he could have had the ball in his other hand first or cross before flipping it.

Notice the angles, view arm, torso and the rest of the man already across the goal line.
Nothing like being up +3 whilst holding your opponent to zero downs. Bodes well for any potential bowl game - get blown out yet dominating the yardage.
