Front Page MLB Picks (Tue., Aug 19)

Oakland A’s +180 to upset Twins

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 08:10 PM -
By: LT Profits Sports Group | who2beton.com

Slowey has been solid, but does he merit a -200 price tag here? Gallagher has allowed three runs or less in five of six starts in an Oakland uniform, and he has the support of a very good pen.

The Oakland Athletics upset the Minnesota Twins here last night, and we look for the Athletics to repeat that feat at a much better price here tonight.

Now, Sean Gallagher may not have pretty statistics since coming to Oakland, but the bottom line is that he has allowed three earned runs or less in five of his six starts as a member of the Athletics. A repeat performance would do just fine here, considering that the Oakland bullpen ranks fifth in the majors with a 3.47 ERA.

Granted, Kevin Slowey is generally underrated and he has allowed one run or less in three of his last four starts, but we are just not convinced that he deserves to be a -200 favorite over anyone just yet at this point of his career. In fact, the biggest favorite that he has been in any game this season was -164 vs. the Cleveland Indians, and he lost that contest by a 5-1 count.

We will go for the value play here with Oakland at this price.

    Free Pick: Athletics +180

Detroit Tigers -112 slug their way past Texas Rangers

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 08:05 PM -
    By: Vernon Croy | 10starpicks.com

Detroit is a perfect 5-0 in their last five meetings with Texas. That mark should improve to 6-0 after Tuesday when the Tigers look to bash their way past the Rangers.

Detroit has the superior pitcher on the mound with Armando Galarraga (11-4, 3.11 ERA) who will be looking for his fifth-straight win while Texas' Vicente Padilla (12-6, 4.85) has struggled over his last three starts with an ERA of 6.88.

Galarraga has pitched solid on the road this season with an ERA of just 2.48 while allowing just 56 hits over 76.1 innings, and I look for him to have a lot of success against this Rangers lineup that has not faced him before. Padilla got lit up by the Tigers in his only start against them this season allowing eight hits and seven earned runs over just three innings, including three home runs. I look for the Tigers to hit Padilla hard again tonight and Detroit has owned Texas with a perfect 3-0 record against them this season and a perfect 5-0 record over their last five meetings.

The Rangers' opponents are hitting 325 against them over their last seven games while averaging 8.3 RPG and I look for the Tigers' bats to come alive tonight in Arlington. Take Detroit for Tuesday.

    Free Pick: Tigers -112

San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks Over 9½

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 09:40 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

Look for the scoreboard to light up out in the desert Tuesday night when Arizona hosts San Diego. Play the Over at Chase Field as the Padres meet the Diamondbacks.

The Over is 5-1 in the San Diego Padres' last six road games vs. a team with a winning record and 4-1-1 in the Padres' last six road games overall. San Diego has played the Over in three of Josh Banks' last four starts. Over his last three starts, his ERA is 6.06.

The Over is 5-1 in Arizona's last six home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 5-2 in their last seven games following a loss. The Over is 6-1 in Doug Davis' last seven7 starts and 9-3 in his last 12 starts vs. a team with a losing record. Davis has an ERA of 12.27 over his last three starts. Play the Over.

    Free Pick: Padres-Diamondbacks Over 9½ (-105)

Play Texas Rangers & Detroit Tigers Under 11

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 08:05 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

The Rangers are without their sparkplug Ian Kinsler and have never faced Tigers rookie hurler Armando Galarraga. That adds up to an under when Texas hosts Detroit.

Our Tuesday night MLB selection is on the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers remaining under the total in the Lone Star State.

Detroit's 26-year-old right-handed starter Armando Galarraga has not just tossed his hat into the ring for AL Rookie of the Year honors, he has thrown it in with authority. With the recent injury to Tampa 3B Evan Longoria, Galarraga may now have put himself into the lead, even though he is a pitcher and this award seems to favor hitters.

This is Galarraga's first ever start vs. the Rangers and he may have a little extra incentive tonight because Texas is the team which traded him to Detroit during the offseason. He has been very good on the road this season, going 7-2 with a 2.72 ERA away from Comerica Park.

The Rangers will be without their main sparkplug as everyday leadoff hitter and second baseman Ian Kinsler was recently placed on the DL with what is being called a sports hernia. Kinsler may be on the shelf for the rest of the season if he opts for surgery, which is the normal course of action for this type of injury. The Rangers won't want to take any chances with their 26-year-old All-Star, so don't look for Kinsler back any time soon. His continued loss should be felt on the scoreboard as his replacement Ramon Vazquez is a light hitter with only 6 homers in 266 at bats and more importantly, no steals.

Without Kinsler, there is virtually nobody in this lineup who is a threat on the basepaths. Even with Monday's 8-7 run-fest, the Under is still 7-3-2 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams. Take the Under.

    Free Pick: Tigers-Rangers Under 11 (-115)

Play Tampa Bay Rays -115 to storm past Angels

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 07:10 PM -
    By: Nelly's Sportsline | playbook.com

Despite the approaching storm, officials expect to get the Angels, Rays game in tonight at The Trop in St. Pete. Cash your ticket on the Rays when they host the Halos.

Even though the Angels own the best road record in baseball by a wide margin, the Rays are too tough at home, winning 41 of the last 51 home games.

James Shields has great numbers on the season as the Rays have won nine of his last 11 starts and he has allowed more than three earned runs in just two of those outings. Shields is 7-1 at home this season with a 2.21 ERA and the Rays have lost just one home game out of 13 home starts for Shields this season.

Ervin Santana has very solid numbers for the Angels but he has allowed four or more runs in five of his last nine starts. The Angels have actually lost three of his last five starts and the Rays have won five of the past six meetings at Tropicana Field.

The Los Angeles bullpen has shown considerable vulnerability in the last week as well. Look for the Rays to make a statement with a big win Tuesday night.

    Free Pick: Rays -115

Blue Jays -135 vs. New York Yankees

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 07:05 PM -
    By: Ross Benjamin | phoenixsports.com

It's tempting to back the Yankees when they're underdogs, but don't do it tonight. With New York slipping out of contention, side with the Toronto Blue Jays at home on Tuesday.

Don’t get sucked into taking the New York Yankees in a tempting underdog position. Toronto starter A.J. Burnett is 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA versus the Yankees since the start of the 2007 season. Burnett is 7-0 in his last seven team starts at home.

Yankees starter Darrell Rasner enters the game in terrible form off of his last four starts posting a 6.60 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. Rasner is 1-6 with his last seven team starts on the road.

Toronto enters this series having won five of the last six overall and trail the Yankees by just two games in the AL East. The Yankees are a dismal 15-26 in the opening game of a series this season. Play on Toronto for Tuesday night.

    Free Pick: Blue Jays -135

LA Angels and Santana, TB Rays and Shields Under 8

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 07:10 PM -
By: LT Profits Sports Group | who2beton.com

The home/away splits for James Shields and Ervin Santana suggest that runs should be at a premium tonight, and with two solid bullpens, go Under in Tampa.

Ervin Santana of the Los Angeles Angels has been great on the road this year while James Shields of the Tampa Bay Rays has been almost unhittable at home, so do not expect much scoring here tonight.

Santana had been much better at home than on the road throughout his career, but he has overcome that road hump this season. He is 9-2 away from home this year with a nice 3.45 ERA, and the Under is 8-4 in his road starts. The last time he pitched outside of Anaheim, he tossed eight scoreless innings while allowing just five hits in a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees.

Meanwhile, Shields is 7-1 at home with an excellent 2.21 ERA and a microscopic 0.93 WHIP in 93.1 home innings. He has faced the Angels at home four times in the last two years, and he allowed a grand total of four runs in 28.1 innings, including a Complete Game one-hit shutout earlier this season.

As if that is not enough, the Tampa Bay bullpen now ranks third in the major leagues with a 3.18 ERA while the Angels have climbed up to number 12 after a terrible start with a 3.90 pen ERA. Finally, these are two of the most Under-friendly teams in baseball, with the Under going 71-51-2 in all Rays games and 66-50-7 in all Halos contests.

Free Pick: Angels, Rays Under 8 (-105)

Yankees +115 at Toronto Blue Jays

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 07:05 PM -
    By: Tom Stryker | 10starpicks.com

There's a sense of urgency for the Yankees to get cranking as they sit 5½ games out in the AL Wild Card hunt. New York as small road pups is the right play in Toronto on Tuesday.

Currently resting 5½ games back in the American League Wild Card standings behind Minnesota and Boston, New York knows it must start playing with a sense of urgency. The Blue Jays are 7½ games back in the Wild Card Standings and a series loss would be costly for the Yankees.

To get things started on the right foot, the Pinstripes will turn to No. 27 Darrell Rasner. In his last two starts on the road against the Twins and Angels, Rasner pitched well. In 9.1 innings of work, Darrell was touched for five earned runs and nine hits. Unfortunately, New York dropped both battles.

Toronto will send flamethrower A.J. Burnett to the bump. Respect is certainly given to Burnett's 9-3 overall home record. However, A.J. has been hit hard at Rogers Centre. With 51.0 innings completed north of the border, No. 34 was cracked for 42 earned runs and 80 hits. That adds up to a lofty 5.13 ERA. Burnett's last three starts haven't been that great either. Matched up against Detroit, Oakland and Texas, A.J. was tagged for 12 earned runs and 21 hits in just 17.2 frames. That breaks down to an elevated 6.11 ERA!

Yes, the Blue Jays are a spotless 7-0 in Burnett's last seven home starts. However, the Yankees bats came to life in Sunday's 15-6 victory over Kansas City and they'll keep that offensive momentum going tonight. Take New York with listed pitcher Rasner.

    Free Pick: Yankees +115

Galarraga, Detroit Tigers -116 cash at Texas Rangers

    Game Time: 08/19/2008 08:05 PM -
    By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

Detroit's Armando Galarraga has been solid on the road this year, and the wins should continue on Tuesday when the rookie and his Tigers take on the Texas Rangers.

The Tigers and Rangers go at it Tuesday night when Armando Galarraga matches serves with Vicente Padilla in Arlington.

Galarraga has been a pleasant surprise for the Men from Motown, especially on the road where he is 8-4 with a 2.48 ERA. In fact, in his last four road starts Galarraga has issued only three walks against 20 strikeouts.

With Padilla owning a 5.72 ERA under the lights at night this season, look for the Tigers to tame the Rangers for the sixth time in a row in this series here this evening. We recommend a one-unit play on Detroit with Galarraga vs. Padilla.

    Free Pick: Tigers -116
