Interesting piece of business in South Florida. Seems back in late 2007, early 2008.... things start to come out about the goings on in the Miami Football Program. The NCAA hears about these items through some disgruntled ex player who never gets drafted and feels slighted by the University, or by another program, Hell pick your own reason. Unbelievably enough ,it seems that all of this is going on out in the open and with little if any discretion Anyway, there seems to be enough smoke that the NCAA feels compelled to get involved. Word is blatant malfeasance with regard to money, cars, jewelry, parties, no show jobs, all things fun stuff in Collegiate Sports Right??? The NCAA, in their infinite wisdom decides to engage in a full scale investigation into these allegations. Then, most of the investigation points to a former booster named Nevin Shapiro, who seems to be the center of all the allegations. The NCAA's investigative team gathers much of their case in the usual fashion, then decides they need Shapiro's statement to move forward. This becomes a bit difficult because at this time Shapiro is doing a 20 year stretch in prison for a ponzi scheme. Yet the investigators feel its necessary to enter into an agreement with his attorney to, I guess, nail down their case. Ultimately, the agreement they made, corrupts roughly 30 percent of the NCAA's case, that can no longer be used as evidence. You simply can't make this stuff up. To the University's credit, they were proactive by a self imposed 2 year ban on bowl games, and 1 year ban on a ACC championship game, but in the end, they got off easy. Another bang up job by the NCAA. The final result of all this madness is a 9 scholarship reduction over three years.... BIG DEAL!! Ask the programs of USC and Ohio State if this was a fair sanction. Once again, the NCAA proves to be inept in its enforcement responsibilities. Some things never change...
