Takanori Gomi is +135 against Clay Guida

There is good value in Gomi as well.

His last fight demonstrated that the "Fireball Kid" still has some fire in his fists with his KO of Tyson Griffin.

Granted, I Do see this fight going like many Guida fights do...Clay Guida taking down his opponent and controlling him with sloppy Ground N Pound for 3 straight rounds on way to a UD.

What many people forget about Gomi is that his background is grappling and he himself is an accomplished wrestler.

If Gomi can neutralize Guida's grappling he has a good chance at pulling this off.

    Your thoughts?

Again, you might not get much feedback as Poppa C has already created a thread recommending Gomi!...

I think we should wait and watch the lines, I had my head far up my own ass and assumed that the line would naturally move against us here. I believe now that I was completely off and that Guida is going to be the popular side of this fight. Sure Gomi was wildly popular in pride days, but that was ages ago (seemingly) and I think I'm overvaluing the amount of diehards willing to bet.

I believe that we might be able to get more out of this line. Maybe +160 or so, plus I kind of think it might be worth it to see what he looks like come weigh ins. I feel really good about this style match up, so even at even money I think its a great bet. If he looks like shit at the weigh ins I would certainly reconsider.

I think it's good value for Gomi. I think Gomi will win this fight. It should be close though and he's going to struggle with Clay's takedowns.

Gomi was dominated by Florian and caught Griffin with one punch. I'm not sure he has enough left to take out a conditioned Guida.

I like Guida to grind out the UD, but Gomi is perfectly capable of outboxing him or catching him flush at anytime. I side w/ Guida because he has a steel chin, the cardio advantage, and more octagon experience. I'm staying away, but would put $ on Gomi at anything better than +150.

Add Guida vs Griffin to the list. Guida has been involved in three fights of the night, one of which won fight of the year in 2009. Go back to sherdog, trolls.

Guida is one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC. Sure, he does prefer to be on the ground, but he is insanely active there. Someone not being a striker does not mean that they are boring

Gomi has one of the best chins in the sport though and is probably the superior wrestler of the 2, having started out in combat wrestling and developing striking later. He's only really had problems with longer guys and slick top position jj players. Also Gomi does really well against wrestlers and undersized 55s which describes Guida. I think this fight is free money pretty much, but you never do know with Gomi even though he's looked to be in good shape.

not buying this for a second...that would make this the wager of the century.........

to win this, gomi needs to stay on his feet and use his striking ability....he`s not out-grappling guida...

Guida is beast. He is one of the last of all his kind and there may be no others after him. Look for Guida to use his unique skills and LNP abilities to secure a decision win.

There won't be another 7-5 fighter in the UFC

    wat?

I must have missed the fight where Guida beat a fighter anywhere within sniffing distance of the upper echelon.

but let me add this here edit in: if you are listing Guida's mane as a rare talent, then hell yes! He is truly one of a kind

Carpenter is the pick here. Unfortunately UFC success isn't politically correct, neither is MMA (see Wanderlei's record against various nationalities), in the Octagon most of that has to do with an inability to adjust from PRIDE, or non-octagonal rings...Until I see that change, or Gomi reverts to his real Fireball days, I can't see how he leaves with a win. When he was signing with UFC prior to his fight with KenFlo, he was in my opinion signed to put KenFlo over and maintain his status as a top guy with a win over a name, and kept away from Scott Coker and Strikefarce. Tyson Griffin beats Gomi 9 times out of 10, and unless this is that one time again, I can't see Gomi taking out Guida.

    Maybe Jason Guida.

one thing I don't like about Gomi is his tendency to over commit on his hay-makers, throws a lot of his punches from his knees, leaving himself off balance against take down attempts( too much telegraphed movement imo). Perfect example would be his fight back in Bushido 10 against Marcus Aurelio. First hook that Gomi came in with, Marcus shot underneath and landed an easy take down...tapped him out seconds later with an arm triangle choke.

Guida loves that same choke as well, wouldn't surprise me if he sinks it in late. he was fishing for it against dos anjos and tapped Gugerty with it.

also, Tyson Griffen loves standing in the pocket and exchanging, Guida more of a guy who like to fire off combinations and back out(occasionally makes the mistake of exchanging but not as much in his recent fights). he may not be very effective with it, but it's a lot better strategy against a striker like Gomi.

Good points Ill, Guida does seem to always look for the arm-triangle and one of the reasons I'll be puttin small play on him gettin Sub of the Night. Judging from what Jackson, Clay, and Jason Guida have said in an article on Sherdog, Clay does not plan on standing for too long with Gomi as they respect his power too much.

Gomi then went on to learn freestyle wrestling and catch wrestling at Kiguchi Dojo and competed in many wrestling tournaments throughout Japan, the pinnacle of his grappling career being his four All Japan Combat Wrestling championships, in which he defeated a number of the nation's top grapplers, future opponent Mitsuhiro Ishida amongst them.
    [yt]wNHNIvHVx3M[/yt]

just because somebody is white and shoots a lot doesn't mean they have good wrestling. nice job showing off your knowledge of gomi though

Ishida would mop up Guida in wrestling and probably wrestlefuck him in MMA too, and he's been beaten in both by Gomi
