Here is why going pro just makes sense even for US players:

Cost: $200
Tax Savings: $36 (assuming you itemize and 18% effective tax rate)
Actual cost: $164 ($200 minus the $36 you get back on taxes)

I would imagine most live close enough to a Target where a Target GC could be used to purchase something you would buy anyway, and that most here spend at least $60 a year on pizza:

$60 pizza cards = 1,275 points
Total points needed = 4,225 points.

That equates to logging in 353 out of 365 days (12 points/day*353 days = 4,236 points). $160 worth of gift cards leaves you $4 short of break-even. That means, over course of a year, you need to win $4 at the casino, sportsbook, or poker tables (and if you can't be +ev at SBR poker you are not in the right place - the daily's are almost free money).

Stress = during morning deuce surf to sbr = no stress at all. 12 seconds of multi-tasking and done for day.

As for the break even - its at worst a break-even - place in BTP (either top 20 where there is cash or even the weekly point prizes), win in the superbowl squares pools, or any of the other free contests they have and you are way +ev. Add in the trivia where at least 10 points is easy every week, so even if you never rolled the dice and went for 60 or 175, you should be able to get another $20 value out of trivia alone.

All of that doesn't require you to put a single point at risk. If you aren't able to break-even on the gambling meaning you lose money every year, think of it as a much better use of that $200 you would have lost anyway. You can gamble at least $200 worth of points but a good cause got the benefit of that money instead of one of the books.

I was going to talk about that but then you get into time value of return of that money and all. Obviously you clear more than 3,000 points a year just by logging in so you could go pro every year just on that and have free swings at all the contests - but didn't because I didn't want to get into discussion about how long that could take to actually break-even.

I'm not the guey who badgers people about being pro like some others so if it doesn't work for you then you're probably best not doing it. For someone who is here most days then it's a no brainer.

Anyway I piss away a lot more than $200 on dumb shit all the time so even if I lost a few bucks out if the deal I'm not gonna give a shit about it. I just wouldn't spend any more into it.

As mentioned above and previously, goin pro isn't an obvious +EV move anymore; as shown by newguy, you need to put time in to be able to break even. Everyone assigns a different value to their time, but even if you crush poker, it's far from what most people would consider profitable based on time put in.

Same old story: if you enjoy as a hobby and spend time here anyways, going pro makes sense. If not, then not.

Charitable donation needs to be less the fair value received. For example, pay $2000 for a benefit dinner you deduct (2000 - cost of dinner - cost of anything else received). Since you've already shown the fair value received is AT LEAST $160, deducting $200 = tax fraud.
