“Insidious: Chapter 2” features the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. The movie, which derives themes from classics including “Poltergeist,” “The Exorcist” and “The Shining,” opened after mixed reviews last week.The movie is “a messy brew that is a bit too slack to get all the way to actually being good,” wrote Mark Olsen in the Los Angeles Times.’’Among returning films, Universal Pictures’ “Riddick,” the science fiction film starring Vin Diesel, fell to third place from first with $6.8 million. The movie, the third in the franchise, stars Diesel as a bounty hunter, left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, who finds himself up against an alien race of predators.Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne return as Josh and Renai Lambert, well-meaning parents who moved into a new home after fearing their last one was haunted. Their eldest son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), has recovered from a mysterious coma (a reference to the first film), but he’s still plagued by nightmares. He doesn’t just see dead people; they want something from him. When the frights become too much for Renai, the family decides to stay with grandma for a while.The film is also self-aware and self-referential, rewarding viewers of the original film with additional explanations in the sequel. And, like its predecessor, “Chapter 2” leaves open the possibility of more to come.
