Penn State Number Goes Down From -14 To -12 For Iowa Contest

    By Greg Pickel gpickel@pennlive.com
Penn State has survived its non-conference scheduled unbeaten.

Now, it's on to Big Ten play the rest of the way.

This year's conference slate kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at Iowa next Saturday, as head coach James Franklin will take his team on the road for the first time this season to play 3-0 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium.

At BetOnline, the Lions opened as a 14-point favorite, though it was immediately bet down to 12 and stayed there as of 6 p.m. Sunday night.

The Hawkeyes beat North Texas, 31-14, in Week 3, but potentially have a major issue as star tailback Akrum Wadley went out in the first half with a reported ankle injury and never returned, while backup James Butler injured his elbow in the third quarter and also never returned.

No immediate word was available regarding either player's status, but if one or both miss the game, it certainly could make Iowa one-dimensional and put the burden on quarterback Nate Stanley.

"Akrum tried to walk out without an ice bag, so sent him back in for that, but it doesn't look like anything serious," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters on Saturday.

"He just didn't feel real confident in that second half. James, we'll have to see. I don't think it's anything overly -- I will probably know more Tuesday but I'm not overly concerned, but hopefully he will be okay."

Linebacker Josey Jewell continues to be the game changer that he's always been, and he will be in the crosshairs for Penn State's offensive line, but the injury news will be the key item to watch heading into game week.

For Penn State, it will be interesting to see whether end Torrence Brown, corner Amani Oruwariye, and/or guard Brendan Mahon are back in action. It's not a guarantee, but Franklin seemed to think they could suit up for the first conference test.

Being an IA man here, Absolutely take PSU. IA has looked awful in all 3 games it's played. Huge Hawk fan and will be betting PSU, I hope this continues to fall, I would like to get this on 10.

Last year they probably should've lost to Miami oh and did lose to N Dak and yet beat Michigan. All this after a magical season that extended Kirks contract after a rose bowl drubbing. I haven't figured them out yet but I'm watching.

Yes, but Butlers out for 3 weeks. Stanley can't hit anybody more than 10 yards down the field. Pennst should cover. Never know what Captain Kirks been holding back for 1st 3 games.

Penn State's defense isn't great, tough to lay double digits on the road.

A pass game for me. Too many intangibles. Ferentz teams are 10-0 ATS as a dog of more than 6 in this situation. Penn State is 6-0 ATS after scoring 35 or more points. I am rooting for Iowa, but will not make any wagers on this game.

I have cashed 2 straight following the Hawkeyes... ML vs. Clones and +21 on North Texas... This game will be a reality check for Hawk Fans... They don't sneak a big upset until OSU later this year. I am watching the line, but have little doubt that PSU covers regardless.

The were very lucky to win VS Iowa st....I pushed....they honestly just don't look great....a team like PSU could demoralize them early...

Little concerning that they did not dominate more at home vs pitt, especially after seeing what oklahoma st did to them.

Lest we forget what happens when Iowa gets hyped in a big game... Check the Stanford Rose Bowl tape... Mind you, Iowa lost to a FCS team (NDSU) at home last year with a senior qb and a better Defense. Now we are supposed to believe they can hang with a team favored to win the B10 outright...
