FanDuel sportsbook is paying out bets from people who picked Alabama to win the college football national championship -- over a month before the game will be played.
The company announced Friday night it is treating the top-ranked Crimson Tide as the winners already, and paid out single-game bets to customers' online or mobile accounts. Those who made bets in person can bring their winning slips to the location where they bet to be paid.
Alabama also is being marked as a winner on parlay bets that included the necessity of it winning the title.
FanDuel says the move could cost it $400,000. Should Alabama not win the national championship, FanDuel will pay out bets on whichever team wins the title.
It says it wants to reward customers for betting on a team with odds that were so lopsided it was difficult to make money.
"It has been a dominant season for the Crimson Tide and our traders have seen enough," the company said in a statement Friday night.
The payout involved all future bets on Alabama to win it all that were made before 5 p.m. ET Friday. The Tide opened at nearly 2-to-1 odds before the season started, or plus 195, meaning a $100 bet would return $195.

Costs them $40,000 on straight futures and could cost them $400,000 eventually when adding in parlays that included Alabama futures (apparently those can be parlayed at FanDuel).

funny quote here, basically says " Merry Christmas you squares, please continue to wager with us moving forward"

"It's a way to reward our customers for betting on Alabama when the odds were really hard to make any money doing it," said FanDuel spokesman Kevin Hennessy.

Oh gawd. Look at the language there.

Explaining the most basic things, talking to non-bettors.

These sort of advertorials about betting, specifically targeting non-bettors, might get a UK or Aussie book into hot water. Wonder how this will pan out in US. I suspect it is going to be a lot more liberal there. Not sure if that will be good or not for bettors yet though.

But its season has been so dominating that Alabama is now listed at minus-280, meaning a gambler would have to put up $280 of his or her own money in a bet to win $100 on Alabama.
-280 is so lopsided that is difficult to make money? Enough to give away the winner?

    Really?

PaddyPower are notorious for jinxing certs by paying out early for publicity.

Tiger Woods in the Masters one year. 4 or 5 years ago ManU was way ahead in the EPL with about 6 games to go, PP pay out and they went on to lose just about every game and missed it. There's at least a couple more famous ones like that by them.

I bet if you asked most non bettors what an Asian handicap means they would think you were being a bigot.

Part of the strategy would normally to be to get people to do just that.

Because so many will think that way, they will offer Bama at shitty odds and hedge every re-bet off for a guaranteed profit.

I haven't checked but I bet that's the case on FanDuel.

    Fanduel pays out on Alabama

    https://newsroom.fanduel.com/2018/11...ionship-early/

Wonder if anybody with inside info loaded up on Alabama before the announcement? Seriously though, great gimmick. Good to see Fanduel giving money back to the players.

That and they will win it .
I don't expect Tua back in 2 weeks personally , Hurts just had the same procedure , 2 weeks after he was barely walking . It took him a full month , 3 weeks plus a bye week yet still not 100% but will be easily by the 29th .
Hurts can and will get his redemption for getting Bama there but Tua getting the glory last year . He's improved drastically being behind Tua and learning to read progressions , we knew he could run , now he can pass .
