    UFC 161 6/15 Rua v Little Nog

    These two faught almost eight yrs ago in Pride with Rua winning a unanimous decision. Little Nog has had more recent success but I like Rua and at -160 am considering this to be a play for this card. I will be handicapping this card in the upcoming week but will not post on SBR unless there is an interest as it seems MMA is not the main sports of wagering interest.

    The problem with people jumping on Shogun is that they don't understand why he won in PRIDE, and why that isn't applicable now.

    Agreed. Pride was different than UFC and fighters still fighting for those days are vastly different. Rua is an enigma and have some hesitation in calling it a recommended play as of yet, I do think it may be the one to look at on this card. Rua and Little Nog both posses knock out ability, this is a fight of aging fighters (in the fight game anyway) with little hope of staying on the UFC main cards let alone the roster with a loss. It has the makings of another decision with Rua narrowly out pointing Little Nog.

    Not quite what I meant, but, that too. Shogun lay all over Nog in their first fight; Nog obliterated him on the feet for the most part, and Shogun took him down and grinded him out. Nog's takedown defence has looked exceptional recently, and I highly doubt we'll see Shogun have any sort of success with such a strategy.

    Shogun has been training with Roach for this fight. I could be wrong -- but I think this implies he plans to try to out-box Nog. I think that's a mistake. I think his best path to victory would of been to focus on Muay Thai style attacks. I think good muay thai usually beats good boxing.

    Personally, I don't think Rua is going to try and take him down too much. At this stage in his career Rua is a one trick pony but I think he has enough to get past Little Nog. Starting to look at Barry v Jordan on this card instead. Thoughts?

    Everyone seems to think this about Shogun, but I don't think anyone is really paying attention to his fights.

    He was outstruck by half a dozen people in PRIDE, and he took all of them down and GNP'd them. He's much more a wrestler than a striker, especially these days.

    I can almost guarantee you he tries to take Nog down. He tried it with Lyoto, Gustafsson, Jones, Nog the first time, Vera, Henderson... almost all of his opponents.

    you know playing the current lines for shogun by decision and nog by decision does not give you the same odds as fight goes distance? not even close.

    Uh, he's probably a lot more relevant than Shogun right now. Chael's last few wins have been against excellent competition, the weakest of his last four has been Brian Stann, who was still top ten at the time.
