If you've been to the Philippines or been with a Filipino woman you know how they are about money. There's always someone coming out of the woodwork asking for money. For whatever reason, they think that if you have money you should share it because they "don't have the budget," or "have too many problems with money."

Even before he was a Congressman he went everywhere in the PI with armed guards in a convoy of Humvees for fear of being kidnapped. In the past, when he wasn't in camp, he set aside a portion of his day for the less fortunate. Just like in The Godfather, people would wait for him, often in droves, and then get a few minutes of his time to pitch their idea or tell him their sob story. If he's moved he gives them the cash or arranges for them to get what they want or need.

He is a money making machine who countless numbers of people rely on. Roach is smart in that he doesn't get too close to anyone, including Pacquiao and this allows him to wade thru the muck. But this is boxing, there are so many boxers who end up with nothing, Pacquiao needs to be smart because all he need do is look at Tyson and he'll see what can happen to all of those millions.

He's lucky to have Nike and San Miguel. Most fighters never get that sort of sponsorship. If they make a million dollar purse, which is actually rare, they might end up with $200K by the time everyone is paid. So although he might gross 30 million, he might only keep $6-$8 million when all is said and done. And like you said, if you've got someone like Arum bending you over, which he probably is, it's costing you even more. Muhammad Ali was fortunate to get the deal he got for 50 million a few years back. Most are not.

All this may or may not be relevant. It's up to the two men in the ring.

BTW - Arum doesn't run the day to day operations of Top Rank, his son-in-law does. I think once Pacquiao finishes his career, Arum will call it a day and soon after climb in to his coffin.

....How often is it that a guy widely viewed as one of the top 3 boxers in the world is valued at anything better than -700? This line would be in the four figures for PacMan if the oddsmakers saw this as an easy W
