Note to self: DO NOT walk in road at night with dark clothes on. Better yet, DO NOT walk in road at all.

    Sad news.

    Great boxer. Olympic gold medalist.

A lot of people thought he beat DeLaHoya in 1997. Totally outboxed him, but the undefeated Golden Boy got the Vegas decision.

Great defensive boxer but he had no punch at all. His fights were rather boring. RIP.

    Drunk driver probably.

That would suck getting hit by a car and dying that way. Too many stupid drunk or texting drivers on the road these days...

I got rear ended in my Lexus the other day, no real damage, just the rear bumper cracked a little bit, scuff marks to. Young girl texting not paying attention just slammed right into me in traffic. I let it go. Her little Honda took some front end damage though.

Doesn't look like drugs or alcohol or texting were involved at all.

I don’t really know the story so maybe ya right but not real wise to be walking in middle of road!! I’ve seen dumb fukks trying to cross interstates instead of walk the extra mile up to the walkway bridge. Tough to dodge cars going 70-80 mph!

You're either too young or don't follow boxing. Whitaker won titles in 4 weight classes. He was the Welterweight champ for 4 straight years. Quick hands, quick feet, defensive mighty might. He had zero power as a Welterweight but was fun to watch flash around the ring. Him and Dela Hoya was poised to fight in what was promoted as the fight of the decade. Dela Hoya beat Cesar Chavez but Whitaker had a mandatory challenge against a Cuban fighter and was losing the fight until Whitaker knocked the kid out in the 11th to setup the super fight with Dela Hoya. That was like the only time I saw Whitaker throw with knockout power.

I saw him fight Dela Hoya in Vegas. Funny story. I used to get good seats through a friend of mine. Well a group of us were going and another friend told me not to worry about it, that he had the seats. We get there and I shit you not, we are in the 2nd to last row (Thomas and Mack center). I'm talking way the fukk back. I tell people to this day, I don't know who the fukk won that fight because I was too damn far away. A couple of friends (who had money on Sweet Pea) thought Whitaker won the fight. I thought he out punched Dela Hoya but he was throwing pitty patt soft as shit jabs while Dela Hoya was throwing much harder punches.

We end up seeing Whitaker in the casino while we were playing blackjack (I think it was MGM but it could have been Mandalay)? He is short as shit. I'm talking little kid short. One of my friends shouted out something about him being short as hell and sorry in the ring. Whitaker turns around at us... "who said that, who said that, who said that"? one of the other guys said, "move on little kid", and we all laughed. Whitaker was pissed like he wanted to fight someone but we were all laughing because he looked like a kid. Next I know, he was popped for cocaine and suspended for a couple of years. He came back to fight Tito Trinidad and just like the Dela Hoya fight, he landed more shots but still lost in a close decision.

Whitaker was kinda like Mayweather. Ran around the ring, pitty pat, out punching guys but not very exciting to watch. I think Vegas judges didn't appreciate his style which is why they gave him those close defeats. I think he only lost those 2 close bouts. He was always considered with Roy Jones as one of the best pound for pound but those 2 bouts sealed his legacy. He showed a lot of heart in that setup fight to Dela Hoya and the guy tried his best to put on a show. He just didn't have a huge punch.

    RIP

I guess I didn't follow boxing. Only boxers I know.... Mike Tyson. Sugar Ray Leonard. Muhammad Ali. Joe Louis. Evander Holyfield. George Foreman... and his grill. That's about it.

He was a boxer and a pretty damn good one.. I remember watching his fights. He was fast and elusive, reminded me a bit like Roy Jones Jr..

TBH Whitaker was a boring watch, so I could easily see how most people pretty much ignored that division when he was champ. I appreciate a defensive show without a lot of heavy hitting. I appreciated Mayweather's style which was also boring for most people. This was an era that boxing really lost a lot of viewers. There really wasn't any huge characters after Tyson that moved the sport. Too many guys with no punching power. The casual viewer wants to see knockouts and boxing really had some boring champions in the early 2000's. Hopefully, some of the new up and coming boxers will infuse some excitement back into the sport because I used to love going to the fights. Best events in all of sports was a weekend in Vegas to watch the show around a Tyson fight. Dela Hoya was a close second.
