are we really debating "hometown advantage" in sports as if its not a real thing? WTF is going on here?

Of course it exists in sports, but some of that home advantage as it's generally seen, is kind of hard to rub on MMA. I'd guess home advantage in popular team sports would have more to do with playing in really familiar surroundings, as opposed to fans cheering. Not even getting into the rules that generally favor home teams...

But with the location and familiarity, that doesn't really exist in MMA.

The advantage is with the match makers. U rarely see a Brazilian as a dog unless he is fighting another Brazilian.

so fans cheering doesnt play a role you think? what about the 12th man in football...i think the crowd absolutely plays a role in hometown advantage and why wouldnt that rub off in MMA? with an entire stadium cheering your name and rooting you on that has to give you some kind of mental boost and on the flipside, when everyone is booing you and cursing you and wishing you dead, that has to have some kind of negative effect on you mentally or at least somewhat throw you off your game, especially if youre new and not used to that experience...its all about energy...its certainly not the only factor but it has to be at least a small contributing factor to some of the success...at least i think so...as for inflated lines...its all based on public perception...if the public perceives brazilian fighters to have a significant hometown advantage when fighting in brazil (and the public absolutely does for whatever reason), im sure the oddsmakers are factoring that in, therefore resulting in relatively unproven fighters in the UFC opening at 3.5, 4 and 5-1 favorites...i think this is especially true w/ brazilian fighters in brazil being that those fans seem to be some of the, if not the, most loyal fans...

A lot of "thoughts" in this thread. A little sparse on facts, however.

I didn't mean to say that it doesn't play a role, perhaps it came off that way but that's not what I meant. What I did mean however, is that when compared to other sports (something I feel you did in your initial posts when talking about sports in general), it's entirely different.

When i look at this list, from the top of my head, it looks like those fighters that won were either favorites or close to being favorites. I bet if u look at this as a whole, most Brazilian wins are guys who are 3 to 1 or more favs (matchmaking) and id be willing to bet my last dollar that 9 out of ten guys in here will not bet a three to 1 or more favorite unless it is a parlay.

Very inconclusive as I simply posted events I recalled and copied off facebook. There might be errors in there because of wikipedia, and some people missed nationality so some fights might be missing. I'm not checking everything up to a detail either as this is a forum post, not a postgrad work.

Yeah, noticed the losers post while editing, but I thought why not post some ...uh, well sorry to say this but "winnerz". Obviously missing some events or fights, but anyway I think it still kind of shows that this home advantage might be there but for the most part it's just a day at the office beating the fukk out of nonbrazilian people who are outclassed.

You're pretty dumb if you think say... NHL venues do not differ in location and familiarity more than MMA
