"Usually I’d question the motivation of a team preparing to face an opponent that it easily handled in last season’s bowl finale, but you have to throw that out the window with the urgency of new coaches implementing new systems. We saw the same scenario play out this weekend at the Coliseum as SC under Sark easily handled Fresno State, 52-13.

These teams are closer in class, but you have to like the idea of a Bobby Petrino inheriting a team that was seasoned in defense for the last few years under Charlie Strong. Although ‘Ville only returns four starters on defense, they should have enough of a Strong’s toughness left over to make scoring drives a tenuous process for Duke Johnson and a veteran Miami offensive line. It’ll be a year or so before new DC Todd Grantham has them confused and soft again.
I like Golden, but he’s on the road with a true frosh QB (Brad Kaaya), while redshirt soph Will Gardner had a year as Teddy Bridgewater’s understudy and looked phenomenal in the spring game. Emerging from the specter of the NCAA investigation, Miami has momentum in the program and they’ll have a chance to feast on some of the more confused ACC programs later in the year.

But Petrino is one of a handful of coaches you can rely on for driven, polished performances—and he’s still salty with a chip on his shoulder. Is it only 3 years ago that he had Arkansas ranked No.3 in the country, toe-to-toe with an undefeated LSU team in Baton Rouge before Tyrann Mathieu took over the game?
