This is a great game on Labor Day evening, 9/6. The game is being played in Landover Md, a "neutral" site, allegedly. This certainly is the marque matchup of the first week. This game will eliminate one team from the BCS Championship game.
This game means everything for Boise State. This is basically their entire season. A win here, and Boise State goes undefeated, once again, for the 3rd year in a row in the regular season. If that happens, can the BCS keep them out of the big game again? The only potential traps are at home against Oregon State, and at Nevada, but Boise State should be able to win those games. Why? Well first, they have their entire starting TEAM coming back, except for one defensive player. That's right. The entire TEAM. The same team that wnet undefeated last year and won the Fiesta Bowl which is where, consequently, the BCS Championship game is being played this year. Boise State is 2-0 at the Fiesta Bowl. Needless to say, if Boise can avoid the injury bug, they are going to be loaded.
Virginia Tech returns 8 starters on an offense that actually scored points last year, something new to Va. Tech. QB Taylor brings a whole new dimention to the offense. His pasing is improving, and he can scramble with the best of them. Va TEch scored 31 or more points in 8 games last season. The defense returns 5 starters. Replacements must be found for DE Worilds who left early, and two others on the front 4, as well as the LB corps and 2 starters in the backfield. Tech gave up 35 points to Alabama, and 28 to Ga. Tech, two of their 3 losses last season.
This is going to be a very interesting game to wager on. It is the only thing going on Monday evening, so the entire wagering world will be playing this game. Va. Tech has lost their last 3 openers, two at "neutral" sites. Their regular season non-con record ATS is 2-7 in the past 3 years. Boise State is 6-4 ATS agains non-con opponents in that same 3 year period. More to the point, during that 3 year period, Va. Tech was 6-3 Straight Up in those 9 games, and Boise State was 9-1 Straight Up in their 10 games. In a game where the line should not be higher than 3 points either way, that is significant. Do not go crazy with the total either. Remember that even though these teams are very high scoring, Boise defeated high scoring Oregon 19-8 last year. Va. Tech had two games in which they scored 16 and 15 points. Their defense gave up 15 points or less 9 times last season. Good Luck with this game.
Next up. Pot Luck.
