Only take liability that you can afford to pay. There were many times I was keen to hold big bets that I was placing for friends through my accounts. Totally square action that you'd love to take - but I strictly would only ever do it up to the amount that I could afford to pay out.

the reason i say this is because it happened to me .... i was the person who couldn't get a play in one
day so i called a buddy of mine to put it in .... ply won i should have been paid 4k .... he told me that something happened
with his computer and wasn't able to put in play ... i told him thats your funk problem ...once you told me I'm good then your stuck

anyhow he ended up stiffing me, and I never got paid ....sure enough from that day on nothing but bad things would happen to him
from losing business, his girl left him and eventually go broke .... I'm telling you, when you don't pay your debts just consider yourself fukd

The problem is that if you don't pay him back what the winnings would have been, he might always wonder if you placed the bet, and kept the overage for yourself. If you take on the responsibility, you have to be prepared to take on the consequences of not fulfilling it. I would tell him what happened, and let him know you are willing to pay back the debt on a payment plan, if needed. Be very apologetic, and maybe he will say not to worry about it. If he doesn't, I would pay up.

Doesnt matter if you were planning on laying it off or not, once you have agreed a price and the bet is confirmed then a bet is a bet regardless of the consequences.

Every now and then a friend or family member will ask me to put a bet on for them, I always quote them the best price available to me and if they want the bet then its on - doesnt mean I always lay off though, sometimes like you I will look at it and decide that I like the other side and decide not to lay it off and cover it myself. Admittedly, we are talking small stakes here, but thats beside the point.

The point is though, you take a bet, you pay a bet...its as simple as that.

Did he know that you had such strong feelings against the bet? I'm pretty sure even if his bet had lost and you showed up telling him you saved him $1k (which i don't think was your plan btw) he'd still be suspicious of ever asking a favour of you again.

Mac, I've never had a lot of success for any real length of time gambling but my one shining moment came 17 years ago. I didn't have an account of my own but had a buddy who had one and I was dabbling around through him during the football season. I was on a particularly bad run and was down about $1000 when I decided to do something stupid for the hell of it and place a 15-Teamer.

I won that parlay, well every team I selected covered their game because in order for me to have won that parlay my friend had to place the bet which he didn't. That was a little over 13K and at the time would have changed my life.

My friend obviously thought I would lose (who wouldn't) and he wasn't trying to save me any money, he was holding my action and had been for a while. He couldn't afford to pay me cause he was a bigger loser than I was and kicking his ass while tempting wouldn't get me my money. I let it go Mac but I'm still bitter about it.

If you can afford it pay the guy. Even if it takes you a while, pay him off. Your intentions may have been good but your word should be better.
