Rovell calls out White on UFC numbers

ESPN Business Reporter and UFC head Dana White went back and forth on twitter on the state of UFC business. The UFC drew the scrutiny of ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell. If you didn’t know, Rovell covers the business of sports and is as active on twitter as Dana White. Rovell sent a tweet out the following tweet after UFC 159.

UFC is starting to lose a little bit of its edge. Might need to have fewer events. Know guy who paid $50 for a $553 face seat tonight.

This drew the ire of UFC fans, media and eventually got back to Dana White. And in usual form, he escalates the criticism to make it personal.

Rovell didn’t seem pleased about the “ESPN” remark and defended his reason for inquiry.

On Wednesday, three days after the initial back and forth, Rovell received his request. It appears to either be a cut and paste of a Fuel TV press release, a hastily put together word document and/or both. You can click on the pic to see it close up. As you can read, White tells Rovell that Zuffa is a private company.

Prior to receiving the data from White, Rovell ran a poll for his twitter followers. Its something he does periodically to create engagement. The poll asks whether UFC has mainstream potential. As you can read, a little over half don’t think so.

Payout Perspective:
Its an interesting back and forth between a mainstream business reporter and White. Certainly, there are errors on both sides of the conversation. Rovell frames the questions differently. He first states that the UFC has lost its “edge” based on the anecdotal evidence that a friend bought a ticket for substantially less than face value. He then asks about the UFC slowing down financially and would like to see its net profits. White responds over the top. Rovell baits him to provide him data that the UFC is doing better and then White gives him something that can’t be substantiated. Being a reporter, Rovell is upset and White relies on the “private company” safe harbor to protect the UFC from having to release its numbers.
At times, Rovell uses financial information to dampen the mood for fans. For example, when a player drops in the NFL Draft, he’s the first to tweet how much money that player is losing. Still, Rovell is being a journalist here and it would have looked better if White could have just said granted him an interview to talk about it or provided him information that did not look like it was a press release.

Zuffa (UFC) enters the year 525 million in debt - report

Standard and Poor’s February report states that it has maintained Zuffa’s credit rating at “BB” following a $50 million add-on proposed to it’s senior secured term loan, which now has a sum of $525 million.

The issue-level rating on the term loan in ‘BB’, which is the same as the corporate credit rating, with a ’4′ recovery rating (in case of a payment default). The $50M add-on brings the total size of the senior secured credit facility, which includes a $50M revolving credit facility, to $525M. The intent of the additional debt is for Zuffa to use the proceeds in order to repay the outstanding balance on its revolving credit facility.

As always, the ‘BB’ credit rating from Standard & Poor’s reflects the assessment of Zuffa’s business risk profile (‘fair’) and the company’s financial risk profile (“aggressive”).

The following S&P concerns kept Zuffa’s credit rating from being upgraded:

Risk of revenue and EBITDA volatility given the company’s primarily event-driven business model
Vulnerability to changing consumer preferences and susceptibility to variability in discretionary spending
Management’s aggressive financial policy (high level of distributions in recent years & high debt leverage)
Although the UFC has a strong fan-base, in order to maintain their advantage, they need to continue to develop fighters that appeal to the 18-34 demographic.
Preserve current regulatory acceptance of the sport. Fatal injury or change to the rules and regulations governing the sport and legal status could have meaningful impact to the company’s business model and long-term viability.

The concerns stated above are mostly offset by S&P’s belief that Zuffa’s strong EBITDA margin and healthy cash flow conversion rate are sustainable over the near to intermediate term.

It appears that the UFC has dropped ticket prices for their first PPV in Las Vegas in 2014.

UFC 170 will be the first pay-per-view of the year in the UFC's hometown of Las Vegas, and it appears that they are changing things up a bit for this event. The card, which will be headlined by a women's bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Sara McMann, is being run in a smaller arena than most recent PPV's in the city and ticket prices are lower than usual as well.
The last three major PPV's in Vegas were all in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, a usual haunt for big shows. Both UFC 167 and UFC 168 were there, with ticket prices ranging from 100 to 1000 dollars for UFC 168. But this event is being run in the Mandalay Bay Events Center, an arena that holds a smaller crowd and has been recently used for much smaller events like the TUF 18 Finale and for the weigh-ins of big events. The last time it was used for a PPV was way back in November 2012 for UFC 156.
Tickets for UFC 170 start at $50, which is very reasonable for a pay-per-view. They go all the way up to $450 for a cageside seat, which is less than half of the price for the same seat at UFC 167 and UFC 168. It's actually even cheaper than it was for UFC 156 as well - that event had cageside seats for $750, and the cheapest seat in the house was $75.

The Ultimate Fighter 18 TV Ratings Hit New Series Low with Episode 3

The third episode of the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter saw the TV ratings drop off following a week two upswing.
The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate opened to the lowest viewership of any season of the venerable reality series, but Wednesday night’s Episode 3 notched a new low point for the series at 639,000 viewers, according to the Nielsen TV ratings.
TUF 18 opened to 762,000 viewers and then jumped up to 870,000 in its second week, which is slightly out of the norm. Most recent seasons have seen a drop from the premier to the second episode, but this season bucked that trend.

Team Rousey vs. Team Tate marks the second shift move to a new network in the past two years for the reality series. After several years on Spike TV, TUF moved to FX when the UFC signed a broadcasting partnership with the FOX family of networks. This season, the show is on the new FOX Sports 1 (FS1) network.
FS1 took over the slot for FOX’s Speed Channel, rebranding to a 24/7 sports outlet akin to ESPN.

UFC on Fox 9 'Johnson vs. Benavidez 2' overnight ratings are in and they aren't great

Overnight ratings are in for UFC on Fox 9: "Johnson vs. Benavidez 2" and they show a slight improvement from UFC on Fox 8. That's the positive spin. According to TV by the Numbers, the event which featured a rematch for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight title pulled a 1.0 overnight rating.
While the upward movement means that the promotion reached a lot of potential fans, it also needs to be said that this event marks the lowest ratings for a UFC event that had Fox's NFL promotional machine working overtime.
MMA Fighting's Luke Thomas provided some insight on Twitter.

Overnight (read: not final) ratings for UFC on FOX 9 are in: 1.0 rating, 3 share and 2.41 million average viewership.

It should be noted that overnight ratings tend to skew heavily towards the East coast and aren't finalized until Nielsen is able to tabulate the West coast. With popular California-based fighters from Team Alpha Male fighting on the main card, there should be improvement once final numbers come in.
The biggest negative is that the UFC tends to dominate with the 18-49 demographic but last night lost out to kid-friendly Christmas Specials that aired on CBS such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. They did beat out the other networks in the prized demo, but were the only ones with first-run programming.

WWE has more credibility. WWE admits to fixing matchups and choosing who is the best and who sucks. Since they do this they spare the guys the torture of actually fighting and let them "work" matches.

UFC expects guys to lay their lives on the line in a sporting event. Then turn around and fix belts and decide who is good compitetion and who isn't based on personal grudges.

You leave out the fact that they have a 100 million dollar a year deal from fox. That can certainly supplement the money they might be missing from ticket sales and ppv revenue. Add in the fact that they are expanding all around the world. I thinknyour fixating on issues that arent as important like total revenue or how mcuh certain tickets cost. The sport is growing, more fighters on contract than ever. Why the hell would a company like bellator that cant even hold a ppv ever surpass them? Crazy.
