Floyd knows how to adapt to any boxer as well as anyone whose ever played the sport. While It was kind of weird how the referee looked at Connor the whole time during the introduction, you could tell that he ended up gaining respect from a lot of people for his performance including the referee. See his congratulatory nature that exuding respect for Connor after the fight if you don't believe it. And that whole stare down thing in the beginning could also easily be justified as explaining shit to someone whose not a professional boxer, or to someone whose English can be hard to understand at times, therefore, the ref migjtnhabe thoght he needed to clearly articulate what he was saying because the reverse could be true when thick Celtic accents listen to us. The fight was inspiring and damn good.
The Mcnichols (sp) arena days of the UFC which were basically gladiator battles serving to provide severe brain damage and other injuries and boxing, are two very different things. If you couldn't tell that Connor was toast then I think your deluding yourself because you probably just wanted to see him get slaughtered UFC style. Bot that's not boxing. Boxing isn't about accessive violence. It's a lot more artistic than most people realize and that's why it's lost its popularity. Americans don't really like art anymore. That referee has seen enough fights to know when it's a wrap.
