...the nfl. congrats on that i guess but it will destroy everything that is good about college sports over time.

People want to rag on the conference because it sucks. Yeah, it sucks. But they can't do anything about it. They are trying to put something together and get some money from ESPN and they will have some Top 25 teams and make the playoffs and upset some of the Big 3 and laugh and say they as just as good.

We are still making millions and still playing the games.

    Fukk the Big 12

They were so asshurt that OU and Texas left them in shambles. Talked about aticking together and unity. Then they go out and destroy other conferences by poaching from them.

Sure, its not ez to compete against the ESPN contracts but get creative, figure it out. Or die trying.

That is what they are doing and most likely getting an ESPN contract. It's funny that you think the Big 12 had it coming but the other conferences are getting poached.
