Careful of the Notre Dame trap this week...

Played a tough, physical team in Stanford last week and have a look ahead to Florida State next week. North Carolina may not be great but they are sandwiched in between. Two years ago Notre Dame was in a similar scenario beating Stanford but had Oklahoma in 2 weeks instead of FSU and the sandwich game was BYU at home.....and they very nearly were upset.

Just a word to the wise...

Yeah, but that BYU team you speak of was actually pretty good. They may have given Notre Dame fits any week of the year. This UNC squad, on the other hand, has been awful thus far. But your point is valid nonetheless... Classic sandwich game against a wounded animal. Might not be the greatest spot to back the Irish. Plus, they traditionally don't fair well as heavy favorites.

Exactly. Not saying they'll lose, but I definitely wouldn't back them.

Except, you know, BYU was actually a physical football team.

UNC is one of the softest teams in the p5, so this thread is near meaningless

how does this have anything remotely to do with this being a sandwich game?

BYU was not a sandwich game for ND, and it never is (obviously)

I wouldn't touch this one. If ND does come out flat UNC can score 21-28 points on them. It's not like they can't score. UNC scored nearly 40 points on a very good Clemson defense at Clemson.

BYU was also an unranked football team that finished 7-5 in a mid-major conference. Let's not make them out to be world beaters here.

Listen, I'm not saying Notre Dame's not going to whoop them. I actually think this Notre Dame team is a better team than 2 years ago. Much better offense...better special teams...and while the defense isn't better, it's still solid. But -17 looks too inviting and I'm just throwing caution to the wind. NC's a better team than they've shown. Any look ahead situation is dangerous...it's why I wouldn't touch FSU, either. The sandwich is even more dangerous, though, than the look ahead. This is where coaching and player focus is really tested.

North Carolina can defend against the pass. On paper Notre dame should win by 3 TD. If the Tar Heels can defend enough 3 down pass plays this could be close. My guesstimate Irish win by 11 points.

Agree. Notre Dame has not started well in any of their games this year. They are the worst among all top-25 teams in first quarter scoring. However, they are among the best when it comes to third quarter point differential. I like playing UNC and the first half under here, and then maybe ND in the 2nd half.

Bottom Line: Notre Dame 5-0 S/U. 4-1 ATS. North Carolina 2-3 S/U, 0-4 ATS. It is that simple.

And just as I suspected, Notre Dame looks absolutely dead. Sandwich games are dangerous...look at UCLA last week.
