    Event Background

UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will be held on December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[1]

A UFC Featherweight Championship bout between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega is expected to serve as the event headliner.[2] The fight was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 226, but Holloway pulled out due to "concussion like symptoms".[3]

In the co-headlining slot, a bout for the vacant UFC Women's Flyweight Championship between former UFC Women's Strawweight Champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk and former UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship challenger Valentina Shevchenko was expected to take place. If victorious, Jędrzejczyk would become the first woman to win titles in different divisions.[4] They met previously in amateur muay thai and kickboxing, with Shevchenko winning all three encounters.[5] However on October 2, the UFC announced that Shevchenko would face Sijara Eubanks at UFC 230 instead, as that event was in need of a headliner.[6] The fight between Shevchenko and Jędrzejczyk was put back together a week later though, as a fight between then UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis wound up filling the headlining slot at UFC 230.[7]

A lightweight bout between Gilbert Burns and Olivier Aubin-Mercier was previously scheduled to take place in February 2018 at UFC on Fox: Emmett vs. Stephens. However, Burns was pulled from the pairing during the week leading up to the event after medical officials deemed that it was unsafe for Burns to cut the necessary weight for the 156-pound limit.[8] The fight has been rescheduled for this event.[9]

A middleweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 heavyweight winner Antônio Carlos Júnior and The Ultimate Fighter: Nations middleweight winner Elias Theodorou was initially scheduled to take place at UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Anders. However, Júnior pulled out on August 28 due to injury.[10] The pairing was then rescheduled for this event.[11] In turn, on September 13, it was reported that Júnior was forced to withdraw as a surgery is required to treat the injury that caused the first cancellation of this bout.[12] On October 1, it was reported that Eryk Anders would replace him.[13]

A light heavyweight bout between Jimi Manuwa and Thiago Santos was expected to headline UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Anders, but the bout was scrapped due to an injury suffered by Manuwa.[14] The pairing is now expected to take place at this event.[13]

A featherweight bout between Renato Moicano and Mirsad Bektić was expected to take place at the event. However, Bektic was forced out of the bout due to an undisclosed injury on November 15.[15] In turn, Moicano is not expected to compete and instead will serve as a "replacement" option in the event that one of the headlining participants is unable to fight at the event.[16]

John Makdessi was expected to face Carlos Diego Ferreira at the event. However, Makdessi pulled out of the fight on November 28 and was replaced by returning veteran Jesse Ronson.[17]

Obviously the thread starter doesn't know how to edit his post so he started a 2nd one, this time he added the card and a little message to you. I thought I chose the right one when I posted the odds and that wiki background info. Paper has a reply after me...but then dumbass JIBBBY bumps the older thread which only contained the main-event poster and had no replies.

IDK what his problem is. Now the ball got rolling in the wrong thread imo. Fukk's sake Jibbby! You blind?

Looks like Locky is getting burned out on Event thread start ups lately.. I vote Thrilla starts them with every event as he finds the odds website via copy and paste... Thrilla is always around these MMA threads daily too.

    Agreed Dem..

I'm too busy capping other games in all sports to start these event threads.. I can't find the time for this..

I can barely post pending then recap after at times.. I lose interest.. It's all good though..

Lol thread.. I was being honest though..
I do think I could kick Chuck Liddel's ass at 50 years old today from what I saw.. No lie.. I move much better then him, can still bang and hit like a truck.. I out weigh him by 30 pounds also.. I've never been KO'd in my life.. No glass jaw here but it hasn't been tested in 15 years....

Did get clocked and saw stars one time, but wasn't rocked and that happened in my early 30's sparring. Head kick. Felt like I got hit in the head with a baseball bat.. Only time I got KO'd was when I was drunk and slammed my head falling face first off stairs into cement. I was tripped too.. Wasn't sloppy drunk.. I lost that battle.. Worst concuss ever!!! I was fine until I got home that night. Room was spinning for hours and I was sober then also..

Guys I run, I bike, and lift weights almost every day.. I've done that since I was 20 years old, no lie.. I drink protein shakes daily and eat perfect.. Truth.. Give me a million dollars I'd fight Chucky with a 6 week training camp no problem and I'd bet on myself.. Would have to be open catch weight as I'm a 240lb guy, might be able to cut to 230 but that's it...

Just being honest.. I'm a lover today, got no more fight in me.. Peace and love from this big guy..

Shiat. Ever since me Army stint came to an end, I picked my smoking habit back up, eat a stouffers lasagna and add a half pound bag o’ greasy mozzarella to it 4-5 times a week, now drink on a daily basis, instead of just the weekends, course any given fight night will see the destruction of about 5-6 redbull’n’vodkas...I figure I got about 3-5 yrs left...

But for a million bucks against chuck? I think anyone would. That was just awful, those punches were like granny slow, I mean he said he was so stoked and training so hard...maybe on crumpling into a boneless heap on the floor but my god, and the guy says he ain’t done!
That bein said I think I’m gonna roll on Holloway here in rounds 3,4, and 5. If Ortega gets him down, well that will probably seal the deal. I think Max is too smart to get wrapped up while standing. Ortega has some power, but Max should be the better striker, they got for he same reach, and Max is taller. He stays outside for 2-3 rounds, wears and rips on Ortega, then should be able to turn it on in the later rounds. The finish isn’t gonna be the easiest for Max but I think it is definitely possible, course he’d be smart to decision him, but he might wanna make a statement.

Sorry to have replied to both.. But what do you guys think about Gunnar Nelson VS Alex Olivera?

Grappling skills cancel out and Gunner by TKO? Or could go all 3 in entertaining affair with lots of scrambles?

Well, I probably cannot provide any fantastic reasoning really to bet her at those odds, now that you make me ask myself that question. Do I think Shev wins, Yes I do, but -340 is like a 77% implied probability, and while I might think Shev wins 4/5 fights between them, there are probably better spots to get my $ down.

So maybe no straight action on Valentina for me. I do already have her as the last leg on two tickets to win about $450 so I already have some exposure.

Elias Theodorou has to be the most boring fighter in the UFC today.. I can't believe he hasn't been cut yet..

He'll probably stick and move and stay just out of dangers way to win another boring decision against Eryk Anders..http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Elias-Theodorou-81765

Red Bull (and energy drinks in general) are actually far worse for your health than alcohol.

    Results of a recent study:

A new study just gave people some solid evidence suggesting that the consumption of just one regular energy drink is capable of increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke in 90 minutes. The new study will be presented on November 12 at the meeting of the American Heart Association in Chicago.

Researchers note that energy drinks make blood vessels narrower, potentially restricting the flow of blood throughout the body and to vital organs.

The endothelial function of participants was tested, and then each of them proceeded to drink a 24 ounce (very large) energy drink, before receiving another test of the bodily process an hour and a half later.

Within just 90 minutes, the internal diameter of those blood vessels had on average been decreased by almost half. This protective cellular lining of blood vessels was made thinner, almost immediately.

A University of Waterloo study from Ontario, Canada found that 55% of people aged 12 to 24 surveyed reported suffering various conditions such as chest pains, vomiting, even seizures after consuming energy drinks.

People might not think it with Oliveira being from brazil, the birthplace of BJJ, his ground game could be suspect with how easily Cerrone submitted him awhile ago. Oliveira shows constant improvement in his game, it shouldn't be too hard for him to find good guys to roll with assuming its not a psychological thing.

Conor McGregor, Artem Lobov and Gunnar Nelson as teammates, all developed cardio issues around the same time. Gunnar Nelson in his fight with Demian Maia, Conor with his Nate Diaz fight and Artem after his stint on the ultimate fighter. Gunnar's chin is also suspect in addition to his cardio. Although it should be mentioned Santiago Ponzinibbio might have poked Gunnar Nelson in the eye, then grabbed Gunnar Nelson's shorts to keep him from running away. Then Ponzinibbio unloaded on Gunnar Nelson when he was trapped against the fence. All while Nelson might not have been able to see too well. Not the most legit KO/TKO.

Oliveira should be the favorite. Not certain if Gunnar Nelson is still training out of SBG Ireland but all of their guys have looked terrible of late.

    @ 7:02

Brian Ortega could have that low testosterone "dad bod" steroid users develop when they come off steroids.

There are certain foods a person can eat to naturally raise their test levels.

There is a myth some foods like soy can decrease testosterone levels in the body hence "soy boys". Etc.

You might think that pro athletes would be aware of this basic info but I suspect some of them don't know.

I can only hope there is a line on this.
